:00:13. > :00:16.Good evening and welcome to Look North.

:00:16. > :00:24.Volunteers joined a police search as concerns grow for a missing

:00:24. > :00:26.pensioner. When it is one of hours we have to go and find her.

:00:26. > :00:33.Student nurses are told to leave their posts at a Lincolnshire

:00:33. > :00:36.hospital after "serious concerns" were raised about their training.

:00:36. > :00:39.This will be devastating for them and destroy the last few months'

:00:39. > :00:41.good work. Preparations for thousands of

:00:41. > :00:45.visitors as a weekend of top cycling begins in Beverly.

:00:45. > :00:54.And we get the real life story of the fox and the hound who became

:00:54. > :01:04.friends. And of course the all important weekend weather forecast

:01:04. > :01:08.

:01:08. > :01:10.So many people have volunteered today to help in the hunt for

:01:10. > :01:16.missing pensioner from East Yorkshire that the police have had

:01:16. > :01:22.to turn some of them away. 77-year- old Marlene Wagstaff was last seen

:01:22. > :01:25.a week ago at her home. She suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Officers

:01:26. > :01:32.say support from the local community could be the key to

:01:32. > :01:40.finding her. We do know that she is physically

:01:40. > :01:45.fit, she can walk. We are hopeful to find her alive and well.

:01:46. > :01:50.A briefing for volunteers, one week since 77-year-old Marlene Wagstaff

:01:50. > :01:54.disappeared. She went missing from her home after a walk last Friday,

:01:54. > :02:01.and the disappearance has prompted a massive surge from Withernsea's

:02:01. > :02:07.local community. -- search. More than any city, everybody knows each

:02:07. > :02:11.other. It is one of ours. We heard this morning on Look North there

:02:11. > :02:16.was a requirement for volunteers to search for this pensioner in

:02:16. > :02:20.Withernsea. So we thought it was very worthwhile, we are all getting

:02:20. > :02:26.older and it could happen to anyone. I believe she has Alzheimer's.

:02:26. > :02:29.That is the problem for police, physically fit, Marlene was well

:02:29. > :02:33.known for her walking but surges have had to take into account the

:02:33. > :02:37.state of her health. People with this disease can get very confused,

:02:37. > :02:42.they have means they might not be able to meet themselves. It could

:02:42. > :02:47.be as simple as being not able to find their way home, but being

:02:47. > :02:52.physically OK. Or, in some places, it could be more serious.

:02:52. > :02:58.Today, 30 volunteers helped scour coastal fields miles from Marlene's

:02:58. > :03:03.home. For her family, it is the second surge of the week and

:03:03. > :03:06.despite the scale, these volunteers are not giving up hope. Speaking on

:03:06. > :03:12.behalf of much of the village, they want to be here today at the been

:03:12. > :03:15.helping with the search. They want to find Mrs Wagstaff. Everybody is

:03:15. > :03:19.helping as much as they can. Wherever we go, we are all looking

:03:19. > :03:23.out. I think everyone the village feels the same.

:03:23. > :03:32.There have been reported sightings of Marlene has since disappeared on

:03:32. > :03:40.Friday, but until she has found, a search by this community continues.

:03:40. > :03:43.We will continue to follow that story. In a moment, operators of

:03:43. > :03:51.First Hull Trains are told that they must do better after an

:03:51. > :03:56.equipment failure and various disruptions.

:03:56. > :03:59.The town's MP does not want his family using the hospital and the

:03:59. > :04:03.chief executive has had to apologise to patients for their

:04:03. > :04:06.porker. And now nurses have been withdrawn from Boston Pilgrim

:04:06. > :04:09.Hospital with immediate effect because of concerns about their

:04:09. > :04:14.education. The NHS Trust responsible for the site says the

:04:14. > :04:23.move will not compromise patient care. The unions say it will put a

:04:23. > :04:25.huge strain on the remaining staff. Student nurses from Lincoln,

:04:25. > :04:28.Nottingham and the Open University were told in the middle of their

:04:28. > :04:32.shifts the their placements have been suspended and they had to

:04:32. > :04:35.leave the hospital immediately. It is all on the advice of the

:04:35. > :04:39.Nursing midwifery council which regulates standards of training.

:04:39. > :04:43.They say they had serious concerns about the learning environment

:04:43. > :04:49.after meeting with the Government's health watchdog. Morale is

:04:49. > :04:53.unbelievably low. The things that have happened over the first part

:04:53. > :05:00.of this year have been devastating. We are at a point where we thought

:05:00. > :05:05.we were turning a corner, and we have had this monumental shock. It

:05:05. > :05:15.will take staff right back. It has been a torrid year for

:05:15. > :05:46.

:05:46. > :05:51.Patience it a day have nothing but praise for the hospital. Care was

:05:51. > :05:56.superb from beginning to end. I have just come back to get signed

:05:56. > :06:04.off, everything has been perfect. I have no problems. It was all right.

:06:04. > :06:08.By common, he it was clean and tidy. -- I came in, it was clean and tidy.

:06:08. > :06:16.Unions are worried that the loss of so many staff will affect the

:06:16. > :06:21.hospital's ability to function. There are already flaws in the

:06:21. > :06:24.amount of care being given. Things have been changed to try and do

:06:24. > :06:28.just those issues, but it last of over 100 staff, we can only assume

:06:28. > :06:34.those issues would get worse. The NHS Trust has told us that

:06:34. > :06:37.students working here at Boston Pilgrim Hospital are in addition to

:06:37. > :06:40.their current staff and therefore their ability did deliver safe

:06:40. > :06:49.services is not reliant on their presence. They also wanted to

:06:49. > :06:53.reassure patients that quality of care was the first priority.

:06:53. > :07:01.It has also been said today that if the hospital is not suitable to

:07:01. > :07:05.train nurses, it is not suitable to care for sick and vulnerable people.

:07:05. > :07:10.I spoke to Professor Patrick Callaghan from the University of

:07:10. > :07:14.Nottingham, who have withdrawn 52 student nurses from the hospital.

:07:14. > :07:19.The nursing and midwifery council claims to have serious concerns

:07:19. > :07:24.about the hospital. I began by asking him what those concerns were.

:07:24. > :07:34.I cannot comment on that because they have not relate them to make.

:07:34. > :07:36.

:07:36. > :07:41.I suggest you direct that question And yet you act on their

:07:41. > :07:44.recommendations? Yes, they are the regulatory Commission. They called

:07:44. > :07:47.us yesterday and requested with immediate effect, the withdrawal of

:07:47. > :07:51.students from Boston Pilgrim Hospital, because of what they

:07:51. > :07:55.reported to be serious concerns. This is a very rare occurrence.

:07:55. > :08:05.What does it say about the current standard at the hospital, to you?

:08:05. > :08:06.

:08:06. > :08:09.Well, immediately, when I hear that, our principal objective is to

:08:09. > :08:12.ensure that when students are running clinical -- clinical

:08:12. > :08:17.placement figure to high-quality learning experience. They were

:08:17. > :08:22.suggesting that there was a danger to that, and therefore, we took the

:08:22. > :08:29.action needed on the instructions. What is being said, in effect, is

:08:29. > :08:32.that the hospital cannot be trusted to train and teach student nurses.

:08:32. > :08:35.It is the Primary purpose of the university with the hospital to

:08:35. > :08:40.train students. Again, the question as to the hospital of the care at

:08:40. > :08:44.the hospital is best directed to the hospital itself. Our concern is

:08:44. > :08:47.that the student's learning. Patients Association have said,

:08:47. > :08:50.what a damning condemnation of the care being provided by the Boston

:08:50. > :08:55.Pilgrim Hospital, if there is no confidence in its training of

:08:55. > :08:58.future nurses. That is the opinion of the patient's Association. Our

:08:58. > :09:05.Primary concern is the quality of the students' learning and that is

:09:05. > :09:11.why we took action on that. will these student nurses be

:09:11. > :09:20.feeling tonight? Pulled off yesterday, when they thought they

:09:20. > :09:25.were anyplace of excellence. student nurses, their initial

:09:25. > :09:29.concern and shock at the action we took, as requested, I e-mailed all

:09:29. > :09:39.of the affected students. I assured them of our concern for their

:09:39. > :09:42.

:09:42. > :09:46.learning and explaining why we were taking the action we were, and

:09:46. > :09:51.instructing them that we were trying to not disrupt their

:09:51. > :09:56.learning by finding alternative placement. I was informed that they

:09:56. > :10:00.were assured -- reassured by my e- mail. Thank you.

:10:00. > :10:04.Be nursing and midwifery council were unable to join us on the

:10:04. > :10:12.programme tonight. Let's throw this Open, what do you think about this

:10:12. > :10:16.as far as the condition of the NHS in Lincolnshire is concerned? Maybe

:10:16. > :10:26.you are one of the students, and you want to comment? If you want to

:10:26. > :10:39.

:10:39. > :10:42.Some more news now. Extra police patrols will target

:10:42. > :10:46.parts of the rail network in Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire,

:10:46. > :10:54.affected by cable theft. The thefts of copper wire can use huge delays

:10:54. > :10:56.and the trains. -- cause. Officers are also speaking to scrap metal

:10:56. > :10:59.dealers as part of a crackdown on one of the country's fastest-

:10:59. > :11:05.growing crimes. A woman who lost her legs in the

:11:05. > :11:08.7/7 attacks has come to Lincolnshire to tell her story. Dr

:11:08. > :11:11.Gill Hicks had to learn to walk again following the explosion on

:11:11. > :11:15.the London Underground, which killed 26 of a fellow passengers

:11:15. > :11:19.and injured hundreds more. Although she says she will never forgive the

:11:19. > :11:29.bombers, the humanity that her rescuers showed her has become an

:11:29. > :11:39.inspiration. 7th July, 2005. A date etched into

:11:39. > :11:45.

:11:45. > :11:49.For was on a train I do not I was late, I am not normally late.

:11:49. > :11:54.It is the one day I should have been in the same carriage I

:11:54. > :12:00.normally am. Sitting just one person away from the following

:12:00. > :12:06.explosion, she lost both of her legs in one second. It is as fast

:12:06. > :12:10.as clicking your fingers and then blackness. The time it takes to

:12:10. > :12:14.click your fingers, the world changed in that instant.

:12:14. > :12:24.Her experience could so easily have made her more separatist in her

:12:24. > :12:25.

:12:25. > :12:29.views of other religions. Instead, it works the other way. Today, she

:12:29. > :12:36.is the main speaker at a major event for Muslims in Lincolnshire.

:12:36. > :12:40.She had a humanitarian message. have been given my life back, given

:12:40. > :12:46.a second chance. Howard will use that wisely?

:12:46. > :12:55.Her message fits in with ours. It is one of action. She talks about

:12:55. > :13:00.peace, as something we can all work towards and aim for.

:13:00. > :13:05.To be acts of those who rescued me, I learnt about humanity. -- drew

:13:05. > :13:09.the acts. I felt absolute, unconditional love for the people

:13:09. > :13:16.holding my hand and touching my face. They were willing to me to

:13:16. > :13:26.stay alive. There was more good in the world than there is not. I feel

:13:26. > :13:31.

:13:31. > :13:37.that I'm a living example of what Still ahead on the programme. The

:13:37. > :13:47.view from the driving seat as a weekend of cycling begins.

:13:47. > :13:49.

:13:49. > :13:56.And we meet the Fox and Hounds who If you have got a picture you are

:13:56. > :14:05.proud of, send a tenner. This picture is of St Andrews Church.

:14:05. > :14:13.Thank you for the picture. Leanne on Twitter asks twice

:14:13. > :14:23.Spalding is not on the Now the weather..

:14:23. > :14:23.

:14:23. > :14:33.I have never heard of it. No one was laughing here!

:14:33. > :14:35.

:14:35. > :14:43.It is one of my favourite parts of Variable cloud with some sunshine

:14:43. > :14:51.over the weekend. Things are looking quite pleasant. A pleasant

:14:51. > :14:56.weekend. High pressure just about a in charge. Looking at the satellite

:14:56. > :15:04.sequence, there is a lot of cloud on it. A lot of it is high cloud so

:15:04. > :15:12.it is quite bright. A nice evening, all parts dry. Generally, that

:15:12. > :15:17.cloud will come and go. Some areas becoming quite cloudy. Inland,

:15:17. > :15:27.temperatures could drift back to eight Celsius. In towns, staying in

:15:27. > :15:33.

:15:33. > :15:38.double figures. Tomorrow will be dry and fine and bright. There will

:15:38. > :15:43.be some sunshine. It will cloud over at times as you can see from

:15:43. > :15:48.the graphics. We are expecting some big cloud breaks so sunny spells

:15:48. > :15:54.for most of us, meaning it will feel quite pleasant. It will be a

:15:54. > :16:02.little bit cooler along the coast. Inland, we will see the best of the

:16:02. > :16:11.temperatures. On to Sunday, it looks like it will be another fine

:16:11. > :16:21.and dry day. The warmest day. All in all, a pleasant weekend. Early

:16:21. > :16:29.

:16:29. > :16:34.next weekend -- next week it is Very nice work slipping in

:16:34. > :16:37.Spalding! "Must do better". That was the message from Hull's three

:16:37. > :16:39.MPs today when they met the operators of First Hull Trains. The

:16:39. > :16:48.privately-run train service has been severly disrupted in recent

:16:48. > :16:52.weeks by recurring equipment failure. Paul Murphy reports. A

:16:52. > :16:57.series of electrical and mechanical failures in the train units

:16:57. > :17:00.themselves has created huge problems for the company. For weeks,

:17:00. > :17:06.the service to London has been disrupted and the image of the

:17:06. > :17:11.company badly damaged. Today, the City's three MPs voiced their

:17:11. > :17:18.concerns. Today we set out very clearly that we expect them to sort

:17:18. > :17:25.out problems that -- problems of reliability. Also air conditioning

:17:25. > :17:30.and toilets, things like that. We will be constantly talking to them

:17:30. > :17:35.about this. The company has repeatedly apologised for its

:17:35. > :17:40.failings and is now back to running a full shed will service. One of

:17:40. > :17:46.the things I really love about the company is this -- is the passion

:17:46. > :17:51.that the staff has on being able to deliver good customer service.

:17:51. > :17:55.some cop -- for some, at the apologies are not enough and have

:17:55. > :17:59.event raised to fresh calls to renationalise the railways.

:17:59. > :18:06.cannot run a really like that. I want to talk to the regulators and

:18:06. > :18:11.get some decent service. At today's meeting, MPs also voiced concern

:18:11. > :18:19.about the wider economic damage of one-arm reliable train service. The

:18:19. > :18:24.company describes the meeting as constructive.

:18:24. > :18:29.An Olympic gold medallist will try and defend his title tonight as

:18:29. > :18:35.Beverley hosts a weekend of top cycling. It Clancy will be cycling

:18:35. > :18:43.through the town. Our reporter is in a prime spot this evening. Just

:18:43. > :18:47.how big an event is this? As you say, there are 80 riders

:18:47. > :18:52.taking part in this big race tonight. With the Olympics just a

:18:52. > :18:56.year away, it is an event they will be taking very seriously indeed. It

:18:56. > :19:02.is of course the national championship and so the competition

:19:02. > :19:07.here tonight will be very fears. A beggar might not just for her

:19:07. > :19:11.cycling but also for the local economy. Preparing today for what

:19:12. > :19:16.has become one of the biggest cycling races in the country. A

:19:16. > :19:23.one-off night when Beverley's Street are transformed into a

:19:23. > :19:28.spectacular race track. People will be going in excess of 40 miles an

:19:28. > :19:31.hour. People do not appreciate how fast these guys go. When you're

:19:31. > :19:40.stood at the barrier, you can actually feel the draught as they

:19:40. > :19:47.go by. Cyclists taking part tonight include this gold medallist. How

:19:47. > :19:51.does Beverley compared to other tracks? It is quite narrow round

:19:51. > :19:55.the back so I will stay at the front two out of trouble. It weighs

:19:55. > :20:00.you down slowly, all the accelerating and braking at corners,

:20:00. > :20:09.it that hard towards the end. Tonight's big race starts and

:20:09. > :20:13.finishes in Beverley's its market. Over the weekend, it is not just

:20:13. > :20:18.the elite riders who will get the chance to show off their skills.

:20:18. > :20:24.Tomorrow, 650 cycling enthusiasts will be taking part in their own

:20:24. > :20:29.rates -- in their own race. It is a chance for the organisers to

:20:29. > :20:36.promote cycling not just as a sport but as an active and healthy way of

:20:36. > :20:42.life. Bikes 10 to reside in gates - - in sheds and garages and people

:20:42. > :20:46.stop using them for so it -- for short distances. We would like to

:20:46. > :20:53.encourage them to use them more. is a big night for that time's

:20:53. > :20:57.retailers. It is unexpected boost to the economy. It is good, they go

:20:57. > :21:07.straight past the front of the shop. People come out and support it and

:21:07. > :21:16.

:21:16. > :21:20.watch it. So Beverley will tonight take on a whole new appeal. The

:21:20. > :21:25.elite race will not start here until 7:30pm. Already though, the

:21:25. > :21:29.crowds are beginning to build for what promises to be a spectacle.

:21:29. > :21:36.There is a full weekend of racing in the countryside around East

:21:36. > :21:39.Yorkshire. Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers

:21:39. > :21:42.are battling it out for the final Super League play-off spot. Hull FC

:21:42. > :21:45.take on league leaders Wigan tonight while Hull KR are away to

:21:45. > :21:50.Huddersfield tomorrow. Both are hoping to improve on disappointing

:21:50. > :21:53.results last weekend, as Kate Sweeting reports.

:21:53. > :21:56.Hull FC were knocked out of the Challenge Cup after this defeat at

:21:56. > :22:00.the hands of Leeds Rhinos at the weekend. They'd started well with

:22:00. > :22:03.three tries in the first half, but Leeds stepped up their game after

:22:03. > :22:13.the break. But Coach Richard Agar thinks the team can bounce back for

:22:13. > :22:19.tonight's game against league leaders wigan. We have a lot of

:22:19. > :22:24.energy and enthusiasm. They know the task in front of them and while

:22:24. > :22:28.we had some disappointments last week, no one is going to feel sorry

:22:28. > :22:32.for us it not least ourselves. it's a match Hull KR will be

:22:32. > :22:35.watching closely, as the Robins are hot on the heels of the Black and

:22:35. > :22:38.Whites in the table. Both teams are vying for the eighth play-off place,

:22:38. > :22:46.and the Robins also have high hopes for when they travel to

:22:46. > :22:53.Huddersfield tomorrow. We have to win. It is not guaranteed. We hope

:22:53. > :22:59.to have a good game. It should be a close contest. If that result goes

:22:59. > :23:03.our way and we do get 10, for the main fixtures of the season,

:23:03. > :23:06.destiny is in our hands. Rovers went out of the Cup following a

:23:06. > :23:09.hammering at St Helens last week, but had won four straight league

:23:09. > :23:11.games prior to that defeat. They'll hope to carry that form into their

:23:12. > :23:20.trip to West Yorkshire Powerboat racing is coming to Hull

:23:20. > :23:29.this weekend. That game will be on tonight at 8

:23:29. > :23:31.o'clock. They have all the build up on television tonight. The high

:23:31. > :23:34.speed competition is part of the British Superboat Championships.

:23:34. > :23:39.Organisers say they expect huge crowds to watch the sport's top

:23:39. > :23:41.racers compete at Hull Marina tomorrow.

:23:41. > :23:48.Lincolnshire swimmer Lizzie Simmonds has qualified for the

:23:48. > :23:50.finals of the World Swimming Championships in China. Lizzie came

:23:50. > :24:00.seventh in the 100 metres backstroke final in Shanghai

:24:00. > :24:00.

:24:00. > :24:04.earlier this week. The 200 metres is her preferred event.

:24:04. > :24:09.When it comes to pets, most people know that they've got to make sure

:24:09. > :24:12.that their animals get on. But one family in Beverley is managing to

:24:12. > :24:15.keep the peace between two traditional enemies. Eva the Jack

:24:15. > :24:25.Russell regularly takes to the streets with her best friend, Todd,

:24:25. > :24:39.

:24:39. > :24:47.who happens to be a fox. Phillip # Down the road is where I will
