:00:13. > :00:20.This was a senseless crime for the cost of three pizzas. I hopd this

:00:21. > :00:21.cost of three pizzas. I hope this sends a strong message around people

:00:22. > :00:24.thinking about their actions. Too little too late -

:00:25. > :00:26.plans for a new free school in Luton hit the buffers after the government

:00:27. > :00:32.pulls the plug. A subtle but cloudy outlook. Join me

:00:33. > :00:39.later for the details. First tonight, a widow wept today,

:00:40. > :00:45.as two men were convicted of killing her husband in an attack

:00:46. > :00:48.over a take away. Father-of-two Ali Qasemi,

:00:49. > :00:50.whose wife Fawzia was pregn`nt with their third child,

:00:51. > :00:52.was ambushed as he delivered pizzas. Following the conviction

:00:53. > :01:00.of Joel Lawson and Mark Lintott of manslaughter, Pizza Hut pledged

:01:01. > :01:03.to review its safety procedtres It was a normal night,

:01:04. > :01:08.and normal shift. Ali Qasemi was delivering food

:01:09. > :01:13.across the city, then an order came in for three

:01:14. > :01:19.pizzas costing around ?50. Ali Qasemi was lured here to

:01:20. > :01:21.Shrewsbury Court just before 1am. Unbeknown to him, it

:01:22. > :01:26.was a false address. He was knocked to the ground

:01:27. > :01:34.with a single punch, his pizzas After the attack, the men wdnt

:01:35. > :01:42.inside and carried on partying. Joel Lawson admitted punching Ali

:01:43. > :01:46.Qasemi. Mark Lintott from Peterborotgh

:01:47. > :01:52.denied robbery and manslaughter, After the verdict, a friend

:01:53. > :01:57.spoke of the anguish It was a very devastating

:01:58. > :02:06.incident on Fawzia's life. This incident has ruined her,

:02:07. > :02:08.not only her own life He was the main bread winner,

:02:09. > :02:15.he just went to work, he was just Police said the men had

:02:16. > :02:35.been drinking for most This is a really senseless

:02:36. > :02:39.crime for the sake of And I hope this sends a strong

:02:40. > :02:43.message around people thinking about their actions and thinking

:02:44. > :02:46.through the possible consequences of what they may think

:02:47. > :02:48.is just a silly act. The two men will be sentencdd later

:02:49. > :02:56.for their crime, but left a mother without her husband and thrde

:02:57. > :02:59.children without a father. Pizza Hut have told us

:03:00. > :03:03.that since the attack, They've got a new way of verifying

:03:04. > :03:09.orders and have reviewed drhver training to try and stop anything

:03:10. > :03:20.like this from ever happening again. Next - it was due to open

:03:21. > :03:22.it's doors in September, offering parents a choice

:03:23. > :03:24.and driving up standards. But tonight plans for

:03:25. > :03:27.St Anne's High, a new free school The Department for Education has

:03:28. > :03:34.withdrawn its support, saying not enough progress

:03:35. > :03:37.had been made. But with the town in desper`te need

:03:38. > :03:40.of more school places, what next? Here's our political

:03:41. > :03:46.reporter Tom Barton. 35 free schools are now open in our

:03:47. > :03:50.part of the region and another 21 are in the pipeline,

:03:51. > :03:54.including the Chiltern Academy, planned to be open

:03:55. > :03:58.on this site in 2018. But, another free school in Luton

:03:59. > :04:01.has hit the buffers, raising questions `bout

:04:02. > :04:07.this flagship government policy. This morning, St Anne's High School

:04:08. > :04:09.for Girls had a website that was proudly looking forward

:04:10. > :04:12.to welcoming its first pupils. But, by lunchtime, that

:04:13. > :04:15.website was off-line, replaced by a message

:04:16. > :04:18.that the project Normally on a story like thhs I d

:04:19. > :04:26.stand at the location where this That though, is one of the problems

:04:27. > :04:30.with this project, they All we know is this school

:04:31. > :04:36.was going to be built somewhere within three miles

:04:37. > :04:40.of here in Luton town centre. A previous attempt to open a girls'

:04:41. > :04:42.free school in Luton did have a proposed site at this

:04:43. > :04:46.land on Kingsway. But that project collapsed,

:04:47. > :04:50.costing taxpayers ?180,000. The Department for Education has

:04:51. > :04:54.refused to tell us how much has been spent on this latest failed project,

:04:55. > :04:57.but the local Labour MP says the government's free school model

:04:58. > :05:03.isn't what the town needs. We've got a young population,

:05:04. > :05:07.a growing population and that means we need

:05:08. > :05:09.comprehensive education. At the moment, the only typd

:05:10. > :05:12.of school we are banned from opening is one that is planned by the local

:05:13. > :05:15.authority and built by it. I think about the students that

:05:16. > :05:22.aren't going to have school places and the wasted time from civil

:05:23. > :05:25.servants going on a project which was never going to work

:05:26. > :05:27.and the government was warndd about. This is the second time it's

:05:28. > :05:30.happened and it needs to stop. In a letter sent to those

:05:31. > :05:35.involved in the project, Luton council didn't support

:05:36. > :05:56.the proposed school and today reassured parents there are enough

:05:57. > :06:00.spaces for the town's children. We are actively trying to btild

:06:01. > :06:03.new schools in the next few years. We have to because we have ` growing

:06:04. > :06:06.population in Luton, and therefore we have got a number

:06:07. > :06:15.of options that we've been So I can assure them there will be

:06:16. > :06:20.a place found for you in Luton. Free schools can, in theory, be set

:06:21. > :06:24.up by anyone and they are opening The Wixams Academy in Bedford

:06:25. > :06:31.is due to open next year. Their head says the key to success

:06:32. > :06:33.is working We've been working with

:06:34. > :06:38.the community for over a ye`r now, working with an existing local

:06:39. > :06:41.primary school, we have a great We were here on Saturday

:06:42. > :06:48.at a community event and it's a very ambitious,

:06:49. > :06:53.very vibrant community. They are very, very keen

:06:54. > :07:00.and very welcoming of us. There's no doubt that Luton

:07:01. > :07:02.will need more school places But opening new schools to fill that

:07:03. > :07:08.need is proving to be a challenge. The fact that two

:07:09. > :07:11.planned free schools have been scrapped in Luton does

:07:12. > :07:14.suggest education officials are looking closely at

:07:15. > :07:17.what's going on here. That said, the council supports

:07:18. > :07:20.the school that's going to be built on this site

:07:21. > :07:23.and there is every indication this Our reporter Mousumi Bakshi is here,

:07:24. > :07:47.just explain to us briefly They were part of a series of

:07:48. > :07:50.Government in 2010. You will Government in 2010. You will

:07:51. > :07:52.remember the big society slogan from a few years ago? It was designed

:07:53. > :07:52.remember the big society slogan from a few years ago? It was deshgned to

:07:53. > :07:59.a few years ago? It was designed to encourage more independence for

:08:00. > :08:05.people, including parents who want to shape their children's education

:08:06. > :08:09.future. They are free of local authority control so they c`n set

:08:10. > :08:13.their own term times, said teacher pay and ignore the national

:08:14. > :08:19.curriculum. So it was a coalition policy going for six years, is the

:08:20. > :08:23.will still behind it in Westminster? People in favour of April .2 the

:08:24. > :08:28.numbers of success and need the good will to continue there are currently

:08:29. > :08:31.400 up and running. David Cameron said there would be another 500 by

:08:32. > :08:36.20 20. But now there is a ndw name 20 20. But now there is a new name

:08:37. > :08:40.at the top and Theresa May will want to shape her own education policy.

:08:41. > :08:44.There was a big announcement on education? Yes, the government has

:08:45. > :08:48.education? Yes, the governmdnt has dropped its plans to convert all

:08:49. > :08:54.schools into academies, announcement made in the Queen's Speech. All

:08:55. > :08:59.schools would have been publicly funded, independent schools free

:09:00. > :09:03.from local authority control. It was the element of compulsion that

:09:04. > :09:04.prompted howls of protest from up and down the country. Thank you very

:09:05. > :09:07.much. Cambridge City Council has announced

:09:08. > :09:09.it's to double the number The council had agreed to t`ke 0

:09:10. > :09:13.refugees as part of a government scheme to help people

:09:14. > :09:15.from war-torn countries. They now say they will take 100

:09:16. > :09:17.directly from camps close Last night we told you Addenbrooke's

:09:18. > :09:21.Hospital in Cambridge had been It's meant patients who aren't

:09:22. > :09:25.critical being sent away and some non urgent

:09:26. > :09:26.operations being cancelled. Well today that pressure

:09:27. > :09:28.has started to ease, Peterborough City Hospital

:09:29. > :09:35.remains on black alert. Hundreds of people turned ott

:09:36. > :09:37.tonight for a concert The founding member of Pink Floyd

:09:38. > :09:47.left the band after just three years, sliding into mental illness

:09:48. > :09:49.after a battle with drugs. He then moved to Cambridge

:09:50. > :09:52.and withdrew from public life. Stars including Blur's Grah`m Coxon

:09:53. > :09:55.were at tonight's event, which also saw the unveiling

:09:56. > :09:58.of a new art installation. The piece was commissioned

:09:59. > :10:01.for what would have been That's all from me, I'll leave

:10:02. > :10:06.you with the weather from Alex. Quite cloudy across the reghon

:10:07. > :10:09.at the moment so temperatures perhaps not dropping as low

:10:10. > :10:11.as they could. The chance of some mist and fog

:10:12. > :10:14.patches developing as we go Temperatures into single figures

:10:15. > :10:18.just about, so a low of around eight or 9 degrees for most parts

:10:19. > :10:21.of the region by first So, it may just be a bit of a misty,

:10:22. > :10:25.cloudy start to the day. Essentially a settled forecast

:10:26. > :10:27.with high-pressure controllhng things, but that weather front close

:10:28. > :10:29.by could mean quite And possibly across northern

:10:30. > :10:33.counties, a few spots of light rain or drizzle out of the thickest

:10:34. > :10:35.of the cloud. So where it remains cloudy,

:10:36. > :10:38.it will still be quite mild with temperatures around

:10:39. > :10:40.13 or 14 degrees. But if we get any brightness

:10:41. > :10:45.or sunshine those temperatures But it looks as though that will be

:10:46. > :10:51.in short supply The national weather's coming up,

:10:52. > :10:54.but here's the outlook. It's a rather cloudy

:10:55. > :10:56.outlook for the weekend, The chance of some brighter

:10:57. > :11:05.spells developing later. My colleague Helen Willetts has with

:11:06. > :11:06.the national
