:00:00. > :00:00.Hello and welcome to the Look East late news.
:00:00. > :00:11.the families of the missing who never give up hope.
:00:12. > :00:14.A dramatic twist in the battle for North Norfolk -
:00:15. > :00:17.the Green Party says it won't field a candidate
:00:18. > :00:24.in order to help the Lib Dem Norman Lamb.
:00:25. > :00:28.And I will be here with the latest on the weather into the weekend.
:00:29. > :00:32.Join me later. First tonight, the hidden anguish
:00:33. > :00:37.of families who've had a loved one Thousands of people disappear
:00:38. > :00:42.across the region and while most are found, Look East has discovered
:00:43. > :00:48.there are 313 cases where the missing person
:00:49. > :00:50.has not been traced. Some hit the headlines,
:00:51. > :00:53.like the search for the airman Corrie McKeague,
:00:54. > :00:56.but many more don't. Musician Anthony Stammers was 27
:00:57. > :01:00.when he left the family home Today, his parents Rob and Julie
:01:01. > :01:06.told us they'll never give up It has had a horrendous
:01:07. > :01:12.effect on us all. There are a few incidents
:01:13. > :01:17.where I have looked at people The problem is you want it
:01:18. > :01:28.to be him, you want these people to be him and you have got
:01:29. > :01:31.to rationalise it and I often say to somebody,
:01:32. > :01:37."I thought you were my son, The impact you were talking about,
:01:38. > :01:47.you cannot imagine how it When he left the house,
:01:48. > :01:53.he had every intention of going He had suffered from some
:01:54. > :02:01.depression but we felt I often shout, "Hello,
:02:02. > :02:09.Anthony, I'm home." It is a habit just in the hope
:02:10. > :02:19.that he will reply, "Hello, Mum." You never stop searching,
:02:20. > :02:22.you never give up hope that Even now we sit down regularly
:02:23. > :02:29.and plan the next thing. We have been to North Wales,
:02:30. > :02:36.you go into a church, We rarely go out without a leaflet
:02:37. > :02:46.or two in case we bump into people. Anthony, we love you so very much
:02:47. > :02:52.and miss you so very much, We just love you and want you back
:02:53. > :02:59.in our lives and hope And just to make contact and let us
:03:00. > :03:12.know you are safe and well. Rob and Julie Stammers,
:03:13. > :03:15.talking to Kevin Burch If you want help or advice you can
:03:16. > :03:24.go to missingpeople.org.uk Well, Steve Gaskin is a former
:03:25. > :03:27.detective chief inspector with the Metropolitan Police and has
:03:28. > :03:30.worked on numerous I asked him how easy
:03:31. > :03:36.it was for someone to go missing. Last year, over 300,000 people
:03:37. > :03:41.went missing in England, Scotland and Wales and that has been
:03:42. > :03:45.measured by the charity Two thirds of those people actually
:03:46. > :03:51.go missing because they want to, Often these people are suffering
:03:52. > :03:57.from some form of mental illness or mental disorder,
:03:58. > :04:00.or for financial reasons, they want to go missing,
:04:01. > :04:05.but that leaves a third of people that are missing and that is a huge
:04:06. > :04:09.problem these days, especially with cuts in public service
:04:10. > :04:12.for the police force. How, as a detective,
:04:13. > :04:17.do you decide which cases of missing A lot of it is to do
:04:18. > :04:24.with supervision, making sure that when somebody goes missing
:04:25. > :04:28.that those leads are followed The Police Service in general
:04:29. > :04:34.are very, very good at doing that. Say, for instance, the first person
:04:35. > :04:38.that reports a missing person, a police officer, often
:04:39. > :04:41.they will spend hours, days and nights personally trying
:04:42. > :04:45.to find these people, but the hardest thing
:04:46. > :04:48.is if you can't find them, Oddly, in some ways,
:04:49. > :04:55.it's better to have a murder enquiry because at least you've got a body
:04:56. > :04:58.and you know what has gone on. It is really very
:04:59. > :05:02.difficult to investigate. And is there a point
:05:03. > :05:05.when you are investigating, say a missing person's case,
:05:06. > :05:10.where the chances of finding that I mean, is it after
:05:11. > :05:16.a certain amount of time? All criminal investigations,
:05:17. > :05:21.including a missing persons, are to do with fresh evidence
:05:22. > :05:25.and hot leads and once those leads have been exhausted
:05:26. > :05:28.and the trail goes cold, it is very difficult
:05:29. > :05:31.to know when to stop. The whole experience
:05:32. > :05:34.is very emotional. It's very emotional for the person
:05:35. > :05:37.that has gone missing, it's very emotional for parents,
:05:38. > :05:41.friends, particularly if it's a young person,
:05:42. > :05:43.and it's very frustrating and emotional for the police
:05:44. > :05:46.that are investigating. In the general election campaign
:05:47. > :05:56.there's been another dramatic twist Tonight, the Green Party said it
:05:57. > :06:00.wouldn't field a candidate in order to help the Liberal Democrat health
:06:01. > :06:04.spokesman Norman Lamb. Mr Lamb, who held the seat
:06:05. > :06:07.with a majority of 4,000, is under pressure after Ukip -
:06:08. > :06:12.which polled 8,000 votes last time - told its supporters to vote
:06:13. > :06:17.Conservative to try to unseat him. The Greens came fouth
:06:18. > :06:22.in 2015 with 1,400 votes. They say that won't endorse Mr Lamb,
:06:23. > :06:26.but they are encouraging their supporters to vote for him
:06:27. > :06:29.to try and keep out With nominations now closed,
:06:30. > :06:34.it means that the battle in North Norfolk will be
:06:35. > :06:37.between Mr Lamb, the Conservative James Wild
:06:38. > :06:41.and Labour's Stephen Burke. Earlier I spoke to the Green Party's
:06:42. > :06:45.regional organiser Martin Schmierer and asked him if it was desperate
:06:46. > :06:50.times, desperate measures. Well, it's a case certainly
:06:51. > :06:53.of politics being in flux. It's a case where the Green party
:06:54. > :06:57.has to look at its resources, it has to look at the constituencies
:06:58. > :07:01.in which it is fighting. It has to think about where it can
:07:02. > :07:04.best make an impact. We are trying our best to make sure
:07:05. > :07:08.that we have got the very best kind of Parliament on June 9th,
:07:09. > :07:11.making sure that environmental protection and action on climate
:07:12. > :07:15.change is not forgotten. This is going to be the shortest
:07:16. > :07:18.ballot paper in history, Yes, but it's important
:07:19. > :07:23.that the result is right Britain needs an opposition
:07:24. > :07:26.to the Conservatives. We cannot have a massive
:07:27. > :07:30.landslide to the Tories. We need to have other
:07:31. > :07:32.voices in there. You are denying your
:07:33. > :07:35.supporters, Green supporters, Well, it's up to the local party
:07:36. > :07:42.to make that decision. They decided not
:07:43. > :07:45.to stand a candidate. What do the Greens get
:07:46. > :07:47.back from the Lib Dems? This isn't some sort
:07:48. > :07:53.of cloak and dagger, What we get out of it is
:07:54. > :08:00.the assurance, hopefully, that we will get some kind
:08:01. > :08:02.of proportional representation if we see that large
:08:03. > :08:07.number of MPs elected. The last election we got
:08:08. > :08:10.a million votes and that We really need to change
:08:11. > :08:15.the voting system. That is what is fundamentally
:08:16. > :08:17.unfair, that is what is fundamentally undemocratic
:08:18. > :08:19.and that is what the voters, whether that be across Norfolk
:08:20. > :08:22.or whether that be across Britain, And you, as a member
:08:23. > :08:27.of the Green Party, will be very happy to see Norman Lamb
:08:28. > :08:32.retain his seat June 9th? I mean, our decision
:08:33. > :08:34.there was not an endorsement of Norman Lamb per se,
:08:35. > :08:37.it was not an endorsement What this was was a direct
:08:38. > :08:41.condemnation and criticism of this hardline Tory
:08:42. > :08:45.and Ukip almost alliance. That is something that we in
:08:46. > :08:48.the Green Party cannot stomach. Labour will also be standing
:08:49. > :08:55.in North Norfolk and for a full list of candidates in that
:08:56. > :08:57.seat and all the others, Finally tonight, imagine
:08:58. > :09:06.watching this whilst It's called a VR Playground
:09:07. > :09:11.and there are eight of them dotted around Norwich as part
:09:12. > :09:15.of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival Among the highlights is a seven-hour
:09:16. > :09:18.long theatre performance this weekend called Summer,
:09:19. > :09:24.Autumn, Winter, Spring. We are trying to make something
:09:25. > :09:26.where the audience can really imagine themselves in and in fact,
:09:27. > :09:29.in Autumn, they are invited onto the stage to be part of Autumn,
:09:30. > :09:32.so it's about not presenting a performer as a kind of hero,
:09:33. > :09:36.if you like, not a heroic figure, but as people like us and that
:09:37. > :09:38.raises questions about how we function in the world,
:09:39. > :09:44.how we are with each other. And the festival runs
:09:45. > :09:46.until the 28th May. Coming up now the weather
:09:47. > :10:02.with Alex, but from the rest Some changes are underway with the
:10:03. > :10:06.weather over the next 24 hours or so. More cloud coming from the south
:10:07. > :10:13.and that could bring outbreaks of rain. It will stay very mild
:10:14. > :10:17.compared with last night, temperatures of eight Celsius. We
:10:18. > :10:22.start tomorrow with this area of low pressure moving slowly to the north.
:10:23. > :10:29.We may see outbreaks of rain first thing, a bit of a cloudy start, but
:10:30. > :10:32.brighter skies and some sunshine. Some showers could be heavy,
:10:33. > :10:37.possibly thundery. Temperatures of possibly thundery. Temperatures of
:10:38. > :10:43.18 or 19 degrees with a brisk breeze. Into the afternoon, although
:10:44. > :10:49.some showers are around and the odd thundery one, they will fade away
:10:50. > :10:54.towards the end of the day. Here is the outlook: Into the weekend a
:10:55. > :11:00.slightly cooler field to things. We will see good spells of sunshine on
:11:01. > :11:02.Saturday. The chance of an isolated shower and into Sunday, some
:11:03. > :11:02.scattered We want to see the economy
:11:03. > :11:09.work for everybody, not Now the weather.
:11:10. > :11:42., yes a humid dead. We have had photographs of the
:11:43. > :11:43.Now, humid air is coming in hyped. This cloud will
