0:00:00 > 0:00:02he hopes to prove the earnings forecasts wrong.

0:00:02 > 0:00:04In Look East this lunchtime.

0:00:05 > 0:00:10Tears and cheers, as a BBC TV programme and a team

0:00:10 > 0:00:12of local volunteers transform the lives of a disabled

0:00:12 > 0:00:14man and his family.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17Hospital appointment letters appealing for donations.

0:00:17 > 0:00:22An MP brands it "unacceptable begging".

0:00:22 > 0:00:25It is chilly today but it will get even colder at the weekend.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27I'll have the full forecast later in the

0:00:27 > 0:00:27programme.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Hello.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43The lives of a disabled man and his family have been transformed,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46thanks to a BBC TV programme and a team of local

0:00:46 > 0:00:50volunteers in Mildenhall.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Simon Dobbin was left brain-damaged, after being attacked by a gang

0:00:53 > 0:00:54of football hooligans in Southend.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Since then, his wife has become his full-time carer.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00But their home wasn't fit to deal with his complex needs.

0:01:00 > 0:01:09This morning, though, that changed.

0:01:10 > 0:01:15Day ten of the Big Build and some last-minute touches, more than 100

0:01:15 > 0:01:17volunteers first gutted and transformed the small terraced house

0:01:17 > 0:01:25in London football. Nick Knowles led the way as Simon's wife and

0:01:25 > 0:01:31daughter, eyes shut, were taken through their new front door.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36We have seen the very worst of humanity, and the best of humanity

0:01:36 > 0:01:41represented with one family. It lead to injuries for some of which were

0:01:41 > 0:01:46horrific. The fact he has a life sentence himself with his injuries.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50And his wife who has become a carer rather than a wife. And his daughter

0:01:50 > 0:01:59who misses his father -- her father. Firms donated materials, builders,

0:01:59 > 0:02:01plumbers, electricians giving their labour free.

0:02:01 > 0:02:06I would do it again in a heartbeat. The field was fantastic. I am

0:02:06 > 0:02:13privileged to be a part of it. What is going on in the world today,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16and yet there are these good-hearted people.

0:02:16 > 0:02:22A great bunch of lads, good camaraderie.

0:02:22 > 0:02:28I am going to miss them. The manager had praise for them all.

0:02:28 > 0:02:33115 people a day have turned up to get Simon back into this house,

0:02:33 > 0:02:41which is amazing. They turned up for a reason. They built this house with

0:02:41 > 0:02:51love. It wasn't a normal building site, built with love and passion.

0:02:51 > 0:02:56After their first viewing of their new home, Nicole and Emily emerged

0:02:56 > 0:03:02to wild applause. The designer looking on.

0:03:02 > 0:03:09Everything is to my taste which shocked me. Everything is perfect,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13nothing will be changed. Good old Lawrence. He has done a

0:03:13 > 0:03:18cracker of a job. Really made us feel so proud that they have

0:03:18 > 0:03:22listened to our likes and dislikes and made a home of this and to what

0:03:22 > 0:03:28we wanted and put it into place. Simon couldn't be here today, he is

0:03:28 > 0:03:32in Addenbrooke's Hospital recovering from a chest infection.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36But DIY SOS and dozens of good people have ensured his home is

0:03:36 > 0:03:41somewhere he can live with dignity.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44A man from Luton's just been given a six-year sentence

0:03:44 > 0:03:47for terrorist offences.

0:03:47 > 0:03:5022-year-old Mubashir Jamil told an undercover officer he would blow

0:03:50 > 0:03:53himself up in Britain if he couldn't travel to Syria to fight

0:03:53 > 0:03:55for so-called Islamic State.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57The Metropolitan Police have released footage of his arrest.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00The court heard he had a mental illness and, as part

0:04:00 > 0:04:08of his sentence, he'll be treated in a secure psychiatric hospital.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11The administrators say they're hopeful they can find a buyer

0:04:11 > 0:04:12for the furniture chain Multiyork which went

0:04:13 > 0:04:13into administration yesterday.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15550 jobs are at risk,

0:04:15 > 0:04:17200 of those are at its factory in Thetford.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20There are 50 stores around the UK, and they will continue to trade

0:04:20 > 0:04:21until at least Christmas.

0:04:21 > 0:04:28This was the reaction of shoppers in Norwich today.

0:04:28 > 0:04:33Yes, it seems quite sad.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36All the years there's been a big company I believe at the Thetford

0:04:36 > 0:04:37factory as such.

0:04:37 > 0:04:38It seems quite sad, yes.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40It's just another thing off the high street

0:04:40 > 0:04:41going.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Disappointing, really, because, look at the places

0:04:43 > 0:04:46that are closing down.

0:04:46 > 0:04:56I've never heard of it, no.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02More details have emerged about plans to merge

0:05:02 > 0:05:03the Luton and Dunstable and Bedford Hospitals.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05A public meeting this morning was told that

0:05:05 > 0:05:07Bedford Hospital's £40 million deficit is expected

0:05:07 > 0:05:09to be written off, as part of the merger.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Staff would work as a single team across Bedfordshire, although both

0:05:12 > 0:05:13hospitals would retain their name.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15It's proposed they would merge next April.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17One of the region's leading hospitals has been criticised

0:05:17 > 0:05:18for including an appeal for charitable donations

0:05:18 > 0:05:20on its appointment letters.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Patients at the Norfolk and Norwich are being asked to donate

0:05:23 > 0:05:25in order to "provide the highest quality service".

0:05:25 > 0:05:33A local MP has described the appeal as "unacceptable".

0:05:33 > 0:05:36This is Belinda, with an appointment letter from the Norfolk and

0:05:36 > 0:05:37Norwich University Hospital.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39When she received it recently, Belinda was

0:05:39 > 0:05:42surprised to see a paragraph asking her to make a donation to the

0:05:42 > 0:05:45hospital charity.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48The appeal says, with restrictions on public

0:05:48 > 0:05:50funding, voluntary donations can make a difference in supporting

0:05:50 > 0:05:52additional medical equipment, medical research and improvements to

0:05:52 > 0:05:56medical facilities.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59I appreciate the NHS is short of funds, and I know

0:05:59 > 0:06:02that they do get a lot of

0:06:02 > 0:06:04money from fundraising, often when people have

0:06:04 > 0:06:06had their treatment.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09But I think to get a letter saying that they are

0:06:09 > 0:06:12short of money and for high-quality treatment, could you consider making

0:06:12 > 0:06:15a donation, when you haven't even been to the hospital yet, is

0:06:15 > 0:06:16totally inappropriate.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19The hospital has a Just Giving page and people have long donated to

0:06:19 > 0:06:21charity.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24Last year, the charity raised over £1 million,

0:06:24 > 0:06:26but the appeal for funds on every outpatient letter is now

0:06:26 > 0:06:29raising eyebrows.

0:06:29 > 0:06:34I think many people will be asking themselves this question.

0:06:34 > 0:06:40Today, we are putting at the bottom of patient letters

0:06:40 > 0:06:43a begging bowl, in effect, asking the charitable funds for

0:06:43 > 0:06:44basic hospital equipment and services.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46Today, it is an ask, but tomorrow I think

0:06:46 > 0:06:48some people may think it

0:06:48 > 0:06:51could be a demand, it's a slippery slope we are heading towards.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54There will be a lot of people who will be worried about this.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56What do the public think of this idea?

0:06:56 > 0:06:58We did an unscientific straw poll in Norwich

0:06:58 > 0:06:59city centre.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01I don't think that should be on an official letter.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02Why?

0:07:02 > 0:07:07Because the health service is funded through taxation.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10We shouldn't have to rely on donations for our health service.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Is it a sign of desperation, do you think?

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Yes, it is desperate times.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19If the Government isn't going to provide the money,

0:07:19 > 0:07:23they have to get it from somewhere.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26The hospital has turned downour request for an interview but, in a

0:07:26 > 0:07:28statement, a spokesperson told us, donations to the charity make a

0:07:28 > 0:07:31difference, and we are incredibly grateful for the support we receive.

0:07:31 > 0:07:41Mike Liggins, BBC Look East, Norwich.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Thousands are expected at Bury St Edmunds' Christmas Fayre

0:07:50 > 0:07:51this year, which opens today.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54It is now one of the biggest in the country, with

0:07:54 > 0:07:55over 300 trade stalls.

0:07:55 > 0:07:56The weather now.

0:07:56 > 0:07:57Here's Elizabeth Rizzini.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Good afternoon.

0:07:59 > 0:08:06A mild but rather wet and windy start to the day.

0:08:06 > 0:08:14Some squally bands of rain tracking from

0:08:14 > 0:08:16the west, behind it some clearer but cooler air.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Some sunshine for the rest of the day.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20A bit more in the way of fair weather cloud.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22For the most part, it should stay dry.

0:08:22 > 0:08:23A blustery south-westerly wind.

0:08:23 > 0:08:24Some sunshine.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26Temperatures to start the day, 12 Celsius.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28It comes down in that cooler air.

0:08:28 > 0:08:29In the afternoon, around nine or ten.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31This evening, dry and clear first thing.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33Then an area of cloud and rain will spread

0:08:33 > 0:08:39into the south.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42Into Hertfordshire and Essex, southern parts of Suffolk.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Further north of this line, we get clear skies, and if we get

0:08:46 > 0:08:47this, in the cooler air,

0:08:47 > 0:08:48a touch of frost tomorrow morning.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50A cloudy, damp start towards the south.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53A milder one as the cloud clears away.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55For everyone, plenty of sunshine emerging through the morning

0:08:55 > 0:08:56tomorrow.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58That will last again into the afternoon.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Feeling nicer tomorrow.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04The air will be cooler, but the winds will be lighter.

0:09:05 > 0:09:10Highs of only eight degrees Celsius.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12A cold feeling day tomorrow, getting colder still at the weekend,

0:09:12 > 0:09:14on Saturday, highs of six degrees.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16A chilly north-westerly wind developing.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Frost in more sheltered spots.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22That's all for now.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25But I hope you can join us for Look East this evening, on

0:09:25 > 0:09:26BBC One, at 6.30.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Until then, have a very good afternoon.
