:01:28. > :01:32.were scrapped at a cost of ?180,000 of tax payers' money.

:02:12. > :02:13.that was proudly looking forward to welcoming its first pupils.
:02:14. > :02:15.But, by lunchtime, that website was off-line,
:02:16. > :02:17.replaced by a message that the project
:02:18. > :02:22.Normally on a story like this I'd stand at the location where this
:02:23. > :02:27.That though, is one of the problems with this project, it
:02:28. > :02:31.All we know is this school was going to be built
:02:32. > :02:36.somewhere within three miles of here in Luton town centre.
:02:37. > :02:38.A previous attempt to open ` girls' free school in Luton
:02:39. > :02:43.did have a proposed site at this land on Kingsway.
:02:44. > :02:49.But that project collapsed, costing taxpayers ?180,000.
:02:50. > :02:52.The Department for Education has refused to tell us how much has been
:02:53. > :02:56.spent on this latest failed project, but the local Labour MP says
:02:57. > :03:00.the government's free school model isn't what the town needs.
:03:01. > :03:03.We've got a young population, a growing population
:03:04. > :03:05.and that means we need comprehensive education.
:03:06. > :03:08.At the moment, the only typd of school we are banned from opening
:03:09. > :03:12.is one that is planned by a local authority and built by it.
:03:13. > :03:20.I think about the students that aren't going to have school places
:03:21. > :03:24.and the wasted time from civil servants going on a project
:03:25. > :03:27.which was never going to work and the government was warndd about.
:03:28. > :03:30.This is the second time it's happened and it needs to stop.
:03:31. > :03:33.In a letter sent to those involved in the project,

:03:54. > :03:56.reassured parents there are enough spaces for the town's children.
:03:57. > :03:59.We are actively trying to build new schools in the next few years.

:04:05. > :04:11.and therefore we have a number of options that we've been
:04:12. > :04:16.So I can assure them there will be a place found for you in Luton.
:04:17. > :04:20.Free schools can, in theory, be set up by anyone and they are opening
:04:21. > :04:27.The Wixams Academy in Bedford is due to open next year.

:04:37. > :04:39.working with an existing local primary school, we have a great

:04:59. > :05:11.But opening new schools to fill that need is proving to be a challenge.
