:01:09. > :01:12.been collecting their A-level results and finding out if they've
:01:12. > :01:14.made the grade. This year, universities were expecting an
:01:14. > :01:17.unprecedented demand as students try and beat the tuition fees,
:01:17. > :01:23.being introduced next year. The number of passes has risen for the
:01:23. > :01:25.29th year in a row. Just over 27% of students achieved A or A* macro
:01:26. > :01:32.grades. Overall, the A-level pass rate rose slightly from 97.6% to
:01:32. > :01:41.97.8%. In Lincolnshire, initial figures suggest the pass rate is
:01:41. > :01:44.slightly higher than this. Siobhan Robbins reports.
:01:44. > :01:51.It's the day thousands of teenagers across the area have been waiting

:02:30. > :02:32.with that. This call centre at the University
:02:33. > :02:40.of Lincoln is for those who didn't get their expected grades. They'll
:02:40. > :02:44.now enter clearing with warnings this year is more competitive.
:02:44. > :02:51.then there was not am not a demand on this is double stop the There
:02:51. > :03:00.are lots of people trying to get into universities. So students will
:03:00. > :03:06.feel the pressure, I think. If they do next year, the costs will be a
:03:06. > :03:09.lot higher. Every time that phone rings, it is another nervous
:03:09. > :03:14.student fine fireplace. The pressure is ready on this year.
:03:14. > :03:19.Obligation numbers are up as people rush to avoid next year's price
:03:19. > :03:23.hikes. The organisation which deals with applications has had so much
:03:23. > :03:26.interest, its website actually crashed today.
:03:26. > :03:28.For others like Chris from Hull, rising fees and an uncertain jobs
:03:28. > :03:38.market has put them off university altogether. He's going straight
:03:38. > :03:43.
:03:43. > :03:47.into accountancy training. This way, in four years, I will be doing
:03:47. > :03:50.professional qualifications, about one or have 20,000 of debt.
:03:50. > :03:53.So while for many of these students, today is a cause for celebration,
:03:53. > :03:56.thousands of others will be facing hard choices about the future.
:03:56. > :03:59.Joining me on this now we've got Scott Davidson from the University
:03:59. > :04:09.of Lincoln, and John Leech the Pro- Vice chancellor at the University
:04:09. > :04:15.of Hull. Mr Davidson, if I can come to you first, how has today gone?
:04:15. > :04:21.Have you still got places? There are very few places available now.
:04:21. > :04:26.If it -- it has been hectic all day. Just about all our courses are
:04:26. > :04:31.closed. How has the reaction been today? As expected? Pretty much
:04:31. > :04:36.serve. We were a lot busier this morning then we thought we would be.
:04:36. > :04:40.We played 200 calls in the first hour. Generally, we have been
:04:40. > :04:45.claiming that a number of calls throughout the day. We will be open
:04:45. > :04:52.until 8pm. And your best advice for those who did not get the results
:04:52. > :04:57.they were hoping for and have not got a place sorted? The main piece
:04:57. > :05:03.of advice is do not panic, keep your options open, look at other
:05:03. > :05:08.put it -- look at other potential pathways. Look at further education
:05:08. > :05:13.colleges, look at foundation degrees, look at entering the
:05:13. > :05:16.workplace, but basically, explore all your options.
:05:16. > :05:25.Scott Davidson at the University of Lincoln, thank you very much. And
:05:25. > :05:29.now to the picture in Hull. Is it a similar story there? It is similar
:05:29. > :05:33.to Lincoln. We're just about closed now in all areas. Do you think this
:05:33. > :05:40.time next year things will be very different? Will we see this kind of
:05:40. > :05:50.rush? We are in interesting times. What I would like all young people
:05:50. > :05:56.to do, those aged 17, all the headlines about the debts. They
:05:56. > :06:02.will be paying back once they earn 22,000 a year, they will pay back
:06:02. > :06:07.about 21 a month. Some students will never pay back the dead.
:06:07. > :06:14.university is charging the maximum, 9,000. Will it put people off?
:06:14. > :06:20.will have to wait and see about that. Interest at open days has
:06:20. > :06:24.been very high. We had our best ever numbers this year. Do you
:06:24. > :06:28.think university generally, with tuition fees and the number of
:06:28. > :06:34.graduates ending up in non-graduate jobs, his university going to lose
:06:34. > :06:39.some of its appeal? Again, we will have to wait and see. All the
:06:39. > :06:42.evidence that has been collected by senior economists is that a
:06:42. > :06:49.university education as well as given a fantastic life changed
:06:49. > :06:53.experience, it also gives a good return on investment. Thank you
:06:53. > :07:00.both very much indeed. I'd like to hear from you on this.
:07:00. > :07:03.Maybe you've had results today, or know someone who has. Or perhaps
:07:03. > :07:07.you've had to go through clearing. How did you get on? Do get in touch.
:07:07. > :07:10.We'll have all the contact details coming up for you in just a moment.
:07:10. > :07:19.In a moment: Standing empty. The stolen statue
:07:20. > :07:23.which commemorates lost trawlermen may not be replaced until next year.
:07:23. > :07:26.It used to be something saved for retirement but the desire to grow
:07:26. > :07:28.your own fruit and veg has led to a growing demand for allotments. In
:07:29. > :07:33.East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire there are currently over 2,000
:07:33. > :07:36.people on a waiting list, 1,200 in Hull alone. But in one part of
:07:36. > :07:39.Lincolnshire, the demand for allotments is competing with the
:07:39. > :07:46.need for a new bypass, and it's causing some controversy with those
:07:46. > :07:51.who've spent years cultivating their crops. Correspondent Caroline
:07:51. > :07:57.Bilton reports. They've been tending to their
:07:57. > :07:59.vegetables on this allotment for decades. Jim has had a plot here
:07:59. > :08:09.for 45 years. But now he fears he and his veg
:08:09. > :08:12.will be forced to move on to make way for a new bypass. It is part of
:08:12. > :08:18.our heritage. They have already grabbed half of the allotment to
:08:18. > :08:23.put houses on. There is a waiting list for allotments, then to do
:08:23. > :08:26.away with than...! This is what they'll be making way
:08:26. > :08:28.for, the Spalding Western Relief Road. There are two options, but
:08:28. > :08:32.both go straight through the middle of Horseshoe Road Allotments. This
:08:32. > :08:36.is why it's needed. There are plans to build a rail freight hub, taking
:08:36. > :08:39.lorry traffic off the roads and onto the rail network. But it's a
:08:39. > :08:49.rail network that splits Spalding in two, so more rail traffic will
:08:49. > :08:50.
:08:50. > :08:54.mean greater delays at level crossings. I can understand them
:08:54. > :08:58.wanting a relief road, but we have a perfectly good one the other side
:08:58. > :09:07.of the allotments! It is called Broadway, and it is called Broadway
:09:07. > :09:11.for him reason. Why can't they just update that one? The only way to
:09:11. > :09:17.avoid the dump -- the only way to avoid the demolition of properties
:09:17. > :09:19.is to go through the allotments. It is a worse option to take away
:09:19. > :09:22.houses. We have to reduce demolition.
:09:22. > :09:24.The council says the allotment holders will be offered an
:09:24. > :09:28.alternative site and they're keen to hear people's views on the
:09:28. > :09:35.proposals. This may be a case where the humble allotment loses out over
:09:35. > :09:38.the need for future development. Get in touch if you've got a view
:09:38. > :09:45.on this one. Should a relief road take priority over these
:09:45. > :09:51.allotments? Have you got an allotment? Maybe you have been
:09:51. > :10:01.waiting for one. Could of should councils do more to support them?
:10:01. > :10:16.
:10:16. > :10:20.More needs to be done to ensure workers in our area have the right
:10:20. > :10:23.skills to fill up to 5,000 new jobs created by the green energy boom.
:10:23. > :10:28.That's according to the Minister for Cities, who's been visiting the
:10:28. > :10:31.site of the new Humber Enterprise Zone. Parts of Hull and North
:10:31. > :10:34.Lincolnshire will be covered by the zone, which will offer a range of
:10:34. > :10:44.incentives to attract companies associated with the offshore wind

:11:00. > :11:03.but the best human capital as well. We need to rise to the challenge.
:11:03. > :11:06.The Vulcan aircraft has withdrawn from a series of air shows this
:11:06. > :11:11.weekend, because of a technical problem. The plane used to be a
:11:11. > :11:14.familiar sight in the skies above Lincolnshire. Now the charity
:11:14. > :11:19.behind its return to flight say they've discovered a leak in its
:11:19. > :11:23.fuel tank. The first edition of the new weekly
:11:23. > :11:26.Scunthorpe Telegraph has gone on sale. It's changed from a daily
:11:26. > :11:29.paper to a weekly. Managers say it's because of falling sales and
:11:29. > :11:39.changing reading habits, but are hopeful the new paper will prove
:11:39. > :11:43.popular. We are very hopeful it will be a big success. Research has

:11:53. > :11:56.edition of the Weekly Telegraph here. Excellent publication. We

:11:59. > :12:07.until the new year to replace this statue, stolen from the waterfront
:12:07. > :12:15.in Hull last month. The sculpture Voyage was put up to commemorate
:12:15. > :12:18.the city's lost trawlermen. And it's thought it was pulled from its

:12:32. > :12:37.Burton reports. Hull City Council is working hard
:12:37. > :12:42.to replace the bronze sculpture that was taken. There is a statue
