:00:00. > :00:00.died aged 88. That's all from the BBC News at Six so it's goodbye

:00:00. > :00:09.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. The headlines tonight.

:00:10. > :00:18.Claims that an influx of migrants from Romania and Bulgaria hasn't

:00:19. > :00:23.materialised. The message that we have got across is that the area is

:00:24. > :00:26.so full of migrant workers that there is no extra work here.

:00:27. > :00:30.The Government's asked to help three former soldiers from East Yorkshire

:00:31. > :00:32.who are being held in an Indian jail.

:00:33. > :00:39.The report that says you're more likely to be obese if you live near

:00:40. > :00:41.a takeaway. She's done it again ` Lincolnshire's

:00:42. > :00:50.Jade Etherington celebrates a record medal haul at the Winter

:00:51. > :01:00.Paralympics. And there are some sunshine to come this weekend.

:01:01. > :01:05.An investigation by BBC Look North has found that claims that a rush of

:01:06. > :01:09.Romanians and Bulgarians would come to work in Britain have not so far

:01:10. > :01:14.become reality in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Fears had been raised

:01:15. > :01:17.by some politicians and research groups that an influx of new

:01:18. > :01:21.migrants would put pressure on public services in towns including

:01:22. > :01:24.Boston. But some companies who employ workers from overseas say

:01:25. > :01:28.they're disappointed Romanians and Bulgarians are not coming at all.

:01:29. > :01:33.Here's our rural affairs correspondent, Linsey Smith.

:01:34. > :01:39.Spring has sprung and in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire there are

:01:40. > :01:43.more than the usual signs. Once we see that the flowers are going to be

:01:44. > :01:47.ready, then we start ringing the agencies that we use and will tell

:01:48. > :01:51.them how many pickers we think we want on a particular day. We're

:01:52. > :01:56.right in the peak of the season now and we are up to 150. We would

:01:57. > :02:00.really like about 200 at the moment. How many Romanians and Bulgarians

:02:01. > :02:04.have you had? I don't think we've got any. It's not just in the

:02:05. > :02:09.daffodil fields. We spoke to farmers, pack house owners and gang

:02:10. > :02:18.agencies. All of which were poised for an influx, they haven't seen a

:02:19. > :02:24.single Romanian or Bulgarian. On January the 1st On January the 1st

:02:25. > :02:27.all eyes were on airport arrival lounges. The Home Office say they'll

:02:28. > :02:30.be no official figures on the numbers of new migrants from Romania

:02:31. > :02:34.and Bulgaria until May. If they had headed here you may

:02:35. > :02:36.expect to find some here. Park Academy, Boston's school with a

:02:37. > :02:40.glowing reputation for welcoming children of different nationalities.

:02:41. > :02:53.67% of the pupils here don't speak English as their first language. We

:02:54. > :02:57.haven't seen any, we've had no interest from Romanian or Bulgarian

:02:58. > :03:00.families at all. It certainly would have been a struggle, the biggest

:03:01. > :03:12.challenge for us would've been places. Protesters in Boston are

:03:13. > :03:15.also worried about public services being overstretched. But even Boston

:03:16. > :03:17.Borough Council say they have taken a couple of tentative housing

:03:18. > :03:21.enquiries from Romanians and Bulgarians. But Liliana Demeter says

:03:22. > :03:28.the UK has missed out. A trained Romanian nurse, she moved here with

:03:29. > :03:32.her family a decade ago. In the nursing field, it is well known

:03:33. > :03:35.there are lots of jobs and they need nurses. From the local hospital they

:03:36. > :03:39.have gone to Portugal to recruit. Bad publicity around coming here had

:03:40. > :03:45.also a little bit of an impact and especially people with kids. Why

:03:46. > :03:58.they choose to come somewhere where they are not welcome. There are

:03:59. > :04:07.other countries, now it is three all over `` The UK's door is still open

:04:08. > :04:10.to Romanians and Bulgarians but in this home they feel there's little

:04:11. > :04:13.appetite to join them. The UK Independence Party was among

:04:14. > :04:16.those warning there would be tens of thousands of new migrants from

:04:17. > :04:21.Bulgaria and Romania. I spoke to Roger Helmer ` the UKIP MEP for the

:04:22. > :04:24.East Midlands. I asked him if he believes everyone wants to come and

:04:25. > :04:28.live in Britain. Of course not everyone wants to come

:04:29. > :04:32.to Britain, but very large numbers of people do want to come to Britain

:04:33. > :04:36.and have come to Britain, and will continue to come to Britain unless

:04:37. > :04:39.we get a grip on our borders. All the people we have spoken to,

:04:40. > :04:42.farmers and employers, none have seen an influx of Romanians and

:04:43. > :04:45.Bulgarian workers. It has not happened. If you go back to the

:04:46. > :04:48.beginning of 2013, you will find there are about 112,000 Romanians

:04:49. > :04:54.and Bulgarians in Britain. By the end of the year there were 142,000.

:04:55. > :04:58.Sorry, 141,000. You have got nearly 30,000 coming during the course of

:04:59. > :05:01.last year. We don't have good statistics for this year, and

:05:02. > :05:08.obviously it is still nine and a half months to go. Everyone was

:05:09. > :05:12.talking about the start of January. UKIP got it wrong. There was a lot

:05:13. > :05:16.of scaremongering, wasn't there? Absolutely not. As politicians we

:05:17. > :05:20.can tell you how many people gained the right to come to Britain at the

:05:21. > :05:24.beginning of this year, and that was close on 29 million in Bulgaria and

:05:25. > :05:31.Romania. What we can't tell you is exactly how many will come. There

:05:32. > :05:34.was all the scaremongering. There is a quote here from Godfrey Bloom in

:05:35. > :05:38.2012. Britain will be unable to stop the tidal flood of new immigrants.

:05:39. > :05:42.Where is this tidal flood? We have not even had a drip since January.

:05:43. > :05:45.We don't know what the statistics are, but we do know 30,000 came last

:05:46. > :05:48.year, and we know the National Statistics Office is estimating

:05:49. > :05:53.50,000 a year for subsequent years, so these are not trivial numbers.

:05:54. > :05:55.You must want to congratulate David Cameron, because another factor

:05:56. > :05:59.could be that the new migrants wouldn't be able to claim benefits

:06:00. > :06:04.for the first three months. That is a well done job, isn't it? He has

:06:05. > :06:07.made a few little gestures, but frankly in the overall scheme of

:06:08. > :06:11.things they make no real difference. The fact is, we in Britain can no

:06:12. > :06:15.longer control our borders in terms of people coming from the European

:06:16. > :06:21.Union, and we need to be able to do that. Are you sad we have missed out

:06:22. > :06:27.on a potential new labour force since the start of January, that

:06:28. > :06:31.firms desperately need those people? No, of course. We have to get a

:06:32. > :06:34.balance. UKIP isn't saying we don't want immigration. We are saying we

:06:35. > :06:39.want sensible numbers that we can cope with, and we want to be able to

:06:40. > :06:42.select people who are needed by British industry. It is about

:06:43. > :06:45.numbers and skills. Nothing to do with race or religion, or ethnicity

:06:46. > :06:49.or nationality. It is about numbers and skills. Other countries do this

:06:50. > :06:54.in a rational way. Canada and Australia. We can't because we are

:06:55. > :07:02.not very good with our borders and we are in the European Union.

:07:03. > :07:05.Did some politicians get it wrong? Has Britain put off new migrants who

:07:06. > :07:09.are now working in countries like Germany? Do you agree with Roger

:07:10. > :07:21.Helmer that Britain is not very good with its borders? Should reselect

:07:22. > :07:26.people `` should we select people? Email: looknorth@bbc.co.uk. Text:

:07:36. > :07:39.talking points on this week's Sunday Politics. The programme starts at

:07:40. > :07:45.11am on BBC One. Guests include the Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell and the

:07:46. > :07:50.Brigg and Goole MP, Andrew Percy. In a moment: Coming to Hull ` The

:07:51. > :07:58.city welcomes the man who could give millions to local arts

:07:59. > :08:01.organisations. David Cameron is being asked to help

:08:02. > :08:09.three former soldiers from East Yorkshire who are in jail in India.

:08:10. > :08:12.They're among six men arrested last October when Indian police detained

:08:13. > :08:27.the ship they were protecting against pirates. They were refused

:08:28. > :08:31.bail today. They have all served their country

:08:32. > :08:42.and now they need their country. Purslane array from Hull is a

:08:43. > :08:47.Buddhist soldier jailed in India `` British soldier. He had been working

:08:48. > :08:51.for an American security company when the Indian authorities detained

:08:52. > :08:55.that vessel five months ago. There she had had sailed from Yemen

:08:56. > :09:00.through waters with pirates. Its owners say the Indian Coast Guard

:09:01. > :09:04.allowed to enter the port to shelter from a cyclone. But India claims

:09:05. > :09:12.wasn't the right paperwork for the weapons on board. They had arms of

:09:13. > :09:19.course because they have to arm themselves. They were doing a job to

:09:20. > :09:24.protect themselves. Pressure is on the government to intervene. 100,000

:09:25. > :09:29.signatures have been collected on a petition urging the Prime Minister

:09:30. > :09:39.to stepping. A former paratrooper is held as well. His father says every

:09:40. > :09:46.day is tough. It can tie you up in knots. It has had an affect on the

:09:47. > :09:50.whole family. Everyone is concerned. We are spoken to the Foreign Office

:09:51. > :09:54.today who says this is a difficult and important case that the primers

:09:55. > :09:59.has raised with the authorities, but is unable to get the release of

:10:00. > :10:03.British nationals or interfere with another country's legal processes.

:10:04. > :10:08.It did say it will do all it can to help and stress the importance of a

:10:09. > :10:13.quick resolution. Carroll says that is not enough. David Cameron, if it

:10:14. > :10:18.was your son what would you do? If it was your family what would you

:10:19. > :10:34.do? You would want to get back home. You would do the best you could to

:10:35. > :10:38.get these guys are back home. We will continue to follow that story

:10:39. > :10:41.if there are any developments. Engineers have started dismantling

:10:42. > :10:44.an experimental tidal power generator in the Humber. The Neptune

:10:45. > :10:47.was built to provide power to The Deep, but was scrapped when the

:10:48. > :10:50.company behind it went into liquidation. People living on Hull's

:10:51. > :10:55.Victoria Dock had campaigned to have it removed, saying it had become an

:10:56. > :10:59.eyesore. Network Rail says a broken locking

:11:00. > :11:02.mechanism on the Goole swing bridge was behind delays last night. Five

:11:03. > :11:09.trains on the Hull to Doncaster line were held up. It took two hours for

:11:10. > :11:13.the problem to be fixed. A police constable from Hull has

:11:14. > :11:16.been to Buckingham Palace today to receive her MBE. PC Sharon Houfe was

:11:17. > :11:18.given the honour by Prince Charles for her work developing

:11:19. > :11:22.relationships with Hull's Muslim community and for tackling racial

:11:23. > :11:25.bullying in the city's schools. And Greg Knight, the MP for East

:11:26. > :11:31.Yorkshire, was knighted at the same ceremony, for his work in the

:11:32. > :11:36.Conservative's Whips' Office. If you live near a take`away you're

:11:37. > :11:40.more likely to be obese. That's according to new research in the

:11:41. > :11:43.British Medical Journal. They say there's been a large increase in

:11:44. > :11:49.take`away food businesses in recent year. For example we found out that

:11:50. > :11:58.in 2010 in North Lincolnshire there were 102 takeaways. There are now

:11:59. > :12:02.175. That's a 75% rise. And in that area almost a third of people are

:12:03. > :12:10.overweight. Sarah Corker reports from Scunthorpe.

:12:11. > :12:14.Fast food is cheap and convenient, but often high in fat and calories.

:12:15. > :12:21.But takeaway owners say they're just responding to demand. All take

:12:22. > :12:26.arrays have high calories, but you can get it from the supermarket as

:12:27. > :12:33.well. It is not just us and you're giving people what they want. Almost

:12:34. > :12:38.30% of adults here are OBEs, above the national average. Here in

:12:39. > :12:44.Scunthorpe, I have counted 14 take arrays in less than half a mile foot

:12:45. > :12:48.of the report today says the closer either to a fast`food joint the more

:12:49. > :12:56.likely you are to be overweight. How often do you eat takeaway is? Five

:12:57. > :13:12.days a week. Ie chicken and kebabs. It keeps people lazy. June and Mayo.

:13:13. > :13:16.It is healthy `` We need between between two and 2500 calories a day.

:13:17. > :13:20.Fish and chips with mushy peas is 604 calories A meat feast pizza

:13:21. > :13:23.comes in at 900 calories And for a whopping 1,436 calories, you can get

:13:24. > :13:31.a chinese sweet and sour chicken with egg friend rice and spring

:13:32. > :13:37.rolls. `` fried. More takeaways are appearing on our high streets than

:13:38. > :13:41.ever before. Just because there is a fast`food joint there it does not

:13:42. > :13:47.mean you have to eat it. We have to make sure people exercise. Will the

:13:48. > :13:53.council listen to this advice and limit the number of takeaways? We

:13:54. > :13:57.believe interesting people. And health professionals want councils

:13:58. > :14:02.to take more responsbility. If customers want to eat healthy baking

:14:03. > :14:04.comb into an establishment and that choice is there for them. In Hull,

:14:05. > :14:07.the council's encouring businesses to offer healthy options, like

:14:08. > :14:11.grilling food rather frying it. So the message is some fast foods are

:14:12. > :14:14.kinder to your wastelines than others. It's your choice.

:14:15. > :14:28.Are there too many takeaways? Should councils stop new ones opening? Are

:14:29. > :14:38.they making people obese? There is the contact details below.

:14:39. > :14:44.Still ahead tonight: The Lincolnshire skier who's become

:14:45. > :14:54.Britain's most successful woman at the Winter Paralympics. It was the

:14:55. > :15:13.best race we have done together, so we are both happy. Let's take a look

:15:14. > :15:29.at night's picture. This is a lovely picture. It is these are good at the

:15:30. > :15:46.weekend send it in. `` if you see anything good. You said I was

:15:47. > :15:55.bossy. Let's have a look at the weather. There'll be some sunshine

:15:56. > :16:00.but cloud tomorrow morning. It will brighten up and LB sunshine by

:16:01. > :16:05.tomorrow afternoon. Sunday is pleasant. It is because there is

:16:06. > :16:10.pressure from the South and settled weather through the rest of the

:16:11. > :16:13.week. We will start the season changes by Wednesday. More cloud

:16:14. > :16:16.develops as we move through the course of the afternoon. It will

:16:17. > :16:21.continue to spread southwards overnight. A largely cloudy night

:16:22. > :16:26.developing but mostly dry one and underneath that cloud temperatures

:16:27. > :16:30.will drop too low. Not as cool as last night. Seven or eight degrees.

:16:31. > :16:45.We will have the problems of mist and fog. Your next high water will

:16:46. > :16:50.be at 5am tomorrow morning. A loss of cloud around. It may well linger

:16:51. > :16:58.until late morning, midday, but I'm hopeful it will brighten up through

:16:59. > :17:03.tomorrow. We should see some sunny spells breaking through, but it

:17:04. > :17:08.might be that temperatures don't go too high. It also the average of 12

:17:09. > :17:11.or 13 degrees. It with outbreaks of quickly enough I wouldn't be

:17:12. > :17:20.surprised to see temperatures getting up to 14 or 15 degrees. On

:17:21. > :17:23.Sunday, there will be some low cloud around, but that should burn off and

:17:24. > :17:28.we will have some spells of sunshine. Another dry day to come

:17:29. > :17:38.and cool on Tuesday. We will start to see changes on Monday. There will

:17:39. > :17:48.be some rain around. Thank you for your grandmother who dogged me in.

:17:49. > :17:52.The head of the organisation that funds arts in England says he can

:17:53. > :17:55.help Hull unlock its potential before it becomes UK City of Culture

:17:56. > :17:58.in 2017. Alan Davey has already approved millions of pounds for the

:17:59. > :18:04.city but says there are never guarantees about more funding.

:18:05. > :18:09.Caroline Bilton met him as he toured the city today.

:18:10. > :18:13.He came to see the cultural highlights of Hull ` This is a man

:18:14. > :18:16.who holds the key to unlock lots of money ` so those who are behind

:18:17. > :18:26.Hull's City of Culture celebrations were keen to bend his ear. The arts

:18:27. > :18:29.Council has committed ?3 million but we see the opportunity to make a

:18:30. > :18:32.difference here. His visit started off here at Hull Truck Theatre one

:18:33. > :18:37.the main recipients of arts council funding in the city at the moment.

:18:38. > :18:41.He then visited smaller businesses like this art gallery, who are

:18:42. > :18:54.hoping the city of Gold estate will open new doors. `` city of culture

:18:55. > :19:00.status. We can't extend our state is it we don't get the money. From

:19:01. > :19:05.grassroots to big events, the city of culture celebrations come with a

:19:06. > :19:11.80 million pounds price tag. The council is facing cuts, so what can

:19:12. > :19:16.they promised? It is always competitive. What is happening in

:19:17. > :19:21.Hull is special. It is special but Hull. It is special for art and

:19:22. > :19:31.culture, so we have to get behind it and we are. We will find a way.

:19:32. > :19:38.There are no guarantees? I can never give guarantees. Other visits in the

:19:39. > :19:42.pipeline will happen. Conversations happen all over the UK for the city

:19:43. > :19:51.of culture. I've met with some of the lottery distributors, the

:19:52. > :19:56.British film Institute. They want to understand what we are achieving

:19:57. > :20:00.here. He says the main thing he will take away from his visit is the

:20:01. > :20:04.possibility of what can be achieved here. Of course, arts Council

:20:05. > :20:08.funding is crucial in achieving that full potential, but he tells me

:20:09. > :20:15.this, it'll be the first of many visits to the city.

:20:16. > :20:18.The winners at last night's Hull and East Yorkshire tourism awards say

:20:19. > :20:21.they're confident that they can do their bit to attract more visitors

:20:22. > :20:24.to the area. At last night's ceremony in Bridlington there was a

:20:25. > :20:28.determination from winners like RSPB Bempton and the KC Stadium to take

:20:29. > :20:37.full advantage of Hull's year as UK City of Culture 2017.

:20:38. > :20:40.It's a great time Yorkshire in general. We have the Grand Depart

:20:41. > :20:43.this year, and we will have the new visitor centre and the all new

:20:44. > :20:49.singing and dancing Bempton Cliffs next year. That'll go on then into

:20:50. > :20:53.2017, and the Hull City of Culture. It is a chance for local businesses

:20:54. > :20:58.to say we're going to have have the most fantastic year, but in the run

:20:59. > :20:59.up to 2017 look at what else we can achieve.

:21:00. > :21:04.Congratulations to the other winners. Village Farm Bed

:21:05. > :21:10.Breakfast in Skipsea. Millers Tea Room at Raywell. Drewton's Farm Shop

:21:11. > :21:14.at South Cave. Mr Moo's Ice Cream. High Barn Cottages in Bempton The

:21:15. > :21:19.Triton Inn at Brantingham. Tickton Grange Hotel near Beverley. The Star

:21:20. > :21:23.restaurant at Sancton. The UK City of Culture Winning Team. And Joint

:21:24. > :21:30.Winners in the tourism event category: Beverley Folk Festival

:21:31. > :21:36.the Freedom Festival in Hull. Well done to everybody.

:21:37. > :21:39.Hull City boss Steve Bruce says its not good patting themselves on the

:21:40. > :21:44.back because they're not safe from relegation yet. The Tigers welcome

:21:45. > :21:48.to the KC Stadium one of the favourites for the title, Manchester

:21:49. > :21:56.City who beat them in the reverse fixture 2`0 earlier in the season.

:21:57. > :22:00.We couldn't have played any better against them, and we still weren't

:22:01. > :22:05.good enough. I accept that and say OK, we were beaten fairly and that

:22:06. > :22:13.is what we have to do tomorrow. We have to make sure we play well.

:22:14. > :22:17.And the Tigers will have 32,000 tickets for their semifinal with

:22:18. > :22:20.Sheffield United at Wembley. Our sports reporter Simon Clark has some

:22:21. > :22:27.more details on the distribution. Simon what are the plans by the
