:00:06. > :00:09.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. The headlines tonight...

:00:09. > :00:19.More than 300 hundred jobs are under threat as food factory plans

:00:19. > :00:19.

:00:19. > :00:26.to close in Grimsby. We went into a meeting and they were given 90

:00:26. > :00:29.days' notice. I have not very optimistic, but you just have to

:00:29. > :00:31.keep your chin up. Old tonight, the headteacher

:00:31. > :00:35.warning about students being left behind, as qualifications change.

:00:35. > :00:43.A severe weather warning is in place as our area prepares for more

:00:43. > :00:46.snow. He yes, Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire could be a the brunt of

:00:46. > :00:56.that snore tomorrow night. And find out why honouring

:00:56. > :00:57.

:00:57. > :01:02.Grantham's most famous daughter is More than 300 jobs are under threat

:01:02. > :01:05.at a frozen food factory in North East Lincolnshire. Staff at Kerry

:01:05. > :01:09.Foods have been told its site in Grimsby could close at the end of

:01:09. > :01:19.April. It will bring the number of jobs lost in the frozen food

:01:19. > :01:21.

:01:21. > :01:27.industry in the area in the last year to 500. A cold winter day has

:01:27. > :01:33.been especially bad for the workforce at Kerry Foods. A 90 day

:01:33. > :01:38.consultation period about all the jobs now begins. In reality,

:01:38. > :01:47.everyone will spend the coming months overshadowed by the terrible

:01:47. > :01:54.prospect of unemployment. A lot of people think that they a bit too

:01:54. > :02:04.old to get on and plot to get unemployed again. -- to get

:02:04. > :02:06.

:02:06. > :02:16.employed again. We were told about this 90 day period. We will

:02:16. > :02:19.

:02:19. > :02:25.continue to explore all possible options. The Kerry Foods

:02:25. > :02:35.organisation employs 9,000 people nationwide. It only opened in

:02:35. > :02:36.

:02:36. > :02:44.Grimsby last year. The frozen-food market is a death in a difficult

:02:44. > :02:50.place that the moment. If there is a scrap of positive news, it is

:02:50. > :02:57.this some people in this market in Grimsby are expanding and hiring

:02:57. > :03:04.people. We are still looking to expand and there are other

:03:04. > :03:09.companies looking to come in. Council task force has now been set

:03:09. > :03:17.up to redeploy a the people who may be made redundant.

:03:17. > :03:27.Austin Mitchell is the Labour MP for Great Grimsby and joins me.

:03:27. > :03:34.

:03:34. > :03:39.said that this looks like a panic measure. What do you mean? Suddenly,

:03:40. > :03:49.the people suddenly get told this without any notice. It is just not

:03:50. > :03:52.

:03:52. > :03:58.good enough. For a G think is going on? Well, I have no idea. This

:03:58. > :04:06.company only set up a year ago, and there will be a worry that they

:04:06. > :04:16.have simply come in to do some asset stripping. And this is meant

:04:16. > :04:20.to be a growth area, frozen food? Yes, because it frozen food is

:04:20. > :04:25.cheaper, it is supposed to be a good area to be in that in times of

:04:25. > :04:35.the recession. But of course, supermarkets are driving down the

:04:35. > :04:41.margins for the companies. What can you and the local council do now?

:04:41. > :04:47.We will certainly do our best to fight this as best as we can.

:04:48. > :04:54.we will also help, should it come to pass, we will certainly come to

:04:54. > :05:02.help the people find other jobs. We are also looking for the local

:05:02. > :05:06.government to extend the Enterprise Zone. We are going to face further

:05:06. > :05:16.competition and we shall be asking the business department what they

:05:16. > :05:18.can also do to help. Headteachers in Grimsby are warning

:05:18. > :05:21.that many young people will struggle to find work because the

:05:21. > :05:24.government says some subjects are less important than nul are. --

:05:24. > :05:34.than others. They say qualifications in skills such as

:05:34. > :05:37.

:05:37. > :05:44.engineering are just as important The these students in Grimsby are

:05:44. > :05:52.working towards their Diploma in performing arts. It is comely worth

:05:52. > :05:57.the equivalent of four GCSEs, but what good is it in later life?

:05:57. > :06:07.has given us great experience of putting our owner sure. We have to

:06:07. > :06:11.sort out the sound, the lighting, the front of house people. Certain

:06:11. > :06:15.qualifications will now not carry the same weight as other subject.

:06:15. > :06:22.At the moment, some volcano vocational qualifications can be

:06:22. > :06:29.worth up to 6 g ESE East, but the government recommends that over

:06:30. > :06:36.3,000 subjects get reduced to just 125. Otherwise, they will not count

:06:36. > :06:41.in school league tables. I've thing that children have been lied to.

:06:41. > :06:48.They had been told that things would be worth five GCE SEs and

:06:48. > :06:53.they are not. The be guess criticism here is the reason to

:06:53. > :06:57.downgrade the Engineering Vocational qualification. It is

:06:57. > :07:04.when thousands of jobs could be created in the green energy sector

:07:04. > :07:08.in the Humber. At this time, we have to be looking out what the

:07:08. > :07:16.local industry has to offer in terms of employment for our local

:07:16. > :07:24.youngsters. It is going to be very hard for other people who are not

:07:24. > :07:27.in any sort of training once they leave school. They are planning to

:07:27. > :07:36.former Lord lobby group to as the gunman to look again at this

:07:36. > :07:39.decision. -- to ask the government. And or this subject will be debated

:07:39. > :07:43.on this weekend's Sunday Politics at 11.00am on BBC One. Guests

:07:43. > :07:53.include Hull East MP Karl Turner. In a moment, Skegness on TV - the

:07:53. > :07:53.

:07:53. > :07:57.advertising campaign telling us to holiday up home. -- at home. It is

:07:57. > :08:02.a competitive world. Every other country is trying to seduce

:08:02. > :08:04.holidaymakers away. We need to combat that.

:08:04. > :08:07.See severe weather warnings have been issued across East Yorkshire

:08:08. > :08:10.and Lincolnshire over the next 24 hours. This weekend is set to be

:08:10. > :08:17.the coldest spell of winter, with widespread snow expected across all

:08:17. > :08:20.parts. Temperatures will fall as low as minus 6 tonight. Poll will

:08:20. > :08:22.be here with a full forecast in a few moments, but after the

:08:22. > :08:30.disruption caused by last year's weather, local authorities and

:08:30. > :08:33.highways officials have stepped up their preparations.

:08:33. > :08:36.It is the new centre -- nerve centre, responsible for keeping

:08:36. > :08:39.Lincolnshire's roads passable. By alongside organising gritting

:08:39. > :08:49.patrols, officials here have another job. Meet the Twitter

:08:49. > :08:50.

:08:50. > :08:54.Gritter! Via social media, more and more people are coming to us. It

:08:54. > :09:00.exists to be able to give people up-to-date information about what

:09:00. > :09:03.the roads are like. If anything, if it causes people to take an

:09:04. > :09:06.alternative route or drive slightly slower, then it it will be well

:09:06. > :09:09.worth it. All while attention is focused on

:09:09. > :09:11.the roads, snow has already smothered much of our regions's

:09:11. > :09:13.landscapes. The National Farmers Union say it

:09:13. > :09:23.is safe for crops, but not calves. This prize-winning Lincolnshire Red

:09:23. > :09:25.

:09:25. > :09:32.was born last night. We will probably take it in and he will

:09:32. > :09:36.come back down here in a deal too. But you can see that all the rest

:09:36. > :09:40.of the cows are out enjoying the afternoon sun.

:09:40. > :09:46.Here is not the only one that needs a little warmth. Tonight, Boston's

:09:46. > :09:52.Methodist church will become a temporary homeless shelter. It is

:09:52. > :09:57.government regulations about what is a emergency overnight centre. So,

:09:57. > :10:01.when it is not freezing, we cannot do this, which is rather

:10:01. > :10:03.frustrating. And while the church is trying to

:10:03. > :10:06.prevent incidents, the emergency services could have more to respond

:10:06. > :10:15.to this weekend. East Midlands Ambulance Service are key to avoid

:10:15. > :10:20.scenes like this. When we face cold weather, we have the large increase

:10:20. > :10:27.in people tripping and falling. But we are also campaigning for people

:10:27. > :10:30.to be aware of the dangers of ice Ornette lakes and ponds.

:10:30. > :10:33.Picture postcard it may be, but practical it is not. The only

:10:33. > :10:36.saving Grace is that this cold spell looks to be a short one.

:10:36. > :10:39.Despite the weather, people are choosing to sleep rough tonight to

:10:39. > :10:42.raise the issue of homeless people. The Sleep Easy events are taking

:10:42. > :10:52.place in Lincoln, Grimsby, Hull and in Scunthorpe, where Linsey's is

:10:52. > :11:01.

:11:01. > :11:06.just now. How many people are They are about 30 people at this

:11:06. > :11:11.event, but there are others across the region. It is to raise the

:11:11. > :11:17.awareness of rough sleeping. These people have a warm bed to sleep in

:11:17. > :11:22.at home, but they have given it up tonight. They have wrapped up with

:11:22. > :11:27.cardboard to keep out the cold, they have sleeping bags and snacks

:11:27. > :11:31.or late at. There are some Humberside police officers who are

:11:31. > :11:34.doing this in their own time because they see the problem of

:11:35. > :11:38.homelessness first hand. It is below freezing, but the people are

:11:38. > :11:44.taking the attitude this is only one night, not like the people who

:11:44. > :11:54.they are trying to help. Let's get the all-important

:11:54. > :11:56.

:11:56. > :12:01.It is East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire who could see the

:12:01. > :12:09.heaviest snowfalls and the Met Office at the Amber alert in place.

:12:09. > :12:13.10 centimetres is expected. Around four inches. It comes into our area

:12:13. > :12:19.later in the afternoon and snows heavily tomorrow evening and

:12:19. > :12:24.tomorrow night. It is this a weather system which is coming up

:12:24. > :12:29.against cold, continental air and when they meet, that is where we

:12:29. > :12:33.think there will be significant snowfall to come. In the short term

:12:33. > :12:41.it is straight forward. Obviously been cold, temperatures dropping

:12:41. > :12:44.like a stone. We are already below freezing in some places. It is very

:12:44. > :12:54.cold this evening and during the course of the night. The breeze

:12:54. > :12:55.

:12:55. > :13:02.will pick up slightly from the South West later. The sun will rise

:13:02. > :13:08.in the morning at around 7:43am. Those are your high water times. It

:13:09. > :13:15.is a reasonable morning. Frosty to start but plenty of Sunshine around.

:13:15. > :13:19.Get out and enjoy it because cloud will increase in the afternoon. It

:13:19. > :13:25.will snow towards the end of the afternoon and evening across

:13:25. > :13:29.Lincolnshire and North Norfolk. It will be a poor end to the

:13:29. > :13:37.afternoons. You can see clearly Snow will be in to some areas by

:13:37. > :13:47.the end of the day. Some heavy snow tomorrow night. Sunday looks fine

:13:47. > :13:57.

:13:57. > :14:07.and dry with Sunshine. But it will Thanks for some beautiful photos of

:14:07. > :14:21.

:14:21. > :14:24.the weather which you've sent to us After years of campaigning,

:14:24. > :14:28.hospital patients could get free travel over the Humber Bridge. It's

:14:28. > :14:35.part of a new proposal from the four councils who are taking on the

:14:35. > :14:40.remaining bridge debt. Our reporter, Anne-Marie Tasker, joins me now?

:14:41. > :14:46.And what has happened today? There has been plenty of talk for all

:14:46. > :14:52.bridge tolls for motorists coming down to 1.50 volts up but this is

:14:52. > :14:55.about hospital praised -- patients going over the bridge for free.

:14:55. > :15:00.Jenny Walton has campaigned for this bar over a decade and she

:15:00. > :15:05.wants patients from over the South Bank to come and go over the bridge

:15:05. > :15:08.for free if they need essential treatment. The stress of coping

:15:08. > :15:14.with any sort of disease for which you have to travel across the

:15:14. > :15:18.bridge for treatment, you cannot believe it unless you have to

:15:18. > :15:24.experience it. To know you don't have to worry quite so much about

:15:24. > :15:31.the cost of going back and forth, treatments, and follow-up clinics,

:15:31. > :15:36.it will be a big relief. Why is this another step closer? It is

:15:36. > :15:42.part of the plan to reach finance the bridge debt, with the four

:15:42. > :15:46.councils taking on a responsibility of the debt each. The MP for the

:15:46. > :15:50.North East Lincolnshire Council thought it was too big a proportion.

:15:50. > :15:57.But he said patients on his area will benefit, they have reached an

:15:57. > :16:02.agreement. There are about 25,000 people in total who have to go for

:16:02. > :16:07.treatment. They cannot get it on the South Bank. It is not a case

:16:07. > :16:11.they decided to go there for treatment, they have no choice. So

:16:11. > :16:15.hopefully 25,000 people will get a free crossing over the bridge to

:16:15. > :16:19.get life-saving treatment which is a bonus for them and a bonus for

:16:19. > :16:29.the area. This does need Government approval, but we have been told it

:16:29. > :16:34.

:16:34. > :16:37.is a case of when, rather than if it will happen.

:16:37. > :16:40.Let us know what you think about this one. Is it right to offer free

:16:40. > :16:50.tolls to hospital patients who're travelling across the bridge to

:16:50. > :16:54.

:16:54. > :16:58.Lincolnshire police has revealed that one of its officers was shot

:16:58. > :17:01.during the siege in Sutton St James in Lincolnshire on Tuesday. Armed

:17:01. > :17:06.police were called to the house on Chapelgate after the officer was

:17:06. > :17:09.shot in his police car. He was treated in hospital and discharged

:17:09. > :17:19.the same day. The siege ended when 61 year old, Barry Horspool, was

:17:19. > :17:26.

:17:26. > :17:36.found dead. After a summer of change Hull KR and Hull FC prepare

:17:36. > :17:45.to kick off the new Super League season. Why honouring Grantham's

:17:45. > :17:48.most famous daughter is dividing opinion in the town.

:17:48. > :17:50.It's hoped that a major new advertising campaign will encourage

:17:50. > :17:53.holidaymakers to visit Skegness rather than go abroad this summer.

:17:53. > :17:56.Television adverts costing 200,000 will be made ahead of the Summer

:17:56. > :18:06.season as part of a campaign to sell the resort to the British

:18:06. > :18:11.public, as Simon Spark reports. Excited crowds and packed beaches

:18:11. > :18:15.are what the tourist leaders want to see this summer and why East

:18:15. > :18:21.Lindsey District Council will be spending 100,000 to be part of an

:18:21. > :18:26.advertising campaign to promote Skegness. A key figure in British

:18:26. > :18:30.tourism was here to support this decision to spend. We will lead it

:18:31. > :18:35.with a major TV campaign which will encourage people to holiday at home.

:18:35. > :18:39.I am delighted Skegness will be part of the campaign. Skegness is a

:18:39. > :18:44.leading resort and we want to make sure people enjoy Skegness along

:18:44. > :18:50.with the other seaside resorts in this country. It will be great. A

:18:50. > :18:54.lot more people coming up. You see places like Bridlington,

:18:54. > :18:59.Scarborough and that type of thing on the television. Why should and

:18:59. > :19:04.Skegness do it. On a day like today, the summer looks and feels a world

:19:04. > :19:09.away, but this is the time of year many families plan their summer

:19:09. > :19:14.holidays. And tourism in East Lindsey was worth 450 million to

:19:14. > :19:20.the economy and Skegness was ranked the 4th most popular holiday

:19:20. > :19:24.destination in the country. 20% of the workforce are employed in

:19:24. > :19:29.tourism and hospitality. It is a vital part of the economy for the

:19:29. > :19:33.District as a whole, not just the coast. Businesses are finding

:19:33. > :19:39.getting the tourists in his only half of the solution in difficult,

:19:39. > :19:43.economic times. Last year was the first time it's impacted heavily on

:19:44. > :19:48.Skegness. Visitor numbers were strong but they amount they spend

:19:48. > :19:53.it was down. Hopefully we have got to keep the numbers up and they may

:19:53. > :19:59.spend a little bit more. Although I am not optimistic on that. There

:19:59. > :20:02.remains a fine balance for the year ahead. Getting people to spend in a

:20:02. > :20:10.continually difficult economic climate will continue to be a

:20:10. > :20:13.bigger challenge. Skegness going on the national map

:20:13. > :20:17.in the adverts. Thanks for your response to our

:20:17. > :20:19.story about the Yorkshire Wolds being blighted by fly-tippers. Its

:20:20. > :20:22.countryside scenes have inspired the paintings of David Hockney, but

:20:22. > :20:32.now there are fears the real landscape is being ruined by the

:20:32. > :21:05.

:21:05. > :21:08.waste that's being dumped there. The new Super League season kicks

:21:08. > :21:12.off tonight after a winter of change at both Hull Kingston Rovers

:21:12. > :21:15.and Hull FC. Rovers begin with a game at champion,s Leeds tonight.

:21:15. > :21:19.Hull kick off on Sunday when they meet Warrington, who finished top

:21:19. > :21:28.of Super League before the play- offs. Our sports reporter, Simon

:21:28. > :21:33.Clark, assesses the chances of both clubs.

:21:34. > :21:42.And it is fair to say both Hull KR and Hall FC have been distinguished

:21:42. > :21:47.2011. So the two Matt Ridgers were out an income two Australians. They

:21:47. > :21:54.are ready to affect their changes. The whole place has a new feel

:21:54. > :21:58.about it, a new look about it and a better way to play. It is all about

:21:58. > :22:03.attention to detail. Making sure we do everything right and making sure

:22:03. > :22:09.we are prepared. If we can do that, have the it will hold us in good

:22:09. > :22:15.stead for the future. Change is what these fans know all about.

:22:15. > :22:21.From a mind-boggling 19 stones in September, to 16 stone today, it is

:22:21. > :22:27.all thanks to Hall FC's fit fans project. I have a lot more spring

:22:27. > :22:33.in my step. I can chase round with the kids a lot more. Just healthier

:22:33. > :22:39.in general, to be fair. I can see them challenging for 5th or 6th

:22:39. > :22:44.maybe this season. Better than last season. Rovers supporting Wayne and

:22:44. > :22:49.his family are looking forward. With Wayne completing his list of

:22:49. > :22:55.visiting awake around, he wants to see Rovers play Catalan. I want to

:22:55. > :23:00.get there this it and make it a first, on my own. I think it will

:23:00. > :23:06.be very good for the club. Big change is as good as anything. From

:23:06. > :23:10.what we have seen, the manager will do a great job. Hull might look

:23:10. > :23:15.it's lovely self-, but there's changes have been fundamental. It

:23:15. > :23:18.has led to a certain degree of expectation, because every other

:23:19. > :23:27.leading Super League side has improved its squads. So far either

:23:27. > :23:31.of these sides to make the next step up, will be a big ask. I have

:23:32. > :23:37.been told the referee at the Leeds, Hull KR game is going to keep the

:23:37. > :23:41.pitch covers on until kick-off as the temperature in West Yorkshire,

:23:41. > :23:46.Headingley has fallen sharply. BBC Radio Humberside will be there and

:23:46. > :23:49.we will have the latest reports. And you can see how both our clubs

:23:49. > :23:51.get on in the new series of the Super League Show. It's on at

:23:51. > :23:58.11.35pm on Monday night, that's on BBC One.

:23:58. > :24:01.Tomorrow's football has already been hit by the weather. Grimsby

:24:01. > :24:03.Town's FA Trophy tie at Bath City has been called off. For Hull

:24:03. > :24:07.City's game, there will be a provisional pitch inspection at

:24:07. > :24:13.Portsmouth at 10:00am tomorrow. And there will be an inspection at

:24:13. > :24:16.9:00am for Scunthorpe United's game against Walsall. At the moment

:24:16. > :24:19.Lincoln City's game against Braintree is scheduled to go ahead.

:24:19. > :24:23.Tune in to your BBC local radio stations in the morning to find out

:24:23. > :24:26.the latest. She is Grantham's most famous
