:00:00. > :00:00.10:10pm. the farming industry. We will be

:00:00. > :00:11.back with the late news Hello and welcome to Look North.

:00:12. > :00:14.Farmers in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire are asking party goers

:00:15. > :00:17.not to release sky lanterns this New Year's Eve. The small hot air

:00:18. > :00:21.balloons which are made of paper have been linked to fires and the

:00:22. > :00:27.death of livestock when the fallen litter is eaten by cattle. But

:00:28. > :00:33.unlike other countries, the Government hasn't imposed a ban.

:00:34. > :00:40.Linsey Smith reports. A spectacular skyline, or flying

:00:41. > :00:45.bonfires. These lanterns cause real concern to cattle farmers like Chris

:00:46. > :00:48.Hewis. I couldn't understand why they were all gathered together

:00:49. > :00:51.around the hedgerow, and what I found was these three sky lanterns

:00:52. > :00:57.that were trapped in the hedgerow there. I was alarmed cos it's fallen

:00:58. > :01:00.just 20 metres short of a straw stack, which would've gone up in

:01:01. > :01:05.flames. Chris is asking partygoers not to release them this New Year's

:01:06. > :01:09.Eve. Our neighbour lost a bull. After a wedding in the village,

:01:10. > :01:13.there was lots of sky lanterns sent off. Shortly afterwards, they lost a

:01:14. > :01:17.bull ` it died. The results of a postmortem showed that it had the

:01:18. > :01:24.wire from a sky lantern in it. Lanterns are not just a problem for

:01:25. > :01:26.cattle. A barn owl died in Gloucestershire after becoming

:01:27. > :01:29.entangled in the wire frame. Lanterns, on the left, have been

:01:30. > :01:38.mistaken for distress flares, on the right. It's caused the RNLI to rush

:01:39. > :01:47.to false alarms. And ?6 million worth of fire damage was caused at a

:01:48. > :01:50.recyling plant near Birmingham. Moments before it ignited, CCTV

:01:51. > :01:53.shows a sky lantern drifting into piles of plastic. They're very

:01:54. > :01:57.cheap, aren't they, they're, what, two for ?1, and they're sold as a

:01:58. > :02:01.way to make a wish, but frankly, the wish that we've got and that I hope

:02:02. > :02:04.now that everyone who's listening to this realises how dangerous they can

:02:05. > :02:08.be, the wish is that actually no`one will use them at New Year

:02:09. > :02:12.celebrations, and we can bring in a ban through district councils.

:02:13. > :02:13.Depsite these lanterns being banned in countries including Australia and

:02:14. > :02:29.Germany, Defra have told us: For Chris, New Year's Day will start

:02:30. > :02:32.with early checks to his land for lantern debris.

:02:33. > :02:36.At the moment, it's the only way to ensure his cattle don't get an extra

:02:37. > :02:39.meal which may be their last. A woman's died after being found

:02:40. > :02:44.with life`threatening injuries at a flat on Peel Place in Hull.

:02:45. > :02:47.23`year`old Rebecca Day was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary in the early

:02:48. > :02:53.hours of Sunday morning, but died earlier today. A postmortem

:02:54. > :02:56.examination will now take place to establish how she died. A

:02:57. > :02:59.27`year`old man has been arrested and is being questioned by the

:03:00. > :03:03.police. A man has been charged with arson

:03:04. > :03:07.and endangering the lives of almost 1,000 fellow passengers on a North

:03:08. > :03:11.Sea ferry. Six people were winched to safety after the fire late on

:03:12. > :03:17.Saturday night just off the Yorkshire coast. 26`year`old Boden

:03:18. > :03:23.Hughes has been charged with arson and affray.

:03:24. > :03:26.Prison inspectors say there aren't enough medical staff at Lincoln

:03:27. > :03:29.Prison to properly meet inmates' health needs. The jail was inspected

:03:30. > :03:32.by the Care Quality Commission in November. The report also

:03:33. > :03:41.highlighted concerns about the way prisoners had to queue to get

:03:42. > :03:44.medication. The Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Trust says it's been

:03:45. > :03:47.working with the prison governor to make improvements.

:03:48. > :03:50.Now I'm sure the Christmas leftovers have gone by now, but one company in

:03:51. > :03:55.East Yorkshire is working flat out to do it on an industrial scale.

:03:56. > :04:05.Brocklesby in Brough converts old cooking oil and waste food into

:04:06. > :04:09.biodiesel and biofuels. It's one of only a handful of factories in the

:04:10. > :04:12.country but it's already a growing industry. Sarah Walton reports.

:04:13. > :04:15.It's not the most appetising sight, but this is what's left over when

:04:16. > :04:23.you cook large amounts of meat. Now, it's getting a new lease of life. We

:04:24. > :04:26.take a range of products from food manufacturers and retailers across

:04:27. > :04:29.the UK and Ireland ranging from oils recovered from rotisseries within

:04:30. > :04:32.the supermarkets, right through to oils recovered from frying pans at

:04:33. > :04:35.crisp manufacturers to produce a biofuel. We use a lot of steam to

:04:36. > :04:38.heat our products and then centifruges to spin out any

:04:39. > :04:44.impurities, to leave a very refined oil. Here in the control room, you

:04:45. > :04:50.can see computers monitoring the reactors. Now, they process about

:04:51. > :04:53.10,000 tonnes of food waste and 50,000 tonnes of oil every year, and

:04:54. > :04:59.are operating 24/7, even through Christmas and the New Year. But

:05:00. > :05:02.while they deal with industrial waste here, we're all being asked to

:05:03. > :05:05.think carefully about leftovers. Earlier this year, fat washed down

:05:06. > :05:13.people's sinks formed the biggest blockage ever found in London

:05:14. > :05:16.sewers, weighing 16 tonnes. Back at the factory, tankers arrive to

:05:17. > :05:26.collect the final product ` 55 million litres of biofuel a year.

:05:27. > :05:30.This goes into diesel cars and lorries. Biofuel is blended with

:05:31. > :05:34.diesel and would be part of the blend you would get at a supermarket

:05:35. > :05:39.or a filling station around the country. It's a dirty job, but

:05:40. > :05:42.biofuel production is a growing industry, and there's hope more

:05:43. > :05:54.companies will start work, turning brown sludge into green fuel.

:05:55. > :05:57.Let's move to sport now, and Scunthorpe United extended their

:05:58. > :06:00.unbeaten run to seven games after beating Oxford United 2`0 yesterday.

:06:01. > :06:03.The Iron now start the new year joint top of the table in League Two

:06:04. > :06:05.on points, just behind Chesterfield on goal difference. Simon Spark

:06:06. > :06:09.reports. It took Scunthorpe united 11 minutes

:06:10. > :06:13.before a cross from Marcus Williams landed perfectly on the head of Deon

:06:14. > :06:17.Burton. This was Burton's fourth goal in as many games for the Iron,

:06:18. > :06:21.and the gap could have been widened, but the chance of a penalty after a

:06:22. > :06:25.handball from Oxford United's Deane Smalley wasn't to be. Instead, the

:06:26. > :06:29.Iron's second goal would come from David Syers in a much better second

:06:30. > :06:32.half. Oxford's best chance came when goalkeeper Sam Slocombe received a

:06:33. > :06:35.yellow card for this foul against James Constable, but managed to

:06:36. > :06:42.correctly predict a save to stop Dean Smalley's attempt. This victory

:06:43. > :06:45.puts them second in the table to Chesterfield with only goal

:06:46. > :06:51.difference between them. A joint top start to the new year.

:06:52. > :06:55.Some of Tom Huddlestone's hair, which was cut off after he scored

:06:56. > :07:00.for Hull City at the weekend, is being auctioned for charity. The

:07:01. > :07:09.midfielder scored his first goal in two`and`a half years against Fulham

:07:10. > :07:12.at the weekend. After scoring for Tottenham in 2011, he pledged to

:07:13. > :07:15.raise money for charity by not cutting his hair until he next found

:07:16. > :07:18.the net. There have been strong winds across

:07:19. > :07:21.much of our region today. This was the scene at Kilnsea in East

:07:22. > :07:25.Yorkshire where high winds battered the coast. Elsewhere 48 mile an hour

:07:26. > :07:27.winds were recored at RAF Scamton, while gusts topped 50 miles an hour

:07:28. > :07:34.in Bridlington and 53 at Donna Nook. Good evening. Well, as the wet and

:07:35. > :07:37.blustery weather front today clears away, it's drier and clearer for

:07:38. > :07:41.much of the night. Cloud thickens up again later. Might see one or two

:07:42. > :07:52.showers sneaking in to the west by the end of the night. Four Celsius,

:07:53. > :07:55.your overnight low. A breeze already starting to pick up. Those showers

:07:56. > :07:59.become more widespread tomorrow morning. Eventually, there'll be a

:08:00. > :08:01.more persistent band of rain spreading from the west, late

:08:02. > :08:06.morning, early afternoon, although most places do dry up again by the

:08:07. > :08:08.end of the day with a bit of brightness. Fresher than today,

:08:09. > :08:11.maybe not as windy, temperatures peaking at nine Celsius in Lincoln.

:08:12. > :08:15.That's 48 Fahrenheit. If you're out and about tomorrow night bringing in

:08:16. > :08:18.the New Year, most places should have some dry weather, still breezy,

:08:19. > :08:21.maybe just the odd shower somewhere like Sheffield, and then if you're

:08:22. > :08:25.out and about on New Year's Day itself, well, the next band of wet

:08:26. > :08:29.and windy weather spreads in from the west, through the course of the

:08:30. > :08:30.day, before we're back to brighter spells and blustery showers on

:08:31. > :08:43.Thursday. Bye for Another day off strong winds, heavy

:08:44. > :08:47.rain and flooding. At least things are quiet at the moment. The rain

:08:48. > :08:52.has cleared off and the wind is lighter. There might be some ice in

:08:53. > :08:59.Scotland, but through the night the wind picks up, lifting temperatures,

:09:00. > :09:04.but more heavy rain pushing in. The rain band is not quite a significant

:09:05. > :09:07.us today, but it will leave surface water flooding. Some heavy bursts

:09:08. > :09:08.clearing Northern Ireland by first
