:00:24. > :00:29.Unlawfully killed - the VC hero who died on the front line in

:00:29. > :00:34.Afghanistan. He was the bravest of soldiers and the best of men.

:00:34. > :00:38.and the rest of today's top stories now with Janine.

:00:38. > :00:41.Back in the hands of the NHS - the Stevenage Surgicentre criticise

:00:41. > :00:46.after patients died and records were lost.

:00:46. > :00:56.Police offer a 10,000 reward to help catch this great-grandfather's

:00:56. > :01:01.

:01:01. > :01:04.killers. And the steam train halted Good evening and welcome. There were

:01:04. > :01:06.emotional scenes today at an inquest for a young soldier from

:01:06. > :01:16.Northamptonshire posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for

:01:16. > :01:16.

:01:16. > :01:21.bravery. Lance Corporal James Ashworth from Corby died in

:01:21. > :01:25.Afghanistan last June. Grenade he was about to probe detonated when it

:01:25. > :01:30.was hit by a sniper's bullet. The coroner ruled that he was unlawfully

:01:30. > :01:34.killed. Said to be destined for great things in the Army,

:01:34. > :01:38.23-year-old Lance Corporal James Ashworth died in Afghanistan trying

:01:38. > :01:43.to protect his friends. They turned out in their hundreds

:01:43. > :01:47.for his funeral in Corby and today his family, including his mother and

:01:47. > :01:52.brother, came to Kettering for answers. The evidence took them back

:01:52. > :01:57.to last June. Lance Corporal Webb was in a group flown in to try and

:01:57. > :02:03.kill or capture a group of enemy snipers. -- Lance Corporal James

:02:03. > :02:08.Ashworth. Today, the soldiers he was with were present, including a Royal

:02:08. > :02:12.Marine seen here in a suit. The court heard evidence from a soldier

:02:12. > :02:16.who spoke the language and off the sniper treatment if he surrendered.

:02:16. > :02:19.He said that from the man's response he believed him to be high on drugs

:02:19. > :02:24.and he knew that they would have to fight on. James selflessly

:02:24. > :02:29.volunteered to through the only grenade left into the doorway. To do

:02:29. > :02:36.this, he crawled on his stomach with bullets flying around him on a low

:02:36. > :02:39.wall, watched by a young soldier closest to the camera. That soldier

:02:39. > :02:45.said he had seen enemy fire nearby and shouted to James Ashworth to

:02:45. > :02:49.come back. He said he shouted but he didn't move. The coroner reported

:02:49. > :02:53.that as James was about to throw the grenade, he received a single

:02:53. > :02:56.gunshot which knocked into the ground and caused it detonate.

:02:56. > :03:04.Outside court his mother, in tears for much of the inquest, paid

:03:04. > :03:14.tribute. James Pattinson a doing a job he loved. At times it was a hard

:03:14. > :03:14.

:03:14. > :03:20.job. -- James passed away doing a job he loved. His commitment served

:03:20. > :03:25.as an example to us all. He thought of his friends, put others first and

:03:25. > :03:28.refused to give up. It was one of his family's proudest moments to

:03:28. > :03:33.collect his posthumous Victoria Cross. Lance Corporal James Ashworth

:03:33. > :03:36.will always be remembered as one of the very few to receive it.

:03:36. > :03:42.A privately run hospital which was heavily criticised following the

:03:42. > :03:45.deaths of three patients has been bought by the NHS for 53 million.

:03:45. > :03:50.The Lister Surgicentre in Stevenage was run by an arm of the building

:03:50. > :03:53.company Carillion. But has been dogged by problems from the start.

:03:53. > :03:59.In April last year, inspectors failed the Surgicentre in four out

:03:59. > :04:04.of five areas. In August 2012, GPs were told not to refer patients to

:04:05. > :04:07.the eye department there because of worrying waiting times. In February

:04:08. > :04:12.this year, the most senior medical examiner in the country criticised

:04:12. > :04:21.the hospital for the deaths of three patients after routine surgery. And

:04:21. > :04:25.in June, work began to suspend the company's licence.

:04:26. > :04:29.Today's announcement is a victory for Michael Mansi. He has been

:04:29. > :04:33.fighting tirelessly for change at the Surgicentre since his sister

:04:33. > :04:39.died aged 86. She was admit it for a routine knee operation but died of

:04:39. > :04:43.bronchial pneumonia. The facility is staffed by NHS doctors and nurses

:04:43. > :04:48.and treats NHS patients at it was run by a private company owned by

:04:48. > :04:53.the building firm Carillion. delighted because it's in the care

:04:53. > :04:59.of the right people. I think they will be having the correct amount of

:05:00. > :05:07.nursing staff and the cost will not be paramount. The NHS don't have to

:05:07. > :05:12.make a profit and I feel happy that people who are going to the new

:05:12. > :05:16.centre, whatever they call it, we'll go in and not come out in a box

:05:16. > :05:21.because of lack of care. Since it opened, the 50 million facility was

:05:21. > :05:24.dogged by criticism. Waiting list targets were not being met,

:05:24. > :05:30.patients' files were lost and three people died following routine

:05:30. > :05:34.surgery. Soon GPs were advised not to refer patients for eye operations

:05:34. > :05:40.or joint replacements and a sick procedures were cancelled. Now the

:05:40. > :05:50.centre has been taken over by the NHS for 53 million. In a statement

:05:50. > :06:07.

:06:07. > :06:11.how the transfer should proceed. The NHS says its priority is to ensure

:06:11. > :06:14.patient care is not affected by the change.

:06:14. > :06:18.The MP for Stevenage has been campaigning for the NHS to take over

:06:18. > :06:24.the hospital for 18 months. He said he's delighted by the news and

:06:24. > :06:31.insists it's worth the 53 million of taxpayers' money. Over the last

:06:31. > :06:34.18 months, we've had three patients who died, 8500 patient records lost

:06:34. > :06:38.and there have been huge problems and you have covered the story on a

:06:38. > :06:42.number of occasions. People are very unhappy with the service so we did

:06:42. > :06:47.have to step in. I'm delighted that we've managed to take control of the

:06:47. > :06:51.situation. Not every patient has been unhappy with the service at the

:06:51. > :06:58.Surgicentre. They feel you are pursuing some kind of personal

:06:58. > :07:03.vendetta against private health care. Well, I think effectively,

:07:03. > :07:07.Carillion are builders, building roads, schools and hospitals, and

:07:07. > :07:10.these people are in charge of managing the facility. The NHS staff

:07:10. > :07:14.are the people providing the information about what's been going

:07:14. > :07:18.on. We have had a whole litany of disasters and problems. I get

:07:18. > :07:23.complaints every single day so I understand that some patients have

:07:23. > :07:28.had a positive experience. I'm delighted for them but I wish every

:07:28. > :07:32.single patient could have a positive experience. NHS managers are going

:07:32. > :07:36.to take over - where you going to get them from? The local hospital

:07:36. > :07:41.trust are going to manage the facility. These type of operations

:07:41. > :07:48.are undertaken by the hospital until the facility is developed and opened

:07:48. > :07:52.so it will be people who are in charge of the facility. -- people

:07:53. > :07:59.who were in charge of the facility some years ago. They presumably have

:07:59. > :08:02.a job elsewhere so they will be taken from, Willie? Not at all. We

:08:02. > :08:06.have to say thank you to the doctors because if it wasn't for their

:08:06. > :08:09.bravery in stopping referring their patients to the facility because it

:08:09. > :08:12.wasn't safe, we wouldn't have been able to move forward with the

:08:13. > :08:17.campaign. This has nothing to do with private health versus public

:08:17. > :08:22.health. I've said a number of times you can't say public schools or

:08:22. > :08:26.private are bad. At about public safety.

:08:26. > :08:29.We asked Carillion about the takeover. They wouldn't be

:08:29. > :08:32.interviewed but in a statement confirmed the deal was going ahead

:08:33. > :08:35.but that the transfer date hadn't yet been set. The managing director

:08:35. > :08:38.said patients currently receiving treatment at the Surgicentre should

:08:38. > :08:41.continue to attend appointments in the usual way, and that a

:08:41. > :08:43.consultation process has started to explain the impact of the changes to

:08:43. > :08:46.staff. A 10,000 reward has been offered by

:08:46. > :08:50.police investigating the murder of a great grandfather from Kempston.

:08:50. > :08:52.Sharif Demirsay was stabbed to death on the doorstep of his home in May.

:08:52. > :08:55.Today his granddaughter made an emotional appeal for information

:08:55. > :09:01.which could help catch her grandfather's killers. Stuart

:09:01. > :09:06.Ratcliffe reports. Two and a half months on, my family

:09:06. > :09:11.and I are still very much affected. Not having caught the individuals

:09:11. > :09:14.responsible, it seems to be getting a lot harder. Sharif Demirsay was

:09:14. > :09:18.described today as a loving great grandad and a popular friend and

:09:18. > :09:22.neighbour. On the night of May 14, he opened his door to three men who

:09:23. > :09:27.began stabbing him before pushing him inside the house and dumping his

:09:27. > :09:31.body in the doorway of his own bedroom. Sharif was stabbed more

:09:31. > :09:38.than ten times and while he lay here dying, his murder is made off with a

:09:38. > :09:44.small amount of cash and some jewellery. -- murderers. Today his

:09:44. > :09:47.granddaughter spoke about the effect it has had on her and her family.

:09:47. > :09:52.Its constant reminders. When you have spare time and you're sitting,

:09:52. > :09:57.you're thinking of everything that's happened. You don't escape it. It's

:09:57. > :10:02.even harder knowing that these people are out there and they're

:10:02. > :10:06.living their lives and our lives in some respects have been taken away

:10:06. > :10:12.from us because we can't rest easy, as these people are still out

:10:12. > :10:18.there. In June, Beds police released CCTV images of three possible

:10:18. > :10:21.suspects are approaching the house. Three minutes later, they ran away.

:10:21. > :10:26.Because of the circumstances of the offence at the type of people we're

:10:26. > :10:29.dealing with - they're quite young from all accounts - they might have

:10:29. > :10:33.thought to people. We've got jewellery that has been sold

:10:33. > :10:37.somewhere, no doubt, and they've had possession of that and the money and

:10:37. > :10:44.I feel sure someone locally knows who that was and who those people

:10:44. > :10:47.are. This has been a frustrating enquiry for Bedfordshire police but

:10:47. > :10:52.the force is hoping the offer of a 10,000 reward will finally

:10:52. > :10:54.encourage someone to come forward with that much-needed breakthrough.

:10:54. > :10:59.A Milton Keynes rail company has gone into administration, putting

:10:59. > :11:04.250 jobs at risk. A total of 500 workers repair and refurbish trains

:11:04. > :11:07.at Railcare in Wolverton and in Glasgow. The RMT union is calling on

:11:07. > :11:17.the government to step in to help with what they're calling a a

:11:17. > :11:20.

:11:20. > :11:24.short-term cash flow crisis. It's been eight years in the

:11:24. > :11:27.planning and more than a year in the construction - but it will be next

:11:27. > :11:30.spring before the new Center Parcs in Bedfordshire is open for

:11:30. > :11:33.business. This week our reporter Emma Baugh went behind the scenes of

:11:33. > :11:36.the holiday park to see how the development is taking shape.

:11:36. > :11:41.Week 62 of the 252 million build. It's been eight years is as we heard

:11:41. > :11:46.it was coming, attracting anger from some over whether the local area

:11:46. > :11:49.will cope. The company's head insists it will. We've done our

:11:49. > :11:55.surveys over many years in terms of traffic volumes and traffic flows.

:11:55. > :11:59.We don't have any concerns about any problems in that respect. We've

:11:59. > :12:01.built to new roundabouts - one at the top end of the site and one

:12:01. > :12:06.currently under construction - and that will ease the traffic flows

:12:07. > :12:11.immensely. So I don't anticipate any real problems. The company says the

:12:11. > :12:18.real boost to the area is through jobs. Recruitment is ongoing and

:12:18. > :12:22.training starts next month. When it opens, 1500 people will be working

:12:22. > :12:27.here - almost 9500 people have already searched the company's jobs

:12:27. > :12:33.website and its hope when they are employed, 75% of them will come from

:12:33. > :12:36.the local area. -- it is hoped. There is a massive range of

:12:36. > :12:43.employment opportunities at company-macro. There is a whole

:12:43. > :12:47.range. We're not seasonal. This is 355 days a year so those jobs are

:12:47. > :12:50.all permanent. The village will have more than 600 lodges in its first

:12:50. > :12:56.phase and another 70 coming later. It's been welcomed by some living

:12:56. > :13:01.locally. Well if it's going to create more jobs for the region then

:13:01. > :13:04.that's fine by me. I'm sure a lot of other people think the same. It'll

:13:05. > :13:11.bring a lot of work into the area and I know my husband has been

:13:11. > :13:16.looking himself, cos he's recently retired so it's a great idea, I

:13:16. > :13:23.think. It'll affect everybody with the traffic once it does start. Only

:13:23. > :13:26.time will tell but I think it's good. It's due to open next spring.

:13:26. > :13:36.The roads will be tested and the actual number of jobs finally

:13:36. > :13:41.

:13:41. > :13:44.realised. Environment experts have been called

:13:44. > :13:48.in to increase oxygen levels in the River Cam in Cambridge, after more

:13:48. > :13:51.than 300 fish were found dead in the water. The Environment Agency said

:13:51. > :13:55.the recent hot weather may have caused the problems as warm water

:13:55. > :13:58.holds less dissolved oxygen. People are being asked not to use the river

:13:58. > :14:01.between Baits Bite Lock and Upware while the work, which involves
