:01:17. > :01:21.Yorkshire school to ban nuts from all packed lunches. Parents were
:01:21. > :01:27.told about the change of policy in a text message warning them that
:01:27. > :01:32.nuts must not be brought into Minster School in Beverley. It is
:01:32. > :01:38.just the latest school to introduce such a ban but it is prompting
:01:38. > :01:44.claims that this is a step too far. Our correspondent has been finding
:01:44. > :01:48.out more. This girl has only recently been
:01:48. > :01:52.diagnosed with a nut allergy and she is getting used to the special
:01:52. > :01:58.equipment that comes with it. Her mother has nothing but praise for
:01:59. > :02:03.the school which has had a ban on nuts for some years. They have been
:02:03. > :02:08.very supportive, and sometimes I have felt like I am being a pain,
:02:08. > :02:14.because I have been at the school, checking things are in place and
:02:14. > :02:22.they have the medications. It is not just at meal times that nuts
:02:22. > :02:28.are banned. The children are very creative and they do extract cities.
:02:28. > :02:35.We have the parents sending in things like empty cereal packets,
:02:35. > :02:40.but we ask them not to include anything that might have that nuts.
:02:40. > :02:44.One in 50 children are now estimated to suffer from a nut
:02:44. > :02:50.allergy and it is estimated that boys are 30% more likely than girls
:02:50. > :02:58.to suffer from the condition. It is also thought that children from
:02:58. > :03:03.affluent families have a higher rate of nut allergies.
:03:03. > :03:11.We have organised some reminder training...
:03:11. > :03:16.At Minster primary, the latest school to ban nut products in
:03:16. > :03:21.packed lunches. If my child suffered, I would be very happy for
:03:22. > :03:29.that warning to go out. They are just being careful, I do not have a
:03:29. > :03:36.problem with it. I think they need to relax all these things. Take
:03:36. > :03:40.individual cases. Nobody knows why food intolerances and allergies are
:03:40. > :03:45.on the increase, but it is certain that more schools will have to
:03:45. > :03:55.develop strategies to protect their pupils.

:03:57. > :04:04.Joining me is Mandy East. How common is it for nuts to be banned
:04:04. > :04:14.in schools? We do hear of schools who ban nuts. Particularly in
:04:14. > :04:14.
:04:14. > :04:19.schools where there are the younger children, year one classes. Given
:04:19. > :04:23.that you represent those at risk from severe allergic reactions,
:04:23. > :04:28.presumably you are pleased about this?
:04:28. > :04:33.We do not actually have a policy to introduce not bans across the board
:04:33. > :04:39.in schools. One of the reasons for this is that children can be
:04:39. > :04:45.allergic to a lot of substances, milk, fish, and you cannot ban
:04:45. > :04:51.everything that children may be allergic to. We also feel is lolls
:04:51. > :04:56.children into a false sense of safety. We cannot ever say that a
:04:56. > :05:00.school is 100% not free. So actually this could have a
:05:00. > :05:04.counter-productive effect? What the family and the child have
:05:04. > :05:09.to understand is that while the school is doing everything they can,
:05:09. > :05:14.been on allergic children's families will not be reading labels
:05:14. > :05:19.in the same way. It is sensible not to allow peanut butter sandwiches
:05:19. > :05:28.and lunch boxes, we are not sure that you can ban all nuts
:05:28. > :05:36.altogether. Thank you very much. I am interested to hear what parents
:05:36. > :05:41.think. You may think that parents should be able to send their

:07:08. > :07:13.this negativity and segregation. People come here to work and have a
:07:13. > :07:20.good life but they bring business to this country as well. They bring
:07:20. > :07:28.money. They have to say that -- see this from the other side. They just
:07:28. > :07:34.see that people come men to take a job from them, but it is not true.
:07:34. > :07:38.What have people said today? They would like to invite this
:07:38. > :07:44.journalist to Boston and spend some time here. They are not very
:07:44. > :07:50.pleased. I think it was totally missed directed and not really a
:07:50. > :07:56.reflection of what Boston is. The national media seem to have picked
:07:56. > :08:00.up on the fact that Boston is an immigration centre. Yes, we have a
:08:00. > :08:07.lot of immigrants, but in the majority of cases, people get on
:08:07. > :08:12.together. Is this a troubled town or a tranquil place? Nobody has
:08:12. > :08:22.denied there are problems but that provocative tome in the article
:08:22. > :08:27.

:08:53. > :08:57.the in commerce, are to blame for what has happened. I think this is
:08:57. > :09:01.the result of decisions made hundreds of miles away by
:09:01. > :09:08.politicians who do not care about Boston. Are you saying there are
:09:08. > :09:14.too many immigrants for that small town? When the numbers are so large,
:09:14. > :09:21.and they are very large in Boston, and with the language difference is
:09:21. > :09:25.so great, and indeed the cultural differences, people who have grown
:09:25. > :09:31.up in many cases in the Soviet empire in completely different
:09:31. > :09:38.cases -- situations. I think it does transform the place in a way
:09:38. > :09:43.that makes people uncomfortable, lead to one necessary hostility. We
:09:43. > :09:48.it do not want that to happen. you think that Boston is in a mess
:09:48. > :09:54.because of this cultural barrier? It is not for me to say as an
:09:54. > :09:59.outsider. With goodwill and hard work, people could overcome this. I
:09:59. > :10:05.hope that they do. I think it would be ridiculous to claim that this
:10:05. > :10:11.has not caused major problems for the people of the town. What are
:10:11. > :10:20.those problems? I just think it is very difficult for a town of that
:10:20. > :10:25.size to function, when there are two almost isolated communities
:10:25. > :10:31.within the same city limits. yet without those people, many of
:10:31. > :10:37.these shops which are open would be boarded up. Many of the
:10:38. > :10:44.employers'... I have said that in the article. But what compensation
:10:44. > :10:50.is that to the people of Boston who feel that the place they grew up in
:10:50. > :10:56.is no longer familiar to them? I think there is more to life than
:10:56. > :11:01.economics and money. Living in a place where you feel funnel their
:11:02. > :11:11.and where you know your fellow creatures is important. -- where
