:01:05. > :01:10.Good evening. The Northamptonshire woman has been killed in a vintage

:01:10. > :01:13.car rally in Siberia. Emma Wilkinson was taking part in the Peking to

:01:13. > :01:18.Paris race described as the longest and toughest challenge anyone can

:01:18. > :01:23.drive in a classic car. She had been taking turns to drive with her

:01:23. > :01:26.partner Peter Davies. It was the first time she had taken part in the

:01:26. > :01:32.rally and she had previously told reporters she was doing it for the

:01:32. > :01:42.fun of it. She was a fun loving mother with a surge of adventure and

:01:42. > :01:54.

:01:54. > :01:56.it was during one of those advances that Emma Wilkinson lost her life.

:01:56. > :01:59.Three weeks into the Germans rally she was killed in a head-on

:01:59. > :02:01.collision on a Siberian highway. Just a day earlier she spoke to

:02:01. > :02:03.reporters about her progress. wanted to compete and beat them but

:02:03. > :02:06.sadly they are beating me. Emma Wilkinson lived in Brigg stock near

:02:06. > :02:08.Kettering. She was joined on the rally by her partner. News of her

:02:08. > :02:13.death has saddened the community. Emma and her partner Peter Davies

:02:13. > :02:19.left the village last month for the race. Rally director Philip Young

:02:19. > :02:24.described as a fun, by the unpopular. He went to # want to say

:02:24. > :02:30.that both she and Peter proved themselves to be capable, competent

:02:30. > :02:34.and resourceful. She was great fun to have around. A very attractive,

:02:34. > :02:40.the vicious driver who enjoyed driving, enjoyed the company of

:02:40. > :02:46.others and we all miss her very much. MR's partner was not seriously

:02:46. > :02:51.hurt in the crash. Russian police are now investigating reports the

:02:51. > :02:54.driver of the other car fell asleep at the wheel. The foreign office

:02:54. > :02:58.says they are helping the family through this difficult time while

:02:58. > :03:06.friends and neighbours struggle to come to terms with such devastating

:03:06. > :03:09.news. A woman from Harlow who was attacked

:03:10. > :03:14.in her sleep and left locked in a room by her violent partner has

:03:14. > :03:17.spoken today about her abuse. It comes on the day a report has called

:03:17. > :03:27.for a review into the way Essex Police deals with the most high risk

:03:27. > :03:28.

:03:28. > :03:32.victims of domestic violence. Maria, Jeanette, Christine - all

:03:32. > :03:38.murdered by their ex-partners after police failings. The links to

:03:38. > :03:42.identify the risk they faced, feelings to manage those risks.

:03:42. > :03:49.police are the last line of defence and they seem to be failing us

:03:49. > :03:52.nationally, so that is why working with the refuge is so important. It

:03:52. > :03:59.is about time we protected vulnerable women and children and

:03:59. > :04:03.even men. The report says the way offices deal with domestic violence

:04:03. > :04:08.is of significant concern. Although the initial response that the police

:04:08. > :04:13.make to a call from a victim is the right response, what then happens is

:04:13. > :04:18.there with lots of people that get involved in providing care and

:04:18. > :04:25.protection for the victim and those people do not talk to one another.

:04:25. > :04:30.One Vic Tim says the way she was treated by officers was diabolical.

:04:30. > :04:36.After years of rapes, beatings and abuse, she called police but did not

:04:36. > :04:42.told them she had been hit in the face and they did not ask about her

:04:42. > :04:47.injuries. They told him I had been ringing the helpline and the things

:04:47. > :04:53.I was saying they don't fault to him. He looked to me in a room for

:04:53. > :05:00.two days the next day. He played music over and over again. He was

:05:00. > :05:04.screaming in my face. There was a bucket in the room to go to toilet.

:05:04. > :05:12.The report says Essex Police have taken important steps to improve

:05:12. > :05:19.their work but much more needs to be done. 12 recommendations are for

:05:19. > :05:24.Essex Police to do. The others are what they can do in partnership with

:05:25. > :05:34.other agencies. You are saying other agencies also have to answer for

:05:35. > :05:35.

:05:35. > :05:38.this. All agencies have to answer. Stephen Kaplan acknowledges the need

:05:38. > :05:45.for improvements. He stresses officers will listen to victims and

:05:45. > :05:50.help them. A couple from Beds accused of making

:05:50. > :05:53.fake devices to detect explosives were back in court as lawyers make

:05:53. > :05:58.their last arguments in their defence. Samuel and Joan Tree are

:05:58. > :06:03.charged with making them in order to commit a fraud.

:06:03. > :06:08.The prosecution says they are con artists who knew that offer six

:06:08. > :06:13.device was a useless sham. The defence says they are honest but

:06:13. > :06:17.misguided people who genuinely believed the handset worked. Samuel

:06:17. > :06:21.and Joan Tree manufactured the devices here at their home. They

:06:21. > :06:26.were sold to overseas authorities for thousands. The couple have

:06:26. > :06:32.maintained the equipment could detect minute drugs and explosives.

:06:32. > :06:36.But when the device was dismantled, it contained no functioning parts

:06:36. > :06:41.and later tests proved he did not work. Today the jury at the Old

:06:41. > :06:48.Bailey was told one of the handsets had been given to a policeman to

:06:48. > :06:58.test. Graham Brodie QC said this was something a con artist would not do.

:06:58. > :07:05.

:07:05. > :07:09.Giving a device to a police officer Joan Tree. He described her as a

:07:09. > :07:15.homely grandmother. He said the fences or fraud are committed out of

:07:15. > :07:21.greed but this does not tally with the defendant. Her life is not one

:07:21. > :07:26.of riches and excess. The cop or along with a third defendant accused

:07:26. > :07:34.of fraud. Tomorrow the judge will begin summing up then the jury will

:07:34. > :07:37.retire to consider its verdict. A mother from Northamptonshire is

:07:37. > :07:42.planning to take legal action against a hospital after the death

:07:42. > :07:46.of her daughter. Bricklin Harold died soon after being discharged

:07:46. > :07:51.from Northampton and. Leanne Harrold says the hospital failed her child

:07:51. > :07:54.and had called her a paranoid mother. Leanne Harrold and her

:07:54. > :08:01.daughter Tia are having to adjust to life without Brooklyn.

:08:01. > :08:05.She died just a month ago. Bricklin was a fighter. After being born with

:08:05. > :08:11.a serious heart problems she spent most of her life in and out of

:08:11. > :08:15.hospital. In May her mother took her to Northampton General. The hospital

:08:15. > :08:22.wrongly suspected Brooklyn of having gastroenteritis but her mother was

:08:22. > :08:28.not convinced. I said blood tests need doing because she has to have

:08:28. > :08:34.them every time she is admitted because she is prone to infections.

:08:34. > :08:38.But those tests were not done. Despite having a high temperature

:08:38. > :08:42.and no improvement she was discharged. The next morning it

:08:42. > :08:48.became clear she was getting worse and I was later she died of

:08:48. > :08:52.septicaemia. Now the family say they want answers. Whether they kept her

:08:52. > :08:59.in a few days or what, they could have done the care they needed to do

:08:59. > :09:09.for her. She might still have had that little bit of a life chance

:09:09. > :09:14.

:09:14. > :09:19.that she would have pulled through. Northampton General Hospital say

:09:19. > :09:23.they offered their sincere condolences to the family. A full

:09:23. > :09:29.investigation into the circumstances is now underway and when results are

:09:29. > :09:33.known they will discuss those with the family.

:09:33. > :09:37.Detectives investigating the death of a woman whose car tyres had been

:09:37. > :09:42.slashed say they have had seven or eight calls about the incident. The

:09:42. > :09:48.death of Joanna Smith featured on the BBC's Crimewatch Roadshow. The

:09:48. > :09:51.newlywed was on her way to work when she was involved in a fatal crash.

:09:52. > :09:58.It was later discovered that her tyre had been vandalised overnight

:09:58. > :10:02.along with several other cars parked nearby. It is an added punishment

:10:02. > :10:12.and pain because we have to go through life that somebody cause

:10:12. > :10:22.Joanna's death and have not been caught. Someone has -- has to have

:10:22. > :10:23.

:10:23. > :10:26.the courage to come forward. It has robbed me of my wife.

:10:26. > :10:30.The new managing director of first Capital Connect has announced plans

:10:30. > :10:34.for a better rail service. David Statham says the company will

:10:34. > :10:38.deliver cleaner trains, better passenger information and a more

:10:39. > :10:43.reliable timetable. He will also look to help network rail to improve

:10:43. > :10:48.power supplies and signalling. Hundreds of thousands of

:10:48. > :10:54.caterpillars have turned an avenue of cherry trees a ghostly white.

:10:54. > :11:00.Fine webs have been spun around the trees by ermine moth caterpillars.
