:00:28. > :00:35.This was the moment when police swooped on a lorry

:00:36. > :00:39.in Peterborough, after reports that 16 people were hidden inside.

:00:40. > :00:44.It has now been confirmed that all 16 were from the North African

:00:45. > :00:47.and it is thought they were trying to enter the UK illegally.

:00:48. > :00:51.The lorry had just arrived here in Peterborough to deliver parts

:00:52. > :00:56.The people inside were discovered at around 9:30am

:00:57. > :01:00.The security team at the site called police after the driver said he

:01:01. > :01:04.Cambridge police arrested the ten men and six women

:01:05. > :01:06.and alerted the Home Office immigration enforcement team.

:01:07. > :01:07.The suspected illegal immigrants were to be interviewed

:01:08. > :01:11.by enforcement officers before going into police custody.

:01:12. > :01:14.A Home Office spokesperson said, we work closely with the police to

:01:15. > :01:19.Where someone is found to have no legal right to remain in the UK,

:01:20. > :01:26.Thousands of lorries make their way through our region every single day.

:01:27. > :01:28.Many of them begin their journeys on the continent, arriving at

:01:29. > :01:36.They then make their way along the A14 across Northamptonshire,

:01:37. > :01:40.It is the responsibility of the lorry drivers and

:01:41. > :01:43.their companies to make sure no`one is hidden inside the vehicle.

:01:44. > :01:46.If that happens and they haven't taken adequate

:01:47. > :01:50.steps to prevent it, they can be fined ?2000 for each person entering

:01:51. > :01:56.Yet less than two weeks ago in the south of our region, 35 people,

:01:57. > :02:02.including some children, were rescued from a container in Essex.

:02:03. > :02:06.They were Sikhs from Afghanistan and one man died during the crossing.

:02:07. > :02:09.The others were found after being heard shouting for help and banging

:02:10. > :02:14.A reminder of how dangerous such journeys can be and equally how

:02:15. > :02:24.The concern over stowaways could be one of the issues contributing to a

:02:25. > :02:30.Haulage firms across the East say they're struggling to

:02:31. > :02:33.recruit and they'll soon lose some of the drivers they currently have.

:02:34. > :02:39.99% of drivers are over the age of 25 and many reaching retirement

:02:40. > :02:42.age are refusing to study for a new qualification,

:02:43. > :02:47.meaning after September 10th they'll be unable to drive.

:02:48. > :02:50.But it's not an attractive profession for many younger people.

:02:51. > :02:53.They'd have to pay thousands of pounds to train and they don't

:02:54. > :02:57.I asked the Road Haulage Association whether companies could cover

:02:58. > :03:06.But the problem you have with companies, they say,

:03:07. > :03:10.I'll train you up, how long are you going to stay with me for?

:03:11. > :03:13.Are you going to move down the road for an extra 5p an hour?

:03:14. > :03:17.If lifestyle is a factor, surely better pay might make them

:03:18. > :03:21.Wouldn't it be better if, like on the continent,

:03:22. > :03:25.they have better roadside facilities, supplied by government?

:03:26. > :03:28.We have better roadside facilities, truck parts,

:03:29. > :03:33.They are secure and it keeps everybody in one place.

:03:34. > :03:49.That will cut down on what people call the lifestyle,

:03:50. > :03:52.but in fact some people like living in a truck from Monday to

:03:53. > :03:56.If it is an ageing industry and all the drivers are not going to

:03:57. > :03:58.take this qualification, what kind of situation will we be

:03:59. > :04:05.A lot of the drivers, who drive your farmers, are temporary drivers.

:04:06. > :04:08.They may be retired and the farmers were calling them during harvest

:04:09. > :04:11.If they haven't done the driving licence,

:04:12. > :04:19.When the Christmas rush starts in October,

:04:20. > :04:22.the drivers aren't going to be there to be called in for holiday relief.

:04:23. > :04:24.Eventually, when we haven't got enough drivers, goods in the

:04:25. > :04:28.When you go to do your weekly shopping at the major

:04:29. > :04:36.97% of everything we use in this country goes by road.

:04:37. > :04:41.Obviously the country needs to keep on functioning and we need

:04:42. > :04:45.We have got to be able to recruit younger people in the industry.

:04:46. > :04:48.It is not just the fact that you start

:04:49. > :04:51.in the industry at 18 as a driver and that is that until you are 65.

:04:52. > :04:55.There is a career path, a progression if they want to do it.

:04:56. > :04:58.They go from driving to office staff, to management,

:04:59. > :05:05.I want to ask you about our main story tonight,

:05:06. > :05:08.the fact that 16 people have been found in a lorry in Peterborough.

:05:09. > :05:12.How much of an issue is that for lorry drivers?

:05:13. > :05:20.They don't have monitors to check for CO2 emissions.

:05:21. > :05:22.All they have is their eyes and their ears.

:05:23. > :05:26.If the vehicle is secure, all the flaps down and secured, if it is a

:05:27. > :05:30.box van, if the rear door is locked and secured, as far as they are

:05:31. > :05:46.If they carry out these checks that is the best they can do.

:05:47. > :05:48.It could be but security at the ports

:05:49. > :05:52.Police are searching for an attacker who sexually

:05:53. > :05:56.It happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning in this alleyway

:05:57. > :06:00.The 20`year`old described his attacker as Mediterranean

:06:04. > :06:06.Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabularies found that out

:06:07. > :06:09.of 82 crimes they reviewed only 65 were properly recorded.

:06:10. > :06:12.It's led to concern that some victims aren't getting

:06:13. > :06:16.But the inspectors also noted that while some data recording had

:06:17. > :06:20.improved, staff were struggling because of a lack of resources.

:06:21. > :06:23.Football, and with the transfer window closing on Monday,

:06:24. > :06:27.the MK Dons manager says he may struggle to hold onto his players.

:06:28. > :06:29.Karl Robinson says he doesn't want to sell but interest

:06:37. > :06:44.I'll leave you with Claire and the weather forecast.

:06:45. > :06:51.The next few days looking cloudy but some good news for Sunday.

:06:52. > :06:56.In the time being we are seeing a lot of cloud travelling

:06:57. > :06:59.across the country as well as the odd spot or two of rain,

:07:00. > :07:04.A rather cloudy and breezy night, but it will mean temperatures

:07:05. > :07:07.holding around 12 or 13 degrees so a mild night.

:07:08. > :07:09.Tomorrow morning starts on a breezy note.

:07:10. > :07:13.It will be bright in places, that cloud rattling across East Anglia.

:07:14. > :07:16.The odd spot of rain can't be ruled out and temperatures holding

:07:17. > :07:23.This is the picture for the next few days, low`pressure

:07:24. > :07:26.moving on with high`pressure moving in from the south.

:07:27. > :07:30.In a moment your national forecast, but right now let me leave you with

:07:31. > :07:48.Hello! We had a touch of autumn in August, now we are hoping for a bit

:07:49. > :07:52.of summer in September, both as a result of former Hurricanes. It was

:07:53. > :07:55.Hurricane Bertha that brought cold air a week or two ago, now we have
