:00:00. > :00:13.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. The headlines tonight. Police

:00:14. > :00:35.thank the truckers helping them catch criminals at the Humber ports.

:00:36. > :00:38.As you can see, it was well alight. Flaming fridges ` a family and

:00:39. > :00:42.Trading Standards warn people to check their appliances. The moment

:00:43. > :00:44.the tidal surge breached flood defences ` captured on street

:00:45. > :00:47.cameras. And how a 14`year`old boy created

:00:48. > :01:01.something special for other children in his local pub. Join me for the

:01:02. > :01:05.very latest weather forecast. Thousands of lorry drivers who use

:01:06. > :01:09.the Humber Ports have helped police catch smugglers targeting the area.

:01:10. > :01:14.Hauliers are being asked to give anonymous tip`offs about anything

:01:15. > :01:18.suspicious they see at the docks. In the last year, it's helped to stop

:01:19. > :01:23.thousands of pounds worth of illegal goods getting on to the streets.

:01:24. > :01:26.Nine other police forces are now using the same tactics as Humberside

:01:27. > :01:37.Police. Queuing up for the overnight ferry

:01:38. > :01:41.crossing from Hull to Rotterdam. I am from the police, there is nothing

:01:42. > :01:44.to worry about. As hauliers wait, it's a chance for Det Sergeant

:01:45. > :01:50.Laurie McIntyre and his officers to check if there's been any suspicious

:01:51. > :01:54.activity. They can see people getting into the back of wagons,

:01:55. > :01:59.they are being approached in Europe and in the UK. They are asked to

:02:00. > :02:02.carry packages for a feud thousand pounds. We are trying to get the

:02:03. > :02:05.honest drivers to ring Crimestoppers. It's impossible for

:02:06. > :02:08.them to check every lorry here. Andrew regularly travels through

:02:09. > :02:18.Hull to get between Ireland and Holland. Sometimes, it is to help us

:02:19. > :02:25.and the security of what we are doing as well as everybody else.

:02:26. > :02:29.They shouldn't be coming in. The trade of illegal goods spreads out

:02:30. > :02:39.along the M62 corridor and across Britain ` often the final link in an

:02:40. > :02:44.international chain of crime. More than a million passengers use the

:02:45. > :02:48.port every year. It is one of the busiest frock `` ports for freight.

:02:49. > :02:52.Intelligence information is vital to control what comes in and out of the

:02:53. > :03:00.UK. In the last year, police have worked with 3000 drivers. In terms

:03:01. > :03:03.of the cigarettes coming through, it is ?2.7 million worth of duty that

:03:04. > :03:10.would have been lost at those cigarettes come through. They seized

:03:11. > :03:14.a containment of fake cigarettes and had gone to the public, it would

:03:15. > :03:17.have caused serious health issues. And Crimestoppers are now getting

:03:18. > :03:25.many more tip offs the authorities can act on. What has been a

:03:26. > :03:29.Humberside project is gathering pace and going across the UK. Information

:03:30. > :03:33.has shot through the roof. They don't want to be caught up in any

:03:34. > :03:36.smuggling or human trafficking. So those who use the docks are helping

:03:37. > :03:39.to close down the opportunities smugglers have exploited and making

:03:40. > :03:45.sure nothing and no one comes back across the water illegally.

:03:46. > :03:48.Sarah joins me in the studio now. More illegal goods are being found

:03:49. > :03:53.at the ports, so are these tactics deterring criminals? Well the worry

:03:54. > :03:56.is that as one port tightens up security, smugglers look for another

:03:57. > :04:01.route in, targeting a different UK port. But this operation is now

:04:02. > :04:08.being used by nine other forces, including the entire Scottish police

:04:09. > :04:12.force. Officers are starting to work with German and Polish drivers at

:04:13. > :04:15.foreign ports. And it may seem like common sense, asking those who use

:04:16. > :04:19.the docks to pass on information about what they see. But before

:04:20. > :04:22.this, hauliers were reluctant to speak out, partly due to worries

:04:23. > :04:27.about their safety. So it helps that information is anonymous. Now even

:04:28. > :04:32.if drivers carry illegal items without their knowledge, they're the

:04:33. > :04:35.ones who are punished. So it's in their interest to keep the smugglers

:04:36. > :04:38.out. In a moment, faster internet in the

:04:39. > :04:44.villages that pestered the big companies for better broadband.

:04:45. > :04:51.A fire caused by a faulty fridge freezer has forced a family from

:04:52. > :04:54.Hull to move out of their home. The Clarke family saw their kitchen

:04:55. > :04:58.destroyed and according to firefighters were only saved from

:04:59. > :05:01.serious injury by their smoke alarm. The fire started because of an

:05:02. > :05:06.electrical fault in their Beko brand appliance. Hull City Council Trading

:05:07. > :05:07.Standards are now warning other householders to check all Beko

:05:08. > :05:17.fridge freezers. This is what was left of the Clark's

:05:18. > :05:28.family kitchen after their fridge went up in flames. As you can see

:05:29. > :05:32.from the charring, it was well allow `` well alight in a short space of

:05:33. > :05:37.time. On the November first they were woken up just before seven in

:05:38. > :05:41.the morning by their smoke alarm. Opened the door and the first thing

:05:42. > :05:45.I saw was the fridge freezer and flames everywhere. It is not the

:05:46. > :05:50.sort of thing you would expect to see a fire from. It can get very

:05:51. > :05:53.toxic and another few minutes could have made the difference between

:05:54. > :05:57.life and death. And it's not the first time a Beko fridge has caught

:05:58. > :06:00.fire. The company began recalling nearly half a million products in

:06:01. > :06:04.2010 after the London Fire Brigade linked certain models to 20 fires

:06:05. > :06:13.leaving 15 people injured and one person dead. The website warns some

:06:14. > :06:18.fridge freezer models manufactured between 2000 and 2006 could catch

:06:19. > :06:22.fire because of a faulty defrost time. Many have been found and

:06:23. > :06:25.repairs but there is still a number that haven't yet been identified.

:06:26. > :06:29.The company says it deeply regrets any incident involving any Beko

:06:30. > :06:36.product and is making a free of charge modification to all affected

:06:37. > :06:41.models. People don't understand or realise when these products have

:06:42. > :06:44.been recalled. Sometimes that is the fault of the manufacturer and they

:06:45. > :06:47.haven't managed to keep track of where those products have done. Hull

:06:48. > :06:51.City Council has urged residents to check the model of their fridge

:06:52. > :06:58.freezer. It says it doesn't want any other homes or lives put at risk. We

:06:59. > :07:03.would like people to take a look at their fridge. If it is a Beko and if

:07:04. > :07:06.they bought it before 2006, they need to check whether it needs

:07:07. > :07:10.repairing. The Clarks say they think more could have been done to warn

:07:11. > :07:13.customers about the fridges but say they've been satisfied with the

:07:14. > :07:20.support since the fire. They hope to move back home this weekend.

:07:21. > :07:26.Police have released CCTV pictures of three people they want to talk to

:07:27. > :07:29.about an attack on the Imam of Hull. The footage shows two men and a

:07:30. > :07:35.woman walking along Princes Avenue in the city on the night of 30th

:07:36. > :07:46.November. Rahmat Aziz Salik may lose the sight in one of his eyes after

:07:47. > :07:50.being attacked on Spring Bank West. One of the largest shareholders in

:07:51. > :07:51.Lincoln City Football Club is being investigated over alleged financial

:07:52. > :07:54.discrepancies. Lincolnshire Police have confirmed they are looking into

:07:55. > :07:58.the Lincoln City Supporters Trust, who were formed in 2001. The Trust

:07:59. > :08:13.say their account has been hacked and money has been stolen from it.

:08:14. > :08:16.Hospitals are urging people not to go to the city A because they are

:08:17. > :08:24.struggling with the number of patients. The Government's committed

:08:25. > :08:27.?1 million for a road scheme in East Yorkshire. The Department for

:08:28. > :08:30.Transport has pledged the money for the improvement to Holme Road

:08:31. > :08:33.Roundabout at Market Weighton, where there have been a number of

:08:34. > :08:36.accidents in recent years. It's been a day of traffic misery

:08:37. > :08:40.for commuters in Hull. This morning a broken down lorry and the closure

:08:41. > :08:43.of a major road caused hours of delays for drivers, and tonight

:08:44. > :08:47.there are more problems as people made their way home. Linsey Smith is

:08:48. > :08:51.in our newsroom. Linsey, how bad has it been? Well the chaos started this

:08:52. > :08:56.morning at eight o'clock when there was a broken down lorry on the A63

:08:57. > :09:01.in the centre of Hull. One lane had to be closed causing traffic to back

:09:02. > :09:05.up as far as the Humber Bridge. Some drivers said it added more than an

:09:06. > :09:09.hour onto their usual journey time. It took three hours for the lane to

:09:10. > :09:12.re`open and only now traffic is beginning to ease, more than five

:09:13. > :09:15.hours after that lorry broke down. And this all coincided with the

:09:16. > :09:18.start of one of Hull's busiest roads, Spring Bank West, being

:09:19. > :09:22.closed from today for the next two weeks while a railway bridge is

:09:23. > :09:25.re`built. This road closure and the broken down lorry led to big delays

:09:26. > :09:32.for many motorists on routes right across west Hull. Tonight we are

:09:33. > :09:40.getting reports that roads out of the city have been blocked with

:09:41. > :09:47.traffic. Commuters can expect delays.

:09:48. > :09:53.The owners of a North Lincolnshire hotel damaged by the coastal flood

:09:54. > :09:57.say they have closed. Several customers have told the BBC they are

:09:58. > :10:11.struggling to get in touch with the Reeds Country Hotel about their

:10:12. > :10:18.Christmas bookings. Street camera pictures of how Boston

:10:19. > :10:23.was flooded to have been released. We have been looking at those

:10:24. > :10:29.pictures. This was the moment on the evening of Thursday 5th of December

:10:30. > :10:32.when Boston's CCTV system caught the flood defences being overwhelmed.

:10:33. > :10:36.Sea water had surged down the eastern coast of England whipped up

:10:37. > :10:42.by a storm and made worse by a high tide. The water here trickling into

:10:43. > :10:46.Church Lane close to the offices of the Boston standard newspaper which

:10:47. > :10:51.would soon be flooded. Today, businesses on that street are open

:10:52. > :10:55.once more as life returns to normal. Those involved in organising the

:10:56. > :10:59.clean`up now plan a flood aid concert to raise money for the

:11:00. > :11:07.victims. It would help the community and the businesses to trade again.

:11:08. > :11:12.It has been amazing. We have put a Facebook page up for flood aid a few

:11:13. > :11:21.days ago and we have 1000 likes on it within a few hours. Local

:11:22. > :11:26.businesses are showing their support. We have the backing of the

:11:27. > :11:31.whole community. On that dramatic evening less than two weeks ago,

:11:32. > :11:35.Street in Boston looked liked canals. Wheelie bins washed away by

:11:36. > :11:41.the water and this police 4x4 showing the depths of the water. In

:11:42. > :11:49.the residential areas, 450 properties were flooded. Liz was one

:11:50. > :11:55.of those forced to flee her home. It could be months before she could

:11:56. > :12:00.live here again. Coffee tables, TV, a small sofa, dining room table and

:12:01. > :12:07.chairs, fridge freezer, Corker, tumble dryer, washing machine, pots,

:12:08. > :12:14.pans, there is nothing left. What the events were living memories of

:12:15. > :12:17.Boston for some time. With another high tide forecast for the 1st of

:12:18. > :12:22.January, it has led to calls for the speeding up the plans for a flood

:12:23. > :12:28.barrier for the time `` town so it seems like this will never happen

:12:29. > :12:33.again. Amazing pictures there. Good luck to

:12:34. > :12:37.those involved with the flood concert.

:12:38. > :12:46.Still ahead tonight: The Grimsby Santa's grotto created by a teenager

:12:47. > :12:54.to raise money for poorly children. Jack coming this is your favourite

:12:55. > :12:57.bit. Why is that? It is my favourite bit because it is Santa 's grotto

:12:58. > :13:07.and this is where the kids come in and get their present.

:13:08. > :13:10.That is a lovely story. Now for the pictures. A clear starry night at

:13:11. > :13:20.Claxby radar station near Caistor by Simon Boone.

:13:21. > :13:22.Good evening young man. Now for this one. Dogs Nativity by Nicola Jackson

:13:23. > :13:34.whose dogs live in Friskney. Joseph is looking a bit fed up

:13:35. > :13:50.there. He has a towel on his head! The headline is very unsettled. We

:13:51. > :13:54.are expecting rain to spread north eastwards. The heaviest of the rain

:13:55. > :14:01.will be reserved for tomorrow night. There would be a

:14:02. > :14:08.strengthening southerly wind. It has been a lovely day with sunshine all

:14:09. > :14:14.around. We have a ground frost already in places. The cloud will

:14:15. > :14:20.move in and it would being prepped `` patchy rain into Lincolnshire.

:14:21. > :14:31.Lowest temperatures down to one Celsius. The sun will rise at 815

:14:32. > :14:45.AM. Through the morning, that cloud will

:14:46. > :14:48.increase and it will bring patchy outbreaks of rain into east

:14:49. > :14:51.Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. There will be some dry slots in between

:14:52. > :15:00.the bands of rain but it will turn into a grey, damp and miserable day.

:15:01. > :15:04.The wind will strengthen from the south`west and eventually we will

:15:05. > :15:08.get into the milder air. It will be a late thing where we will see

:15:09. > :15:14.temperatures of around nine Celsius in Gainsborough. Wednesday night

:15:15. > :15:20.looks very wet indeed. There could be localised flooding in places

:15:21. > :15:23.together with a strong wind. By first light on Thursday morning, it

:15:24. > :15:29.is clear again. Thursday looks pretty decent. There is a chilly

:15:30. > :15:31.wind and it is mostly dry with some sunshine. There is more rain to come

:15:32. > :15:41.on Friday night. This is my favourite e`mail. We are

:15:42. > :15:46.big fans of the pogrom and although we live in North Wales we get a

:15:47. > :15:53.signal for some reason. They watch every night.

:15:54. > :16:02.Do they want a forecast? It is cold on Mount Snowdon.

:16:03. > :16:09.I think I could have done that. Campaigners for high speed broadband

:16:10. > :16:14.in two North Lincolnshire villages are celebrating after getting the

:16:15. > :16:17.service installed in their homes. Residents in the Stallingbrough area

:16:18. > :16:22.were left out of a Government scheme to bring fast internet access to

:16:23. > :16:25.rural areas. But that didn't deter them and as our Business

:16:26. > :16:27.Correspondent Paul Murphy reports, they've now done a deal with a major

:16:28. > :16:37.broadband provider. For nearly two years this community

:16:38. > :16:44.has been camping to get connected to what they say is a vital utility.

:16:45. > :16:50.High`speed broadband is now being installed here offering new ways for

:16:51. > :16:55.people to work and play. To be able to access the online content I need

:16:56. > :17:00.for school and being able to get remote access has been really

:17:01. > :17:05.important. In the past, we would have to turn and lots of devices off

:17:06. > :17:10.in the house. Everything from online shopping to remote working now needs

:17:11. > :17:16.a fast connection. 700 people in these villages have signed up. Not

:17:17. > :17:19.so much for me but the younger people like to be on the Internet.

:17:20. > :17:25.We have been waiting and found out that it was coming. It is only here

:17:26. > :17:30.because local people took matters into their own hands. This community

:17:31. > :17:34.is one of several in our area to have mist out on a government scheme

:17:35. > :17:46.to bring high`speed broadband to rural areas. `` missed out. I hope

:17:47. > :17:49.this serves as an example to other communities that they don't have to

:17:50. > :18:01.put up with substandard services. If they are not happy, it means they

:18:02. > :18:04.can get together. They are spending ?530 million to roll out high`speed

:18:05. > :18:08.broadband. One of the big slices goes to Lincolnshire with just over

:18:09. > :18:14.?40 million of funding. North and North East Link and share the

:18:15. > :18:18.smaller sum of 3.1 million and across the Humber in the east

:18:19. > :18:20.Yorkshire, more than ?5 million has been approved though in Hull, no

:18:21. > :18:26.funding has been given because of their commitment by the local

:18:27. > :18:31.provider to deliver fast broadband. Places which don't get this funding

:18:32. > :18:34.must continue to try to persuade broadband suppliers to come in and

:18:35. > :18:41.in these North Lincolnshire villagers, they are pretty proud

:18:42. > :18:44.that they have achieved this. I spoke to Andrew Ferguson from

:18:45. > :18:49.thinkbroadband.com which provides information about internet services.

:18:50. > :18:52.I asked why local people were still having to find their own broadband

:18:53. > :18:59.providers, in spite of the super fast broadband roll out by the

:19:00. > :19:04.government. The problem is a national aim is 90% will have

:19:05. > :19:10.superfast broadband. People believe they will be in that last 10%. They

:19:11. > :19:15.are doing it themselves to make sure they don't miss out and wait even

:19:16. > :19:21.longer to get any benefits. Why is it so hit and miss? It is a problem

:19:22. > :19:24.with statistics. The whole project was planned nationally and it has

:19:25. > :19:30.been passed down to the county levels. It is easy for one or two

:19:31. > :19:33.postcodes or villagers to be overlooked or stop are there some

:19:34. > :19:42.places that will never get superfast broadband any time soon?

:19:43. > :19:52.Places of six to eight houses, it is 2018 before you get anything. Hull

:19:53. > :20:05.is unique. We lucky not to have Casey in this city? `` K C. It is a

:20:06. > :20:12.good thing. They have said they will by 2020 get everyone on good speeds.

:20:13. > :20:15.2020 is a long time away. This variation across the country and

:20:16. > :20:27.across our patch, it really hacks people off, does net? They have

:20:28. > :20:36.heard a lot of it and have not seen anything happen for a couple of

:20:37. > :20:40.years. We are among the five European countries and by 2015 as

:20:41. > :20:47.long as they don't play a catch up game and bypass cars, which would

:20:48. > :20:54.keep that crown. Best advice if you haven't got it? Group together and

:20:55. > :20:58.pester your councillors, pester your MP. Find out what is going on and

:20:59. > :21:05.what public air `` public money is being spent in your area. Tell me

:21:06. > :21:08.your experience of broadband where you live and how you'll be affected

:21:09. > :21:34.if you can't access superfast broadband Scunthorpe United have

:21:35. > :21:40.Scunthorpe United have re`signed their former striker Paul Hayes from

:21:41. > :21:43.Brentford. It'll be his third spell at the club where he formed a

:21:44. > :21:46.formidable partnership with Gary Hooper. Hayes he'll not be eligible

:21:47. > :21:50.to play until the fourth of January because of FA rules.

:21:51. > :21:55.The Irish international, Paul McShane, says Hull City have made a

:21:56. > :21:58.solid start as the Premier League season reaches its mid`point. He

:21:59. > :22:01.shared a stage with fellow international Robbie Brady at a

:22:02. > :22:10.meeting of Tigers' supporters in East Yorkshire last night. Here's

:22:11. > :22:15.our sports reporter Simon Clark. A busy day for Hull city in their

:22:16. > :22:19.community yesterday. Hours after the entire first team wastes the poorly

:22:20. > :22:27.children at Hull Royal infirmary well, there was an Irish taste of

:22:28. > :22:32.the official list. Paul McShane offered his views on the season so

:22:33. > :22:36.far and the season ahead. We have given ourselves a good chance and we

:22:37. > :22:44.have been quite solid. We have performed well against all the

:22:45. > :22:51.teams. We heard we were in Christmas Day. It is a good feel about it

:22:52. > :22:54.being Christmas Day. There is a lot of games on consecutive days so we

:22:55. > :22:57.are looking forward to a tough challenge ahead but hopefully pick

:22:58. > :23:03.up some more points. Both have played their point `` part which

:23:04. > :23:09.sees them approaching 12th place and 19 points. A good return for the

:23:10. > :23:15.club. Things are going well at the moment. We have to build on it and

:23:16. > :23:20.in January, it we may have a few additional signings. We are looking

:23:21. > :23:25.all right. Steve Bruce has his eye on the January transfer window and

:23:26. > :23:31.has taken a Dutch striker on trial until the end of the week.

:23:32. > :23:35.A 14`year`old boy from Grimsby has created a winter wonderland to try

:23:36. > :23:39.and raise money for charity. Jack Barbour who is recovering from a

:23:40. > :23:42.rare form of cancer wanted to help other children who are suffering.

:23:43. > :23:46.It's due to open this weekend at The Mariners Rest which he built with
