:00:07. > :00:13.Good evening. Welcome to BBC Look North.

:00:13. > :00:18.The headlines: As many struggle to pay for Christmas, as calls for all

:00:18. > :00:22.children to be taught personal finance lessons in school.

:00:22. > :00:26.Debt is a fact of life, we have got to school people are so they know

:00:26. > :00:36.what they're getting into. Are our councils ready for the cold

:00:36. > :00:38.

:00:38. > :00:44.weather? Also tonight, unbeaten in 10 games,

:00:44. > :00:48.Grimsby Town look to use the FA Cup to continue their good form.

:00:48. > :00:54.And back home, the Cleethorpes sailor whose internet video has had

:00:54. > :01:04.more than 2 million hits. And a touch of the wet and windy is

:01:04. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:11.tonight, a very wet and unsettled Children should be taught how to

:01:11. > :01:16.manage money from the age of five to stop them getting into financial

:01:16. > :01:21.trouble as adults. That is the finding of a report written for the

:01:21. > :01:28.Government by the Brigg and Goole MP, Andrew Percy. More than 100,000

:01:28. > :01:38.people have signed an online position supporting the idea and

:01:38. > :01:41.256 MPs are in favour. Two weeks till Christmas and here

:01:41. > :01:45.on the High Street there are growing concerns that many will be

:01:45. > :01:51.left with massive New Year debts. At what age, though, should we

:01:51. > :01:56.start learning how to manage our finances? Andrew Percy, the MP for

:01:56. > :01:59.Brigg and Goole, believes the earlier the better. As a student he

:01:59. > :02:04.fell into serious debt and now wants to see financial management

:02:04. > :02:08.as part of the school curriculum. Rather than expecting kids to leave

:02:08. > :02:13.school understanding algebra and calculus, we should be expecting

:02:13. > :02:18.them to leave school knowing how to make informed financial decisions

:02:18. > :02:20.which are ever more complex these days. According to a recent survey,

:02:20. > :02:25.nearly 60% of the British population say they are worried

:02:25. > :02:30.about their current level of debt. Nearly half of the population

:02:30. > :02:40.struggled to make it to pay day and 32% of those who took out a pay-day

:02:40. > :02:40.

:02:40. > :02:44.loan could not pay it back. At Hull's Wilberforce College today

:02:44. > :02:48.the students supported the idea in principle. Some were not sure if

:02:48. > :02:53.school was the right place to learn about controlling debt. May be a

:02:53. > :02:58.lot of the teachers are in the same position themselves. I think it is

:02:58. > :03:03.a good idea, especially in the current economic climate.

:03:03. > :03:10.amount of GCSEs people are sitting this -- these days, you would have

:03:10. > :03:15.to take something away and you have to ask what is more valuable.

:03:15. > :03:20.this primary school, parents think it is a good idea. More awareness

:03:20. > :03:23.from an earlier age and as much as possible when they are older.

:03:23. > :03:29.think it is a good idea, teaching the kids about responsibilities for

:03:29. > :03:33.money and looking after their futures. For my kids not to get in

:03:33. > :03:40.debt it's like other people have with credit cards. I would not one

:03:40. > :03:45.that for them. Enabling young people to avoid the

:03:45. > :03:50.financial pitfalls now being experienced by an older generation.

:03:50. > :03:55.Just before the programme, I spoke to Martin Lewis who set up the

:03:55. > :04:01.Money Saving Expert website, he is lending his support to the campaign.

:04:01. > :04:05.I asked him why a. We are a financially illiterate nation. We

:04:05. > :04:12.have just had a debt imbued financial crisis. I have been

:04:12. > :04:16.dealing with campaigns like financial protection insurance when

:04:16. > :04:21.9 million have been no salt. What we want is responsible borrowers

:04:21. > :04:25.and consumers. But unless they have the understanding of how to be good

:04:25. > :04:30.consumers, none of this will work. It is a national disgrace that for

:04:30. > :04:34.21 years we have a educated away youth into debt when they go to

:04:34. > :04:38.university but never educated them about debt. We have lost the stigma

:04:38. > :04:42.of borrowing that have never replaced it with explaining to

:04:42. > :04:48.people how to borrow, when to borrow, how to take that judgment.

:04:48. > :04:52.We have one of the most complex consumer economies in the world,

:04:52. > :04:57.companies spend billions of pounds every year on teaching their staff

:04:57. > :05:02.to sell and that consumers do not get any buyers' training. Schools

:05:02. > :05:07.already have a tour nine subjects to teach, should this task be given

:05:07. > :05:10.to them instead of parents? We need to break a cycle of bad debts and

:05:11. > :05:15.financial illiteracy in this country is so asking the parents to

:05:15. > :05:20.do it unfortunately will not work. What we are trying to do is work

:05:20. > :05:25.within the existing curriculum without loading any more work on a

:05:25. > :05:30.hard-working teachers, we have mass, masses going to be divided into two

:05:30. > :05:35.subjects, within mass we would have a new unit called Financial

:05:35. > :05:41.numeracy. It looks at the building blocks, the numbers about finance.

:05:41. > :05:48.It is not just about APR and compound interest, it is about life

:05:48. > :05:52.decisions, so that would go into PSHE, and then we would combine the

:05:52. > :05:56.two subjects in a smooth, easy way. It would be a radical change to the

:05:56. > :06:03.way kids were good at money. talk about a PR, but there are many

:06:03. > :06:09.of us who went to school who cannot do APR, that does not reflect very

:06:09. > :06:16.well on the schools that taught us of mass. It is not maps, it is

:06:16. > :06:19.finance, it is a relatively complex equation. Understanding that,

:06:19. > :06:26.understanding there is no simplicity to APR, understanding

:06:26. > :06:36.that if I said lend me 20 this week and then in give me a pint,

:06:36. > :06:37.

:06:37. > :06:44.that would be 143,000 % APR. I think some parents might have

:06:44. > :06:54.something to say about that one. Who should be teaching our children

:06:54. > :07:08.

:07:08. > :07:13.Should they be taught at primary school or are there other things to

:07:13. > :07:19.learn? What you think about what Martin said about parents there?

:07:19. > :07:24.Look forward to hearing from you. In a moment: Managers at Lincoln

:07:24. > :07:29.Cathedral say there is no alarm over its inclusion on a list of at-

:07:29. > :07:33.risk buildings. A nursery in Lincolnshire has been

:07:33. > :07:39.set on fire by an arsonist. The Little Lambs Day Nursery in

:07:39. > :07:43.Gainsborough was badly damaged in the fire last night. The police and

:07:43. > :07:47.fire service are investigating. A mother and child have escaped

:07:47. > :07:51.unhurt from a house fire in East at Hull. Firefighters say an

:07:51. > :07:54.electrical fault on a laptop computer is most likely the cause

:07:54. > :07:59.of the fire which broke out in the living room. The mother and child

:07:59. > :08:04.were asleep upstairs at the time and were woken by smoke alarms.

:08:04. > :08:09.am gutted, happy that everyone is safe, though. Obviously, really

:08:09. > :08:14.gutted about the house, but that can be mended, and we are safe, me

:08:14. > :08:21.and my daughter are saved, so that is the main thing. This is a

:08:21. > :08:25.devastating reoccurrence from the family but it is good news in that

:08:25. > :08:33.simple actions have meant that they have got out safely. I would heed

:08:33. > :08:37.everybody else to take that advice. A year ago many parts of of the

:08:37. > :08:42.country were brought to a standstill for days on end in the

:08:42. > :08:46.sub-zero temperatures. To avoid a repeat of grit and salt shortages,

:08:46. > :08:49.local councils in our area have brought in thousands of tons of

:08:49. > :08:53.extra before the cold weather arrives.

:08:53. > :09:03.Two years of some of the worst winter weather on record. Snow-

:09:03. > :09:03.

:09:03. > :09:08.covered roads and icy pavements causing an incident and injury.

:09:08. > :09:13.lot of the work would be for care homes and the Primary Care Trust

:09:13. > :09:18.and also for hospitals, we did quite a bit of work with Hull Royal

:09:18. > :09:25.Infirmary, moving people to and from. A lot of that is to do with

:09:25. > :09:29.key worker movements. This winter, councils say it will not be a case

:09:29. > :09:34.of third time lucky, simply better preparation. Some have invested in

:09:34. > :09:39.new facilities and others are empowering their communities to do

:09:39. > :09:44.more if it cold weather strikes. have initiatives to have snow

:09:44. > :09:48.wardens in each of the parishes. They will act as our eyes and ears

:09:48. > :09:53.and develop priorities within those parishes and serve those

:09:53. > :10:01.communities directly. At least three councils have increased grit

:10:01. > :10:05.supplies this season. Hull city council is up by 2000 tonnes. And

:10:05. > :10:10.Lincolnshire is up by 11,000 to move them to more than 40,000

:10:10. > :10:15.tonnes. On top of that, the East Riding Council has increased its

:10:15. > :10:20.storage capacity as well. The the major change we have made is to

:10:20. > :10:24.increase our stock level I just around 3,000 tonnes. It gives us a

:10:24. > :10:29.little bit extra storage capacity given that we have got 1000 square

:10:29. > :10:33.miles to cover and we can use thousands of tons of salt every

:10:33. > :10:37.week. It is increasing that resilience a little bit for the

:10:37. > :10:43.East Riding. This time last year, gritters were working around the

:10:43. > :10:47.clock. But even if our temperatures to drop in a few days' time,

:10:47. > :10:50.councils insist they will cope but they are hoping that local

:10:50. > :10:55.communities will come together in areas where help simply is not

:10:55. > :11:01.available. Police have confirmed the names of

:11:01. > :11:05.two people who died on an East Yorkshire road. 28-year-old Julie

:11:05. > :11:11.McDougall and a Terrence Murray who was 48 both died when their car

:11:11. > :11:15.overturned at around 5am on Saturday morning. Conditions were

:11:15. > :11:19.described as a treacherous. Two other passengers were injured.

:11:19. > :11:23.A 19-year-old woman is in a serious condition in hospital after being

:11:23. > :11:26.knocked down by a car in Cleethorpes. It happened in a car

:11:26. > :11:29.park of the High Street in the early hours of yesterday.

:11:29. > :11:34.Humberside Police are investigating whether the woman had already been

:11:34. > :11:38.struck by another vehicle. It will take 15 years just to stop

:11:38. > :11:42.the roof leaking at Lincoln Cathedral. But officials there are

:11:42. > :11:45.wondering how they will raise millions of pounds every year for

:11:45. > :11:51.repairs in these difficult economic times. A visit by Prince Charles

:11:51. > :11:55.last month has put the cathedral's recently acquired at risk status

:11:55. > :11:59.back into the spotlight. It is the only cathedral in the country to be

:11:59. > :12:04.given the label. It has been called the finest

:12:04. > :12:08.Gothic building in Europe, but at more than nine -- more than 900

:12:09. > :12:17.years old, main Tain in Lincoln Cathedral is a DIY a nightmare. It

:12:17. > :12:21.is hoped the at risk label will help. There is no risk that the

:12:21. > :12:25.cathedral is about to fall down. It is a rallying call for everyone to

:12:25. > :12:32.invest in the future of these vitally important historic places.

:12:32. > :12:37.The list of jobs is lengthy. There are turrets to fix and Great Tom,

:12:37. > :12:42.the main bell, has been silenced while its springs are mended.

:12:42. > :12:46.does not surprise me because it is a very great, Auld, a huge building

:12:46. > :12:52.with a lot of fine carvings. So, no, it must be like painting the Forth

:12:52. > :12:56.Bridge. It does surprise me now you have told me it costs 50,000 a

:12:56. > :13:01.week to keep going. I had never thought about the financial side of

:13:01. > :13:06.it, really. Last month, Royal help was enlisted to head up money

:13:06. > :13:11.raising efforts. Every repair is a specialist job, adding up to a

:13:11. > :13:15.yearly bill of millions. We need to continue, year-on-year, to raise

:13:15. > :13:20.funds to do the repair and maintenance. We do not feel that

:13:20. > :13:24.Lincoln Cathedral is ever going to be without scaffolding. For its

:13:24. > :13:31.profile, the type of stone, and how decorative it is, we will have an

:13:31. > :13:41.ongoing restoration programme. label may mean that this Gothic

:13:41. > :13:44.

:13:44. > :13:48.wonder can be protected in the We wish the fundraisers well. Still

:13:48. > :13:56.ahead tonight: Perfect 10 - Grimsby Town stretch out their unbeaten run

:13:56. > :13:59.and look for glory in the FA Cup. Home at last - a Cleethorpes sailor

:13:59. > :14:09.returns for Christmas after nine months at sea and two million

:14:09. > :14:16.

:14:16. > :14:20.If you have a photograph that you're proud of, send it down.

:14:20. > :14:30.Tonight was taking at the height of the storm last Thursday in

:14:30. > :14:30.

:14:30. > :14:36.Bridlington. Another picture tomorrow night. Good evening.

:14:36. > :14:46.are you? Several people writing to me to tell me you were on the radio

:14:46. > :14:48.

:14:48. > :14:58.at 7am this morning. We send a search party it for you it and you

:14:58. > :15:01.

:15:01. > :15:04.Quite unsettled with the rain in the west of our region. That will

:15:04. > :15:12.clear later tonight but with sunny intervals and scattered showers

:15:12. > :15:18.tomorrow. One or two of the showers could be particularly cold.

:15:18. > :15:22.Normally, south-westerly winds are mild but there is this area of low

:15:22. > :15:28.pressure. It will be chilly with some welcome rain across

:15:28. > :15:36.Lincolnshire. There is still a drought order in place so this will

:15:36. > :15:41.be useful. Within the next hour or so, everywhere will be wet and

:15:41. > :15:50.windy. Winds could reach 50 miles per hour with some locally heavy

:15:50. > :16:00.rain. Most places will become die at around 5am tomorrow.

:16:00. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:11.Temperatures will reach the Celsius. It will be a cold start with strong

:16:11. > :16:16.south-westerly wind back. A few scattered showers coming through

:16:16. > :16:21.from time to time. One or two will be on the wintry side with some

:16:21. > :16:26.hail and sleet. There will be plenty of dry and bright weather in

:16:26. > :16:30.between. Top temperatures will be academic because there is a

:16:30. > :16:35.significant wind-chill tomorrow. Top temperatures around five

:16:35. > :16:45.Celsius. An early warning in force and a lot of uncertainty with the

:16:45. > :16:47.

:16:47. > :16:51.potential for Severe weather on You had a lie-in and we want to

:16:51. > :16:54.know... You do not want to know. Lots of emails, texts and tweets

:16:54. > :16:58.after Friday's show. Figures showed North East Lincolnshire in the top

:16:58. > :17:01.ten places in the country for smoking. Almost a quarter of

:17:01. > :17:11.pregnant women in the area carry on smoking - twice the national

:17:11. > :17:21.average. In some parts of Grimsby, nearly half the population smoke.

:17:21. > :17:52.

:17:52. > :17:55.They've spent years in the doldrums but there are signs Grimsby Town

:17:55. > :18:01.are undergoing a revival. Grimsby, who lost their league status two

:18:01. > :18:03.years ago, are unbeaten in 10 games. Now, as our sports reporter Simon

:18:03. > :18:13.Clark explains, a prestigious FA cup game with Sheffield United

:18:13. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:19.awaits them if they beat Salisbury tomorrow.

:18:19. > :18:23.Bright, crisp, clear and sunny. A perfect way to describe the current

:18:24. > :18:30.feeling for Grimsby Town. The orange bits are the spell have also

:18:30. > :18:40.had some say in their fortunes. He is catching the eye as he showed in

:18:40. > :18:42.

:18:42. > :18:47.his recent 7-0 demolition of If we playwright, the gaffer will

:18:47. > :18:53.look towards this their game at Sheffield United. The fans will

:18:53. > :18:57.want to play against bedsides again. It would be nice to take them back

:18:57. > :19:02.and give them some memories for today as a poster only yesterday.

:19:02. > :19:08.Over the years, we have reported on Grimsby town's decline and fall.

:19:08. > :19:13.Today, we are finally getting a sense that this side can look

:19:13. > :19:20.forward to a better tomorrow. Grimsby used to play Sheffield

:19:20. > :19:25.United on a regular basis. One expert says, they might again.

:19:25. > :19:33.These matches have brought a bit of stability. They brought their own

:19:33. > :19:38.players in the summer. They're playing more the way they wanted.

:19:38. > :19:45.Cleethorpes's opinion on the Mafia's was debated. There is some

:19:45. > :19:49.improvement. Hopefully they can pull it off. They are doing well in

:19:49. > :19:54.the last couple of results have been brilliant. This down develops

:19:54. > :20:00.many youngsters in then you do not see them. If Grimsby Town had the

:20:00. > :20:03.youngsters playing, I would watch. The team has to win some hearts and

:20:03. > :20:07.minds but there are on the right track. Hull City are fifth in the

:20:07. > :20:10.Championship after beating Coventry City. Nick Barmby has now won four

:20:10. > :20:13.of his six games since taking charge. Scunthorpe United lost

:20:13. > :20:23.again at home and face a Christmas near the League One relegation zone.

:20:23. > :20:23.

:20:23. > :20:27.Kate Sweeting reports. Hull's revival under the Nick

:20:27. > :20:32.Barmby continued with victory over bottom-of-the-table Coventry. The

:20:32. > :20:37.only goal of the game came on the 60 minute mark. Nick Barmby said he

:20:37. > :20:41.was pleased with his team's overall performance. We knew it would be a

:20:41. > :20:47.difficult game and Coventry around the position they do not want to be

:20:47. > :20:51.in so it would be a scrappy game. I thought we dealt with it well and

:20:51. > :20:57.the attitude and commitment of the players was good even though it was

:20:57. > :21:02.not the greatest of games. Sometimes you have to win ugly.

:21:02. > :21:08.League One, Scunthorpe United were defeated 2-1. They took an early

:21:08. > :21:13.lead. Parallel equalised with this low shot into the far corner.

:21:13. > :21:16.Scunthorpe lost out on a point thanks to a late winner.

:21:16. > :21:21.Former Scunthorpe United boss Brian Laws embarked on a new career

:21:21. > :21:24.tonight. He was the guest presenter on BBC Radio Humberside's popular

:21:24. > :21:34.evening show Sportstalk. Among the topics under discussion was the

:21:34. > :21:34.

:21:35. > :21:37.plight of his former side. They have had a lot of problems over the

:21:37. > :21:40.last year and they are in a transitional period and that is

:21:40. > :21:43.tough. I still believe, and I have seen the team, they're good enough

:21:43. > :21:46.to stay up. The draw's been made for the second

:21:46. > :21:49.round of the FA trophy with three of our teams involved. Boston

:21:49. > :21:53.United will travel south to Dartford. Grimsby Town have a home

:21:53. > :22:01.tie against with Hornchurch or Farnborough. And Lincoln City

:22:02. > :22:06.welcome Carshalton Athletic to Sincil Bank. The games will be

:22:06. > :22:08.played on the 14th January. Since the digital switchover in

:22:08. > :22:11.August, some viewers in South Yorkshire, especially around

:22:11. > :22:13.Sheffield and Doncaster, have been receiving this edition of Look

:22:13. > :22:17.North, rather than your local version presented by Harry Gration

:22:17. > :22:21.and Christa Ackroyd. It's to do with the power of the boosted

:22:21. > :22:29.digital signals. While we're delighted to welcome you as viewers,

:22:29. > :22:32.there are a number of things you can try if you wish to retune. You

:22:32. > :22:34.can look through your on-screen TV guide, you might find Look North

:22:44. > :22:54.top box. And Digital UK can offer you information on their helpline.

:22:54. > :23:04.

:23:04. > :23:07.From Christmas trees to nativity scenes - there are many things

:23:07. > :23:10.you'd expect to see in Beverley Minster during the festive season.

:23:10. > :23:13.But this week, a 40-foot long model train set is making the historic

:23:14. > :23:16.building its home. It's part of the campaign to reopen the Beverley to

:23:48. > :23:51.The crew of HMS Ocean recorded the Christmas film at the end of

:23:54. > :23:59.Well, today, Jade Fraser visited her local school to thank them for

:24:43. > :24:47.It is mad to come home when people recognise me. It is such a small

:24:51. > :24:54.she's even got some fan mail. At 21, Jade's already seen much of the

:25:23. > :25:26.The celebration video has sent that feeling round the world. Even

:26:05. > :26:12.As many struggle in our area to pay for Christmas, there are calls for

:26:12. > :26:16.all children to be taught personal finance lessons in schools. We can

:26:16. > :26:20.talk about responsible lending and responsible companies, but what we

:26:20. > :26:23.really want is responsible borrowers and consumers. Unless

:26:23. > :26:27.they have the education and understanding of how to be good

:26:27. > :26:29.consumers, none of this will work. Tomorrow's weather: Cold and very

:27:16. > :27:22.Martin says it is not the parents job because they will not do it

:27:22. > :27:25.right. Another says supply schools are
