:00:00. > :00:00.on the BBC News Channel. I'm back with the News at Ten. Now it's time
:00:00. > :00:00.for the latest where you evening on the BBC News Channel, but
:00:00. > :00:11.I'm back at 10pm. Hello and welcome to Look North.
:00:12. > :00:14.A man has appeared before magistrates in North Shields accused
:00:15. > :00:18.of causing a fire on a North Sea Ferry. Six people had to be winched
:00:19. > :00:23.off the DFDS ship just off Bridlington on Saturday night. It
:00:24. > :00:29.has been revealed that the cost of the damage could be more than
:00:30. > :00:33.?800,000. Damian O'Neil reports. The King Seaways ferry was 25 miles
:00:34. > :00:38.offshore on a regular overnight sailing to Amsterdam when a fire
:00:39. > :00:43.broke out in a cabin. RAF helicopters airlifted six people to
:00:44. > :00:46.hospital after breathing in smoke. A man was detained on board and this
:00:47. > :00:52.morning 26`year`old Boden George Hughes from Sunderland appeared at
:00:53. > :00:57.North Tyneside Magistrates' Court. He is accused of affray and arson.
:00:58. > :01:01.Hughes appeared in the dock wearing a grey sweatshirt and jeans. He
:01:02. > :01:05.spoke only to confirm his name and address. The court heard that the
:01:06. > :01:11.cost of the damage caused by the fire was estimated at ?815,000. He
:01:12. > :01:20.was remanded into custody and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court on
:01:21. > :01:24.the 14th of January. The premature death rate for men in
:01:25. > :01:29.Hull with a serious lung disease is double the national average. Local
:01:30. > :01:34.health officials say around 7,000 people in the city have Chronic
:01:35. > :01:37.Obstructive Pulminary Disease. But there are fears that there are
:01:38. > :01:40.thousands more people with the condition who haven't yet been
:01:41. > :01:45.diagnosed. More from our health correspondent, Vicky Johnson.
:01:46. > :01:50.Sandra finds it difficult to breathe because she has COPD, the name for a
:01:51. > :01:53.collection of chronic lung diseases. But special exercise programmes,
:01:54. > :01:57.like this one in East Hull, can help. We've proven that we can
:01:58. > :02:04.actually improve their standard of the lung function, although that's
:02:05. > :02:09.not a given. They'll also improve on the distance that they're able to
:02:10. > :02:13.walk. We know we're not going to get any better but we have to cope with
:02:14. > :02:19.it and these...these show us how to do it. After the end of the session,
:02:20. > :02:22.you know, like six weeks, you feel a lot better. It's the actual walking
:02:23. > :02:26.that's getting me, walking round and round. It's getting better in me
:02:27. > :02:30.legs. But before they can take steps to improve their health, people need
:02:31. > :02:33.a diagnosis. It's thought many thousands of
:02:34. > :02:36.people here in Hull don't even realise they have COPD because they
:02:37. > :02:42.put their increasing breathlessness down to ageing or simply being a
:02:43. > :02:45.smoker. The sooner the condition can be diagnosed, and treatment begins,
:02:46. > :02:50.the less chance there is of serious lung damage.
:02:51. > :02:54.While there is still no cure for the disease, new drug treatments will
:02:55. > :02:58.offer relief from some of the worst symptoms. A lot of people die in
:02:59. > :03:02.hospital from these breathing attacks that they get. If we can
:03:03. > :03:06.prevent the attacks coming on, which is the main thing we're trying to do
:03:07. > :03:12.with the drug treatment, then that will decrease the mortality from
:03:13. > :03:16.this horrible disease. Blow! Keep going, keep going. The number of
:03:17. > :03:19.local people with COPD is likely to remain among the highest in the
:03:20. > :03:23.country until smoking rates are drastically reduced. Meanwhile,
:03:24. > :03:31.thousands could be struggling on alone because they've haven't yet
:03:32. > :03:34.got a diagnosis. A 27`year`old man being questioned
:03:35. > :03:38.following the death of a woman in Hull has been released on police
:03:39. > :03:42.bail. 23`year`old Rebecca Day died at Hull Royal Infirmary in the early
:03:43. > :03:47.hours of Sunday morning. She had been found at a flat on Peel Place
:03:48. > :03:50.with serious injuries. The police have confirmed her death is being
:03:51. > :03:57.treated as suspicious and their investigations are continuing.
:03:58. > :04:00.Fire fighters across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire have started a six
:04:01. > :04:04.hour strike. Crews walked out just moments ago, at 6:30. It's the
:04:05. > :04:07.eighth time since September that industrial action has been taken.
:04:08. > :04:15.It's because of a row between the Fire Brigades' Union and the
:04:16. > :04:19.Government over pensions. The resolve of firefighters is getting
:04:20. > :04:24.stronger. We have massive public support and they realise that they
:04:25. > :04:26.do not want to see 60`year`old firefighters responding to
:04:27. > :04:30.emergencies and there are no background jobs. Every firefighter
:04:31. > :04:33.is still in the service at 60 then they will be in the fire engines.
:04:34. > :04:36.A lack of volunteers means that street pastors won't be out on the
:04:37. > :04:38.streets of Lincoln tonight. Volunteers from local churches
:04:39. > :04:42.usually patrol the city centre, helping anyone in need. But there
:04:43. > :04:46.aren't enough people available. It's the first time in six years that the
:04:47. > :04:48.group has been unable to go out on New Year's Eve.
:04:49. > :04:52.A Lincolnshire Councillor says he will sue the leader of UKIP, Nigel
:04:53. > :04:56.Farage, over comments he's made in the press about him. Chris Pain
:04:57. > :05:00.became a UKIP councillor in May but was later expelled from the party.
:05:01. > :05:04.He's told the BBC that he will challenge the decision to expel him
:05:05. > :05:09.in the High Court and he'll also sue Nigel Farage for defamation of
:05:10. > :05:12.character. A couple from Lincolnshire who
:05:13. > :05:15.raised thousands of pounds for Hull Royal Infirmary are among those to
:05:16. > :05:20.be recognised in the New Years Honours List. Tony. And Ruth Knowles
:05:21. > :05:33.from Sutton on Sea will receive the British Empire Medal, as Jake
:05:34. > :05:36.Zuckerman reports. `` Tony and Ruth. Tony and Ruth Knowles have raised
:05:37. > :05:39.?134,000 for equipment for Hull Royal Infirmary. Their daughter,
:05:40. > :05:42.Emma Jane, was treated there for a brain tumour but passed away in
:05:43. > :05:45.1998. The couple have both been awarded the British Empire Medal. It
:05:46. > :05:49.means a tremendous amount. And, also, it's not only just for us,
:05:50. > :05:52.it's for all our friends and everybody that's helped us over the
:05:53. > :05:55.last 15 years. Also receiving the BEM is Odette Mitchell from North
:05:56. > :05:58.Ferriby, a volunteer instructor at Hull Kung Fu Club. I don't expect
:05:59. > :06:02.anything in return, I enjoy doing that. It's really nice to know that
:06:03. > :06:07.people have appreciated what I've done, yeah. During Odette's time at
:06:08. > :06:13.the club, dozens of vulnerable youngsters have received her help
:06:14. > :06:17.and support. Let's find out what the weather has
:06:18. > :06:17.in store for the rest of New Year's Eve.
:06:18. > :06:19.Let's find out what the weather has in store Paul Mooney has the
:06:20. > :06:22.forecast. Good evening. Well, if you're out
:06:23. > :06:25.and about seeing in the New Year, not looking too bad overnight. One
:06:26. > :06:29.or two showers creeping into western areas so you're more likely to catch
:06:30. > :06:32.a shower in Sheffield than you are in Skegness. Most places do stay
:06:33. > :06:36.dry. It will feel chilly, though. Temperatures down to three or four
:06:37. > :06:40.Celsius at the lowest. And breezy with it, as well. So we start off
:06:41. > :06:44.dry on New Year's Day. Make the most of that while it lasts because as we
:06:45. > :06:47.head towards lunchtime, the next band of very wet weather comes in,
:06:48. > :06:50.spreading from the West. The afternoon, there, sees heavy
:06:51. > :06:53.downpours across much of the region. As well as wet, it will be windy as
:06:54. > :06:56.well. Strong, gusty South to Southeasterly winds making it feel
:06:57. > :07:00.cool as temperatures only peak at around about eight Celsius, which is
:07:01. > :07:03.36 Fahrenheit. So that's how New Year's Day is looking. The rest of
:07:04. > :07:07.the week looks unsettled as well. `` 46 Fahrenheit. Another band of
:07:08. > :07:10.stormy weather on the way by the time we get to Friday. So keep in
:07:11. > :07:14.touch with your latest forecast on your BBC local radio station. We'll
:07:15. > :07:15.keep you updated on the travel news online as well.
:07:16. > :07:17.46 Fahrenheit. Another band of stormy weather on the way And you
:07:18. > :07:20.can always get the latest forecast on the BBC weather website.
:07:21. > :07:23.Take care if you're heading out tonight. That's it from Look North
:07:24. > :07:25.for this year. We're of course back tomorrow at 1pm. Until then, do
:07:26. > :07:44.enjoy your New Year's Eve. Bye bye. Good evening. It looks like mother
:07:45. > :07:48.nature may provide her own pyrotechnics in the run-up to bid
:07:49. > :07:52.night tonight. We have some heavy showers in western parts, starting
:07:53. > :07:58.to ease a bit across Scotland and Northern Ireland. But the showers
:07:59. > :08:02.further south are heavier, with some flashes of lightning as they move
:08:03. > :08:06.eastwards. They do get a bit more hit and miss as we head towards
:08:07. > :08:12.midnight, but a greater chance of getting wet in the south as we move
:08:13. > :08:16.into 2014. Cardiff and London could see heavy downpours. Further north,
:08:17. > :08:23.you could be greeting the New Year on a dry note. A touch of frost in
:08:24. > :08:27.northern and eastern areas going into New Year's Day. A few showers
:08:28. > :08:32.continue into the morning, but on New Year's Day, we have a few more
:08:33. > :08:39.heavy showers coming in. Rain pushing into the west, where the
:08:40. > :08:40.ground is saturated already. Persistent rain pushing its way
