:00:07. > :00:11.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. They headlines: A week

:00:11. > :00:17.on from the Boston explosion, police say they could not have done

:00:17. > :00:20.more to stop the production of illegal what car. I have spoken to

:00:20. > :00:25.the intelligence unit and we had nothing to suggest the premises or

:00:25. > :00:31.was being used. The woman left with a hole in their throat after

:00:31. > :00:34.botched surgery. You want to sit down and cried. It is the life I

:00:34. > :00:38.have lost. Following fans' fury at the club's

:00:38. > :00:41.relegation, the Lincoln City board faces a vote of no confidence.

:00:41. > :00:51.thousands of hidden cables that stop the Humber Bridge from sliding

:00:51. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:02.Will the fine weather last? Join me A week after an explosion which

:01:02. > :01:06.killed five men in Boston, police have dismissed claims that they

:01:06. > :01:09.should have known about the illegal production of alcohol at the site

:01:10. > :01:13.where the man died. People living in the area say it was common

:01:13. > :01:19.knowledge, but officers say they didn't have any calls from people

:01:19. > :01:22.worried about the problem. It's also emerged that 90 industrial

:01:22. > :01:32.units in Boston have been checked by police as part of their

:01:32. > :01:32.

:01:32. > :01:38.investigation. Phillip Norton A week on from the fatal explosion

:01:38. > :01:43.which took the lives of five men, the proof of the illegal distillate

:01:43. > :01:47.-- distillery on Broadfield Lane has now been taken away. I spent

:01:47. > :01:51.much of this week in Boston and while the shock is still clear,

:01:51. > :01:55.people have questioned whether enough was done to prevent the

:01:55. > :02:01.tragedy after previous raids on shops selling illegal vodka in

:02:01. > :02:05.March. Why did they not keep them under observation to see where the

:02:05. > :02:11.supplier was from? They gossip around town for months as that --

:02:11. > :02:15.is that it was produced somewhere locally. It doesn't take much for

:02:15. > :02:22.the police or HM Customs. They could have searched the industrial

:02:22. > :02:28.estates. They problem increased dramatically. I did make several

:02:28. > :02:32.people are aware of my thoughts and asked the cash-and-carry is if they

:02:32. > :02:38.had seen a decline in their vodka sales and they said they had

:02:38. > :02:46.dramatically. Today, the police hit back at rumours regulating that

:02:46. > :02:49.they were aware of a distillery. Nothing, absolutely nothing,

:02:49. > :02:55.related specifically to these premises and had we had that

:02:55. > :03:01.information, we would have acted upon it. As we did on recent

:03:01. > :03:04.information. It has been confirmed that 98 industrial units are being

:03:04. > :03:10.searched as part of the investigation. Some businesses were

:03:10. > :03:15.able to open today. It is a case of trying to get back to normal as

:03:15. > :03:20.quickly as possible and let our customers know we are open and

:03:20. > :03:26.trading. One week on and the unit has been cleared and all the

:03:26. > :03:30.evidence taken away. As well as the five Lithuanian men who died here,

:03:31. > :03:35.a six the man is still in a specialist burns unit at a hospital

:03:36. > :03:40.in Birmingham. He is described as critical but stable. Investigations

:03:40. > :03:48.into what caused the explosion and into the production and supply of

:03:48. > :03:53.illegal vodka from the site are continuing.

:03:53. > :03:57.We would like your thoughts on this. Do you think enough is being done

:03:57. > :04:07.to deal with the problem of counterfeit alcohol in

:04:07. > :04:07.

:04:07. > :04:11.Lincolnshire? If you want it e-mail, contact us: In a moment, the young

:04:11. > :04:18.unemployed looking for work in help - one of the toughest places in

:04:18. > :04:22.A doctor whose surgery on an East Yorkshire woman was so bad that she

:04:22. > :04:25.was left barely able to speak, has today been found guilty of

:04:25. > :04:28.misconduct. Jo Roche, who is a mother of two from Bridlington, was

:04:28. > :04:32.due to have a routine throat operation to remove her thyroid.

:04:32. > :04:36.Instead, she left surgery breathing through a tube. The surgeon

:04:36. > :04:39.responsible will learn his fate in the coming few days, but as Leanne

:04:39. > :04:49.Brown reports, his victim has spent the three years since learning to

:04:49. > :04:53.

:04:53. > :04:57.Jo has been left breathing through a tube in her neck after nerves

:04:57. > :05:03.linked to a vocal chords were severely damaged in error following

:05:03. > :05:08.a routine operation to remove her thyroid gland. I am upset at how I

:05:08. > :05:15.have been blessed and upset he didn't take the time and care to do

:05:15. > :05:21.my surgery and leave me with the life that I had. You want to sit

:05:21. > :05:28.down and cry. It is the life that I have effectively lost. Since the

:05:28. > :05:33.operation, Jo has had to learn to speak again. I had very little

:05:33. > :05:39.voice after the operation. I worked at it and worked at it to get the

:05:39. > :05:45.voice I had, which is nothing like I used to have. But it is some

:05:45. > :05:50.semblance of normality. It has changed every aspect of her life.

:05:51. > :05:55.It has affected everything from what I buy a for cleaning to the

:05:55. > :06:00.activities I do with my children. I was on holiday recently and I was

:06:00. > :06:05.on the edge of the pool and not being in there with them and

:06:05. > :06:10.feeling guilty. The operation was carried out by Naif El-Barghouti at

:06:10. > :06:15.Scarborough Hospital. In a second operation a year later he was due

:06:15. > :06:20.to repair an aneurysm on Wilfred Taylor's left leg but he play it --

:06:20. > :06:26.bled to death after a series of mistakes. You never think it will

:06:26. > :06:32.happen to a member of your family. It boils down to left and right. He

:06:32. > :06:37.was to be operated on his left side and he tied the right side. What I

:06:37. > :06:41.wanted to know was how could that happen? At the inquest into Mr

:06:41. > :06:46.Taylor's death, the surgeon lied under oath about the size of the

:06:46. > :06:52.aneurysm. The disciplinary panel said it damaged the medical

:06:52. > :06:55.profession's reputation. Hopefully, at bay willow and then used to be

:06:55. > :07:01.more supervision and lessons will be learned to bring in better

:07:01. > :07:04.training and avoid major problems occurring again. Nothing will bring

:07:04. > :07:07.Wilfred back but Jo is determined not to let what happened ruin her

:07:07. > :07:11.life. Leanne, What will happen to this

:07:11. > :07:18.surgeon to make sure that other patients don't suffer in the way

:07:18. > :07:22.that Jo Roche did? Now that the General Medical

:07:22. > :07:26.Council has decided that Mr Salmond's fitness to practise has

:07:26. > :07:31.been impaired, they will have to decide on a punishment. They could

:07:31. > :07:35.strike him off so that he could not practise again. The most lenient

:07:35. > :07:40.response would be to caution him for up to five years or they could

:07:40. > :07:44.let him continue to practise as long as he feels some conditions

:07:44. > :07:48.and that could mean they give him more training before he is allowed

:07:48. > :07:54.to operate again. The final option would be to suspend him from

:07:54. > :07:57.surgery for a period of time. The GMC hearing is continuing and his

:07:57. > :08:02.professional future should be decided by a disciplinary panel

:08:02. > :08:06.tomorrow. More news tonight in brief: Staff

:08:06. > :08:10.at a Co-op in East Yorkshire have been threatened by a robber who has

:08:10. > :08:12.made off with an amount of cash. It happened at this store on Market

:08:12. > :08:16.Street in Pocklington just before two o'clock. Police are searching

:08:16. > :08:19.the area by air and foot and appealing for witnesses.

:08:19. > :08:22.A charity in Scunthorpe says the number of families asking for

:08:22. > :08:26.emergency food parcels to help them is rising every month. The Foodbank

:08:26. > :08:29.has been open for a year and has already helped more than 1,000

:08:29. > :08:33.people living in poverty. Volunteers say the rising price of

:08:33. > :08:36.food is making their work even more important.

:08:36. > :08:40.Unemployed people in Hull are living in one of the toughest

:08:40. > :08:43.cities in the country to find a job. Over the last five years, people

:08:43. > :08:47.looking for work have made up a greater percentage of the

:08:47. > :08:50.population in Hull than anywhere else in the country. Now, there are

:08:50. > :08:54.concerns that people are having to take jobs that they are

:08:54. > :08:57.overqualified for just to pay the bills and this is knocking some out

:08:57. > :09:07.of the jobs market completely. Our Business Correspondent, Paul Murphy,

:09:07. > :09:09.

:09:09. > :09:14.This lottery-funded project in Hull is trying to give these young

:09:14. > :09:18.people some of the skills needed to apply for jobs and to market

:09:18. > :09:24.themselves. But they know the job market in the city has rarely been

:09:24. > :09:29.tougher. Most places are looking for experience or licences and if

:09:29. > :09:34.you haven't got them it is a struggle because you haven't got

:09:34. > :09:39.the money -- money all licences. have been looking on website and

:09:39. > :09:45.handing out see beats and it has been horrible. One person through

:09:45. > :09:49.my CV in the bin because I was under 18. From 16 to 64, the rate

:09:49. > :09:55.of joblessness in the city has increased more than anywhere in the

:09:55. > :09:59.UK. Why does Hull have these problems with unemployment? Experts

:09:59. > :10:03.analysing the figures say it is the lowest skilled workers who are

:10:03. > :10:09.being driven out of the jobs market as it becomes ever more competitive.

:10:09. > :10:14.The problem with Hull, they say, is that it has far too many low-

:10:14. > :10:19.skilled workers. This recruitment specialists says the impact of

:10:19. > :10:22.recession means employers will no longer take a risk on employee in

:10:22. > :10:27.the Blair was killed under- qualified. Companies are desperate

:10:27. > :10:32.to recruit as they recover from the recession but they need people with

:10:32. > :10:36.relevant skills and experience to encourage them to take people on.

:10:36. > :10:41.But gaining vital experience is difficult for those with few

:10:41. > :10:46.qualifications. It doesn't mean they are low-quality workers or

:10:46. > :10:50.less dedicated it is just that they are less academic. We try to chain

:10:50. > :10:56.-- train them to a point where their skills are improved so that

:10:56. > :10:59.employers think they are worth taking on. In an employer's market,

:10:59. > :11:03.getting on the first run it is perhaps the toughest step of all

:11:03. > :11:09.but these young people are not giving up hope.

:11:09. > :11:12.Diana Johnson is the MP for Hull North and joins me now.

:11:13. > :11:16.Unemployment in Hull is the highest in the country and your

:11:16. > :11:23.constituency is suffering particularly. Why are things so bad

:11:23. > :11:27.in Hull? First, it is disappointing to hear those figures and I think

:11:28. > :11:30.you describe some of the problems in Hull with skills and

:11:30. > :11:35.qualifications and attracting businesses to the city. It is a

:11:35. > :11:39.whole number of things and that is why we need to redouble our efforts

:11:39. > :11:44.to ensure our youngsters get the qualifications and skills they need

:11:44. > :11:51.and they get some experience. That is what is so disappointing about

:11:51. > :11:54.the future jobs fund which has been scrapped. In 2008, the figures for

:11:54. > :11:59.jobseeker's allowance were higher than they are now so how much blame

:11:59. > :12:02.does your party need to take? worries me now is that we are

:12:02. > :12:07.seeing massive cut by this government and they are starting to

:12:07. > :12:11.come through. I have a feeling these figures will get worse and

:12:11. > :12:16.that will be really trouble some for people in Hull. In the last

:12:16. > :12:22.couple of weeks in Parliament, we had a vote it to use some of the

:12:22. > :12:26.bankers bonus money to levy to pay to get more youngsters into work.

:12:26. > :12:32.Unfortunately, my party put that forward but it was voted against.

:12:32. > :12:36.It is just showing an example of what we need to do. We have just

:12:36. > :12:41.seen that people have to take on jobs they are over-qualified for.

:12:41. > :12:45.What impact will this have on those who have fewer or less

:12:45. > :12:53.qualifications or no qualifications? That is a difficult

:12:53. > :12:57.position for them. That is why it is so important that education and

:12:57. > :13:04.getting qualifications and skills is so important to our youngsters.

:13:04. > :13:09.The investment that has gone into education and the grants to keep

:13:09. > :13:12.youngsters on at school was vital to the future of Hull. I am worried

:13:12. > :13:15.that university fees are trebling and allowances are being scrapped

:13:15. > :13:25.so we are putting youngsters in a difficult position in preparing

:13:25. > :13:35.

:13:35. > :13:45.them for the jobs market. We would You can get in touch using the

:13:45. > :13:53.

:13:53. > :13:59.Still to come - we are live at Sincil Bank as the Lincoln City

:13:59. > :14:05.board face a vote of no confidence. This is a part of the Humber Bridge

:14:05. > :14:15.most people have never seen. I will show you how what is happening down

:14:15. > :14:15.

:14:16. > :14:21.here will preserve of the bridge If you have got a photograph you

:14:21. > :14:31.are proud of it then send it in. Here is two nights. Thank you very

:14:31. > :14:49.

:14:49. > :14:59.much indeed. -- here is the picture I have noticed that you can spell

:14:59. > :14:59.

:14:59. > :15:07.in sob now on several of your tweeds! -- insomnia. Anyway, on to

:15:07. > :15:14.the weather. Apart from a few showers most of the region should

:15:14. > :15:22.stay dry tomorrow. A glorious end to the after noon today. Beautiful

:15:22. > :15:27.conditions. North Lincolnshire should be bright now and the cloud

:15:27. > :15:35.further south should break up soon. A fine ended to the day for most of

:15:35. > :15:45.us. Try with clear spells overnight. -- a fine end. The sun will rise in

:15:45. > :15:59.

:15:59. > :16:03.the morning at five m and set at -- 5 am. Showers tomorrow should be

:16:03. > :16:09.hit and miss. The breeze in the north means that temperatures will

:16:09. > :16:16.not be so good along the coast. But it does not feel so bad in the

:16:16. > :16:22.sunshine. Farther west, up towards 19 Celsius. There is some

:16:22. > :16:28.uncertainty as regards Saturday's forecast. Patchy rain in coastal

:16:28. > :16:36.areas but further west it should stay fine. Saturday and Sunday

:16:36. > :16:46.looks pleasant, mostly dry with some sunshine. That is the forecast.

:16:46. > :16:47.

:16:47. > :16:53.We will join you again tomorrow Shareholders angry at the where

:16:53. > :16:56.Lincoln City has been the run will attempt a takeover tonight. An

:16:56. > :17:03.extraordinary general meeting has been called after 1 million was

:17:03. > :17:09.lost during a spell in which they dropped out of the Football League.

:17:09. > :17:16.It was one of the most painful days in club history. Relegation crept

:17:16. > :17:22.up on the club on the final day of the season. Since then, costs have

:17:22. > :17:25.been slashed and painful off-field decisions have been taken. Now some

:17:25. > :17:32.unhappy shareholders have forced an extraordinary general meeting to

:17:32. > :17:37.hold the direct us to account. We feel that we could effect

:17:38. > :17:43.serious change. -- holder of the directors to

:17:43. > :17:47.account. The members of the board should to

:17:47. > :17:51.consider their position and realise it is untenable.

:17:51. > :17:57.One man believes that the board will win the case tonight because

:17:57. > :18:03.of their block vote but that the overall issue is not cut and drive.

:18:03. > :18:09.This comes down to two things. The losses of recent years and the

:18:09. > :18:14.financial position that has resulted from it, and the fact that

:18:14. > :18:19.being in the conference is not good enough.

:18:19. > :18:24.Relegation is never good enough for but at this club it has led to

:18:24. > :18:31.bitter recriminations. How are those in charge of the club

:18:31. > :18:37.reacting to this opposition? They see the meeting tonight as an

:18:37. > :18:43.inconvenience. Certainly they want to move on with the signing new

:18:43. > :18:50.players and preparing for the new season. Their meeting is likely to

:18:50. > :18:57.take several hours. Both sides however believe they can find fresh

:18:57. > :19:05.ideas, new solutions, a means of taking the club for work in the

:19:05. > :19:10.brave new world for them of non- League football.

:19:10. > :19:15.Hull City's record signing, Jimmy Bullard, has been suspended for a

:19:15. > :19:21.breach of club discipline. He will be suspended for a fortnight during

:19:21. > :19:29.an incident during a pre-season trip to Slovenia. The club have not

:19:29. > :19:35.yet commented. Thank you for your comments about

:19:35. > :19:45.last night's Hull Trains story. The train operator has lost half of its

:19:45. > :19:46.

:19:46. > :19:52.fleet due to maintenance issues. A huge response last night. James

:19:52. > :20:01.says, I really used those trains to get to London because they are so

:20:01. > :20:05.unreliable. John got in touch to say, I am a regular user and

:20:05. > :20:13.they're great when they are working well but they are not delivering

:20:13. > :20:20.the reliability. Andrew rates, I think it is one of the best

:20:20. > :20:30.companies in Hull. Good customer service and cheerful staff. Thank

:20:30. > :20:31.

:20:31. > :20:37.There is just a fortnight until a big change takes place in local

:20:37. > :20:42.television broadcasting. The digital switch over. A health

:20:42. > :20:52.scheme is still available to the vulnerable and anybody over the age

:20:52. > :20:53.

:20:53. > :20:58.of 75. I wonder if you might help us today.

:20:58. > :21:05.We are asking people to give a helping hand.

:21:05. > :21:08.Maggie Philbin is on a mission to help people effect the switch over

:21:08. > :21:16.from analogue to digital and insular that nobody who is

:21:16. > :21:21.vulnerable will be left without a signal. -- and make sure.

:21:21. > :21:29.There is no way of telling unless people tell us how they are

:21:29. > :21:35.watching. We are asking people, lend a helping hand, learn about

:21:35. > :21:41.the switch-over help scheme. But for Selby Vision at team has

:21:41. > :21:45.been on hand to help explain how people have to make sure of their

:21:45. > :21:51.televisions will still work next month.

:21:51. > :21:58.I was given some help by the Government because of my age. A

:21:58. > :22:04.date was organised and someone has come and given me a digital box for

:22:04. > :22:12.my second television. My main one was already digital.

:22:12. > :22:21.But you do not need to splash the cash. Add digital box will help

:22:21. > :22:26.convert most televisions. But you will need to convert before 17th

:22:26. > :22:36.August before analogue signals are switched off for ever. If you want

:22:36. > :22:44.

:22:44. > :22:54.to learn more you can contact Some of the biggest names in jazz

:22:54. > :22:55.

:22:55. > :23:00.will be performing in Hull over the next few days. The city's

:23:00. > :23:05.International Jazz Festival starts this evening. Unlike previous years

:23:05. > :23:10.there will be no open air performances because of rising

:23:10. > :23:16.costs. Being at Glastonbury was a great

:23:16. > :23:25.thrill of but coming here to perform my own music is what I

:23:25. > :23:30.really love for. -- what I'll live for.

:23:30. > :23:37.We have been celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Humber Bridge.

:23:37. > :23:41.That might be relatively young but it has had much work done. All to

:23:41. > :23:51.make sure that it remains in safe condition for the thousands of

:23:51. > :23:52.

:23:52. > :23:56.motorists who use it every day. Technology has come at a long way

:23:56. > :24:00.since the bridge was first built. Over the years methods of

:24:00. > :24:07.maintaining it have seen some big changes.

:24:07. > :24:12.We need to maintain decent access. We have ways to get through with
