:00:18. > :00:22.A Northampton soldier blinded in one eye in Afghanistan pleads guilty to

:00:23. > :00:32.causing the death of his baby daughter. Poppy sales up, but

:00:33. > :00:44.membership of the British Legion is crashing. What happens when the old

:00:45. > :00:51.guard are gone? Most of our members are pension age. About the 70s by

:00:52. > :00:56.the 80s. All eyes on the FA Cup as aid of our non`league sides battle

:00:57. > :01:11.it out in the first round. I will have news of a chilly weekend

:01:12. > :01:15.weather forecast. Good evening. He was a soldier who lost an eye in

:01:16. > :01:20.Afghanistan who survived an attack only by playing dead, but today

:01:21. > :01:26.Lance Corporal Liam Culverhouse admitted causing the death of his

:01:27. > :01:30.own daughter. Khloe Adams died last year after being assaulted and

:01:31. > :01:35.suffering a severe drama. Her father has been warned he faces a

:01:36. > :01:41.significant jail sentence. Mark Francois left `` Liam Culverhouse

:01:42. > :01:46.left court today on bail after pleading guilty to causing the death

:01:47. > :01:51.of his child. His daughter was treated by doctors but never covered

:01:52. > :01:57.gas recovered. She died as a result of severe trauma, caused by an

:01:58. > :02:03.assault that happened in May, 2 11 when she was only seven weeks old.

:02:04. > :02:08.She was taken to Northampton General Hospital and treated by doctors for

:02:09. > :02:17.a year and a half. In November, last year, she died at children's Hospice

:02:18. > :02:26.aged 19 months. The injury to the former Lance Corporal's I was one of

:02:27. > :02:30.16 soldiers ambushed at a checkpoint in Helmand province. Six of his

:02:31. > :02:40.comrades were injured and five were killed. He said he had to pretend to

:02:41. > :02:45.be dead to stay alive. A gunman was standing over him while he lay

:02:46. > :02:50.injured on the ground. He was medically discharged from the Army

:02:51. > :02:55.in April. He was told by the judge he is facing a substantial jail

:02:56. > :03:02.sentence. We will learn more about the circumstances around Khloe

:03:03. > :03:06.Adams's death next year. Until then her father is under curfew and

:03:07. > :03:13.cannot spend time with children unaccompanied. A mother has told how

:03:14. > :03:17.she fell asleep while her partner was feeding their seven`week`old son

:03:18. > :03:21.and when she woke up the baby was dead. In a statement read to

:03:22. > :03:26.Nottingham Crown Court Jackqueline Parker told police that if she did

:03:27. > :03:30.not do it, it must have been her partner Adam Kightley, but she did

:03:31. > :03:36.not blame him. Baby Jamie died in hospital last year after having

:03:37. > :03:42.suffered 40 injuries. The couple both deny his murder. Police have

:03:43. > :03:47.dropped their investigation into alleged physical and sexual abuse at

:03:48. > :03:51.an orphanage in Bedfordshire. The former residents of Saint Francis

:03:52. > :03:58.boys' home in Shefford have been told there is no one alive left to

:03:59. > :04:02.prosecute. The abuse happened in the 50s and 60s. It is more than 40

:04:03. > :04:08.years since these men were children at the Catholic run Saint Francis

:04:09. > :04:13.boys' home. They say there are painful memories of physical abuse,

:04:14. > :04:17.but now they have learnt a police investigation into the allegations

:04:18. > :04:23.will be closed. Former residents have been told, a decision was made

:04:24. > :04:28.that as those suspects traced have died, the investigation cannot be

:04:29. > :04:33.taken any further as there are no living people to prosecute. The case

:04:34. > :04:38.will now be closed and only reopened if living suspects are traced. The

:04:39. > :04:42.home has now closed. A group of former residents went back at the

:04:43. > :04:47.weekend before they knew the investigation was closing. Tony

:04:48. > :04:51.Walsh claims he was sexually and physically abused by one of the

:04:52. > :04:57.priests. He hit me so hard the back of my head hit a door frame and

:04:58. > :05:02.split open. He punched me in the stomach and I fell to the floor and

:05:03. > :05:08.he kicked me whilst I was on the floor. He says his abuser was Father

:05:09. > :05:13.John Ryan he was arrested but never charged ten years ago. He has since

:05:14. > :05:19.died. The suspects had included four nuns who have also died and two

:05:20. > :05:24.other suspects who cannot be located. Former residents say they

:05:25. > :05:29.are saddened and disgusted by the decision to close the investigation

:05:30. > :05:33.and they are now taking a civil case against the Catholic Church. A

:05:34. > :05:37.spokesman for the Northamptonshire diocese says it's deeply regrets any

:05:38. > :05:46.hurt caused but stressed the claims are not proven. Earlier I spoke to a

:05:47. > :06:00.former resident, David Cox, who was at the home from the age of 9`1 . It

:06:01. > :06:05.is over a period of time, it is the sheer physical force and violence

:06:06. > :06:09.that was meted out in the form of punishment. I was caned up to the

:06:10. > :06:19.point of bleeding. I was punched at various times and lifted off my feet

:06:20. > :06:23.by a father, a priest in charge of us at the time. How do you feel

:06:24. > :06:30.about the fact the police have now decided to close their

:06:31. > :06:36.investigation? I am disappointed, I am very disappointed. This is the

:06:37. > :06:40.fourth enquiries since 1995 that the piece have conducted. Once I

:06:41. > :06:45.realised it was impossible to prosecute the dead people, it always

:06:46. > :06:51.seems as if they have got away with it. We do not know for sure that all

:06:52. > :06:57.the suspects are dead now because we believe the police investigation has

:06:58. > :07:01.not been as far as it should have been. There are names that have been

:07:02. > :07:06.given to the police and statements on various boys naming names of

:07:07. > :07:11.staff members who we believe I still alive and the police have never

:07:12. > :07:18.traced them and have never confirmed whether they are dead or alive. The

:07:19. > :07:21.Catholic Church says all the allegations are unproven, although

:07:22. > :07:25.they say they are sorry for any distress or harm that has been

:07:26. > :07:34.caused. What would you like to hear them say to you tonight? I think a

:07:35. > :07:37.very important step for the Catholic Church would be for the Bishop of

:07:38. > :07:45.Northampton, whose jurisdiction this came under, to meet a delegation of

:07:46. > :07:50.the old boys. At this moment in time we have just had the one statement

:07:51. > :07:56.from the church saying we are sorry about any that may have happened,

:07:57. > :08:02.but it is not proven, so that is it. It has been damning in its silence.

:08:03. > :08:08.What had been the effects of what you went through on the rest of your

:08:09. > :08:12.life from being at the home? One of the things is trusting people. As a

:08:13. > :08:17.child you trust the adults around you. Once that trust has been

:08:18. > :08:23.breached it becomes even difficult even in later life to trust people

:08:24. > :08:29.to that extent. I think also as well with some of the older people, or

:08:30. > :08:34.some of the other boys I have met at reunions, some have been affected

:08:35. > :08:39.psychologically in really bad ways. Everybody handles it differently.

:08:40. > :08:46.That is for sure. Either you come out of it very strong or a very

:08:47. > :08:49.weak. David Cox. The Independent police complaints commission have

:08:50. > :08:53.announced they are conducting a criminal investigation into the

:08:54. > :08:58.death of a man in police custody in Luton. 39`year`old Leon Briggs was

:08:59. > :09:03.held at Luton police station on Monday when he became ill. He was

:09:04. > :09:07.taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Family and friends

:09:08. > :09:11.have been protesting outside the police station this afternoon.

:09:12. > :09:16.Remembrance Sunday and the Poppy appeal, the biggest event of the

:09:17. > :09:21.year of the Royal British Legion. But in some parts of this region the

:09:22. > :09:28.organisation is in decline. Ranchers have closed and membership is down.

:09:29. > :09:34.I am at the Suffolk Regiment Museum in Bury Saint Edmunds in all that

:09:35. > :09:39.remains of the old barracks. They were amalgamated with the Royal

:09:40. > :09:44.Anglian Regiment in 1964, but it is a great place to reflect on past

:09:45. > :09:51.sacrifices. Let's look at the Royal British Legion. As Kettering

:09:52. > :09:57.prepares to remember it's fallen there are also cause not to forget

:09:58. > :10:02.the British Legion. Andy Smith is the chairman. At 58 he is the

:10:03. > :10:10.youngest member of his branch. In fact, there are just four of them.

:10:11. > :10:16.Most of them are pension age, late 70s or early 80s. We want to get

:10:17. > :10:22.somebody younger to organise things and get more actively involved. With

:10:23. > :10:29.so few members, the Royal British Legion struggled to find a

:10:30. > :10:32.standard`bearer for services. With the British Legion short of numbers

:10:33. > :10:38.and everything else, Andy has contacted me to help him out. In

:10:39. > :10:46.neighbouring Corby things are different. Here they have close to

:10:47. > :10:50.50 members, the youngest is just 19. It is important the younger

:10:51. > :10:55.generation are involved with poppies due to the fact that my family

:10:56. > :11:00.members, my dad, my uncle and my partner have all been in the Army

:11:01. > :11:06.and the forces. My grandad is a veteran and fit and healthy at the

:11:07. > :11:11.age of 92. The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921. Branches and

:11:12. > :11:17.clubs were set up across the country. In recent years many have

:11:18. > :11:22.vanished and recruiting members has become a challenge. In Corby the

:11:23. > :11:30.annual Poppy shop has become a focal point. In that respect we are

:11:31. > :11:34.fortunate because we moved into the ex`servicemen 's club. But the more

:11:35. > :11:40.we get out there, the more we can bring people in. In Kettering the

:11:41. > :11:46.local army cadets have stepped in to help with Sandy's remembrance

:11:47. > :11:50.service. It is hoped they can breathe new life into this

:11:51. > :11:55.historical Association. There are lots of ceremonies taking place

:11:56. > :12:00.across the region on Sunday, including a service of remembrance

:12:01. > :12:05.at the conversation `` conservation Hall at the Imperial War Museum and

:12:06. > :12:11.in Peterborough as well at the war memorial. Then the Mayor will lead a

:12:12. > :12:15.procession to Peterborough Cathedral.

:12:16. > :12:19.There is criticism tonight of Vodafone for failing to provide 3G

:12:20. > :12:26.coverage to customers in sparsely populated areas like the fans. The

:12:27. > :12:34.regulatory body off, has ordered the company to upgrade services or face

:12:35. > :12:37.a penalty. North Norfolk and areas like the fans of Cambridgeshire are

:12:38. > :12:42.pretty badly served by mobile coverage and people rely on mobile

:12:43. > :12:49.telephones for all sorts of matters, such as business or just socially.

:12:50. > :12:55.Why should they suffer? The NHS in Corby is asking people to go to a

:12:56. > :13:02.indeed genuinely in only life`threatening cases. It wants

:13:03. > :13:03.people to use an urgent care centre which has been given

:13:04. > :13:06.years. The figures reflect the impact of the Government's attempt

:13:07. > :13:07.to slim down the armed forces. Colchester still remains the largest

:13:08. > :13:21.military base in the region. Still to come: A clear out of the

:13:22. > :13:34.loft in Suffolk which uncovered precious wartime memories.

:13:35. > :13:39.News is coming in tonight of a climb`down by one of our new police

:13:40. > :13:41.commissioners over his expenses. BBC Online News revealed this morning

:13:42. > :13:44.that the Norfolk Commissioner Stephen Bett had been claiming

:13:45. > :13:48.expenses for his journey to work. That drew a response from the

:13:49. > :13:51.Justice Minister, who said he wanted the matter settled quickly. Mr Bett

:13:52. > :13:54.said his expenses were above board, but admitted some people might think

:13:55. > :13:57.it was wrong. Today's revelations come a year after the commissioners

:13:58. > :14:02.were elected to run our police forces. Our political correspondent,

:14:03. > :14:05.Andrew Sinclair, reports. Stephen bet is the region's only independent

:14:06. > :14:10.Police and Crime Commissioner, something he has always been very

:14:11. > :14:14.proud of. He cares about the reputation of the force. This is why

:14:15. > :14:19.he has moved so fast to end this controversy. An investigation for

:14:20. > :14:23.the Sunday Politics programme reveals he claimed more than ?3000

:14:24. > :14:27.in the last nine months for mileage between his home and his

:14:28. > :14:36.headquarters. No other Police Commissioner in the region claims

:14:37. > :14:42.for such mileage. He says he regards his main base at his home so he is

:14:43. > :14:55.therefore doing nothing wrong. I am very happy that what I do is my job

:14:56. > :14:59.wherever that is in the county. Critics have questioned whether this

:15:00. > :15:12.is OK. They pointed out that the Inland Revenue does not recognise,

:15:13. > :15:15.to work mileage. If they are not tax allowable I cannot see why they

:15:16. > :15:21.should be reimbursed by the Police Commissioner either. The justice

:15:22. > :15:24.minister said this controversy must be resolved quickly so as not to

:15:25. > :15:29.damage public confidence. At the same time, Mr Bennett says he will

:15:30. > :15:38.be paying back the money and no longer claiming mileage. All of this

:15:39. > :15:41.comes on the anniversary of PCC 's. Many people are still unsure about

:15:42. > :15:45.this role and the controversy on expenses will do nothing to improve

:15:46. > :15:58.confidence in the public. He said that I am very aware that

:15:59. > :16:02.headline such as these could easily tarnish the reputation of police in

:16:03. > :16:14.Norfolk and that is the last thing I would want. So, he is not happy

:16:15. > :16:18.about having to pay back this money. But he is putting the job first

:16:19. > :16:22.because it is a job he really likes and he thinks that he is making a

:16:23. > :16:30.difference and wants this to go away quickly.

:16:31. > :16:33.The subject of police commissioners is one of the topics being covered

:16:34. > :16:40.on this weekend's edition of Sunday Politics. It's on Sunday, on BBC One

:16:41. > :16:42.at the later time of 12:25. In the sport a lot of small teams are

:16:43. > :17:02.hoping for a bit of luck. It is a nail`biting time for Kenny

:17:03. > :17:05.'s fans. He's the man under the microscope.

:17:06. > :17:08.Chris Hughton's future is in sharp focus, with Norwich in the Premier

:17:09. > :17:11.League relegation zone. He made the point at yesterday's press

:17:12. > :17:15.conference that they've had a tricky run of games, making the rest of

:17:16. > :17:17.November crucial. This is what's in store: West Ham tomorrow, followed

:17:18. > :17:19.by Newcastle away, then Crystal Palace at home. But the manager's

:17:20. > :17:23.keeping calm. I speak with the Chief Executive and

:17:24. > :17:26.the Board on a regular basis and they're very supportive because

:17:27. > :17:30.we're all pushing in the right direction and what we musn't do is

:17:31. > :17:33.set the alarm bells ringing. The value of winning a couple of games

:17:34. > :17:36.can see a League position change quite dramatically and when that

:17:37. > :17:44.happens it's a completely different picture. So we're very much looking

:17:45. > :17:47.at the positives here. Fair point. Victory at Carrow Road

:17:48. > :17:56.could see Norwich move as high as 15th, above tomorrow's opponents,

:17:57. > :18:00.West Ham, and Fulham and Stoke. Norwich are far from cut adrift. The

:18:01. > :18:03.players say they're right behind the manager.

:18:04. > :18:06.Every game we go out and want to do well and pick up wins. It's been

:18:07. > :18:10.unfortunate with the result last week and there's been a bit of

:18:11. > :18:14.backlash on the manager and on the players, but at the end of the day

:18:15. > :18:18.we are the players that go over the white line and it's down to us to

:18:19. > :18:20.put in a performance and do right by him.

:18:21. > :18:24.The region's non league clubs have the chance to make the headlines

:18:25. > :18:27.this weekend in the first round of the FA Cup. Eight sides are still in

:18:28. > :18:30.it. Northamptonshire's Daventry Town are one of the lowest ranked teams

:18:31. > :18:36.left. They're at Chesterfield ` playing a league side for the first

:18:37. > :18:46.time. MUSIC PLAYS

:18:47. > :18:48.This is a timely reminder that football is not just about

:18:49. > :18:58.millionaires in the Premier League. All of these plays have done a day

:18:59. > :19:03.'s shift before coming here tonight. Daventry are a club on a roll. The

:19:04. > :19:14.going into uncharted territory in the FA Cup. It is the first time we

:19:15. > :19:26.have been with properly opposition. It is a first since 1886. Daventry

:19:27. > :19:38.are indebted to local businessmen who saved the club after a fire.

:19:39. > :19:49.Underdogs always do it in the FA Cup! Nothing can faze them. This is

:19:50. > :19:59.the skipper, who leaves tarmac by Dave. We have made money for the

:20:00. > :20:05.club so if we can win this week could earn some serious money. The

:20:06. > :20:12.chairman has invested a lot of money in the club. I don't think we will

:20:13. > :20:30.get to Wembley but I am looking forward to it. They are ready to

:20:31. > :20:37.stand up and be counted. It is not a time for the week. It is a time for

:20:38. > :20:45.strong characters because this will be tough. Anything can happen. The

:20:46. > :20:53.players have a lot of confidence. A cheque for ?18,000 is at stake for

:20:54. > :21:22.the winner. It is a chance to play a giant which makes this so special.

:21:23. > :21:26.The rest of our league sides are in Cup action except Ipswich Town,

:21:27. > :21:29.who've today signed former Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt until

:21:30. > :21:32.January. The move sees him re`united with his former Wolves boss Mick

:21:33. > :21:34.McCarthy. Hunt is available for tomorrow's trip to Blackpool in the

:21:35. > :21:37.Championship. Now a third of the England squad

:21:38. > :21:40.facing Argentina in the rugby tomorrow are from this region, the

:21:41. > :21:43.majority from Northampton Saints. Ben Foden's called up on the wing,

:21:44. > :21:46.Lee Dickson at scrum`half plus hooker Dylan Hartley. Lawes and Wood

:21:47. > :21:49.keep their places with fit`again Alex Corbisiero on the bench.

:21:50. > :21:51.Cambridge's Alex Goode and Tom Youngs from Norfolk make it eight

:21:52. > :21:55.players in all. They are a very good team, a very

:21:56. > :21:59.passionate and strong team. Yet seen in the Rugby Championship they have

:22:00. > :22:02.pushed through all those teams very close. So you can't look past any of

:22:03. > :22:07.these games, we know it's going to be a real tough game. That's it.

:22:08. > :22:15.Full previews to all this weekend's games on the BBC Sport website and

:22:16. > :22:19.much more too. When Steve Skinner from Suffolk had

:22:20. > :22:23.a sort out in his loft recently, he came across an old suitcase which

:22:24. > :22:26.belonged to his late father. When he opened it up, he was astonished to

:22:27. > :22:29.find it contained a treasure trove of old letters and poems. It also

:22:30. > :22:33.included his father's war`time diary. In a carefully written hand,

:22:34. > :22:37.he detailed the futility of the war and his hope that his own son would

:22:38. > :22:40.never have to fight. On the weekend when Britain pauses to remember,

:22:41. > :22:49.Kevin Burch reports on one man's innermost thoughts when the country

:22:50. > :22:53.was at war. One day he just walked into the

:22:54. > :23:05.house and said I have joined up. That was 1944. And of course, war

:23:06. > :23:11.broke out. He decided to do his bit. Steve Skinner remembers sales that

:23:12. > :23:14.his father told about North Africa in 1844 will stop but it was only

:23:15. > :23:19.when the suitcase was found that all those stories became very real.

:23:20. > :23:36.Moments of humour like the time his patrol sought cover overnight in a

:23:37. > :23:39.bar in. `` in a barn. 30 million Germans couldn't find him but one

:23:40. > :23:50.spider gave him a hard time in the garden! He jotted down his thoughts

:23:51. > :23:56.in this book. They are brilliant and beautiful, especially those

:23:57. > :24:07.dedicated to his wife. On that glorious Armistice Day we will be

:24:08. > :24:17.together and enjoy yourselves. It makes me sad, happy and proud. How

:24:18. > :24:28.deadly the sound of a reeking done. And B Spitfire two.

:24:29. > :24:47.I wonder if the millions of people who have died, do their families

:24:48. > :24:55.have memories like I do here? These are priceless. Let's get the weather

:24:56. > :25:07.now. Good evening. You may well get

:25:08. > :25:18.caught in the rain if you are heading out tonight. For the eastern

:25:19. > :25:24.parts of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex there is no rain to come this

:25:25. > :25:32.evening. It will look dry after midnight. Temperatures will drop
