:00:04. > :00:08.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. The headlines tonight.

:00:08. > :00:14.A pioneering new approach to child obesity in Lincolnshire.

:00:14. > :00:19.The plate that states how much our children should be eating. He would

:00:19. > :00:21.get half that sort of size. She would get a full one. That is all

:00:21. > :00:26.they get. Safety concerns after P&O announce

:00:26. > :00:31.plans to re-register its Hull passenger ferries abroad. All my

:00:31. > :00:37.life in Parliament, I have fought against flags of convenience. They

:00:37. > :00:39.are not as safe. Putting their skills to the test.

:00:39. > :00:42.Firefighters training in tough conditions ready for challenging

:00:42. > :00:51.rescues. The One Show's Matt Baker brings

:00:51. > :01:01.the latest leg of his epic rickshaw challenge to Lincolnshire.

:01:01. > :01:05.

:01:05. > :01:08.And will the sunshine still be with A radical scheme to cut child

:01:08. > :01:12.obesity is being pioneered in Lincolnshire. All four-year-olds

:01:12. > :01:18.starting school will be given a small plate to guide them as to how

:01:18. > :01:21.much food they really need. The county has more overweight and

:01:21. > :01:25.obese children than the national average, with more than 14% of 4

:01:25. > :01:29.and 5-year-old children being overweight. By the time they leave

:01:29. > :01:32.primary school, this figure has risen to more than 19%. NHS

:01:32. > :01:35.Lincolnshire is issuing 7,000 of the so-called "me size" plates this

:01:35. > :01:42.year to try to reverse this trend. Our correspondent, Vicky Johnson

:01:42. > :01:45.reports. These 4 and 5-year-olds at St

:01:45. > :01:55.John's Community Infants near Lincoln are being measured and

:01:55. > :01:55.

:01:55. > :01:58.weighed, like all new school starters across the country.

:01:58. > :02:01.They'll be monitored again when they leave at 11. Current figures

:02:01. > :02:03.show by then, around 20% of them will be overweight. Health

:02:03. > :02:11.officials are convinced that introducing these new small plates

:02:11. > :02:18.will help control both portion size and their weight. And there is a

:02:18. > :02:24.plate for you. This is about getting parents to think about how

:02:24. > :02:26.to give their children the right amount.

:02:26. > :02:33.But most parents we spoke to already realised that young

:02:33. > :02:43.children need much smaller portions. How do you gauge how much to give

:02:43. > :02:43.

:02:43. > :02:46.your child? I would give two slices to him. She would get a whole one,

:02:46. > :02:49.all topped up. These plates are just the latest

:02:49. > :02:52.initiative to tackle the obesity epidemic. There is now more funding

:02:52. > :02:54.for hot school meals, workshops on healthy eating and fit kid

:02:54. > :03:03.programmes across the region. Individual schools are doing their

:03:03. > :03:13.bit too. We try to keep that element of fun going throughout the

:03:13. > :03:15.

:03:15. > :03:18.school. Further Upper School, we have all sorts of equipment and

:03:18. > :03:24.innovative approaches. These little ones are slim, fit and

:03:24. > :03:30.raring to go. The challenge for us all is to help keep them that way.

:03:30. > :03:34.Tam Fry is from the National Obesity Forum and he joins me now.

:03:34. > :03:41.Tam, are these portion control plates a good idea? I think they

:03:41. > :03:46.are very good idea. What a Lincolnshire is doing is to try and

:03:46. > :03:54.blend of what happens at home with what happens at school. You can do

:03:54. > :03:59.all you can as cool -- at school, but then what happens at home?

:03:59. > :04:04.Giving the plate for the children to take home gives parents an idea.

:04:04. > :04:09.I thoroughly approve of. But all these years, parents have managed

:04:09. > :04:14.perfectly well. The greater proportion of mothers and fathers

:04:14. > :04:19.have managed. But there is a significant minority who really do

:04:19. > :04:26.not have a good idea of a child reading and how much it to give

:04:26. > :04:31.children. -- child to a reading. Should are the plays be given to

:04:31. > :04:36.every child or just the overweight ones? They should be given to every

:04:36. > :04:41.child, otherwise have there is a stigma attached. You may lose a

:04:41. > :04:46.little bit of money on it, but you when I read in the end because

:04:46. > :04:49.everyone is treated the same way. can almost hear some parents

:04:49. > :04:57.screaming at the television when they hear this. Can you imagine

:04:57. > :05:01.them doing that? It is the nanny state gone mad. People can scream

:05:01. > :05:06.at television sets as much as they like, but they have to understand

:05:06. > :05:12.that the schools and the NHS are doing this as good advice. They are

:05:12. > :05:17.not insisting that the plates are used. We think that these plates

:05:17. > :05:23.are perhaps more appropriate than the plates children might normally

:05:23. > :05:29.have, which could be large and full of food. Very interesting to talk

:05:29. > :05:35.to you. Thank you for joining us. And we are interested to know what

:05:35. > :05:45.you think about this one. Is it a good idea or a waste of money? Get

:05:45. > :05:57.

:05:57. > :06:00.In a moment. From lonely and isolated to

:06:00. > :06:03.confident and sociable. How a youth scheme supported by Children in

:06:03. > :06:06.Need is helping to bring teenagers out of their shell.

:06:06. > :06:09.The Hull MP Karl Turner has demanded an urgent meeting with the

:06:09. > :06:17.ferry company P & O after it decided to re-register two of its

:06:17. > :06:20.passenger ferries which sail out of the city's docks. The Pride of York

:06:20. > :06:25.and the Pride of Hull are currently UK registered, but will soon fly

:06:25. > :06:28.the flag of the Bahamas. The company says it's trying to save

:06:28. > :06:32.money on staff pay, but Mr Turner says he's worried about safety and

:06:32. > :06:39.the rights of workers. In a moment, we'll hear from him, but first

:06:39. > :06:43.here's our Business Correspondent Paul Murphy.

:06:43. > :06:48.The Daily arrival and departure of the ferries in Hull has been a

:06:48. > :06:53.common sight for more than 40 years. The impending changes that to most

:06:53. > :06:58.of the state are subtle but important. Many ferries will be

:06:58. > :07:08.registered, not in the UK, but in the Bahamas. It means that the

:07:08. > :07:09.

:07:09. > :07:15.company can avoid European employment law if. Under new

:07:15. > :07:25.European laws, P&O are required to pay all staff the same rate for the

:07:25. > :07:42.

:07:42. > :07:51.same job. In a statement, P&O said Take-off the pride that. It is not

:07:51. > :07:59.the pride of Hull. I spent all my see life fighting this sort of

:07:59. > :08:03.thing. People have died under these are flags of convenience ships.

:08:03. > :08:10.Maritime the unions believe it is bad news for British jobs.

:08:10. > :08:18.Government needs to look again at seafaring and British jobs. One of

:08:18. > :08:24.the consequences of not being on the British register means that P&O

:08:24. > :08:34.will not be under the tonnage tax register and it not duty-bound to

:08:34. > :08:35.

:08:35. > :08:43.train up British sailors. Concerns are already being expressed about

:08:43. > :08:52.the ethics of unequal pay. Hull MP Karl Turner says he's

:08:52. > :08:55.extremely concerned. Many people who live and work in my

:08:55. > :08:58.constituency will be affected by this. This is a blatant attempt by

:08:58. > :09:00.P&O Ferries to get round the employment legislation, long

:09:00. > :09:03.established employment laws, which protect workers. It is also an

:09:03. > :09:12.attempt to circumvent health and safety laws, which is very worrying

:09:12. > :09:17.to people who use those ferries. Different flags, it is commonplace,

:09:17. > :09:20.no big deal? It might well be commonplace, but the management who

:09:20. > :09:23.I have spoken to today, they have accepted this is an attempt to get

:09:23. > :09:32.around employment law and they are worried about increasing cost and

:09:32. > :09:36.wages bills. That is a massive concern to me. Are you saying that

:09:36. > :09:45.safety is at risk? Absolutely, I am saying that safety is potentially

:09:45. > :09:49.at risk. In 1987, the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster happened.

:09:49. > :09:52.We have learned a lot from that disaster since then. Lots of

:09:52. > :10:01.employment and health and safety legislation has found its way onto

:10:01. > :10:04.the statute book as a result of that. You say you do not want to be

:10:04. > :10:07.scare mongering, but you said today that you would not sail on one of

:10:07. > :10:10.these ferries if they were registered like this, you would not

:10:10. > :10:20.risk your safety. Isn't that irresponsible? It is not

:10:20. > :10:25.

:10:25. > :10:28.irresponsible, I mean what I have I have had reassurances from the

:10:28. > :10:31.management today that they do not intend to sack any workers, but I

:10:31. > :10:35.am concerned that this is about driving costs down which can only

:10:35. > :10:44.have one result. But we are trying to attract people to Hull, should

:10:44. > :10:47.they register in the Bahamas or move out of Hull? There is a ferry

:10:47. > :10:55.terminal in Hull, I doubt very much that P&O are planning to do

:10:55. > :11:01.anything but sail from Hull. But it is very concerning to me for the

:11:01. > :11:04.reasons that I have talked about. But P&O need to do all they can to

:11:04. > :11:14.survive. P&O told me that this is an attempt to get around employment

:11:14. > :11:16.

:11:16. > :11:26.laws. That is very worrying to me. Thank you very much indeed. Do you

:11:26. > :11:31.

:11:31. > :11:34.agree or disagree with those The girlfriend of a man who died

:11:34. > :11:36.after leaving a Lincoln nightclub has told an inquest that door staff

:11:36. > :11:39.ignored her warnings that he wasn't able to breathe. 23-year-old

:11:39. > :11:42.William Pleasants was removed by bouncers from the Engine Shed venue

:11:42. > :11:45.three years ago after getting into an argument. Victoria Nichol told

:11:45. > :11:48.the inquest in Lincoln that Mr Pleasants wasn't put into the

:11:48. > :11:58.recovery position until emergency services arrived at the scene. The

:11:58. > :12:01.

:12:01. > :12:05.More than 10 areas of the Court of Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire

:12:05. > :12:12.have been proposed for special protection from dredging, and

:12:12. > :12:17.pollution. The Government says it has had delays on advice.

:12:17. > :12:22.There were major hold ups during tonight's rush-hour as bomb

:12:22. > :12:28.disposal experts dealt with the suspect object. Dodington ward was

:12:28. > :12:33.closed after the object was uncovered. It was revealed to be

:12:33. > :12:37.scrap-metal. A 16-year-old from Hull says a

:12:37. > :12:44.charity funded by Children In Need has transformed her life. Rachel

:12:44. > :12:54.Lawson's attention deficit disorder led to a been bullied. That has

:12:54. > :12:59.

:13:00. > :13:06.changed. Thanks to visit Bransholme Community Arts Enterprise.

:13:07. > :13:14.I live near Kingswood. I used to get bullied down my street. I have

:13:14. > :13:24.not been out to place since I was nine. That made me feel bad because

:13:24. > :13:26.

:13:26. > :13:32.I felt I was isolated. When I was in year five, I was diagnosed with

:13:32. > :13:40.attention deficit disorder. I was treated like cannot weekend before

:13:40. > :13:47.that. It made me lose my confidence. It made everything like a living

:13:47. > :13:57.hell. I started going to a youth and media club at Bransholme

:13:57. > :13:58.

:13:58. > :14:05.Community Arts Enterprise. It has helped me so much. We do lots of

:14:05. > :14:12.photography and to make stuff. are we doing today? We have

:14:12. > :14:18.costumes. This benefits the K Irons in ways that are beyond what can be

:14:18. > :14:28.described. The kids who come here, this is the only social thing they

:14:28. > :14:28.

:14:28. > :14:33.do. I'm going to the club and it changes the way I feel. I do not

:14:33. > :14:43.have to worry about people thinking I am weird. Everyone here is the

:14:43. > :14:51.same. I have been able to meet new people. My confidence has built up.

:14:51. > :15:01.This club and the other clubs like it are really important. It helps

:15:01. > :15:11.them feel like a regular part of society. Her story and it is

:15:11. > :15:22.

:15:22. > :15:26.Still ahead, staying with Children In Need, a welcome for the one show

:15:26. > :15:36.presenter Matt Baker as he travels through Lincolnshire on his right

:15:36. > :16:12.

:16:12. > :16:20.shot challenge. Here is the apology. Is then

:16:20. > :16:30.appalled on the line? I heard that. What do you mean has she got it

:16:30. > :16:33.

:16:33. > :16:43.wrong? I got that or cast drawn. They headline it is one of variable

:16:43. > :16:48.

:16:48. > :16:56.cloud. Sunshine will be fake. After days of dark skies, we had some sun.

:16:56. > :17:03.That has swept across all parts. I am sure we will not get it right

:17:03. > :17:12.tomorrow but we will try our best. This dry area is bringing moister

:17:12. > :17:22.and that is causing cloud to redevelop. It is colder than last

:17:22. > :17:41.

:17:41. > :17:45.The sun will rise at 739. It will be a mixed bag in the morning. The

:17:45. > :17:55.cloud will come and go but there is every chance we will get these

:17:55. > :18:06.

:18:06. > :18:14.breaks from time to time. Thursday looks nice. Quite a bit of sunshine

:18:14. > :18:24.coming through. It was the clouds called for going in the wrong

:18:24. > :18:27.

:18:27. > :18:35.place? The weather goes wrong.

:18:35. > :18:45.Thanks for being in touch about the reduction of speed limits. Many

:18:45. > :19:15.

:19:15. > :19:19.villages will see speed limits drop Thank you for doors.

:19:19. > :19:27.Firefighters from Immingham have been testing their rescue skills at

:19:27. > :19:36.a quarry. They have been practising that more unusual scenarios

:19:36. > :19:41.involving water, mud and drops. Hard work and teamwork are vital

:19:41. > :19:48.during a rescue but it is not often that these men get the chance to

:19:48. > :19:52.practise saving lives. This team of fire fighters are using the site to

:19:52. > :19:59.try out their rescue skills and a number of situations. We are faced

:19:59. > :20:07.with lots of challenging muddy areas around the Humber. There are

:20:07. > :20:17.lots -- it there is lot of mud around. This is a or by four of raw

:20:17. > :20:18.

:20:18. > :20:23.track. It is rough terrain. The fire fighters say these are perfect

:20:23. > :20:28.surroundings to test their skills. It gives us the chance to work in

:20:28. > :20:34.realistic environments. You get a sense of satisfaction that we eat

:20:34. > :20:44.you are trained to the best of your ability. These are the scenarios we

:20:44. > :20:44.

:20:44. > :20:49.find people trapped in. This is Utopia. Training like this usually

:20:49. > :20:53.does not come cheap and with a tightening budget, they would not

:20:53. > :20:59.be able to afford it. The company that run the site has offered it

:20:59. > :21:04.for free for will stop we are offering something back to the

:21:04. > :21:13.locals by training for the fire brigade. It is hoped that the next

:21:13. > :21:17.time someone needs this help, this rescue service will be prepared.

:21:17. > :21:22.Yorkshire cricket has sacked three of its long-serving coaches

:21:22. > :21:27.following relegation from Division One. Martyn Moxon survives with the

:21:27. > :21:35.backing of the board and his team will be boosted by the addition of

:21:35. > :21:42.Australian Jason Gillespie. They have given me their support. I

:21:42. > :21:48.thank them for that support. There is no one more disappointed by has

:21:48. > :21:54.been relegated. Hull City say they plan to issue a statement about

:21:54. > :22:00.their manager's position this evening. It is expected to confirm

:22:00. > :22:04.net Barmby as caretaker manager Anthony offer some clarity on Nigel

:22:04. > :22:09.Pearson's move. The one show presenter Matt Baker

:22:09. > :22:14.brought his epic Children In Need right shot Challenge tour part of

:22:14. > :22:24.the world today. This morning, he arrived in East Yorkshire before

:22:24. > :22:25.

:22:25. > :22:31.heading to Lincolnshire. Through gritted teeth, Matt Baker

:22:31. > :22:41.is making steady progress. His challenge briefly stopping or

:22:41. > :22:41.

:22:41. > :22:48.unimportant break in Goole. It has been the most difficult day of the

:22:48. > :22:58.challenge so far. Here when a few familiar faces, his grandfather and

:22:58. > :22:59.

:22:59. > :23:07.his sister who lives in Hull. feeling that fatigue now. If he

:23:07. > :23:15.says he will do something, he will do it. If he is on crutches, he

:23:15. > :23:24.will make it. Every day has had challenges, the miles, injuries. I

:23:24. > :23:31.have been up and down. Pushing two extremes is what Matt Baker is all

:23:31. > :23:41.about. As a gymnast, he represented England. As a Blue Peter presenter,

:23:41. > :23:41.

:23:41. > :23:49.he broke records. On strictly, he danced his way to the final. As in

:23:49. > :23:56.Goole this morning, supporters have been out in force. It is fantastic.

:23:56. > :24:00.He can consume 9,000 calories a day and look like that, I am jealous.

:24:00. > :24:09.The support is unbelievable. People have been lining the streets from

:24:09. > :24:15.here to end borough and have been throwing money at me. Along the way,

:24:15. > :24:21.Matt has collected passengers. It makes the right shop feel like the

:24:21. > :24:31.brakes are on. He is now heading for Lincolnshire and the flatter

:24:31. > :24:32.

:24:32. > :24:39.landscape should prove easier. Matter is expected in linking later.

:24:39. > :24:45.Where is he? He should be here by now. It has been an incredibly

:24:46. > :24:50.difficult day. We have heard he is in a bit of pain. This challenge is

:24:50. > :24:57.proving more difficult than many people had got. When he arrives,

:24:58. > :25:06.there is a big crowd here. He is our national president and we

:25:06. > :25:15.cannot wait to greet him. What you think about what he has done?

:25:15. > :25:19.amount he has raised his amazing. Let us try to make a million.

:25:19. > :25:26.is confident he can make that Television Centre on Friday. He has

:25:26. > :25:36.already raised almost half a million times. As he continues to

:25:36. > :25:40.

:25:40. > :25:46.more or, he will no doubt be hoping to raise more. Let us hope they do

:25:46. > :25:50.not have to wait too long. A teenager from Scunthorpe has made

:25:50. > :25:55.it through to the final of Australia a's version of the X

:25:55. > :26:02.Factor. Reece Mastin moved to Adelaide with his parents 10 years

:26:02. > :26:12.ago. He is now through to the finals which will be held on Monday

:26:12. > :26:12.

:26:12. > :26:17.night. Good luck to them. Let us have a recap.

:26:18. > :26:22.A backlash against the rise of fuel prices, more than 100 MPs backed a

:26:22. > :26:32.petition. That the plague that states how

:26:32. > :26:34.

:26:34. > :26:39.much our children should eat. Top temperatures of 11 Celsius. Our

:26:39. > :26:49.response coming in on that radical scheme to shut -- Cup Children's of

:26:49. > :26:59.

:26:59. > :27:09.Another says it is not be any use telling children what to eat. It is

:27:09. > :27:14.the parents' fault. It needs to start pre-school.
