:00:08. > :00:12.Good evening from Look North. The headlines: After a race cyclist was

:00:12. > :00:17.killed when a lorry shed its load, the victim's family hit out at the

:00:17. > :00:23.driver's sentence. She got crushed to death by his trailer. He has 27

:00:23. > :00:28.months. I am disgusted. The owner of Hull City claims higher taxes

:00:28. > :00:31.for millionaires are proving to be in on goal for our economy. Six

:00:31. > :00:37.weeks after he disappeared, the family of a missing man are told

:00:37. > :00:42.her a body found in the Humber is his. He was full of life and he had

:00:42. > :00:45.a cheeky grin. It is a tragedy that such a young life has ended so

:00:45. > :00:51.abruptly. The school children taking inspiration from one of our

:00:51. > :01:01.best Olympic hopefuls. I will have the weather. We will see some rain

:01:01. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:11.at times. A tragic day for two families. The

:01:11. > :01:16.words of the judge at Hull Crown Court after he sentenced a lorry

:01:16. > :01:20.driver to 27 months in prison. Mark Smith was riding his lorry through

:01:20. > :01:24.Hull when a container slipped off the back and fell onto cyclist

:01:24. > :01:29.Susan Russell. The court was told how Mr Smith had a previous

:01:29. > :01:33.unblemished record. On the day in question, his load was secured by

:01:33. > :01:40.just two straps. Our reporter has been speaking to two Susan

:01:40. > :01:45.Russell's family. She has been my sister for 54 years. We have always

:01:46. > :01:51.been close. She was fun a loving. Loads of friends. A a hard-working

:01:51. > :01:58.mother, a fun loving grandmother and a good cyclist. Susan Russell

:01:58. > :02:02.was cycling to work when it this eight tonne blast brief Cabinet

:02:02. > :02:06.fell off the lorry which was carrying it. It landed on its

:02:06. > :02:11.season, killing her instantly. This is one of the busiest roundabouts

:02:11. > :02:16.in Hull. It was not the traffic that caused Susan's death. The

:02:16. > :02:20.cabin was only secured with two straps, one of which was not

:02:20. > :02:26.fastened properly. Hull Crown Court heard from an expert, he said it

:02:26. > :02:30.would have taken at least 40 to make it safe. Driver Mark Smith,

:02:30. > :02:35.seen here on the left, was described by the judge as a

:02:35. > :02:41.candidly honest gentleman with an unblemished driving record. In 27

:02:41. > :02:46.years, he had not even reached a regulation. Failing to inspect the

:02:46. > :02:50.load he picked up was negligence. A warning, the judge said, to the

:02:50. > :02:57.haulage industry. This case highlights the responsibility that

:02:57. > :03:02.drivers of all vehicles, whether they are cars or large goods

:03:02. > :03:08.vehicles, has to the public. They need to be driven safely. They may

:03:09. > :03:13.not be the person paying the ultimate price. The judge told Hull

:03:13. > :03:18.Crown Court how this had left two families in grief for different

:03:18. > :03:23.reason. Susan, because they had lost her, but for mild, it was

:03:23. > :03:30.because he had been left hopeless and riddled with grief. She is dead.

:03:30. > :03:36.She got squashed to death by his trailer. He has got 27 months. I am

:03:36. > :03:40.disgusted. Susan's daughters have told us they plan to appeal a

:03:40. > :03:50.sentence, believing 27 months is too short a punishment for taking

:03:50. > :03:52.

:03:52. > :03:58.their mother's life. The boom in offshore industries

:03:58. > :04:02.boosting business is in a our area. There is a warning tonight from one

:04:02. > :04:05.of the richest men in East Yorkshire the business owners will

:04:05. > :04:10.leave the country unless the government cuts taxes for the

:04:10. > :04:14.wealthy. The chairman of Hull City, Assem Allam, is urging the

:04:15. > :04:18.Chancellor to cut to the top rate of tax in next week's budget. It is

:04:18. > :04:25.reported George Osborne is considering cutting the 50% tax

:04:25. > :04:31.rate for people who earn more than 150,000 a year.

:04:31. > :04:37.The recent Sunday Times Rich List suggested Assem Allam was worth

:04:37. > :04:41.little under 300 million. But to the east Yorkshire-based

:04:41. > :04:45.businessmen and Hull City owner says he is fed up with handing over

:04:45. > :04:49.half he income to the taxman. Do you think is right wealthy people

:04:49. > :04:57.should pay their fair share? Yes. But if you tell me, you work hard,

:04:57. > :05:05.and a 50%. But I can go to Holland and I will pay 30%, you are

:05:05. > :05:09.risking... It is actually happening, many people with billions of pounds

:05:09. > :05:15.are leaving the country. There has been widespread newspaper

:05:15. > :05:20.speculation that the Chancellor will cut -- will cut taxes for high

:05:20. > :05:26.earners. At the moment, there is a debate going on in government over

:05:26. > :05:31.the future of the 50 pence top rate of tax which applies to people who

:05:31. > :05:36.earn over 150,000 a year. There has been talk of a mansion tax and

:05:36. > :05:43.some Lib Dems would like to see how a player to net tax. It is one that

:05:43. > :05:48.could help to ensure the wealthiest of this country pay their fair

:05:48. > :05:55.share. Although he says he does not support one political party, Assem

:05:55. > :06:01.Allam invited Ed Miliband to watch Hull City's match, despite the lido

:06:01. > :06:11.cancelling an appearance as a protest against health reforms due

:06:11. > :06:17.to ill health. There was doubt about him coming to the rally. The

:06:17. > :06:23.football match is there, regardless of him coming or not. We cannot

:06:23. > :06:27.cancel it. The success of Assem Allam's regenerated company has led

:06:27. > :06:32.to the Egyptian-born businessman becoming as wealthy as the Queen.

:06:32. > :06:41.It will be up to the Chancellor to decide how much he and many others

:06:41. > :06:46.paid to Her Majesty's Treasury. Joining me is John Robinson, who is

:06:46. > :06:51.a senior Liberal Democrat in Hull. Judging by reports, it looks like

:06:51. > :06:56.the Chancellor is poised to cut the top rate of tax. Does that please

:06:56. > :07:01.the Lib Dems? If we have a Budget where wealthy people are taxed in

:07:01. > :07:06.an additional way, I will be happy. That has got to happen. It could be

:07:06. > :07:11.a mansion tax. I am not privy to the discussions. I want to make

:07:11. > :07:14.sure richer people do pay more tax. Are you worried if these successful

:07:15. > :07:19.people are penalised, they will take, as they heard, their business

:07:20. > :07:25.abroad? With all respect to Assem Allam, who I admire, he has proved

:07:25. > :07:29.you can build a successful business here. The enterprise zones that we

:07:29. > :07:33.are developing in Hull should mean people find it easier to develop

:07:33. > :07:39.business. If reports are accurate, George Osborne will be cutting the

:07:39. > :07:44.top rate of income tax but he is not in favour of a mansion tax.

:07:44. > :07:48.will have to wait and see. The Lib Dems are arguing strongly for this.

:07:48. > :07:53.That is the advantage of having the Lib Dems in government. Otherwise,

:07:53. > :07:57.the Tories would have things their own way. How do you strike a

:07:57. > :08:02.balance between showing we are open for business as a country but also

:08:02. > :08:06.we are all in this together? think you make sure people pay a

:08:06. > :08:12.reasonable amount of tax and if people with a home over 2 million,

:08:12. > :08:16.why should they pay the same amount of council tax as people living in

:08:16. > :08:22.a three-bedroomed home? The system has to be fair and people have to

:08:22. > :08:27.create businesses. Do you think you will be shoulder to shoulder with

:08:27. > :08:34.the Chancellor? We will be arguing for a fair distribution of wealth

:08:34. > :08:38.in this country. I am proud to do that. Thank you. We would like to

:08:38. > :08:42.know your thoughts on this. Is it right to hit for the super-rich

:08:42. > :08:52.with higher taxes? How worried are you able take their businesses and

:08:52. > :08:53.

:08:53. > :09:00.their jobs abroad? You can e-mail us. And you can call or textiles.

:09:00. > :09:09.All follow me on Twitter. -- text us. This is one of the topics that

:09:09. > :09:15.will be debated on Sunday Politics. That is at 12 noon.

:09:15. > :09:19.For a man has been charged with murdering a baby. Six-month-old Ian

:09:19. > :09:24.-- Ethan Hopson died before Christmas after his life support

:09:24. > :09:31.machine was switched off. Ian Redgrave had been charged with

:09:31. > :09:36.grievous bodily harm. He appeared in court this morning. More than

:09:36. > :09:43.100,000 is being invested in a failed Icelandic bank has been

:09:43. > :09:47.repaid. -- that had been invested. Are they invested before 2008.

:09:47. > :09:50.Glitnir owes the council 1.2 million.

:09:50. > :09:52.The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has emerged as one of the

:09:52. > :09:55.frontrunners to succeed the Archbishop of Canterbury, who has

:09:55. > :09:58.announced today that he is retiring. Dr Sentamu, who was in Tadcaster

:09:58. > :10:05.today, paid tribute to Rowan Williams and said he was very sad

:10:06. > :10:09.to hear the news. A campaign for better rail links

:10:09. > :10:15.between Hull and north-west England has failed. A new Trans Pennine

:10:15. > :10:22.train will be introduced in 2014. Hull council hoped it would run to

:10:22. > :10:24.the city. A provisional timetable shows the service will go to York

:10:25. > :10:28.instead. The body of a man found in the

:10:28. > :10:34.River Humber at Brough Haven on Saturday has been formally

:10:34. > :10:38.identified as missing Hull man at Stuart Gilson. He was last seen on

:10:38. > :10:43.the Drypool Bridge in Hull more than six weeks ago. Family and

:10:43. > :10:48.friends are leaving their tributes. Our reporter is there. Have the

:10:48. > :10:53.family given any reaction to today was no news?

:10:53. > :10:59.Of course this is an incredibly difficult time for the family. It

:10:59. > :11:05.is the news they have been dreading for weeks. They had never given up

:11:05. > :11:11.hope of finding Stuart so they want some privacy to come to terms with

:11:11. > :11:15.this terrible news. The police say they are not treating the death as

:11:15. > :11:20.suspicious. The confirmation of his body will put an end to what has

:11:20. > :11:25.been a huge and heartbreaking search. Devastated and desperate,

:11:25. > :11:32.but Stuart Gilson's family refused to give up on him. With friends

:11:32. > :11:42.they search the city, hoping to find their boy. The worst pain for

:11:42. > :11:46.us ever. Come home, Stuart. Today came the news his mother hoped she

:11:46. > :11:52.would never hear. His body was discovered in the river humbug on

:11:52. > :11:56.Saturday. This morning, police confirmed it is her son. -- River

:11:56. > :12:01.Humber. His colleagues say his death is a huge loss. He always had

:12:01. > :12:08.a smile on his face. He worked really hard. He had a lot of time

:12:08. > :12:13.before his colleagues. He is such a nice man. It is a tragedy that such

:12:13. > :12:17.a young life has ended so abruptly. He was full of life and he had a

:12:17. > :12:22.cheeky grin. He was a ray of sunshine. These sentiments have

:12:22. > :12:26.been echoed in more than 1500 messages on Facebook, all

:12:26. > :12:33.expressing how much Stewart will be missed.

:12:33. > :12:38.As well as the online tributes, how are the public reacting?

:12:38. > :12:44.Behind me there are many tributes and balloons tied to Drypool Bridge.

:12:44. > :12:49.This has become a memorial to -- a memorial spot to Stuart because it

:12:49. > :12:53.is the last place he was seen. I have seen it several people today

:12:53. > :12:57.and it seems to be a story the people of Hull have taken to their

:12:57. > :13:03.hearts. Many of them were involved in the search. Stewart's sister

:13:03. > :13:08.described the support from the people of Hull as amazing. There

:13:08. > :13:13.are 25,000 members of a Facebook group dedicated to Stewart. Denied,

:13:13. > :13:23.the messages are flooding in. One of the latest says, you are the

:13:23. > :13:24.

:13:24. > :13:34.brighter start in the sky. -- tonight. Thank you.

:13:34. > :13:39.

:13:39. > :13:47.Still ahead: Find out why a these Don't forget, if you have a picture

:13:47. > :13:56.you are proud of, then send it in. Tonight's was taken by Mark. This

:13:56. > :14:00.could be abroad, couldn't it? Thank you for that. Lisa, good evening.

:14:00. > :14:04.Good evening. You're a fan club have been lobbying need to know

:14:04. > :14:08.that you on tonight meet you will be pleased about that. Have you

:14:08. > :14:13.forgotten my barometer check? haven't. It is not the best time to

:14:13. > :14:19.be checking it, because the pressure is falling, but it was

:14:19. > :14:24.1011 at 6:00pm. We got there in the end! With pressure building, that

:14:24. > :14:27.will be a much better time to search your barometer, but for the

:14:27. > :14:33.weekend, the weather will be unsettled, and we will see some

:14:33. > :14:40.rain, some welcome rain for some others. The high pressure has

:14:40. > :14:42.drifted away, at the weather isn't settled anymore, and there is a

:14:42. > :14:49.weather front pushing him on Saturday. A fair bit of cloud, and

:14:49. > :14:59.a bit of brightness at times. One or two clear spells, but on the

:14:59. > :15:04.

:15:04. > :15:14.whole, cloudy skies tonight. For Looking at the Sunday Times

:15:14. > :15:18.

:15:18. > :15:25.tomorrow, it will run at 6:10am. Tomorrow, a fairly mild start the

:15:25. > :15:34.day, but a drizzly and dull start as well. It will Brighton and

:15:34. > :15:42.little, with the sunshine, triggering after some drizzle. --

:15:42. > :15:46.triggering off. There will be a moderate breeze from the south-west.

:15:46. > :15:53.We will continue to see showery outbreaks of rain overnight into

:15:53. > :16:00.Sunday. It quickly brightened up, still one or two showers around on

:16:00. > :16:10.Sunday, but not as many as on Saturday. Some decent spells of

:16:10. > :16:12.

:16:12. > :16:14.sunshine, temperatures around 10 1011, there we are! Have a good

:16:14. > :16:16.weekend. Business leaders in East Yorkshire

:16:16. > :16:20.and Lincolnshire say offshore industries are continuing to create

:16:20. > :16:23.jobs and wealth despite the economic downturn. An increase in

:16:23. > :16:27.oil, gas and renewable energy activity in the North Sea is

:16:27. > :16:33.already being seized upon by companies around the Humber. Here's

:16:33. > :16:37.our Business Correspondent Paul Murphy.

:16:37. > :16:44.In this warehouse to you will find everything from a bottle of ketchup

:16:44. > :16:47.to a life jacket. They provide their services to more than 1000

:16:47. > :16:53.vessels every month. The company is growing fast because offshore

:16:53. > :16:57.industries like gas, oil and wind turbines are also booming. There

:16:57. > :17:02.has been some good exploration in the North Sea recently, and we have

:17:02. > :17:07.gained some contracts to supply oil and gas companies on a worldwide

:17:07. > :17:13.basis. Our product range is internet, we provide anything the

:17:13. > :17:19.customer wants, but we do keep certain items on stock. -- is

:17:19. > :17:23.infinite. Oil, gas and renewable energy are the offshore industries

:17:23. > :17:28.which have shown it resilience to the economic downturn and a

:17:28. > :17:31.continuing to create onshore opportunities. And one of those is

:17:31. > :17:35.a new business here at Humberside airport, where offshore workers fly

:17:36. > :17:39.in and out every day. This specialist hotel was built in

:17:39. > :17:45.consultation with the oil and gas industry, which meet its workforce

:17:45. > :17:50.close to the airport, well looked after and available at short notice.

:17:50. > :17:54.A lot of our guys are there for two weeks, then go home for two weeks,

:17:54. > :17:59.then come back, this comes -- becomes a second home for them. We

:17:59. > :18:03.like to think our staff treat them in a manner they expect, they are

:18:03. > :18:09.not just a passing guest. companies in this area are of

:18:09. > :18:14.international quality, doing work all around the world. Right around

:18:14. > :18:17.the UK and further afield as well. In the next five years, more than

:18:17. > :18:22.20 billion will be spent by the renewable energy industry alone in

:18:22. > :18:31.the North Sea. Marine based companies around the Humber ignore

:18:31. > :18:34.these opportunities at their peril. Last night, we heard about two

:18:34. > :18:38.areas of Hull which are amongst the worst places in the country to get

:18:38. > :18:44.a job. It is estimated that more than 35 people are competing they

:18:44. > :18:54.each vacancy in East Hull. In North Hull, the figure is about 31. There

:18:54. > :19:26.

:19:26. > :19:30.Our business correspondent Paul Murphy is with me in the studio.

:19:30. > :19:34.You have been reporting all week on businesses which are growing. How

:19:34. > :19:39.confident are local businesses feeling at the moment? The business

:19:39. > :19:49.you saw in the film is perhaps the exception, generally, there isn't a

:19:49. > :19:53.great deal of confidence around. I talk to about 20 a month, and 1500

:19:53. > :20:00.businesses surveyed over the next three months, 19 of them expect to

:20:00. > :20:04.create jobs -- 19%. 22% of them expect to shed jobs. So we are

:20:04. > :20:10.still on dodgy ground here. What sort of encouragement will there be

:20:10. > :20:13.for them in the Budget regarding tax? Two headline things for local

:20:13. > :20:17.businesses, they will be looking for something to be done about the

:20:17. > :20:22.price of fuel, particularly the haulage industry, which is it

:20:22. > :20:26.really struggling. A penny on a litre affect them in a big way.

:20:26. > :20:33.Something on National Insurance, the cost of employing people to

:20:33. > :20:39.stop people I talk to say it is it stopping them from expanding.

:20:39. > :20:42.budget is next Wednesday. The Hull City manager Nick Barmby

:20:43. > :20:45.has a fully fit squad to choose from ahead of this weekend's match

:20:45. > :20:49.with Crystal Palace in the Championship. The Tigers moved into

:20:49. > :20:54.the play-off places after this 3-0 win midweek over promotion rivals

:20:54. > :21:04.Cardiff City. Barmby has warned the players who aren't in the team to

:21:04. > :21:26.

:21:26. > :21:32.A team of Filipino sailors are starting to make their mark on the

:21:32. > :21:38.East Yorkshire sporting scene. They are all basketball players, the

:21:38. > :21:43.national sport of the Philippines. Our sports reporter has been

:21:43. > :21:51.finding out how they divided their time between duties on board ship

:21:51. > :21:56.and playing their favourite game. They sailed daily between Hull and

:21:56. > :21:59.the Continent. These Filipina sailors look after passenger needs

:21:59. > :22:04.on the ferries that travel to Rotterdam and sabre. But never far

:22:04. > :22:07.from their minds is Saturday afternoon in Hull. Every Saturday,

:22:07. > :22:14.the Filipino sailors leave the ferry for their most important

:22:14. > :22:20.appointment of the week. A with the basketball court. It helps us

:22:20. > :22:25.develop our teamwork. It is a good exercise for us, but only mentally

:22:25. > :22:31.but it is a Belleek -- physically as well. They played in the

:22:31. > :22:38.burgeoning Humberside League. a passion for us. For them, it is

:22:38. > :22:42.only basketball, but for us, it is at passion. It is a serious

:22:42. > :22:48.business, with tactical plans outlined before the game, against

:22:48. > :22:53.today's opponents, themselves made up of mostly Lithuanians. In the

:22:53. > :22:58.future, we could be a bit more competitive than now, so I could

:22:58. > :23:06.say it is a good game for us. I think we have already shown the

:23:06. > :23:14.best we can do. In this game, it is the opponent to win, in a

:23:14. > :23:22.competitive contest. They want to win. As do the opponent today.

:23:22. > :23:25.is so much fun. But unfortunately, it was a bit of a disappointment.

:23:25. > :23:29.Back on board, there are a few minutes to contemplate the game

:23:29. > :23:38.before they set sail, waiting for the next Saturday, when they can

:23:38. > :23:41.take Hull by storm. With 133 days to go until the start

:23:41. > :23:44.of the London Olympics, much has been made of the legacy for young

:23:44. > :23:54.people. Youngsters from Hull and East Yorkshire have been speaking

:23:54. > :24:02.

:24:02. > :24:07.to one local Olympian to find out The legacy of the Olympics will
