:00:07. > :00:09.Hello and welcome to Look East, with Susie and me.

:00:10. > :00:11.In the news tonight, we have got the latest

:00:12. > :00:13.on the house fire in Braintree which killed a mother

:00:14. > :00:27.Watch can never escape how much we will miss you and how much fun we

:00:28. > :00:28.had. Stay with us for live travel news

:00:29. > :00:31.on the great Christmas getaway. We are getting into

:00:32. > :00:33.the festive spirit with a special feature on the making

:00:34. > :00:35.of Ethel and Ernest, the latest classic animation

:00:36. > :00:37.from Raymond Briggs. And we are joined in the studio by

:00:38. > :00:52.this year's panto star, Wayne Sleep. Police and fire investigators have

:00:53. > :00:56.spent a second day at the scene of a fatal house fire

:00:57. > :00:58.in Braintree in Essex. There is still no official

:00:59. > :01:00.explanation for the blaze which killed a mother

:01:01. > :01:02.and her daughter. All day, people have

:01:03. > :01:04.been leaving flowers The deaths of Alina Kordashevshka

:01:05. > :01:08.and her daughter Emilia have had A special mass in the local Catholic

:01:09. > :01:13.church last night was packed out. We can get the latest now from our

:01:14. > :01:50.Essex reporter Gareth George. And still they came as a community

:01:51. > :01:56.paid its respects. The family should be photos of the friends together.

:01:57. > :02:03.Choking back tears, she read out the message on her car. Words cannot

:02:04. > :02:12.describe how much I miss you. They cannot escape the fund teams we

:02:13. > :02:17.heard. Always stay forever young. He went to the same school, so we saw

:02:18. > :02:29.them growing up together. They had become very close friends. The last

:02:30. > :02:37.time she spoke to her was on Monday. What do you think of the response?

:02:38. > :02:46.It shows as the tape of community we have. They are very much part of the

:02:47. > :02:50.community. There is not much more I can say really. The evidence is

:02:51. > :02:55.there. The house is very badly damaged and that will make the fire

:02:56. > :02:59.investigation very difficult. Anything which indicated how it

:03:00. > :03:09.started me have been destroyed. Lastly, a mass was said said for the

:03:10. > :03:17.couple. A fundraising page setup for the family has raised ?20,000. And

:03:18. > :03:18.back at the house, many very moved by this tragedy just before

:03:19. > :03:22.Christmas. Thieves have carried out another

:03:23. > :03:25.raid on a church roof in Norfolk. The raiders stripped lead

:03:26. > :03:27.from the roof of the village church in Toft Monks, near Beccles.

:03:28. > :03:30.Dozens of churches across Norfolk and Suffolk have been hit

:03:31. > :03:44.in the past 18 months. Stripped beer under the cover of

:03:45. > :03:52.night, the church in Toft Monks the latest to be targeted by thieves. It

:03:53. > :04:00.is devastating that they have done this to us. We do not know how much

:04:01. > :04:05.it will cost. There's a limit know how much we are allowed to in

:04:06. > :04:11.insurance for stuff which is stolen from. It will probably be way beyond

:04:12. > :04:15.the means that we can afford. The church is determined that a service

:04:16. > :04:22.tomorrow evening will still go ahead. This is the third time in

:04:23. > :04:25.recent years it has been targeted. This was security marked. It links

:04:26. > :04:31.directly to this building but the police have told the judge the

:04:32. > :04:40.chances are it will be taken abroad and Saul Dornier. Repair work has

:04:41. > :04:44.just been completed after a previous read. It is so selfish when people

:04:45. > :04:49.would come and do this. Especially after spending so much money

:04:50. > :04:52.repealing the porch. It took us so many years just to raise enough

:04:53. > :04:58.money for that and know we have got to find more money to do the roof,

:04:59. > :05:02.as well. Work to make the church weatherproof is no under way.

:05:03. > :05:03.Repairs could take tens of thousands of pounds, money the congregation

:05:04. > :05:07.simply does not have. The great Christmas getaway

:05:08. > :05:09.is in full swing this In a moment, what is

:05:10. > :05:12.happening at the airport, but first, the trains.

:05:13. > :05:29.Robby West is in Colchester. Unlike now, it has been very busy

:05:30. > :05:33.today. A lot of people getting themselves by call for Christmas.

:05:34. > :05:38.There has been a relatively normal service today, but that will not be

:05:39. > :05:42.the case tomorrow. A lot of the line will be closed tomorrow for planned

:05:43. > :05:52.engineering works. You have been dressing very pessimistic for us.

:05:53. > :05:56.Someone has too. A five-hour drive for Jake and his girlfriend lies

:05:57. > :06:04.ahead. She managed to avoid the disruption. I was able to get on the

:06:05. > :06:08.one o'clock. I am obligated to some weird bit warmer. For the next ten

:06:09. > :06:16.days, the lane effectively closes down as the railway company carries

:06:17. > :06:21.out repair work. Our holiday period is a good team to close it down. The

:06:22. > :06:26.work is absolutely necessary. We need to get the real week up to the

:06:27. > :06:37.standard. We have to accept that work needs to be done and that

:06:38. > :06:41.Christmas is the best time to do it, too minimise the disruption. But

:06:42. > :06:51.people using trains today were angry about dreams not running over

:06:52. > :06:57.Christmas. It is anaemia. It has meant that the family cannot

:06:58. > :07:01.visitors over Christmas. We will have to stay a few days and come

:07:02. > :07:07.back next Friday. Causing a lot of problems. A lot of problems. Today,

:07:08. > :07:11.it was gridlocked as people took the last chance to use the train before

:07:12. > :07:20.the lane effectively closes for ten days. I am joined by Juliet, the

:07:21. > :07:24.area manager for the railway company. What have passengers to

:07:25. > :07:30.expect next year? It will be a good year. It will be the first full year

:07:31. > :07:37.of the new franchise. We will be spending more than ?5 million on

:07:38. > :07:41.improving the current dreams. We will improve the reliability. They

:07:42. > :07:49.are already very reliable, but we will improve even more. We are going

:07:50. > :07:54.to be bringing an automatic daily and P. And we will generally be

:07:55. > :07:59.looking to make journeys better and more comfortable for our passengers,

:08:00. > :08:03.bringing in more ticket machines in stations and doing whatever we can

:08:04. > :08:07.to improve things for the passengers. Thank you. If you're

:08:08. > :08:13.travelling over the Christmas period, if you want to know all the

:08:14. > :08:14.latest travel news, check the BBC local website and BBC local radio

:08:15. > :08:16.station. Today was the busiest day

:08:17. > :08:18.of the holiday so far at Stansted Airport.

:08:19. > :08:20.Leigh Milner was there. Well, today more than 40,000

:08:21. > :08:22.passengers walked through those gates, making it the busiest

:08:23. > :08:24.departure day before Christmas. But if you think

:08:25. > :08:26.that is busy, in just under a week's time, double

:08:27. > :08:40.the number of passengers will be Both Christmas and New Year on a

:08:41. > :08:47.weekend, holiday makers are making the most of it. We are going to make

:08:48. > :08:55.your car. We are going to go for Christmas and New Year. My

:08:56. > :09:03.grandparents and already there. We want to leave their soul behind and

:09:04. > :09:14.go off skiing, but there is no snow. We like the hot weather. We are

:09:15. > :09:20.going on the Spanish beaches. It guesses away from the grand

:09:21. > :09:23.children! If you are running late for a flake, it will take you eight

:09:24. > :09:27.minutes to get through security. If you do not follow the rules, it

:09:28. > :09:31.could take you up to five times as wrong. Especially if you have extra

:09:32. > :09:38.luggage. Snow globes are really popular,

:09:39. > :09:41.they are liquid, so it is the same with all other liquids -

:09:42. > :09:43.stick them in the hold luggage, just to

:09:44. > :09:45.be on the safe side. We do not allow crackers through,

:09:46. > :09:56.so make of they they're put into Inmates have been a decade since the

:09:57. > :10:02.new rules were introduced, but it seems a few of you must need an

:10:03. > :10:08.update. If it is over 100 millilitres, you have to dump that

:10:09. > :10:14.will quit. Otherwise, let it be seen by putting it into this plastic bag.

:10:15. > :10:16.The police are searching for the driver of a van

:10:17. > :10:18.which crashed into the central reservation of the A14

:10:19. > :10:22.They had been chasing the van, which then headed

:10:23. > :10:26.After crashing to avoid two lorries, the driver escaped on foot.

:10:27. > :10:32.The police helicopter has been used in the search.

:10:33. > :10:34.You are watching Look East from the BBC.

:10:35. > :10:36.Stay with us for panto villain Wayne Sleep.

:10:37. > :10:38.We have got your Christmas weather forecast

:10:39. > :10:40.and we meet the director behind the latest classic

:10:41. > :10:51.The Church has today urged everyone to do what they can to help

:10:52. > :10:55.The Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich has recently been

:10:56. > :10:57.volunteering in winter shelters and has seen first-hand the scale

:10:58. > :11:01.And it's not just the food banks that have been busy.

:11:02. > :11:04.Look East has reported recently on concern at the number of homeless

:11:05. > :11:12.This is from our Chief Reporter, Kim Riley.

:11:13. > :11:26.The community project Rumsey foodbank which has been running for

:11:27. > :11:30.eight years. Heather, who had six children and lost her partner of six

:11:31. > :11:37.months ago, was today presented with a turkey for the family Christmas.

:11:38. > :11:51.Have the family been struggling for food? It has been a struggle. I got

:11:52. > :11:57.myself into debt. But they come here on the help me out here. We are in a

:11:58. > :12:02.very busy centre. We do not just to food, Brett give advice on debt and

:12:03. > :12:06.other things like that. People are very generous at Christmas and we

:12:07. > :12:11.are very grateful for what we have been given. But we are a fitting

:12:12. > :12:16.people throughout the year. In Great Yarmouth, it is a worry that some of

:12:17. > :12:20.the people in the town are going shirtless Christmas because of

:12:21. > :12:33.problems with the new universal credit system being under change. We

:12:34. > :12:35.have good people who have been waiting since October. We still

:12:36. > :12:41.don't know if they going to get money. A number of rough sleepers in

:12:42. > :12:50.the town has risen steeply in the past year and the Bishop was on BBC

:12:51. > :12:54.radio Suffolk and helped out at the shelter run by the churches in

:12:55. > :13:02.Ipswich. It was interesting listening to the guests. To heal the

:13:03. > :13:07.sequence of events which they all fall into which had led to them

:13:08. > :13:11.being homeless -- relationship break-up, loss of a job, thrown out

:13:12. > :13:20.of the house, no income. And suddenly finding themselves without

:13:21. > :13:23.the house. Another food bank in Cambridgeshire has distributed a

:13:24. > :13:28.record four times of Christmas hampers this year, from a proof of

:13:29. > :13:32.the growing number of patents struggling this Christmas.

:13:33. > :13:35.Let's take a moment to talk sport, with a couple of winners.

:13:36. > :13:37.Joining us from Colchester is British Olympic sailing champion

:13:38. > :13:40.And with us in the studio is Alfie Hewett,

:13:41. > :13:42.the wheelchair tennis player, who won at Wimbledon

:13:43. > :13:56.Congratulations on a fantastic year. Can you do things at Christmas that

:13:57. > :14:08.you could not do in previous years because you have retired? I do not

:14:09. > :14:13.know if I will have to restrain from anything this year. It should be

:14:14. > :14:22.fun. What was your highlight? For me, both were two iconic events.

:14:23. > :14:36.Wimbledon and the Olympics. They were both absolutely amazing. They

:14:37. > :14:43.were both amazing. To get two silver medals at the Olympics was very

:14:44. > :14:50.special. It must be magic for you this year at the Olympics? It was

:14:51. > :14:53.absolutely brilliant. A gold medal has been the childhood dream and it

:14:54. > :14:58.has been a long-time training and racing to finally get it done. It

:14:59. > :15:05.was amazing. The lovely thing is that we got to meet your family and

:15:06. > :15:14.your family. We were talking to them from anti-banisters from gnome. --

:15:15. > :15:20.anti-banisters front room. Having that family support must be amusing

:15:21. > :15:29.and very important? The support we get from family and friends is

:15:30. > :15:35.all-important. I cannot thank them enough for being the and supporting

:15:36. > :15:39.me. Obviously, for both my parents. The actually went to the Olympic

:15:40. > :15:45.Games and did she ever experience with was amazing. I think we all

:15:46. > :15:50.thought she was going to win the gold medal, but you are officially

:15:51. > :15:58.just ranked 13th in the world. You did not expect to get a medal? No, I

:15:59. > :16:03.did not really think so. I thought the Meadows Republic go to the first

:16:04. > :16:09.few ranked players in the world. I think it was the first time someone

:16:10. > :16:15.out the top six and one a medal before. I am incredibly proud of

:16:16. > :16:20.what a dead. And you chose to retire at the top. Are you enjoying your

:16:21. > :16:27.retirement? I know you are very busy. Or do you miss the competitive

:16:28. > :16:45.edge? I am definitely missing out. It is a strange time. Then, having

:16:46. > :16:56.to look at what is next. Do you go out on the water over Christmas? I

:16:57. > :17:00.do not think so. I will go down to the Boxing Day swim at the beach,

:17:01. > :17:05.but I am going to just watch all these crazy people raising money for

:17:06. > :17:09.the lifeboat, but I am not going in! Thank you both so much for being

:17:10. > :17:11.with others and have a very enjoyable Christmas.

:17:12. > :17:14.One of the big television moments of the Christmas schedules is likely

:17:15. > :17:16.to be a film animation called Ethel and Ernest.

:17:17. > :17:18.It is a story based on the book by Raymond Briggs,

:17:19. > :17:22.are actually based on Raymond Briggs' parents.

:17:23. > :17:24.The film was directed by Roger Mainwood,

:17:25. > :17:36.Ethel And Ernest is the story of Raymond Briggs' own parents.

:17:37. > :17:38.Originally a graphic novel, it has been brought to the screen

:17:39. > :17:50.His studio, at home in Wivenhoe, is in the spare room.

:17:51. > :17:52.Roger was one of the animators on the Snowman in 1982.

:17:53. > :17:58.Back then, it was paper and pencil, today, it's a computer.

:17:59. > :17:59.As director, Roger likens his role to that

:18:00. > :18:08.In this case, a rather big orchestra.

:18:09. > :18:11.For the animation process itself we have over 100 people and that

:18:12. > :18:13.includes the animators, their assistants, but also

:18:14. > :18:15.the clean-up people who put the final line to the drawing.

:18:16. > :18:18.We've also got background artists, all the people who do the ink

:18:19. > :18:25.The end credits go on for a long time.

:18:26. > :18:29.The film stars Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn.

:18:30. > :18:42.Well, Ethel, how about coming to the pictures with me?

:18:43. > :18:44.When their voices came over I just felt my mum

:18:45. > :18:49.And I spent the whole two days of recording in tears.

:18:50. > :18:59.I'm absolutely over the moon with it.

:19:00. > :19:08.We start with the storyboard and then removed to the rough animation

:19:09. > :19:20.stage. This is really final link which appears on the screen is put

:19:21. > :19:24.on. At the end of it, we end up with that lovely lake which is fairly

:19:25. > :19:32.unique to his work. It was such an important thing to get right. We

:19:33. > :19:37.could not mess up on this. Not a chance.

:19:38. > :19:39.Roger Mainwood and his team have done a fine job,

:19:40. > :19:42.and Ethel And Ernest looks set to be a highlight of the Christmas

:19:43. > :19:49.We have already met two big winners from the world of sport.

:19:50. > :19:51.Now, let's turn our attention to dance.

:19:52. > :19:53.Wayne Sleep's career started in the '60s,

:19:54. > :19:57.Since then, he has done just about everything on the stage.

:19:58. > :19:59.This Christmas, Wayne is leading the cast in Jack

:20:00. > :20:01.and the Beanstalk at the Theatre Royal in Norwich.

:20:02. > :20:18.It is fantastic. I can really frighten the children! Normally, I

:20:19. > :20:24.am the Jester or buttons and I am keeping everyone happy and jolly.

:20:25. > :20:31.But I need just as much energy to be bad as to be good. And dancing is

:20:32. > :20:41.still very important to you? Yes, tap dancing. Tap dancing, you can do

:20:42. > :20:50.will have when you are a bit older because it is just from the ankle

:20:51. > :20:55.don't watch. But you have returned to pantomime after a few years. Do

:20:56. > :21:03.you really enjoy it? Yes. I feel like a duck out of what if I do not

:21:04. > :21:08.do pantomime at Christmas. I did my first one year out they had done the

:21:09. > :21:16.London Palladium in 1976. My first official one was in Norwich. That

:21:17. > :21:22.was back in the 70s. We have been hearing about the trouble people are

:21:23. > :21:28.having with foodbank. When you see something like that, what is your

:21:29. > :21:32.reaction? Sorrow. We need people to help each other over the Christmas

:21:33. > :21:38.period. I have just done the voluntary service, where we send

:21:39. > :21:46.packages to older people's houses. And we are knocking on the houses of

:21:47. > :21:48.people who are lonely. If it is important, but loneliness, having no

:21:49. > :21:54.one to talk to over Christmas, that can be desperate. For all you know,

:21:55. > :22:03.that ten minutes could make someone's day. Dancing is having a

:22:04. > :22:08.renaissance in general. All pages are getting involved. I think you

:22:09. > :22:19.would see that you could dance at any age? Very much so. The children

:22:20. > :22:27.from all the local schools come. I want children from schools who have

:22:28. > :22:37.no introduction to dance previously too, they will give a a free class

:22:38. > :22:45.on it. And would you like to be a judge on Strictly? There's a

:22:46. > :22:51.vacancy. I would love to be on it. Do you still keep a very fit? I

:22:52. > :22:57.stretch every day. What is about dance that you love so much that you

:22:58. > :23:04.think other people love? As soon as the music starts, it lifts your

:23:05. > :23:11.spirits. Sometimes, I think, I cannot get through to those -- shows

:23:12. > :23:16.today. But all of a sudden, you get a bit of a tingle. It gives you up

:23:17. > :23:19.and get going. You can give a pleasure back to the audience, they

:23:20. > :23:26.can receive it and give it back to you. In pantomime, you are only as

:23:27. > :23:32.good as your audience and if they do not move me, then in this instance,

:23:33. > :23:41.I have actually not done a good job! Wonderful.

:23:42. > :23:56.I think we could possibly be looking at near-record temperatures over

:23:57. > :24:05.Christmas. At Stormy weather making the headlines will to the north of

:24:06. > :24:13.us. Much more calm in our part of the country. Every lean cleaving

:24:14. > :24:16.through the region at the moment. Probably around until eight o'clock.

:24:17. > :24:27.Then it will dry out across the entire region. The wind easing down.

:24:28. > :24:31.Otherwise, we are looking up moderate south westerly wind.

:24:32. > :24:40.Overnight temperatures 3-4 C. Maybe rather cool first thing in the

:24:41. > :24:50.morning. Still a bit of a blustery day tomorrow but not rain expected.

:24:51. > :24:59.High temperatures of 8-9 C. Overnight tomorrow night, the cloud

:25:00. > :25:09.increasing. A bit blustery during the course of the night. Overnight

:25:10. > :25:16.temperatures 9-10 C. Father Christmas we need to rear a T-shirt!

:25:17. > :25:21.Temperatures well above really would normally be for this time of day.

:25:22. > :25:31.Mostly dry conditions on Christmas tree, but the odd piece of drizzle

:25:32. > :25:43.possible. Possible high temperatures of 13-14 C. Temperatures will go

:25:44. > :25:56.back more to average into next week. 5 degrees cooler on Boxing Day. And

:25:57. > :26:04.a hard frost possible by Tuesday. Thank you very much. We will

:26:05. > :26:06.integrate with a treat. This is from Norwich Cathedral choir. Thank you

:26:07. > :26:08.from others have very good Christmas.
