:00:00. > :00:00.That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me,

:00:00. > :00:00.Hello and welcome to Thursday's Look East.

:00:00. > :00:09.The failings in the system that led this young

:00:10. > :00:17.Today his widow tells Look Dast the professionals let her husband down.

:00:18. > :00:19.I felt I was a bit ill`informed really.

:00:20. > :00:22.Had I known all of the facts, I wouldn't have allowed him

:00:23. > :00:26.Back on the road ` the controversial Ely southern bypass finally gets

:00:27. > :00:30.We'll be here later in the programme.

:00:31. > :00:43.Charley Hull brings a touch of celebrity to her old primarx school.

:00:44. > :00:49.And celebrating the BBC Introducing. Turning undiscovered talent into

:00:50. > :00:57.household names. First tonight: The serious failings

:00:58. > :01:01.that led a vulnerable man to take his own life. Graeme Price, a father

:01:02. > :01:05.from Bedfordshire, died frol multiple injuries after falling from

:01:06. > :01:08.a Luton car park. Despite ndeding treatment for a serious mental

:01:09. > :01:13.illness, he was discharged from hospital. The 33`year`old w`s

:01:14. > :01:17.diagnosed as suffering from depression with psychosis on June

:01:18. > :01:20.the 9th last year. He should have been admitted to a mental hdalth

:01:21. > :01:23.unit, but there were no beds available. He remained on a hospital

:01:24. > :01:27.ward until July the 2nd. Seventeen days later, he took his own life.

:01:28. > :01:31.His family say he was failed by the system. Neil Bradford has spoken to

:01:32. > :01:45.his widow. There is a massive stigma attached

:01:46. > :01:50.to mental health and unless people educated... Through adversity, Linda

:01:51. > :01:54.Price appears to have found an incredible strength. Last ydar, she

:01:55. > :01:58.was with her husband when hd took his own life. With dignity `nd

:01:59. > :02:04.composure, she wants her story to help others. He was an amazhng man,

:02:05. > :02:15.he was very educated, very confident. He enjoyed travel, food,

:02:16. > :02:18.love work and loved his famhly. Graham was 33. A father and a

:02:19. > :02:23.project manager from Bedfordshire. Without warning, he suffered an

:02:24. > :02:30.enormous break down. he camd home from work one Tuesday, two days

:02:31. > :02:38.later he was psychotic. He started imagining that people were coming

:02:39. > :02:45.for him and he got very par`noid, very anxious, very scared. @fter a

:02:46. > :02:49.short stay in hospital, he tnderwent risk assessment and there w`s no

:02:50. > :02:53.plan for his care. Just 17 days later, while on a shopping trip in

:02:54. > :02:59.Luton, he fell from this multistorey car park. he just jumped out of the

:03:00. > :03:08.car and ran straight to the ledge, I heard him fall. It wasn't rdally the

:03:09. > :03:14.outcome I expected, but at that point, when I saw him jump out of

:03:15. > :03:21.the car onto the ledge, I knew I was in trouble and I knew it wasn't

:03:22. > :03:28.going to tear out the way I wanted it. He was very ill. Today `t an

:03:29. > :03:32.inquest, the coroner ruled the failings in Graham's care rdsulted

:03:33. > :03:35.in lost opportunities. The health just responsible has expressed his

:03:36. > :03:46.condolences in a statement this afternoon. They said:

:03:47. > :03:52.there was no real explanation. It was more just that he was gdtting

:03:53. > :03:56.better and he will get bettdr. I felt I was a bit ill informdd and

:03:57. > :04:02.had I known all the facts, H would not have allowed him to comd home.

:04:03. > :04:05.Linda is now determined to raise awareness about mental illndss and

:04:06. > :04:08.to campaign for better care. The lasting legacy of the husband she

:04:09. > :04:15.misses so much. A man who subjected his babx

:04:16. > :04:18.daughter to a violent attack has today been jailed for life for her

:04:19. > :04:20.murder. 23`year`old Aurimas Medvedevas beat, shook and bit his

:04:21. > :04:23.nine`week`old daughter Auksd in September last year. Her mother

:04:24. > :04:27.returned home in Clifton Avdnue in Peterborough from work to fhnd the

:04:28. > :04:31.child dead in her cot. Medvddevas had claimed the child had f`llen out

:04:32. > :04:35.of her cot, but changed his plea to guilty two days into his trhal. We

:04:36. > :04:41.need to remember this was a particularly vulnerable

:04:42. > :04:52.nine`week`old child and this man, he's shook her, he's thrown her

:04:53. > :04:55.he's hit her and he's bitten her. What would possess someone to do

:04:56. > :04:58.that, I don't know. But tod`y's sentence does provide some dlement

:04:59. > :05:01.of hope for the mother ` it allows her to know what happened to her

:05:02. > :05:04.daughter and make the first steps in her recovery. It will be with her

:05:05. > :05:07.forever, but it certainly allows her to move on with the next st`ge of

:05:08. > :05:10.her life. The decision came this afternoon

:05:11. > :05:13.after the Government gave The 1.7 kilometre bypass

:05:14. > :05:17.will cost ?30 million. Supporters claim it'll ease

:05:18. > :05:19.the city's growing traffic congestion, but opponents s`y it'll

:05:20. > :05:21.ruin an historic landscape. Our reporter Emma Baugh is hn Ely

:05:22. > :05:35.for us now ? Emma. Well, one of the pressure points

:05:36. > :05:39.near to the railway station here. And when the crossing barridrs come

:05:40. > :05:43.down, traffic can be brought to a standstill. It can be going nowhere.

:05:44. > :05:45.They had been waiting for a bypass it for 30 years and now fin`lly

:05:46. > :05:48.they may be getting one. Great news,

:05:49. > :05:50.great news for the people of Ely It's been a long time coming

:05:51. > :05:54.but it will solve a long`term problem which is about the railway

:05:55. > :05:57.with the trains which will be more And also it will enhance thd area

:05:58. > :06:10.around the railway station, as well. The council says it has alrdady got

:06:11. > :06:14.the money and if you look at these pictures, we can see what it may

:06:15. > :06:21.look like. I have been speaking to people in Ely tonight. It is jolly

:06:22. > :06:28.good. We live just here and the traffic I goes by is amazing. The

:06:29. > :06:33.traffic going down broad Street shakes all the old houses. Ht is an

:06:34. > :06:38.excellent idea and has been crying out for this bypass for somd time.

:06:39. > :06:45.It will make commuting so mtch easier. the sooner it gets done the

:06:46. > :06:49.better. It is a wonderful place to see and visit, is Ely. I'm ` bit

:06:50. > :06:54.biased because I don't really like to see things change, I must admit.

:06:55. > :06:59.As you can hear, not everybody is happy. Least of all, English

:07:00. > :07:05.Heritage to say it will destroy an iconic view of Ely Cathedral. The

:07:06. > :07:07.council says it will go ahe`d and we could see bulldozers on the ground

:07:08. > :07:13.as early as next year. A racehorse owned by the Quden

:07:14. > :07:15.and trained in Newmarket has been stripped of a second`place finish in

:07:16. > :07:18.one of the world's biggest races. Estimate finished runner up

:07:19. > :07:21.in July's Ascot Gold Cup and was one of eight horses

:07:22. > :07:23.which tested positive for Morphine. A ruling by the British Horseracing

:07:24. > :07:26.Authority exonerates the Northamptonshire firm ` saying

:07:27. > :07:41.feed it provided was contamhnated Thank you the Queen at Royal Ascot.

:07:42. > :07:43.Here with Estimate in the p`ddock. Her Majesty learned today hdr

:07:44. > :07:48.racehorse will be officiallx disqualified after tests detected

:07:49. > :07:52.morphine. He came from horsd feed from here, Hodson Dorrell near

:07:53. > :07:57.Kettering. Security guards were outside its gates today. Thd horse

:07:58. > :08:00.racing authority said the contamination had come about

:08:01. > :08:05.innocently. It may have comd from poppy seeds or some other p`sture

:08:06. > :08:09.plant. But if you look therd, you can see the royal coat of arms they

:08:10. > :08:18.have been supplying Her Majdsty with horse racing feed since the 198 s.

:08:19. > :08:23.There is inevitably talk, though not from the Queen at this stagd. There

:08:24. > :08:27.has been talk among some of the other racehorse owners involved of

:08:28. > :08:31.seeking compensation from Hodson Dorrell. The company told us

:08:32. > :08:35.long`standing relationships in the racing industry remain important.

:08:36. > :08:41.Any compensation issues are in the hands of the insurers. Caroline

:08:42. > :08:44.Bailey is a racehorse traindr Neil but Northampton. Contaminatdd food

:08:45. > :08:50.cannot serious financial consequences she says. It is a big

:08:51. > :08:57.concern, we must abide by the rules. We are running our horses to

:08:58. > :09:01.win and if you lose these r`cers get placed bat`macro getting pl`ce, it

:09:02. > :09:12.has a knock`on effect. `` gdtting placed. The Queen's trainer was not

:09:13. > :09:15.blamed or find today. But hdre, they will be hoping their relationship

:09:16. > :09:21.with the horse racing industry has not been tarnished.

:09:22. > :09:24.Police investigating a violdnt robbery during which an elddrly

:09:25. > :09:27.couple were tied up and thrdatened have released CCTV footage of a man

:09:28. > :09:30.they want to speak to. The couple were attacked at their home in

:09:31. > :09:33.Addlecroft Close in the Kingsthorpe area of Northampton at the dnd of

:09:34. > :09:36.July. They answered their door to two men claiming to be paraledics

:09:37. > :09:39.who took cash and a credit card The card was later used by this man at

:09:40. > :09:51.the Sainsbury's in Weedon Road and the St James' branch of Barclays.

:09:52. > :09:54.It's been ten years in the laking, but now researchers from

:09:55. > :09:56.Addenbrooke's Hospital are nearing the end of one of the biggest health

:09:57. > :10:00.studies of its kind in the country. It's called The Fenland Study and

:10:01. > :10:02.has involved some 12,000 people across Cambridgeshire betwedn the

:10:03. > :10:05.ages of 30 and 62. Gathering details about everything from body fat, diet

:10:06. > :10:08.and levels of physical activity the results will help shape Govdrnment

:10:09. > :10:12.health policy for years to come But why the Fens? Well, it has `

:10:13. > :10:16.population of 9,000. And, according to Public Health England, h`s higher

:10:17. > :10:20.than average rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Anna

:10:21. > :10:26.Todd has this report. Ten ydars ago, Mark Cromwell, then 49, gavd up his

:10:27. > :10:31.lifestyle anonymity to science for one week. He allowed researchers to

:10:32. > :10:38.drill down into the nitty`gritty of his existence. Today, he is back to

:10:39. > :10:44.see how things have changed. I was slightly fitter ten years ago, I did

:10:45. > :10:47.a lot more exercise. The last few years, my work has consisted of more

:10:48. > :10:52.paperwork rather than being out moving around, so, obviouslx, that

:10:53. > :10:58.has had a knock`on effect, H would have thought. The scanner which

:10:59. > :11:01.measures body fat, shows th`t Mark is still fit and well. But, as we

:11:02. > :11:11.can see, that is not always the case. People would have probably put

:11:12. > :11:13.on a little bit of weight, lost people. Not everyone, but on

:11:14. > :11:16.average. Most people probably have decreased their activity levels and

:11:17. > :11:23.it is thought young people `re generally more active than older

:11:24. > :11:28.people, so we expect that change. But we don't know how fit you were

:11:29. > :11:34.before we actually started. That will be a long process. And that is

:11:35. > :11:37.what is happening now. 12,000 people across the Fens gave up thehr time

:11:38. > :11:42.for Phase One. Now, it is hoped they will come back for Phase Two: the

:11:43. > :11:46.results. What makes this sttdy unique is the level of scientific

:11:47. > :11:51.detail, creating a very precise very real picture of you. Rhght down

:11:52. > :11:55.to the last plate of chips that you ate to the last ounce of fat that

:11:56. > :11:58.was gained. With fast food `nd frothy coffee on every corndr, it's

:11:59. > :12:05.not surprising that obesity is the buzzword in medical science. But it

:12:06. > :12:12.is the socio`economic factors that make Fenland ideal for this study.

:12:13. > :12:15.Over a quarter of adults ard obese, the large towns of Cambridgd,

:12:16. > :12:21.Wisbech and Ely bringing together wealth and poverty. If you `re rich

:12:22. > :12:25.enough to be able to afford to live in the centre of Cambridge, it is

:12:26. > :12:28.much easier for you to walk or cycle to your place of employment. If you

:12:29. > :12:32.live in Wisbech or Ely, that may not be case. Similarly, if you have a

:12:33. > :12:40.high income, you may be mord likely to afford healthier foods and have

:12:41. > :12:42.better access to healthy foods, possibly. They could take ydars to

:12:43. > :12:46.complete the Fenland study. But scientists hope the evidencd of

:12:47. > :12:50.diabetes, obesity and heart disease will jolt the Government into

:12:51. > :13:00.action. Our modern lifestylds are as serious a threat as any othdr.

:13:01. > :13:03.Staff at Luton`based Monarch Airlines have voted FOR a p`y cut as

:13:04. > :13:07.part of plans to restructurd the company. More than 90% of the

:13:08. > :13:12.workforce voted in favour of pay cuts of up to a third. Strike action

:13:13. > :13:16.had been threatened over pl`ns to cut a thousand jobs. News of the

:13:17. > :13:19.vote comes the day after confirmation the company cotld have

:13:20. > :13:26.new owners next month. The company is in talks with an investmdnt firm

:13:27. > :13:28.with plans to transform it hnto a low`cost airline.

:13:29. > :13:34.James Burridge will be here with your late update at 10.30pm. For now

:13:35. > :13:44.We go back to school with golfer Charley Hull as some of the world's

:13:45. > :13:47.best golfers gather in Scotland for the start of the Ryder Cup.

:13:48. > :13:49.And celebrating the success of BBC Introducing.

:13:50. > :13:52.The under the radar, unsigndd, and undiscovered acts, some of whom

:13:53. > :14:03.Brewing is a growing industry in this part of the world.

:14:04. > :14:06.Most of the barley used for brewing beer comes from farms

:14:07. > :14:10.So the raw materials are right on our doorstep.

:14:11. > :14:13.There are 114 breweries across the East nearly 10%

:14:14. > :14:20.And most of our 4,300 pubs sell cask ale

:14:21. > :14:31.So we grow it we brew it and we drink it as Ian Barmer reports.

:14:32. > :14:38.This Norfolk ale is typical of a small brewery springing up `cross

:14:39. > :14:41.the East. Just outside Fakenham she brews 3 billion years. It is a small

:14:42. > :14:47.operation producing around 4,00 pints a week. Already she h`s won a

:14:48. > :14:52.Gold award from the campaign for real ale. Ebola more interested

:14:53. > :14:57.about their food and drink, where it comes from, what goes into ht.

:14:58. > :15:05.Therefore, that has contribtted to the rise of interest, and the

:15:06. > :15:08.excitement. What is cask ald? It is unpasteurised and contains live

:15:09. > :15:14.Easter so it continues to fdrment in its cask in the pub cellar. It isn't

:15:15. > :15:18.fizzy, only containing natural carbon dioxide. It's what m`ny

:15:19. > :15:23.people know as real ale. Adnams is one of the biggest producers of car

:15:24. > :15:27.scale in the east and that dquates to more than 18 million pints a

:15:28. > :15:34.year. Brewing here is high`tech but the process doesn't change. This is

:15:35. > :15:41.rinsing the Bali to extract all the sugar, which is then converted to

:15:42. > :15:48.alcohol. This is the special place where we store Bali. Adnams use

:15:49. > :15:53.barley grown in Norfolk and Suffolk. It is the Champagne region for Bali.

:15:54. > :15:59.This is the black mortar colour up some of our beers. Interesthng beer

:16:00. > :16:05.is growing. This is one of the brewery tours and more interest has

:16:06. > :16:10.translated to record sales hn 2 14. It is a fantastic time for cask

:16:11. > :16:14.beer. We are growing, most breweries at growing, there are three

:16:15. > :16:20.breweries opening up in the UK now each week. In Newton near C`mbridge,

:16:21. > :16:24.they are proud of their cask ales. Sales are good, interest is growing.

:16:25. > :16:30.There are more microbrewerids being set up. We have won over thd hill in

:16:31. > :16:37.Haston, who is doing great guns And that helps to improve the

:16:38. > :16:43.experience. 70 million pints of car scale are drunk in this reghon every

:16:44. > :16:48.year. And that is keeping breweries in business and helping pubs to keep

:16:49. > :16:51.open. `` 70 million pints of cask ale.

:16:52. > :16:54.Members of the UK Independence Party are on their way to Doncastdr this

:16:55. > :16:55.afternoon for their annual conference.

:16:56. > :16:58.UKIP says it will deliver "a strong clear and simple lessage

:16:59. > :17:01.The party, which already has a strong presence

:17:02. > :17:04.on many of our councils, will target several seats in this region

:17:05. > :17:16.Our Political Correspondent Andrew Sinclair reports.

:17:17. > :17:19.Members of the UK Independence Party are on their way to Doncastdr this

:17:20. > :17:25.afternoon for their annual conference.

:17:26. > :17:26.That was obvious in Clacton last night.

:17:27. > :17:29.More than 700 members of the public came along to

:17:30. > :17:32.And nearly all of them were not party membdrs.

:17:33. > :17:35.I am concerned about immigr`tion, all these people coming in here

:17:36. > :17:38.People in Europe telling us what we can't do in our own country.

:17:39. > :17:41.You've got Cameron and all that they all stutter the question,

:17:42. > :17:47.Nigel Farage was here to calpaign in the Clacton by`election

:17:48. > :17:55.We are sick to death of being governed by this political class.

:17:56. > :17:58.Of all the parties, UKIP will be feeling most optimistic

:17:59. > :18:04.It now has more than 100 councillors in the east.

:18:05. > :18:06.UKIP says this proves it can be trusted with power

:18:07. > :18:09.and responsibility, but other parties often complain

:18:10. > :18:13.that the new councillors ard not really up to the job.

:18:14. > :18:18.They've got simplistic solutions to difficult questions.

:18:19. > :18:22.You have to understand the brief, the meat on the bones and follow

:18:23. > :18:26.these things through and understand the process and try to come up with

:18:27. > :18:33.They are constantly looking for a simple answer.

:18:34. > :18:34.But their party leader isn't worried.

:18:35. > :18:36.He says they'll gain experience over time.

:18:37. > :18:38.Most of these UKIP councillors h`ve only

:18:39. > :18:47.My advice to every UKIP councillor who was elected was don't rtn

:18:48. > :18:55.That actually applies to politicians from all parties.

:18:56. > :18:58.Back in Clacton, UKIP has also courted controversy

:18:59. > :19:02.over its decidion to drop its elected candidate, Roger Lord,

:19:03. > :19:06.in favour of Douglas Carswell when he defected from the Conservatives.

:19:07. > :19:14.Sometimes in life someone better comes along.

:19:15. > :19:17.Opponents say UKIP has vagud, inconsistent and ill thought out

:19:18. > :19:21.policies, although that does not seem to deter voters.

:19:22. > :19:23.Nigel Farage knows that as the election gets closer,

:19:24. > :19:40.You can see a full list of the candidate 's on the website for BBC

:19:41. > :19:41.Essex. Look East has been

:19:42. > :19:43.following the extraordinary progress of teenage golf sensation Charley

:19:44. > :19:46.Hull for more than a decade. Today on the eve of the

:19:47. > :19:49.Ryder Cup Charley went back to the school where that journdy began

:19:50. > :19:51.her old primary school in Who can tell me, which country is

:19:52. > :20:12.this? That is Morocco where I won my first

:20:13. > :20:18.tournament. She's a bit too old for this geography class. The sdat s,

:20:19. > :20:25.too, are smaller than she rdmembers, but Charley Hull is happy to be

:20:26. > :20:33.back. I spent my childhood hn this school. All my family used to teach

:20:34. > :20:43.here. I've got a big historx of this school, it is brilliant. It's open!

:20:44. > :20:47.Today, she opened the new extension at her old primary school. Once a

:20:48. > :20:57.shy nine`year`old, now very much used to the limelight. Can H have a

:20:58. > :21:03.`I've? We heard that when she was four, she hit a golf ball over a
