:02:20. > :02:27.were up over 63 per cent and violent crime is up by almost three
:02:27. > :02:37.per cent. It comes a year after Chief Constable Tim Hollis had to
:02:37. > :02:38.
:02:38. > :02:42.look at every part of the force to save money. 140 posts were cut.
:02:42. > :02:46.There are a number of factors coming together and creating the
:02:46. > :02:53.perfect stance for crime to rise. The probation service has been
:02:53. > :02:57.slashed. We catch these people all the time, we pick them to the
:02:57. > :03:01.courts, but it is very rare that we can get in kept in custody for any
:03:01. > :03:06.lakes of times. It is a revolving door. Whether less officers equals
:03:06. > :03:10.more crime was not only been discussed in Hull today. We have
:03:10. > :03:14.been clear that there is no simple relationship. That view that we
:03:14. > :03:19.take is backed up by the Home Affairs Select Committee. We are

:03:35. > :03:38.on cash-strapped individuals turning to crime. But when there
:03:38. > :03:46.are less bobbies on the beat, estates like this could become a
:03:46. > :03:52.Diana Johnson is the Labour MP for Hull North and shadow home affairs
:03:52. > :03:59.minister. She joins us from Westminster. As a Hull MP, what is
:03:59. > :04:04.your reaction to these crime figures? I am very worried. If
:04:04. > :04:08.these are the start of a trend of crime going up, that is very
:04:08. > :04:13.worrying for my constituents and people across Hull. It is very
:04:13. > :04:18.concerning. Humberside police say the economic conditions are to
:04:18. > :04:23.blame. Other areas have financial hardship and the crime rates have
:04:23. > :04:29.not gone up, what is going wrong in Hull? The cuts have been
:04:29. > :04:33.disproportionate across Hull. If you look at the cuts to their local
:04:33. > :04:37.authority and probation, you will see that Hull has suffered very
:04:37. > :04:42.badly. We need to wait and see if this turns into a trend but it is
:04:42. > :04:46.very worrying. Labour -- Labour would have cut benefits and police
:04:46. > :04:52.numbers if they had won as well. The situation would not have been
:04:52. > :04:58.different. That is not correct. We said we could see 12% cuts to
:04:58. > :05:03.policing. The Government has gone to 20% cuts. The front loaded it.
:05:03. > :05:09.The police and authorities have had little room for manoeuvre. We think
:05:09. > :05:11.that was wrong. 20% is too much. The Home Secretary says there is no
:05:11. > :05:17.simple relationship between crime figures and the number of police,
:05:17. > :05:23.do you think there is a link? think when you look at the figures
:05:23. > :05:28.in Hull that crime has gone down since 2002, there were more police
:05:28. > :05:32.officers. We gave them more power. I would expect you to take that
:05:32. > :05:38.line, but figures for burglary have dropped in Lincolnshire. They have
:05:38. > :05:42.also had cuts. One is wrong in Hull? There are heavier cuts in
:05:42. > :05:46.Hull. We need to wait and see how this will develop. It may be that
:05:46. > :05:51.this is just two months' work of figures. It is very worrying and I
:05:51. > :05:59.hope they will not continue. More cuts are expected from Russia
:05:59. > :06:03.police. �11 million. -- Humberside police. What should we do to keep
:06:03. > :06:06.credit in the City? The resources that have been slashed so much by
:06:06. > :06:11.the Government have got to be used as effectively as possible. I will
:06:11. > :06:16.be speaking to their Police Chief Constable of Humberside to see what
:06:16. > :06:22.we can do. We must all support each other and work together to tackle
:06:22. > :06:27.the problem. We do need adequate resources.

:07:22. > :07:27.neighbours from a house fire in Hull has described the moment when
:07:27. > :07:31.he desperately tried to get them out. Danny Draper said we did what
:07:31. > :07:39.we could but it was just too late. He says he has been unable to sleep
:07:39. > :07:44.since the tragedy on Saturday which killed two people.
