:00:26. > :00:31.A call for more money for A&E at Kettering.

:00:31. > :00:36.Safety talks after the drowning of two men at Bawsey Pits Nick King 's

:00:36. > :00:44.Lynn. Not meeting the challenge, Northants's police force is

:00:44. > :00:54.criticised. And keeping it local, how this is being used to help local

:00:54. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :00:57.communities. Good evening. The campaign to get

:00:57. > :01:00.more funding for Kettering General Hospital was taken to Westminster

:01:00. > :01:06.today. The MPs for Corby Kettering and Wellingborough met with the

:01:06. > :01:12.Health Minister Dan Poulter today. The hospital has never been far from

:01:12. > :01:15.the headlines in the last 12 months. It became something of a political

:01:15. > :01:18.football during last year's Corby by election when the soon-to-be MP Andy

:01:18. > :01:21.Sawford suggested that a hospital review could mean downgrading key

:01:21. > :01:24.services. In October Kettering hospital had been heavily criticised

:01:24. > :01:31.by the Health Watchdog, Monitor which raised concerns about its

:01:31. > :01:38.management and finances. But of most concern was the hospital's continued

:01:38. > :01:41.failure to meet Accident and Emergency waiting times. Signs like

:01:41. > :01:45.this have become all-too-familiar at Kettering General Hospital, as it is

:01:45. > :01:49.a neat apartment struggles to keep up with demand. The growth in the

:01:49. > :01:52.town has outstripped the facility here, particularly in any

:01:52. > :01:57.department. We have seen 100% increase in attendances here just in

:01:57. > :02:07.the last 20 years. It was built for a population that would come to

:02:07. > :02:10.hospital, maybe 40,000 people we are now seeing in excess of 80,000

:02:10. > :02:13.people. Since the report, the hospital has been looking at how to

:02:13. > :02:16.relieve Russia on a knee. One of those ideas is the launch of the new

:02:16. > :02:21.ambulatory care centre. If you have a chronic condition, your GP can

:02:21. > :02:29.refer you here instead of sending you to a knee. We have seen a

:02:29. > :02:35.gradual increase in the number of patients. In the first four weeks,

:02:35. > :02:39.we saw around 168 patients. That would have otherwise gone by A&E.

:02:39. > :02:43.One of the other problems is patients get stuck in a knee is that

:02:43. > :02:53.aren't always any available about that spreads. But last month, this

:02:53. > :02:56.

:02:56. > :03:05.new paediatric unit opened. benefits are twofold. Whilst

:03:05. > :03:10.normally, a child would go to a knee and be treated there, what we can

:03:10. > :03:17.now do is stream live -- green line those patients. -- child would go to

:03:17. > :03:22.A&E. The hospital says it's turnaround programme is starting to

:03:22. > :03:26.work. Since October, the department has missed its waiting time targets,

:03:26. > :03:27.but in the last few weeks of July, those targets have been hit. But

:03:27. > :03:32.despite these state-of-the-art facilities, the hospital says the

:03:33. > :03:36.A&E department will always be simply too small, which is why local MPs

:03:36. > :03:41.met the health minister to lobby for more investment, and the meeting

:03:41. > :03:44.appeared to go well. We will come back together with hospital and

:03:44. > :03:48.commissioning groups in two months time. Will be going back to the

:03:48. > :03:53.Department of Health to put together a strong business case supported by

:03:53. > :03:58.the doctors, GPs, MPs, to say, let's get some funding because it really

:03:58. > :04:02.needs it. And with cross-party support, there is growing optimism

:04:02. > :04:12.at Kettering will eventually get the A&E department that the town so

:04:12. > :04:12.

:04:13. > :04:15.obviously needs. An independent inquiry is to be held into the

:04:15. > :04:18.decision to suspend key Children's Services at Bedford Hospital.

:04:18. > :04:21.Anxious parents were among those who attended an emergency public meeting

:04:21. > :04:28.today. Hospital managers say they are working hard to restore services

:04:28. > :04:31.but admitted it could be a difficult process. They came in their dozens

:04:32. > :04:37.in search of answers. Concerned parents unsure of how the crisis in

:04:37. > :04:42.Children's Services will affect them. Among them, this woman and a

:04:42. > :04:48.rose. She listened carefully, but nothing she heard offered much in

:04:48. > :04:52.the way of reassurance. I've got two children and I'm expecting my third.

:04:52. > :04:57.We are concerned about where we will go. I have used a knee in the past

:04:57. > :05:01.and now I'm not sure what I'm then to do. -- A&E. There the crisis at

:05:01. > :05:05.Bedford Hospital began when junior doctors raise concerns about patient

:05:05. > :05:07.safety. They felt children were being put at risk because of a lack

:05:07. > :05:12.of senior staff to support them. They have now been removed from the

:05:12. > :05:15.hospital, which has led to the temporary closure of some services.

:05:15. > :05:20.On Sunday, and balances will no longer take emergency patients to

:05:20. > :05:27.Bedford and from midnight on the 31st of July, the hospital's A&E

:05:27. > :05:37.department will only treat adults. The mayor called today's emergency

:05:37. > :05:40.meeting. I will not accept that this would happen. We need a full A&E in

:05:40. > :05:48.Bedford. It is wrong people have to travel 34 miles to get those

:05:48. > :05:51.services. -- 25 miles. hospital's chief executive has

:05:51. > :05:54.promised a full independent enquiry into what went wrong and said his

:05:54. > :06:00.team is committed to bringing Children's Services back to this

:06:00. > :06:05.hospital. But by his own admission, that might be easier said than done.

:06:05. > :06:09.My prime concern is the safety of the children. That has driven this

:06:09. > :06:12.and we have had to make some hard decisions. It may well reflect on

:06:12. > :06:21.whether we can retain staff that we have all weather we can recruit the

:06:21. > :06:31.best staff -- or whether we can recruit. The staff here fear

:06:31. > :06:36.

:06:37. > :06:39.children services Main net -- may never return to the hospital.

:06:39. > :06:43.men have been arrested on suspicion of supplying class A drugs,

:06:43. > :06:47.following the death of a couple at Jesus Green in Cambridge. The pair

:06:47. > :06:49.named locally as Kim Reid and Jimmy Sinclair were due to get married.

:06:49. > :06:53.They died on Tuesday despite attempts by paramedics to revive

:06:53. > :06:55.them. The men arrested were both suspected drug dealers. One has been

:06:55. > :06:58.released on police bail The Government has brought forward

:06:58. > :07:01.improvement work on a part of the A14 in Northamptonshire. A

:07:01. > :07:04.businessman accused of a quadruple murder in Northampton has appeared

:07:04. > :07:07.in court today. It's alleged Anxiang Du murdered four members of the Ding

:07:08. > :07:10.family at their home in Northampton back in April 2011.Our reporter Jo

:07:10. > :07:13.Black was in court. A university lecturer met his wife and their two

:07:13. > :07:20.daughters were all found stabbed to death in their own home in Wootton

:07:20. > :07:25.in Northampton. Detectives think they were killed on the day of the

:07:25. > :07:31.Royal wedding. Fast forward to today in the dock at Northampton Crown

:07:31. > :07:34.Court, Anxiang Du speaking through Mandarin interpreter, spoke only to

:07:34. > :07:38.confirm his name. Those of you who have in following this case will

:07:38. > :07:43.know he was extradited back to the UK from Morocco where he was

:07:43. > :07:53.discovered by detectives. There was no leave from Anxiang Du today, that

:07:53. > :07:54.

:07:54. > :07:57.will come from -- in October. owners of a former sand quarry where

:07:57. > :08:01.two people drowned have been in safety talks this afternoon. The

:08:01. > :08:06.bodies of a 41-year-old man from King Lynn and a 16-year-old boy from

:08:06. > :08:16.Ely were pulled from Bawsey Pits near King's Lynn on Tuesday.

:08:16. > :08:18.

:08:18. > :08:22.Norfolk's Fire service's dive unit is releasing these photos. You can

:08:22. > :08:27.see just the weight of it is going to cause problems. Most of the weeds

:08:28. > :08:32.had been removed before the photos were taken. He had to use a knife to

:08:32. > :08:35.cut himself free. As soon as you get into the weed, you have got no

:08:35. > :08:41.visibility and you are really restricted in movement. The

:08:41. > :08:49.entanglement is everywhere. If you are a swimmer who's panicking, it

:08:49. > :08:54.happens very rapidly, it spirals out of control. The quarry owners have

:08:54. > :08:59.closed the access gates but today people continued to swim despite two

:08:59. > :09:02.drownings at two different lakes at the same pits on the same day. It is

:09:02. > :09:05.good the 16-year-old with the same distance away from the shoreline is

:09:05. > :09:09.the swimmers were when he got into difficulty in the weeds. The signs

:09:09. > :09:14.already running swimming, the owners held a meeting with police this

:09:14. > :09:19.afternoon to see if safety could be improved. Today they spoke for the

:09:19. > :09:24.first time since the tragedy. saddened and sympathies and thoughts

:09:24. > :09:28.go out to the two families and their friends who were involved in all. We

:09:29. > :09:31.have no powers to stop people going into our water. Lots of people have

:09:31. > :09:38.lots of views that may need to start understanding and see if we can,

:09:38. > :09:44.with a better solution. This footage was filmed in Norfolk Broads. This

:09:44. > :09:48.tranquil on the surface, treacherous underneath. -- it is. Divers checks,

:09:48. > :09:53.checking that you have got your knife, and where you have what it on

:09:53. > :09:58.the body. We find in the Broads, there is a lot of fishing wire.

:10:22. > :10:32.

:10:32. > :10:42.memory of the 16-year-old and the other boy. The government has
