:01:10. > :01:13.First tonight, detectives htnting the killer of the Norfolk student

:01:14. > :01:21.Hannah Witheridge in Thailand say they're close to making an `rrest.

:01:22. > :01:23.But her university friends have told Look East they have little

:01:24. > :01:30.This week, Hannah would have been starting

:01:31. > :01:33.the second year of a master's degree at the University of Essex.

:01:34. > :01:36.Her friends say her death nhne days ago will spur them on this xear

:01:37. > :01:38.In a moment, the latest on the investigation

:01:39. > :01:40.from the BBC's correspondent in Thailand Jonathan Head.

:01:41. > :01:45.But first this report from Debbie Tubby.

:01:46. > :01:47.Matt D'Arby, his girlfriend Lucy Dunkly, and Abigail Rae werd good

:01:48. > :01:51.Matt and Lucy shared a house with her in Colchester.

:01:52. > :01:54.They found it hard to come to terms with her death.

:01:55. > :02:04.I think hopefully her familx can find peace and all her many friends.

:02:05. > :02:15.Hannah Witheridge and David Miller from Jersey were murdered

:02:16. > :02:20.Thai police are said to be expanding their DNA testing to

:02:21. > :02:30.And whether that comes tomorrow or in a week's time,

:02:31. > :02:34.These photos were taken in Thailand just before her death.

:02:35. > :02:38.She was enjoying a three`wedk holiday with three other

:02:39. > :02:43.Would get updates on SnapCh`t, where she was staying and stuff lhke that.

:02:44. > :02:47.And that she was having a good time out there.

:02:48. > :02:50.Like, this is my view over breakfast this morning.

:02:51. > :02:53.Like, hope you're having fun in Colchester!

:02:54. > :02:56.She was due back at Essex University this week.

:02:57. > :02:59.Everyone felt the loss and just going in, it was

:03:00. > :03:05.And just saying how they couldn't believe it.

:03:06. > :03:07.Hannah Witheridge had met David Miller while on holid`y.

:03:08. > :03:09.They were caught on CCTV holding hands just

:03:10. > :03:15.It's believed he may have tried to stop the attack.

:03:16. > :03:19.I'm really grateful, if that is the case that he was trying to help her.

:03:20. > :03:23.The girls that were out there said that he was just lovelx.

:03:24. > :03:24.Obviously, really smitten with Hannah,

:03:25. > :03:31.I think this will really sptr us on to get through the year to do the

:03:32. > :03:37.And be there for her family as well in whatever way we can.

:03:38. > :03:39.All the students from Hannah's masters degree are hoping

:03:40. > :03:49.The police investigation in Thailand has moved from the island of Koh Tao

:03:50. > :03:55.The police are looking for a man who left the area shortly

:03:56. > :03:58.They say they are close to laking an arrest.

:03:59. > :04:02.BBC Correspondent Jonathan Head sent this report.

:04:03. > :04:06.They will make an arrest soon although thex're not

:04:07. > :04:12.But it does seem to be conndcted to how soon they get DNA tests done.

:04:13. > :04:15.There is one very powerful family who own a bar at which David

:04:16. > :04:18.and Hannah were seen in the hours before they were killed,

:04:19. > :04:21.and where they are reported to have got involved in an argument.

:04:22. > :04:23.A lot of people on the island talk about th`t bar

:04:24. > :04:28.Members of that family were questioned

:04:29. > :04:34.The owner of the AC Bar, whdre the victims were, and his brothdr, who

:04:35. > :04:37.was identified by police as a man in some closed circuit television

:04:38. > :04:43.footage running, late at night, around the time of the murddrs

:04:44. > :04:49.The man they are hunting in Bangkok, he is believed to be the son

:04:50. > :04:52.of the bar owner who was qudstioned yesterday.

:04:53. > :04:55.Some people say he might be an assistant,

:04:56. > :04:59.He vanished within hours of the bodies being discovered and the

:05:00. > :05:02.police say they have a manhtnt on to track him down here in the capital.

:05:03. > :05:05.Of course, once they find hhm, they will need to question him.

:05:06. > :05:07.And take DNA samples from hhm as well.

:05:08. > :05:10.And that is the point at whhch they clearly believe this is a ldad.

:05:11. > :05:14.But until they've got him and they've taken most DNA samples,

:05:15. > :05:18.and analyse the DNA samples they took from the other two members of

:05:19. > :05:21.the family, they cannot poshtively identify them yet as being connected

:05:22. > :05:24.to the murder, but there ard, I should say, optimistic sotnds

:05:25. > :05:31.The police in Essex are under investig`tion

:05:32. > :05:34.again for the way they've h`ndled a case of domestic abuse.

:05:35. > :05:36.The Independent Police Complaints Commission is looking

:05:37. > :05:39.at why the force took a month to arrest a man who was

:05:40. > :05:46.Essex Police were heavily criticised following four domestic murders that

:05:47. > :05:54.But in June last year, the force was praised for making improvemdnts

:05:55. > :05:58.80 emergency calls are made to Essex Police every day reporting

:05:59. > :06:05.And the force currently has a list of 130 perpetrators in the county,

:06:06. > :06:21.How Essex Police response to domestic violence under the

:06:22. > :06:22.spotlight again today. It h`s emerged the Independent Polhce

:06:23. > :06:28.Complaints Commission is looking into a complaint from a wom`n in

:06:29. > :06:31.Southend. Despite a court restraining order banning contact, a

:06:32. > :06:36.man had messaged her on sochal media and visited her house. But he was

:06:37. > :06:41.all `` only arrested one month later when he breached the order `gain.

:06:42. > :06:47.The investigation began last month. It is looking into any delax for

:06:48. > :06:50.arresting the man. That is `lso looking into whether a risk

:06:51. > :06:55.assessment was carried out. Although it remains to be seen whethdr the

:06:56. > :06:59.latest report finds failings, the IPCC has criticised Essex Police in

:07:00. > :07:08.the past. It has said the force ignored warnings that these three

:07:09. > :07:12.women were in danger. All three and Christine chamber 's Mac datghter

:07:13. > :07:17.were murdered. Improving thd force's response to domestic

:07:18. > :07:19.violence is a personal priority of the Chief Constable. The cotnty s

:07:20. > :07:29.Police and Crime Commissiondr says it is getting better. The police are

:07:30. > :07:33.making extensive use of the protection notices which kedp the

:07:34. > :07:39.ball safe. They are at the cutting edge of new approaches but we are on

:07:40. > :07:43.a journey. There won't be a change overnight. It is likely to be

:07:44. > :07:47.several months before the l`test reporters published.

:07:48. > :07:50.The Suffolk brewer Greene Khng has had a bid to take over one

:07:51. > :07:53.It's part of a huge expansion programme in recent years.

:07:54. > :07:58.They have bid ?660 million pounds for the pub chain Sphrit

:07:59. > :08:11.They now have until next month to make an improved offer.

:08:12. > :08:20.3500 people work for Greene King. That is dwarfed by the comp`ny's

:08:21. > :08:24.23,000 employees nationwide. The Greene King of 20 years ago is

:08:25. > :08:29.virtually unrecognisable. The company operates nearly 2000 pubs

:08:30. > :08:39.and restaurants. It operates the hungry horse chain and at the top

:08:40. > :08:49.end of the market, Loch Fynd, and its appetite shows no signs of

:08:50. > :08:53.waning. And now the Spirit company. This investment specialist says that

:08:54. > :08:58.Greene King's expansion has been driven by food. A lot of people

:08:59. > :09:02.might be surprised about thd brands of Spirit but from a financhal sense

:09:03. > :09:07.there is lots of synergies that can be made between the two. Sphrit has

:09:08. > :09:11.an excellent footprint, the locations of its pubs around the

:09:12. > :09:16.country are the sorts of thhngs that Greene King wants to expand into.

:09:17. > :09:20.Since 2005, Greene King's acquisitions have come thick and

:09:21. > :09:25.fast. Barely a year has gond by without a takeover to add to its

:09:26. > :09:30.growing portfolio. With growth come tensions. Recently Greene Khng was

:09:31. > :09:33.resized or trying to rebrand local brand signs a plus in which it has

:09:34. > :09:42.reviewed. It is no longer a regional brewer. But that doesn't matter to

:09:43. > :09:48.this pub owner. We believe passionately in local product. These

:09:49. > :09:52.are truly regarded as local. And the service we obtain from the local

:09:53. > :09:57.suppliers, including Greene King, is second to none. Greene King's first

:09:58. > :10:03.off of ?660 million was fred but by Spirit. A second improved offer is

:10:04. > :10:05.widely expected. It has unthl mid`October to make a final offer or

:10:06. > :10:07.walk away. The ferry route linking Essdx with

:10:08. > :10:10.Denmark will end this weekend DFDS Seaways says it's scrapping the

:10:11. > :10:16.service between Harwich and Esbjerg Let's go live to Harwich now,

:10:17. > :10:44.and our business corresponddnt This very low and well`to`do people

:10:45. > :10:52.to explore the continent in more Joel `` genteel times. It is now no

:10:53. > :10:58.longer competitive. Take a closer look. This is the last passdnger

:10:59. > :11:06.ferry service to Scandinavi`. The route has been in operation since

:11:07. > :11:10.1875 but on Sunday the final sailing will be made. Over the years

:11:11. > :11:13.passenger numbers have falldn and thief for `` Ferry has found it

:11:14. > :11:18.difficult to compete with btdget airlines. Many passengers are happy

:11:19. > :11:22.to fly but many others, those with cars, for example, are not.

:11:23. > :11:23.People like Roger Moran of Southwold.

:11:24. > :11:26.His wife, Hela, is Danish, and the couple are regular tsers

:11:27. > :11:30.It is going to be very inconvenient for caravanners and motorholes to go

:11:31. > :11:34.to Denmark, and it will cause them a longer trip, involving

:11:35. > :11:43.a couple of days via Calais and Dover, and that will be bad news.

:11:44. > :11:47.DFDS said that under new EU rules, ferry operators will have to use

:11:48. > :11:53.That would cost ?2 million to implement on the Harwich service

:11:54. > :11:58.The service has been under pressure for a while.

:11:59. > :12:02.We have seen the end of duty`free shopping some xears

:12:03. > :12:06.ago, freight and passenger traffic has been reducing over the course

:12:07. > :12:09.of time, and with cost rises coming in next year, we believe th`t it

:12:10. > :12:16.DFDS dropped a ferry servicd to Cuxhaven in Germany in 2005.

:12:17. > :12:19.The end of the Esbjerg routd will leave Harwich with just one ferry

:12:20. > :12:23.operator, Stenna Line, which goes to the Hook of Holland.

:12:24. > :12:25.Its passenger numbers have hncreased since the introduction

:12:26. > :12:30.In future, the Morans face a much longer journey to get to

:12:31. > :12:35.Denmark through Dover involving a marathon drive on the continent.

:12:36. > :12:38.They predict the end of the Harwich service will cut the number

:12:39. > :12:47.of Scandinavian tourists who visit the East.

:12:48. > :12:49.Detectives investigating thd murder of James Attfield in Colchester have

:12:50. > :12:52.The 19`year`old is being questioned on suspicion of lurder.

:12:53. > :12:55.James Attfield was found with more than 100 knife wounds near

:12:56. > :13:12.So far, ten people have been arrestdd.

:13:13. > :13:14.Still to come tonight, the pressure's rising as thd UK s

:13:15. > :13:16.biggest collection of barometers goes up for s`le.

:13:17. > :13:19.And the autumn season gets under way at Newmarket.

:13:20. > :13:20.We're looking ahead to the Cambridgeshire Meeting

:13:21. > :13:33.and some of the best young horses in the country.

:13:34. > :13:36.330,000 people in the UK ard diagnosed with cancer every year.

:13:37. > :13:38.Put another way, one person every two minutes.

:13:39. > :13:41.It's a disease that touches most of our lives.

:13:42. > :13:47.Scientists in this region are at the forefront of cancer research,

:13:48. > :14:10.don't need painful biopsies, or expensive scans.

:14:11. > :14:13.Part of me thought why is this happening to me?

:14:14. > :14:17.I'm 33 years old, I've got a one`year`old child.

:14:18. > :14:20.Things like that don't happen to people like me.

:14:21. > :14:26.But you deal with it and although it is horrific, you just get on with it

:14:27. > :14:29.because that's what you havd to do, especially when you've got children.

:14:30. > :14:35.During treatment, Victoria was subjected to bhopsies,

:14:36. > :14:41.CT scans, MRIs, all means to see the disease's progress.

:14:42. > :14:44.But now a Cambridge life schence start`up

:14:45. > :16:41.Through a simple test showing tiny fragments of the cancerous tumour.

:16:42. > :16:45.The trainer John Gosden has entered 16 horses, and is qtietly

:16:46. > :16:53.Our Sports Editor Jonathan Park has been out with him on the gallops.

:16:54. > :16:56.It's the time of year when Newmarket looks to the future, searchhng

:16:57. > :17:01.for new champions to graduate from the gallops to the racdcourse.

:17:02. > :17:04.Winning on the Rowley Mile hs a distant dream for some

:17:05. > :17:07.but in John Gosden's ring, many make the grade.

:17:08. > :17:10.We have had some luck down the years, as you know.

:17:11. > :17:13.You've got to have the right horses, but we've got a couple

:17:14. > :17:15.in Cambridgeshire, and I thhnk Cornrow is doing particularly well.

:17:16. > :17:19.Newmarket's former champion trainer is enjoying another fine se`son

:17:20. > :17:22.He could become the Cambridgeshire meeting's most successful ever

:17:23. > :17:25.trainer if he saddles another two whnners.

:17:26. > :17:29.Something he did seven times with racing's latest star Kingman

:17:30. > :17:32.but a throat infection has finished his season and career.

:17:33. > :17:35.Instead, he is retiring to the same stud as Henry Cecil's

:17:36. > :17:41.I think it would have been ` great race over a mile between thdm.

:17:42. > :17:44.At six we would have had the advantage, and at the mhle, he

:17:45. > :17:49.But over a mile, it would h`ve been a fascinating affair.

:17:50. > :17:52.I can't talk to Henry, I usdd to stand here and watch Frankel with

:17:53. > :17:55.him, but I'll have to check with him one day what he thinks.

:17:56. > :17:57.Racing needs the big stars like Frankel or Kingman

:17:58. > :18:02.Those kinds of horses are stand out from the crowd.

:18:03. > :18:05.The search is on now to find one of the new stars of the futtre.

:18:06. > :18:07.We might just see one make a breakthrough

:18:08. > :18:12.We are coming to that period of the year where the next tranche

:18:13. > :18:15.of high`class horses are showing their worth, going into winter for

:18:16. > :18:18.Then, of course, we've got the fantastic

:18:19. > :18:22.Cambridge Handicap, a race that has been run for over 150 years.

:18:23. > :18:26.We've got some very high`cl`ss two`year`old races coming up,

:18:27. > :18:27.looking to be the stars of the future.

:18:28. > :18:30.There are 23 races over the next three days.

:18:31. > :18:32.The highlight, Saturday's Cambridgeshire H`ndicap,

:18:33. > :18:37.which dates back to 1839, featuring over 30 horses.

:18:38. > :18:40.20,000 racegoers are expectdd and John Gosden hopes to be in the

:18:41. > :18:51.winner's enclosure as he bids to become the King of Cambridgdshire.

:18:52. > :18:54.In the football last night, MK Dons won, and are through to

:18:55. > :18:56.the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time.

:18:57. > :19:09.They lost 1`0 to Shrewsbury from League Two.

:19:10. > :19:16.MK Dons made headlines with their heroics over man `` Manchester City.

:19:17. > :19:20.Against Bradford, they showdd it was no fluke. Two goals from thd top

:19:21. > :19:24.drawer from one of the Football League 's finest finishes. He is on

:19:25. > :19:28.loan from Arsenal and he gave the lead after five minutes with this

:19:29. > :19:32.brilliant turn and shot. And then finished a one`on`one in thd dying

:19:33. > :19:37.minutes after this speech pdrfect pass. The mess than two months, he's

:19:38. > :19:42.scored nine goals and the MK Dons are reaping the rewards. We know

:19:43. > :19:47.what he can do. He has added goals to the pace. He has eight or nine

:19:48. > :19:52.now. So it is a fantastic achievement. He has five in this

:19:53. > :19:56.competition so he is enjoying it. Norwich's defeat by Shrewsbtry was

:19:57. > :20:00.one of the shocks of the rotnds so far. Neal Adams had made 11 changes

:20:01. > :20:06.but the Canaries failed to finish in front of goal. Then a second`half

:20:07. > :20:09.header proved decisive. Every week on Look East,

:20:10. > :20:12.we give you a barometer reading Barometers of course measurd

:20:13. > :20:18.atmospheric pressure and, before weather apps on smartphones,

:20:19. > :20:23.they were very popular. The largest private collecthon

:20:24. > :20:28.of barometers in the UK It's owned by a man from Norfolk,

:20:29. > :20:45.and Mike Liggins has been Patrick is one of the world's

:20:46. > :20:49.leading experts on barometers. He lives in a perfectly ordinary house

:20:50. > :20:51.on a nice estate in Norfolk but behind the net curtains is something

:20:52. > :21:09.quite extraordinary. 100 barometers of all shapes and

:21:10. > :21:12.sizes. They originally belonged to his father a barometer maker and

:21:13. > :21:18.restorer for most of his life until he died last year. The things that

:21:19. > :21:23.went through his workshop, he would put them to one side and he would

:21:24. > :21:28.think, I'll repair this latdr on, or it is a good example of somdthing I

:21:29. > :21:32.haven't seen many of. And so he would put it to one side. Jtst to

:21:33. > :21:37.give you an idea of the extdnt of the collection, the barometdrs go

:21:38. > :21:42.all the way up the stairs, `nd then onto the landing. Most of them are

:21:43. > :21:46.domestic but, of course, ovdr the years, barometers have been used in

:21:47. > :21:52.all walks of life. Barometers were used on ships, down the pits to read

:21:53. > :21:58.pressure and minds, and as ` marketing tool. I like the look of

:21:59. > :22:04.this one. Tell me about it. This one is made by an maker who werd the

:22:05. > :22:07.Rolls`Royce of the instrument making world of that time in the mhd`1 th

:22:08. > :22:18.century. With smartphones, whether apps and

:22:19. > :22:24.computer predictions, do we really need barometers these days? If you

:22:25. > :22:30.have a barometer in your hole, when you go past it twice a day, morning

:22:31. > :22:34.and evening, and you tap it, and you look at the reading, and thdre is

:22:35. > :22:40.something just a little bit more special about that, you know? What

:22:41. > :22:44.are they worth? Some of thel might fetch ?2000. The collection as a

:22:45. > :22:51.whole might even reach six figures. We will know more when the

:22:52. > :22:57.collection goes on sale in this on October the 3rd.

:22:58. > :22:58.We always do the barometer reading on Thursday unless somebody forgets.

:22:59. > :23:08.But today being Wednesday... It's not because I forget it,

:23:09. > :23:13.sometimes we run out of timd. There's quite a lot of weather to

:23:14. > :23:21.talk about. But a special treat for you tonight. This is our re`ding.

:23:22. > :23:25.The weather forecast this wdek is actually fairly settled, having said
