:01:06. > :01:07.with specialist search and rescue teams scouring the water

:01:08. > :01:13.We learned this afternoon hd was with a group of friends,

:01:14. > :01:15.swimming in the water, when he got into difficulty.

:01:16. > :01:18.Apparently he couldn?t swim and he went in with a group

:01:19. > :01:23.of boys and they all held on to him so that he wouldn?t go under.

:01:24. > :01:57.So it isn't safe at all, especially for young kids.

:01:58. > :02:00.We have been told the boy who has gone missing is a year nine pupil,

:02:01. > :02:04.Tonight, dozens of his friends have come down to the water to w`tch

:02:05. > :02:09.They have all said to me it is a tragedy that this has happened

:03:14. > :03:16.The Barnfield Federation runs a college and six academies,

:03:17. > :03:18.teaching thousands of pupils across Luton and Bedfordshire.

:03:19. > :03:20.But, since October, there have been three investigations

:03:21. > :03:21.into the manipulation of gr`des and financial mismanagement.

:03:22. > :03:24.Last year, Judy Oliver becale chair of governors,

:03:25. > :03:26.aiming to sort out the problems and keep the federation going.

:03:27. > :03:30.Judy has quit, and is speakhng publicly for the first time.

:03:31. > :03:33.Do you think the Barnfield problem was it simply got too big?

:03:34. > :03:34.Yes, Barnfield has become overstretched.

:03:35. > :03:37.It did a great job locally and some of the aspirations of the

:03:38. > :03:43.previous chief executive went beyond the capabilities of the strtcture.

:03:44. > :03:45.The governors themselves were criticised for poor oversight

:03:46. > :03:47.of finances, including a large payoff for Sir Peter

:03:48. > :03:53.Birkett, the former princip`l of the college, who left last @ugust.

:03:54. > :03:55.The board accepted changes were needed, but felt the Governlent

:03:56. > :04:01.Two ministries, the Departmdnt for Education and the Business Linistry,

:04:02. > :04:08.they had to funding agencies, the EFA funding to schools,

:04:09. > :04:17.It was very confusing, very frustrating.

:04:18. > :04:21.Probably made it more difficult than it needn't have been.

:04:22. > :04:25.So, what effect will the split actually have?

:04:26. > :04:30.They can continue wearing the same uniform,

:04:31. > :04:35.be the same name for several years because it is an amicable solution.

:04:36. > :04:37.The benefit to Barnfield College is we can concentrate

:04:38. > :04:39.on further education for those students, we can give them

:04:40. > :04:47.the skills and everything they need to become employable in Luton.

:04:48. > :04:49.It has been acknowledged in partnership with this college

:04:50. > :04:52.has helped raise standards at the academies, in partictlar

:04:53. > :04:55.among pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

:04:56. > :04:57.After the split, there will be a separate bo`rd

:04:58. > :05:02.of governors and in college and another one in the acaddmy.

:05:03. > :05:05.In a joint statement, they said the priority would be to

:05:06. > :05:28.ensure students continue to receive an excellent education.
