:00:09. > :00:15.Here in the East... Flying footfall ` a decision's due on whether Luton

:00:16. > :00:20.airport can expand to 18 million passengers a year. And the dramatic

:00:21. > :00:26.moment when a robber gets more than he bargained for from a petrol

:00:27. > :00:31.station attendant. We will be here later in the programme looking back

:00:32. > :00:40.at the sporting year which saw our teams hit the heights. Walking was a

:00:41. > :00:50.problem. We have a live interview with Strictly Come Dancing judge

:00:51. > :00:54.Craig Revel Horwood. Good evening. First tonight, the plans for up to

:00:55. > :00:57.six million passengers a year more to pass through Luton Airport. A

:00:58. > :01:02.meeting has been taking place all day today to decide whether Luton

:01:03. > :01:05.should be allowed to expand. At the moment it's capacity is 12 million

:01:06. > :01:13.people, but airport bosses want to take that up to 18 million. An extra

:01:14. > :01:16.45,000 flights a year. It could mean 5,000 more jobs but it's not popular

:01:17. > :01:20.with people living around the airport. Louise Hubball has been in

:01:21. > :01:26.the meeting and a few moments ago sent us this report. The men from

:01:27. > :01:32.the airport, protesters and councillors went into the chamber

:01:33. > :01:37.for discussions at 10am. There is still no news of the decision.

:01:38. > :01:41.Protesters have been low`key today. There have been no placards, for

:01:42. > :01:48.example. This is a big decision and I have been looking at some of the

:01:49. > :01:54.issues. Luton Airport is the UK's fifth biggest airport and no plans

:01:55. > :01:56.make it a go, extending capacity from 12 million to 18 million

:01:57. > :02:02.passengers a year. This is the vision. Improvements to the terminal

:02:03. > :02:07.building, focusing on allowing more passengers to pass through more

:02:08. > :02:14.quickly. Outside it will be easier to get around with improved public

:02:15. > :02:20.transport links and car parking. The planning committee has listened to

:02:21. > :02:24.the arguments. On the one hand, how expansion will complement national

:02:25. > :02:32.strategies for economic growth. Passenger growth could go up to 18

:02:33. > :02:36.million. There will be 5000 more jobs and more economic activity so

:02:37. > :02:41.it is important to the region, not only for the point of view of the

:02:42. > :02:44.airport but for the economy as well. The protesters have spoken as well.

:02:45. > :02:53.This is what they are concerned about. Noise levels for those living

:02:54. > :02:56.and sleeping on the flight path. At the moment we endure it in peak

:02:57. > :03:02.periods but in the future, it will be all day long, a wall of noise

:03:03. > :03:07.across the countryside. The major impact will be the significant

:03:08. > :03:12.increase in the number of planes and the noise they make. You can hear

:03:13. > :03:18.one coming over at the moment and it is getting harder to hear what we

:03:19. > :03:24.are saying. Air pollution on a day when the wind changes direction. We

:03:25. > :03:31.could not have the windows and doors open because of the smell of air

:03:32. > :03:36.aviation fuel. It is so, so busy. Luton Airport was born in 1938. They

:03:37. > :03:41.are gathered here today to think about what the future holds. We are

:03:42. > :03:47.still waiting for news on that future. The meeting convened here at

:03:48. > :03:53.6pm and it is unclear when a decision will be reached. The main

:03:54. > :03:57.argument seems to be Luton Airport's economic growth versus the

:03:58. > :04:04.quality of life for people in the surrounding areas. As one councillor

:04:05. > :04:12.put it, Luton Airport's fame must not be Hertfordshire's shame. We

:04:13. > :04:17.will bring you the latest news when we have it at 10:30pm in our late

:04:18. > :04:20.bulletin. It was the dramatic moment when a woman petrol station

:04:21. > :04:28.attendant pulled a robber over the counter as he tried to steal money

:04:29. > :04:32.from the till. The attack was captured on CCTV and today two men

:04:33. > :04:35.were jailed for their part in the attack in Clifton in Bedfordshire.

:04:36. > :04:39.The court was told that 15 minutes earlier they'd tried to hold up a

:04:40. > :04:45.nearby food store. Fae Southwell reports. This was their first attack

:04:46. > :04:53.of the day, captured on CCTV. He tries to steal from a till.

:04:54. > :04:59.Outside, a man acts as lookout. Shop assistants, bewildered, attempts to

:05:00. > :05:02.intervene as the man runs off, leaving his jacket behind. The

:05:03. > :05:06.attack on this shop took place in May, the shop targeted on a bank

:05:07. > :05:12.holiday. Luton Crown Court heard that because the attack was

:05:13. > :05:15.unsuccessful, the two men tried their luck elsewhere. 15 minutes

:05:16. > :05:23.later they struck for a second time at a garage half a mile away. The

:05:24. > :05:28.shop owner sits waiting for customers but had no warning about

:05:29. > :05:35.what was going to happen. They came in and tried to take the cash. I put

:05:36. > :05:41.the money on the floor. While the struggle continues, this man grabs

:05:42. > :05:46.bottles from the shelf. The man is pulled over the counter and falls on

:05:47. > :05:51.top of the shop worker who is on the floor. Afterwards, she explains why

:05:52. > :06:03.she threw the money on the ground. I thought he would not come over to my

:06:04. > :06:08.side. Yes, it was a bit scary. He made off with around ?500 and was

:06:09. > :06:11.charged with robbery. Another man was charged with burglary.

:06:12. > :06:27.Sentencing the pair, the judge said... The shop worker suffered

:06:28. > :06:31.back injuries and a bruised shoulder, and spent time off work.

:06:32. > :06:38.Even though she is back in the shop, she is still nervous and refuses to

:06:39. > :06:43.work nights. Today, one man was sentenced to three years and another

:06:44. > :06:46.to two years. Police in Cambridge last night carried out stop checks

:06:47. > :06:50.in a street where a pregnant woman had her face slashed. Hayley Baker,

:06:51. > :06:53.who's 29, was attacked as she walked along Hertford Street. Last night,

:06:54. > :06:56.exactly a week on, a team of officers stopped motorists and

:06:57. > :07:00.pedestrians in the area in a bid to find the offender. Police say they

:07:01. > :07:03.are following a up a number of lines of enquiry. One of the worst

:07:04. > :07:06.accident blackspots in the Fens has re`opened after a campaign to

:07:07. > :07:10.improve it. The North Bank at Whittlesey has seen seven accidents

:07:11. > :07:13.and two deaths in as many months. The road runs alongside the River

:07:14. > :07:19.Nene at Whittlesey near Peterborough. The new barrier was

:07:20. > :07:22.installed at a cost of ?50,000. Families have taken to the streets

:07:23. > :07:27.of Peterborough today to protest about the closure of some the city's

:07:28. > :07:35.children centres. Peterborough City Council want to reduce the number of

:07:36. > :07:38.Sure Start centres. They were set up to help families with young

:07:39. > :07:48.children. The council says the changes could save them more than ?1

:07:49. > :07:52.million a year. Parents march on the city to have their say on what the

:07:53. > :07:57.centres mean to them. They are a lifeline to parents. It is in the

:07:58. > :08:02.centre of the community and people need somewhere to go to meet other

:08:03. > :08:08.mothers where they may not have any other contact. The centres can

:08:09. > :08:11.detect early differences in children and ensure that families get the

:08:12. > :08:17.support they need. Without them, these differences will not be picked

:08:18. > :08:27.up until they are older. There are 15 centres in Peterborough. The

:08:28. > :08:31.centres that people come here to protest about today operate across

:08:32. > :08:40.the city, but originally, they were set up by the last Labour government

:08:41. > :08:48.in deprived locations. The council want to target the most honourable

:08:49. > :08:52.families. `` vulnerable. All families can be worn rubble in many

:08:53. > :08:56.different ways. Lots of people I have spoken to have said that the

:08:57. > :09:01.centres can help them if they have depression or if they are isolated

:09:02. > :09:04.or if they have young babies. It is a big lifeline and it would be a

:09:05. > :09:11.shame if they closed them down. People have until early next year to

:09:12. > :09:18.have their say in what happens to them. Well, earlier I spoke to Wendy

:09:19. > :09:21.Ogle`Wellbourn from Peterborough City Council and I asked why these

:09:22. > :09:26.proposals had been brought forward. The last five years we have had cuts

:09:27. > :09:37.in the money we receive from government. Previously, where we had

:09:38. > :09:40.a specific pot of money for children's centres, we do not have

:09:41. > :09:47.any more, and we have to make tough decisions. Could this be avoided,

:09:48. > :09:50.though? We have to make tough decisions and we have to reduce

:09:51. > :09:54.funding somewhere, and I think because there are other services

:09:55. > :09:59.that parents can access, we believe that this is a proposal that needs

:10:00. > :10:03.to be seriously thought about. I know you want to target families in

:10:04. > :10:07.deprived areas, that any parent will tell you that it doesn't matter

:10:08. > :10:13.where you live, you can be vulnerable wherever you live. It is

:10:14. > :10:17.important to remember that we have a health visiting service and in

:10:18. > :10:21.Peterborough, we are going to double the number of health visitors than

:10:22. > :10:33.previously, and parents will have access to that. We will still make

:10:34. > :10:38.sure clinics can happen in areas. That is important. House set in

:10:39. > :10:43.stone are the closures? We are not talking about closures, we are

:10:44. > :10:48.talking about using the centres differently. We have put forward a

:10:49. > :10:53.proposal and where we go back to Cabinet, we will take on board what

:10:54. > :10:59.parents have said as part of the consultation, and amend that to try

:11:00. > :11:05.and minimise the impact. For the parents watching, what is your

:11:06. > :11:08.message to them? I would say that I am really grateful that they have

:11:09. > :11:13.taken the time to share their ideas about what we might be able to do

:11:14. > :11:17.differently to minimise the impact, and to reassure them that we are

:11:18. > :11:23.thinking about what they said and we will ensure that the health visiting

:11:24. > :11:27.services are still available. We will make sure parents can support

:11:28. > :11:30.themselves. There's been good news for the Peterborough pensioners who

:11:31. > :11:33.had all their family's Christmas presents stolen. On Wednesday we

:11:34. > :11:36.reported how a thief had entered the home of Evelyn and Mick Beaver and

:11:37. > :11:39.stole presents worth hundreds of pounds. But after their story was

:11:40. > :11:42.revealed on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, local business and

:11:43. > :11:45.the community have rallied round to make sure the family will not go

:11:46. > :11:47.short this Christmas. A consultation's been launched into a

:11:48. > :11:49.planning application for the controversial pirate island in

:11:50. > :11:52.Cambridgeshire. The island at Landbeach already exists and this is

:11:53. > :11:55.a retrospective application. South Cambridgeshire Council says their

:11:56. > :11:59.initial view is that the development has little impact on anyone nearby,

:12:00. > :12:02.but they want to make that is the case. The island which is privately

:12:03. > :12:09.owned, was created from material dredged from the lake when it was

:12:10. > :12:17.cleaned up. Plenty more to come with Stewart and Susie. A preview of the

:12:18. > :12:18.weekend's sport. I'll be back at ten with the late

:12:19. > :12:19.College opens in September with two year groups. I2020, it will be fully

:12:20. > :12:38.operational. `` by 2020. Still to come, the best sporting

:12:39. > :12:46.bits of 2013. And the Strictly judge as you have never seen him before.

:12:47. > :12:49.Earlier this year we met T Sandeman`Charles who had set up a

:12:50. > :12:53.campaign to get 10,000 people to sign up to the organ donor register.

:12:54. > :12:59.Two weeks ago, she reached her target.

:13:00. > :13:01.T's campaign called Save5 goes on. It's a subject she's passionate

:13:02. > :13:08.about because in 2010 T was diagnosed with two terminal lung

:13:09. > :13:11.diseases. She desperately needs a lung transplant and is on the

:13:12. > :13:18.waiting list at Papworth Hospital. Today, T was there for a regular

:13:19. > :13:23.check`up. For T Sandeman`Charles, the simple things in life are hard

:13:24. > :13:28.to do. Getting out of the car leaves her grasping for breath. She has her

:13:29. > :13:32.husband to help but four years after being diagnosed with two progressive

:13:33. > :13:39.lung diseases, a transplant is now her only hope. Like everybody, I

:13:40. > :13:47.just want to live. I want to live my life. So much I want to do, so much

:13:48. > :13:54.I feel I have to do. We first met T five years ago when she first

:13:55. > :13:58.launched her campaign. With the help of friends and family, two weeks

:13:59. > :14:04.ago, she reached her target of getting 10,000 people on the

:14:05. > :14:08.register. We did it. And when I say we, I do want to say that if it

:14:09. > :14:14.wasn't for my lovely husband, my fantastic family, the friends, the

:14:15. > :14:24.10,000 people who signed up, it would never have happened. Today, T

:14:25. > :14:28.was here to see Doctor Thomas to see if she is fit enough for a

:14:29. > :14:32.transplant. we have a tricky balance because we want to have you doing

:14:33. > :14:38.everything you can to be fit enough to get a transplant. Your breathing

:14:39. > :14:50.is not just your lungs, it is your muscles, your diaphragm. In 2011, 20

:14:51. > :15:06.six `` 26 people joined the list. Three people are still waiting. If T

:15:07. > :15:14.gets it, it can happen quickly. it could be in the region of 12 to 14

:15:15. > :15:18.hours wait from the call. When I am in bed, I can't do anything and I

:15:19. > :15:28.sometimes say to myself, will recall ever come? Will it end like this?

:15:29. > :15:34.And then I shed a tear stop then I picked myself up and I say, come on,

:15:35. > :15:40.T, come on, you have got to believe it will come. T is looking forward

:15:41. > :15:45.to Christmas and is positive about the future but when you are on a

:15:46. > :15:54.transplant waiting list, there is no other way to be. If you are

:15:55. > :16:08.interested in the organ donor register, you can call the donor

:16:09. > :16:13.line. You can log on to T's website at save5.org.uk.

:16:14. > :16:17.Let's move on to sport, now, and there's a packed programme of

:16:18. > :16:19.fixtures over the Christmas break. Here's Tom.

:16:20. > :16:23.Starting with Norwich, Chris Hughton insists it's one match at a time

:16:24. > :16:26.despite a crucial Christmas period which presents a real opportunity.

:16:27. > :16:28.City play all three teams currently in the Premier League relegation

:16:29. > :16:31.zone starting with bottom club Sunderland tomorrow. Then it's

:16:32. > :16:37.Fulham and Man U at home before Palace on New Year's Day. A

:16:38. > :16:44.productive Christmas could mean a giant leap towards survival? We

:16:45. > :16:50.played two games in two days over the Christmas period and it is

:16:51. > :16:54.difficult to plan for a second game when you're not quite sure what will

:16:55. > :16:59.happen in the first game. So, that is how it has to be. It is very much

:17:00. > :17:01.focusing on the next game. Ipswich's new signing Sylvan

:17:02. > :17:05.Ebanks`Blake isn't ruling out a promotion push in 2014. The striker

:17:06. > :17:08.has agreed a contract until the end of the season. Ipswich are tenth in

:17:09. > :17:11.the Championship heading into tomorrow's match with Watford. The

:17:12. > :17:20.forward says Mick McCarthy played a huge part in his decision to come.

:17:21. > :17:25.He is an honest man. I don't like to keep harking on about how honest he

:17:26. > :17:30.is, he is a good manager and has had a lot of success. I think I have had

:17:31. > :17:34.my most successful years under him so I think that shows you that he is

:17:35. > :17:37.good for me and I have been good for him.

:17:38. > :17:41.Now what's in store for the rest of our sides over Christmas? Here's a

:17:42. > :17:44.few key matches. MK Dons' form has been iffy and tomorrow the first of

:17:45. > :17:47.several games against sides eyeing the play`offs, home to Port Vale. On

:17:48. > :17:50.Boxing Day, Colchester`Stevenage. It could be crucial in both sides'

:17:51. > :17:53.fight against the drop. Peterborough host promotion rivals Brentford on

:17:54. > :18:01.New Year's Day. They lost against them last month.

:18:02. > :18:05.In League Two, Southend's biggest match of the festive period comes

:18:06. > :18:07.tonight. Home to Rochdale who are the place below them. And

:18:08. > :18:10.Northampton will hope to drag Portsmouth into the relegation mix

:18:11. > :18:13.when they meet between Christmas and New Year.

:18:14. > :18:16.Now, as we approach the end of the year, time to reflect on the

:18:17. > :18:20.sporting highs and lows from the last 12 months. It started in the FA

:18:21. > :18:27.Cup, features finals galore for Northampton and leading roles for

:18:28. > :18:33.our gymnasts. In the 50s, Luton beat Norwich to reach the FA Cup final.

:18:34. > :18:40.In 25th team, they but the first top flight. The Hatters reaching the

:18:41. > :18:46.fifth round at the expense of the Canaries. Suited and booted, later

:18:47. > :18:51.in the month, Greg Rutherford received an MBE from the Queen. I

:18:52. > :19:00.was not `` more nervous going into the palace that I have ever been in

:19:01. > :19:05.my career. This gymnast won the vault at the English championships.

:19:06. > :19:09.She is now targeting next year's Commonwealth Games. 30,000 Southend

:19:10. > :19:18.fans were disappointed as they lost. Former manager Paul Thurrock,

:19:19. > :19:26.sacked despite meeting the final. Newmarket trainer Gerard Butler was

:19:27. > :19:31.questioned over doping offences. In gymnast is, the plaudits went to Max

:19:32. > :19:41.Whitlock and Daniel Keating is, gold medals at the European

:19:42. > :19:52.Championships. She shouts! Max would later get silver. Northampton Saints

:19:53. > :19:58.lost to Arch rivals Leicester Tigers in the premiership final. Norwich

:19:59. > :20:02.had secured their premiership survival before they beat Manchester

:20:03. > :20:08.city and the club's youth team were winners in the FA youth cup. Henry

:20:09. > :20:14.Cecil had so many triumphs in his career but he lost a long, brave

:20:15. > :20:22.fight against cancer in June. Northampton Saints also lost their

:20:23. > :20:25.chairman to the same disease. Formula one came to

:20:26. > :20:33.Northamptonshire. It was an explosive occasion. Johnny Peacock

:20:34. > :20:42.did deliver, becoming world and Paralympic champion.

:20:43. > :20:48.Northamptonshire's cricketers, a dream summer, 2020 winners,

:20:49. > :20:59.champions and promotion to division one. `` Twenty20. Finally, at a

:21:00. > :21:03.different pace, Neil Robertson completed Snooker's report Crown,

:21:04. > :21:11.winning the UK Championships. So, 23rd Dean, done and dusted. `` 2013.

:21:12. > :21:15.And we heard in there about Gerard Butler. News today the Newmarket

:21:16. > :21:18.trainer has withdrawn his appeal against a five`year ban. He admitted

:21:19. > :21:22.injecting racehorses with banned drugs. Butler described the incident

:21:23. > :21:26.as one disastrous lapse. And don't forget racing over the

:21:27. > :21:30.jumps at Huntingdon on Boxing Day. 8,000 expected. Always popular. More

:21:31. > :21:36.sport on the website plus all the build`up to Saints' trip to Wasps

:21:37. > :21:39.tomorrow in the rugby. This time tomorrow evening, an

:21:40. > :21:42.estimated 14 million television viewers will be glued to their

:21:43. > :21:50.screens for the final of Strictly Come Dancing. In a blizzard of

:21:51. > :21:52.sequins and sambas, it's an all`female contest between Susanna,

:21:53. > :21:56.Abby, Sophie and Natalie. Of course the judges will have their say. The

:21:57. > :21:59.one who is hardest to please is Craig Revel Horwood. Tonight, he is

:22:00. > :22:06.appearing in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Southend, playing

:22:07. > :22:12.the Wicked Witch And I'm delighted to say he joins us now. Marks out of

:22:13. > :22:23.ten for your performance as the evil Queen? It has to be a ten. You look

:22:24. > :22:30.fabulous, darling. Thank you. It's an all`female final, I thought I

:22:31. > :22:37.would join the clan. You are the evil Queen, are you being typecast

:22:38. > :22:43.or are you a softy? I am an arm salute softy. It is only with bad

:22:44. > :22:48.dancing that I am really honest. I love the show, it is the nominal and

:22:49. > :22:52.has been for the last ten years. It is just amazing and it just gets

:22:53. > :22:56.better and better and this year has been extremely exciting. I don't

:22:57. > :23:01.know how you were taking me seriously with this face on,

:23:02. > :23:06.darling, but it is an amazing show and it deserves all the millions of

:23:07. > :23:09.people you is that it gets. And I am sure everyone at home is absolutely

:23:10. > :23:16.loving it and revving up for this final tomorrow night. I cannot wait

:23:17. > :23:19.to get there but I have one more show and I am starring in Snow White

:23:20. > :23:26.and the seven dwarfs alongside Lisa Riley who was on the show last year

:23:27. > :23:29.and she is fantastic as well. On Saturday nights coming you go to

:23:30. > :23:37.London and then you come back to do more panto? yes, I do. I do panto

:23:38. > :23:45.every single day that I am not at Strictly. Lisa is going on tour with

:23:46. > :23:51.that as well. She will be hosting it. We go to Wembley and all over

:23:52. > :23:58.the country. Glasgow Exeter. And that is the next day after we finish

:23:59. > :24:05.panto. It is very, very busy. Strictly takes six months of

:24:06. > :24:09.everyone's time. Obviously, you are known for being into the detail of

:24:10. > :24:15.the dancing and begin dancing is the most important thing, so who do you

:24:16. > :24:20.think is going to win tomorrow? If you want my honest opinion, I think

:24:21. > :24:23.Natalie probably should win but probably won't. I think because the

:24:24. > :24:30.final is very much of you this choice, `` the viewers choice, I

:24:31. > :24:35.think Susanna has a fair go at it because she has a lot of followers

:24:36. > :24:39.and at Abbey I think is really good. She has worked her way out. It is

:24:40. > :24:44.sensational to see someone who has never been able to dance before

:24:45. > :24:49.really to fly and go into the final, that is what is really exciting for

:24:50. > :24:55.me. I cannot wait to know the outcome. That was a good diplomatic

:24:56. > :25:03.answer because you nearly mentioned everybody. I can't wait to find the

:25:04. > :25:10.outcome as well. You do look gorgeous. Thank you for being on the

:25:11. > :25:13.show. Love from panto land. Break a leg. Let's get the weather.

:25:14. > :25:17.show. Love from panto land. Break a You are probably wondering about the

:25:18. > :25:25.weather. Wet and windy over the next few days. Windy on its way, wet,

:25:26. > :25:30.later. We have a slow`moving weather front, moving in our direction. It

:25:31. > :25:34.is making quite slow progress across the country. Some patchy rain across

:25:35. > :25:41.the West Country and Wales. It will get to us late at night. We have

:25:42. > :25:44.increasing amounts of clouds across the West. Already, the winds

:25:45. > :25:51.freshening with some gusts of around 30 miles an hour recorded in places.

:25:52. > :25:55.After midnight, perhaps something a bit for persistent and heavy.

:25:56. > :26:00.Certainly, it promises a wet end to the night. That weather front is

:26:01. > :26:07.bringing in much wilder Atlantic air. Below is our five to seven

:26:08. > :26:10.degrees. That is on the mild side. Looking at the average wind speeds,

:26:11. > :26:13.it will continue to pick up over the next few hours, reaching its peak

:26:14. > :26:18.around midnight and into the early hours. Expect a fresh to strong

:26:19. > :26:26.south`westerly wind. It may well touch gale force wait that's between

:26:27. > :26:30.40, perhaps 50 mph are possible. We start tomorrow is still quite wet

:26:31. > :26:35.and windy because this weather front is not in any rush to go anywhere.

:26:36. > :26:39.Certainly, a tight squeeze on the ice baths in this chart. The weather

:26:40. > :26:44.front, particularly in the eastern half, it is not going anywhere fast

:26:45. > :26:48.so expect a wet and windy morning. There will be some try interludes

:26:49. > :26:54.during the day but certainly not the best of days. It is technically

:26:55. > :26:58.milder because our temperatures will be in double figures but factor in

:26:59. > :27:05.the moderates to south`westerly `` moderate wind and it will not yield

:27:06. > :27:08.much milder. Another band of rain is lighted to come through both the

:27:09. > :27:13.night so that promises a wet start to Sunday. Looking ahead as we

:27:14. > :27:16.approach Christmas, this slow spinning in for Monday, late on

:27:17. > :27:23.Monday, some rain and certainly for Christmas eve, it is looking wet and

:27:24. > :27:27.windy. You can see the wind speeds there. Looking largely dry on

:27:28. > :27:33.Sunday. Into Monday, we have some rain arriving on that below later

:27:34. > :27:42.and West and windy day on windy `` on Christmas eve. Have a great

:27:43. > :27:46.weekend. Goodbye.
