:00:00. > :00:00.weekend. That's all from us. Now the news

:00:00. > :00:11.where you are. Good evening and welcome to BBC Look

:00:12. > :00:18.North. The headlines tonight: a dark day for the steel town as more than

:00:19. > :00:26.300 job losses are announced. As a result of the recession, the demand

:00:27. > :00:37.has been reduced. I am live in Scunthorpe with reaction. It is

:00:38. > :00:44.going to be a ghost town. There is nothing in Scunthorpe any more.

:00:45. > :00:51.Rocketing fuel bills force a well`known sports club to the brink

:00:52. > :00:56.of closure. Calls for more state schools to

:00:57. > :01:00.provide boarding places for pupils. Preserving Royal palaces for the

:01:01. > :01:04.future, the Lincolnshire woman who says she's got the best job in

:01:05. > :01:15.history. And join me for the weather.

:01:16. > :01:24.Good evening. 340 jobs are under threat at Scunthorpe's goes private

:01:25. > :01:27.employer. Tata Steel say they are having to make job losses because

:01:28. > :01:31.they are not selling of steel to the construction industry. The company

:01:32. > :01:35.has been successful in bringing in big orders in recent months, but

:01:36. > :01:44.lost more than ?800 million last year. How much of the shop is

:01:45. > :01:50.today's news? Many outside observers will be

:01:51. > :01:55.shocked. It comes at a time when we are told that they UK manufacturing

:01:56. > :02:01.sector is improving. Tata Steel have also announced new orders. Speaking

:02:02. > :02:07.to staff today, it is clear that this announcement did not come out

:02:08. > :02:16.of the blue. Not for the fasting, workers arrived

:02:17. > :02:24.at the plant to your grim news. It is sort of expected. Something had

:02:25. > :02:36.to be done. We have a great workforce here. Tata Steel blamed

:02:37. > :02:39.weak demand. Union leaders say they are seeking an urgent meeting with

:02:40. > :02:48.the company to look at possible alternatives to job losses. We will

:02:49. > :02:51.not accept compulsory redundancies. We believe there will be a process

:02:52. > :02:56.that will follow, that ensures nobody leaves the Scunthorpe 's

:02:57. > :03:07.steelworks that does not want to. Just last week, a Labour MP visited

:03:08. > :03:14.the plant. In August it was announced that the steelworks were

:03:15. > :03:20.one of 60,000 `` won a 60,000 pounds order from Saudi Arabia. In

:03:21. > :03:29.September last year, Tata Steel won a contract for the French high`speed

:03:30. > :03:36.railway. In the 2011, 1200 jobs were lost at the site. We are in

:03:37. > :03:42.difficult times. That means a company like Tata Steel will be

:03:43. > :03:50.shaping its business into the future. The record numbers of

:03:51. > :04:00.apprenticeships take on `` taken on. But we can also have difficult

:04:01. > :04:05.news alongside that. If you take just the construction sector, which

:04:06. > :04:12.is the market we supply into, it is reduced by 50% since the date in

:04:13. > :04:19.2007. We do not see that the covering 14 years. Today's news is

:04:20. > :04:25.an example of how the global economy has cast a dark shadow over the

:04:26. > :04:28.workforce. We are told the majority of job losses will affect management

:04:29. > :04:34.and administration roles. That is one controversial aspect. That is

:04:35. > :04:41.that Tata Steel say the decision was largely based on EU environmental

:04:42. > :04:48.regulations. Tata Steel claims it has had a huge impact both here and

:04:49. > :04:57.in Europe. Expect a fierce debate on this to come. Some politicians are

:04:58. > :05:05.claiming that green taxes have killed jobs here in Scunthorpe and

:05:06. > :05:08.elsewhere. Thank you. Earlier I spoke to Jon Bolton from Tata Steel

:05:09. > :05:18.and asked him why Scunthorpe was losing jobs. We have announced a

:05:19. > :05:28.proposal to reduce our headcount by about 500. We will have to consult

:05:29. > :05:33.with trade unions. 340 of those are associated with Scunthorpe. The

:05:34. > :05:37.chance losses we have turned a corner. I thought things were

:05:38. > :05:45.getting better. Are you being premature? Now. We acknowledge

:05:46. > :05:50.things are getting better. But this is restructuring. If you look at the

:05:51. > :05:57.markets we supply into, particularly the market `` construction market,

:05:58. > :06:01.it is in a poorer state. We see some recovery but we will not too tongue

:06:02. > :06:08.to the previous levels until the end of the decade. These jobs, can you

:06:09. > :06:15.guarantee that you will be able to avoid compulsory job losses? We can

:06:16. > :06:21.never guarantee the avoidance of compulsory job losses. But we have a

:06:22. > :06:30.very good track record to avoid them as much as possible. During the last

:06:31. > :06:33.restructuring, were the work of job losses, double no compulsory

:06:34. > :06:37.redundancies. But it becomes more and more difficult. It is difficult

:06:38. > :06:47.for people to understand. You have orders from abroad. An order from

:06:48. > :06:53.Network Rail. Why are you making such big losses when you have orders

:06:54. > :06:59.like that? It was really positive news for this business. We have

:07:00. > :07:07.invested heavily in many sectors. We are a global force. However if you

:07:08. > :07:13.add up the volume of real that we supply, it is about half a million

:07:14. > :07:19.tonnes. The steel plant your produces 3.2 million. We have got to

:07:20. > :07:24.make sure that all that volume is a viable product. People in Scunthorpe

:07:25. > :07:30.have seen a job score on a regular basis. If you able to look them in

:07:31. > :07:35.the eye and tell them that Tata Steel is committed to the town?

:07:36. > :07:42.Absolutely. That is an important message. We are not taking out any

:07:43. > :07:54.capacity or capability. This is about making us more competitive.

:07:55. > :07:59.Thank you. The steelworks have been at the heart of the community for

:08:00. > :08:04.more than a century. People living here have always followed the

:08:05. > :08:13.fortunes of the industry. Today's News has prompted more feels about

:08:14. > :08:17.the economic future of the town. These schoolchildren could be

:08:18. > :08:29.hearing bad news at home. Many families are the affected by what

:08:30. > :08:32.has happened here. My husband works there. We are friends there. It is

:08:33. > :08:37.not good news. Especially at this time of year. Scunthorpe and

:08:38. > :08:43.steelworks have gone together naturally. Despite today's

:08:44. > :08:50.announcement, production is not in jeopardy. But people are downbeat.

:08:51. > :08:56.Not everybody is going to stay in work. My brother`in`law works there.

:08:57. > :09:08.He is wondering when he will lose his job. It is going to be very

:09:09. > :09:13.difficult. This evening, an empty town centre has prompted calls for

:09:14. > :09:21.Scunthorpe to diversify its job market into other industries. I

:09:22. > :09:28.think we will get a new look completely. It needs to happen

:09:29. > :09:37.sooner rather than later. The council will do everything in its

:09:38. > :09:42.power to help those affected. The town is asking what next. They are

:09:43. > :09:52.hoping will be jobs out there to ensure the committee does not

:09:53. > :09:55.struggle for employment. If you are affected by this

:09:56. > :10:29.announcement then we want to hear from you.

:10:30. > :10:34.The Chief Executive of North Lincolnshire Council has apologised

:10:35. > :10:37.to the families of 200 children with special needs after the council lost

:10:38. > :10:41.a memory stick containing the children's personal details. The

:10:42. > :10:46.data stick contained the names, addresses and health conditions. The

:10:47. > :10:53.Information Commissioner has fined the Council ?80,000 for the beach.

:10:54. > :10:56.A teenager arrested in Lincoln after a 14`year`old boy was severely

:10:57. > :11:04.burned by a bonfire will police action. The 15`year`old was detained

:11:05. > :11:07.nine days ago. The 20 17th UK City of Culture will

:11:08. > :11:12.be announced on Wednesday the 20th of November. The government

:11:13. > :11:15.confirmed the date this morning. Hull is competing for the title

:11:16. > :11:22.against Leicester, Swansea and Dundee.

:11:23. > :11:29.It has inspired a generation of sports men and women but now Hull's

:11:30. > :11:34.Hull Young People Institute could be forced to close because of rising

:11:35. > :11:41.energy costs. The YPI has been in the city since the 1800s but it's

:11:42. > :11:46.sound is now up for sale. Pity by others and found the Sidekick was in

:11:47. > :11:54.a matter of months. Looking after sports claims can be

:11:55. > :11:59.expensive. Here at the Hull Young People Institute, spiralling energy

:12:00. > :12:08.bills mean this large site is now up for sale. The running costs of gas,

:12:09. > :12:14.electricity and especially the water have gone way of the scale. If no

:12:15. > :12:20.investor comes through then we will close. Founded in 1860, the charity

:12:21. > :12:26.has a long tradition of encouraging sporting talent. Today, this site is

:12:27. > :12:30.home to a range of clubs, from cricket, two balls and tennis. It is

:12:31. > :12:36.used as a training ground by Super League side Hull FC. But its

:12:37. > :12:42.buildings are outdated and its future is at risk. We have got 56

:12:43. > :12:58.rugby teams using it every single day. It is massively important ``

:12:59. > :13:02.five or six. The health of our sports clubs is a growing concern.

:13:03. > :13:04.Research shows that in the UK be spent 38% more on water rates in

:13:05. > :13:11.2012 computer the year before. Ten more percent on your chesty and 20%

:13:12. > :13:19.more on business rates. It would be a great shame if these linchpins of

:13:20. > :13:24.our community had to close. The government and local authorities

:13:25. > :13:28.must recognise that and do everything possible to keep the

:13:29. > :13:30.clubs and business. Sometimes the funding that is available as an

:13:31. > :13:37.enough to relieve financial pressures. On the back of clubs

:13:38. > :13:43.already struggling, this is a mountain for them to claim. A

:13:44. > :13:45.condition of the sale is that it would remain as a sports ground.

:13:46. > :13:59.Additional buyer is found it could close for good.

:14:00. > :14:07.Coming up. Would you be prepared to spend ?12,000 a year to send your

:14:08. > :14:11.child to state school. And behind`the`scenes of the Palace of

:14:12. > :14:20.the past. We get access to one of the country's most ancient

:14:21. > :14:27.buildings. Don't forget, you can send in your

:14:28. > :14:40.pictures. Here are some indecent. `` Soma this. `` Soma geese. Our

:14:41. > :14:49.director has made them move. Here is the weather forecast.

:14:50. > :15:00.Tomorrow, we are looking at a fine start to the day. There will be some

:15:01. > :15:07.strong winds. That is because of this cold front. Before then, we

:15:08. > :15:12.will have some fine weather, but the breeze were picked up. We have had

:15:13. > :15:17.some showers pushing through the day. You can see them on the

:15:18. > :15:23.satellite picture. It is a largely dry story and the temperatures are

:15:24. > :15:27.starting to fall. There is the risk of some rain, but for most places we

:15:28. > :15:34.are looking at a dry weather. Overnight, the breeze will calm

:15:35. > :15:37.down, and there will be some mist and fog. The temperatures will be in

:15:38. > :15:43.single figures. It might mean that out in the countryside there will be

:15:44. > :15:51.some ground frost. The sun will rise in the morning before seven o'clock.

:15:52. > :15:58.It was set later in the evening. Here are the tides. Tomorrow, one of

:15:59. > :16:04.those lovely autumnal mornings. It will be cold and clear. The lots of

:16:05. > :16:07.sunshine. In the early part of the afternoon there was be sunshine, but

:16:08. > :16:13.during the afternoon it will cloud over so that by tomorrow evening

:16:14. > :16:19.there will be some rain. Temperatures will be a bit higher

:16:20. > :16:24.than today, getting to 11 or 12 degrees. 11 is 52 Fahrenheit. On

:16:25. > :16:30.Thursday, there will be two weather systems. There will be high pressure

:16:31. > :16:43.bringing more settled conditions on Friday, and then it will be more

:16:44. > :16:53.autumnal on Saturday. We had lots of responses to the pictures yesterday.

:16:54. > :16:56.Parents should be prepared up to ?12,000 a year if they want to give

:16:57. > :17:02.their children a good education. That is the view of one senior head

:17:03. > :17:09.teacher. Ray McGovern says that more state schools should be asking ``

:17:10. > :17:15.offering boarding places in order to as `` cut travel time. State`run

:17:16. > :17:21.boarding schools have free tuition, but accommodation has to be paid

:17:22. > :17:25.for. First, our reporter has been to a state boarding school in

:17:26. > :17:32.Lincolnshire. A break from lessons for Lee and

:17:33. > :17:36.Leo. They are boarders and say that living near the classroom helps them

:17:37. > :17:39.academically and socially. The best thing is the friendship

:17:40. > :17:42.that you can make in the boarding house.

:17:43. > :17:49.It has made me become more knowledgeable. I know how to deal

:17:50. > :17:53.with social situations. It has hot meat there. It has helped my

:17:54. > :18:04.confidence. `` it has boosted my confidence.

:18:05. > :18:09.It costs a lot to stay here, but the education is free. If you contrast

:18:10. > :18:12.that with a private school, the financial advantages are clear.

:18:13. > :18:18.So does the headteacher believe that more state schools should offer

:18:19. > :18:23.boarding places? If schools feel that commitment to

:18:24. > :18:28.boarding, it will be a great addition. But they have to have the

:18:29. > :18:30.staffing and the expertise and the determination, because the skills

:18:31. > :18:41.required are diverse. According to the Independent Schools

:18:42. > :18:47.Council there were 479 boarding schools in the UK. Only 37 are state

:18:48. > :18:55.schools. We as parents if they would consider a boarding school.

:18:56. > :19:00.No, we like to spend time with our children. We like to keep our

:19:01. > :19:05.children at home to look after. The parents would get a break during

:19:06. > :19:09.the week and the children would have more of a social life.

:19:10. > :19:14.Would you let go to a boarding school? No.

:19:15. > :19:19.There is a number of problems with the boarding situation and that is

:19:20. > :19:23.because the parents have to pay. We think that there should be a school

:19:24. > :19:29.that every child can access. But with many children travelling

:19:30. > :19:32.long distances, having more that offer boarding may even persuade

:19:33. > :19:39.parents not to make costly moves to be near them.

:19:40. > :19:45.It is interesting. I spoke to Ray McGovern, the chairman of the

:19:46. > :19:50.Boarding Schools' Association, and I asked him how he expected parents to

:19:51. > :19:54.pay the ?12,000 a year needed for a state boarding school. For some

:19:55. > :20:00.parents, it would be out of reach, but for other parents, they would

:20:01. > :20:02.have saved from Wendy child was born to make an investment into their

:20:03. > :20:08.education. So it would be an investment.

:20:09. > :20:13.But boarding schools are still elitist?

:20:14. > :20:17.That might be a popular view, but the schools that I have seen have

:20:18. > :20:24.been very diverse. They cover every type of social spectrum.

:20:25. > :20:28.If you run a business and you get home late, some people would say

:20:29. > :20:33.that these are all your childcare issues at a cheap cost?

:20:34. > :20:37.Well, then that is a win win situation for families.

:20:38. > :20:47.Some people think it is cruelty to stand there children away. Is that

:20:48. > :20:50.the demands? Some people might feel that a

:20:51. > :20:55.boarding school is not appropriate for them, and that is fine. But for

:20:56. > :20:58.many young people, they have made the decisions about where they want

:20:59. > :21:02.to go to school, whether they want to go to a boarding school. We

:21:03. > :21:10.listen to that before we admit them into the school.

:21:11. > :21:16.The average parent will not be able to afford to ?12,000, and, they can

:21:17. > :21:21.buy a car and take the children to school?

:21:22. > :21:25.That is a limited view. It does not take into account the amount of time

:21:26. > :21:32.he would spend in that car when you could be out using the swimming pool

:21:33. > :21:38.where playing football. Much more interactive for them to be involved

:21:39. > :21:46.with the peers at school. Thank you.

:21:47. > :21:53.There aren't many of these schools around the country. State boarding

:21:54. > :21:57.schools. Good idea? Would you pay ?12,000 for your child to live at

:21:58. > :22:06.school withs give us your thoughts. Here is the number. The e`mail

:22:07. > :22:09.address as well. Yorkshire has been voted one of the

:22:10. > :22:15.best places in the world to visit next year. It came third in a list

:22:16. > :22:19.of the top ten world regions for 2014, compiled by the travel guide

:22:20. > :22:25.company Lonely Planet. The guide calls it a welcoming region of

:22:26. > :22:34.rugged merlins, Heritage homes and cosy pubs.

:22:35. > :22:37.The Scunthorpe United manager Brian Laws says they can't afford to take

:22:38. > :22:41.York City lightly tonight, as his side aims to go joint top in League

:22:42. > :22:44.Two. There's full commentary on BBC Radio Humberside. Sportstalk is on

:22:45. > :22:46.the air now Radio Lincolnshire has commentary of Lincoln City's FA Cup

:22:47. > :22:50.replay against Worcester. The game kicks off at 7:45pm.

:22:51. > :22:53.The royal palaces like the Tower of London and Hampton Court are among

:22:54. > :22:56.the most important historic buildings in the country, and their

:22:57. > :22:59.chief curator is a historian from Lincolnshire. Tracy Borman, who's

:23:00. > :23:02.from Scothern, began her love of history at school in Lincoln. Now

:23:03. > :23:07.it's her job to preserve and promote the palaces and research the lives

:23:08. > :23:21.of those who lived there. Jo Makel's been to meet her.

:23:22. > :23:27.The beauty and grandeur of Hampton Court Palace attracts visitors from

:23:28. > :23:33.all over the world. But we are getting to see behind`the`scenes of

:23:34. > :23:38.this historic Royal palaces. Chief curator Tracy Berman brought me to

:23:39. > :23:44.the collection store, and Aladdin's cave full of historic artefacts.

:23:45. > :23:49.This is one of my favourite artefacts. It would have been found

:23:50. > :23:54.in the kitchens in Tudor times. It was a massive court, so the cooks

:23:55. > :24:02.would have been very well and many of them would have cooked make it.

:24:03. > :24:12.`` make it. It is Tracey's job to work in the

:24:13. > :24:18.court. Only in the area where the royal family does not live. Her love

:24:19. > :24:23.of history began in Lincoln. It was Mrs Jones who was my history

:24:24. > :24:27.teacher. She completely inspired me. She transformed the way I

:24:28. > :24:32.thought about history. She said it was all about people and stories. It

:24:33. > :24:36.is not a dry facts, that is part of it, but it is about human

:24:37. > :24:44.motivations. Tracy went on to study and teach at

:24:45. > :24:46.Hull University. Generating the royal palaces and revealing the

:24:47. > :24:52.lives of the monarchs who shaped them she says is her dream job.

:24:53. > :24:59.This was built by King William III. It was his party house.

:25:00. > :25:05.Maintaining the courts was a hugely expensive.

:25:06. > :25:11.The role is one that she shares with Doctor Lucy, who presents

:25:12. > :25:18.documentaries on television. It was a stage where the future of

:25:19. > :25:21.the monarchy was played out. Tracy's is also using television,

:25:22. > :25:26.magazines and her own books to make history enjoyable to a wider

:25:27. > :25:33.audience. History has two compete with reality TV shows, overnight

:25:34. > :25:41.celebrity. It is good to make an appeal, as

:25:42. > :25:46.long as we don't have it `` done it down to much. It is important to

:25:47. > :25:51.make an impact. So, and interest inspired in our

:25:52. > :26:00.area has led Tracy to one of the best jobs in history.

:26:01. > :26:05.We will have a recount of the main headlines.

:26:06. > :26:14.Buses from the big energy companies face MP's questions. Tata Steel

:26:15. > :26:17.talk about the job is to be lost at their plant.

:26:18. > :26:24.If the weather, it would be a dry morning, then a better afternoon.

:26:25. > :26:30.The temperatures will be 12 Celsius. Here is our main story. The 340 jobs

:26:31. > :26:35.at threats at Tata Steel in Scunthorpe. Our reporter is at the

:26:36. > :26:40.factory. What will happen now? The consultation process begins between

:26:41. > :26:45.management and the unions. The company said that it hopes to
