:01:03. > :01:05.Good evening. Firefighters say public safety is
:01:06. > :01:08.being put at risk by cuts to the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.
:01:09. > :01:12.It's been announced today that more than 60 firefighter posts will be
:01:13. > :01:15.lost and the number of engines reduced. Some engines will be
:01:16. > :01:19.replaced by "Small Fires Units" but the Fire Brigades Union claim these
:01:20. > :01:24.are little more than a garden pressure washer on the back of a
:01:25. > :01:30.van. Tonight, the deputy chief fire officer has told BBC Look North the
:01:31. > :01:35.public are "absolutely not at risk". We'll hear from him. First, Tolu
:01:36. > :01:38.Adeoye reports. It took more than 20 firefighters to
:01:39. > :02:01.battle this substation fire near Cottingham in April last year. We've
:02:02. > :02:05.got sympathy with the authority. It is a different decision they have
:02:06. > :02:12.had to make. Central government have reduced spending and basically, it
:02:13. > :02:16.has ended up in this position where they have had to make some cuts. We
:02:17. > :02:23.are shocked as to how the act has fallen.
:02:24. > :02:25.Last year, Humberside Fire Authority outlined how it could save
:02:26. > :02:28.?2.5million from the budget. Today, after a public consultation, it
:02:29. > :02:30.revealed what would stay and what would go.
:02:31. > :02:33.There are currently 450 Humberside firefighters. That's being to
:02:34. > :02:37.reduced by more than 60, but none will be compulsory redundancies. The
:02:38. > :02:41.11 fire engines in Hull and Grimsby are being reduced by two to nine.
:02:42. > :02:53.And Grimsby's two fire stations will merge.
:02:54. > :02:57.Under these changes, both these fire stations will go and be replaced but
:02:58. > :03:02.smaller fire vehicles that can cope with minor incidents.
:03:03. > :03:04.These are the fire units that will replace the engines. There was
:03:05. > :03:13.concern today from villagers in Waltham about the changes. I am
:03:14. > :03:18.gutted, really. They do do a lot in the village. In the event of a house
:03:19. > :03:23.fire, you will have to wait longer for the service, I think it is
:03:24. > :03:27.wrong. It should stay the way it is. The Fire Service says it has no
:03:28. > :03:31.choice but to make the savings and that these were the best options.
:03:32. > :03:37.But that's not the end of the cuts. A further ?3 million will still need
:03:38. > :03:40.to be saved by April 2016. I spoke to Dean Sanders, the deputy
:03:41. > :03:46.chief fire officer at Humberside Fire and Rescue. He is due to step
:03:47. > :03:54.into the job as chief soon. I asked him if the cuts were really
:03:55. > :03:57.necessary. It is entirely down to the cuts in
:03:58. > :04:07.Aber funding, Peter. We were looking to save ?5.7 million by 2016 and
:04:08. > :04:12.2017. Much of that budget is Sally, that is where we act. Why cut at
:04:13. > :04:18.Hull and Grimsby were the biggest populations are and then keep
:04:19. > :04:24.another two options open instead? The authority has decided that the
:04:25. > :04:34.cuts that we can bear are better off in hull`mac and Grimsby. `` hull.
:04:35. > :04:42.Some people say these small five units are not sufficient. They will
:04:43. > :04:48.only attend house fires were necessary. We will still send two or
:04:49. > :04:51.three fire engines as normal. But every fire engine will have less
:04:52. > :04:57.people on them, five of four people. How can you justify that? We
:04:58. > :05:03.maintain that we need nine people at a house fire. But per fire engine
:05:04. > :05:10.you are making a reduction. Have you been overstaffed and asked
:05:11. > :05:15.them? This time we will take the pumps in the vehicles. As safety
:05:16. > :05:20.being put at risk because you have to save the money? Absolutely not.
:05:21. > :05:25.We are committed to saving committees and firefighters. It does
:05:26. > :05:30.not sound like it if you are reducing the number of people on
:05:31. > :05:35.board. In all there are more able on board our five Asians than in other
:05:36. > :05:38.similar sized cities. What reassuring seas can you give to
:05:39. > :05:44.people in Waltham or Cleethorpes who are losing their full`sized fire
:05:45. > :05:48.engines? The fire cover will come from Grimsby because that is the
:05:49. > :05:52.quickest response. We are giving them an extra facility in terms of
:05:53. > :05:57.medical and road accident response by tailoring these small fire units.
:05:58. > :06:03.But they are losing a fire engine. We are using an on call fire engine.
:06:04. > :06:06.That is correct, but we're changing it to a different type of fire
:06:07. > :06:10.vehicle that will be more suited to the rest. If you did not have to
:06:11. > :06:15.make the savings, would you be doing any of this? It is fair to say that
:06:16. > :06:18.we would like to keep the service as it is at the moment but the cuts
:06:19. > :06:23.from central government do not make this possible. Thank you, Dean
:06:24. > :06:27.Sanders. Are the Fiire Service making the
:06:28. > :06:36.cuts in the right way? Do you think small fires vehicles will fill gaps
:06:37. > :06:44.in the service? The number of firefighters per engine in Hull
