:00:00. > :00:10.there's a first look at the papers over on the BBC News Channel, but

:00:11. > :00:15.are calls for an inquiry as 90 pupils face having their edtcation

:00:16. > :00:18.disrupted following the announcement that a secondary school in Hull is

:00:19. > :00:21.closing. Hull Studio School, which opened less than two years `go, was

:00:22. > :00:25.designed to focus on business and enterprise. But there aren't enough

:00:26. > :00:28.students to make it viable. Caroline Bilton reports.

:00:29. > :00:35.For some students this opportunity is really exciting. When it opened

:00:36. > :00:40.it was a pioneer, just one of seven colleges in the UK to offer a new

:00:41. > :00:43.type of education. But in ldss than two years it's closing, leaving the

:00:44. > :00:49.future of some of its 90 sttdents hanging in the balance.

:00:50. > :00:52.I had to check the date on the calendar because I honestly thought

:00:53. > :00:55.it was an April Fool's joke. This parent wanted to remain

:00:56. > :00:58.anonymous to protect her chhld's future education.

:00:59. > :01:02.We'd had no warning at all from the school or any of the authorhties.

:01:03. > :01:06.Nothing. We were totally in the dark. We don't know what's going on.

:01:07. > :01:17.A studio school day won't bd a nine our child is going to be.

:01:18. > :01:20.A studio school day won't bd a nine to three experience. It's sponsored

:01:21. > :01:24.by Hull College but what is a studio school? It was a new concept in

:01:25. > :01:27.education that started back in 010. They're a type of academy ddsigned

:01:28. > :01:31.for pupils aged between 14 `nd 9. And they offer practical skhlls in

:01:32. > :01:36.the workplace as well as tr`ditional academic and vocational studies

:01:37. > :01:39.In a statement the trust th`t runs the School says that the closure is

:01:40. > :01:43.down to increased competition across the city. That in turn has leant

:01:44. > :01:48.they have struggled to recrtit the number of pupils necessary to secure

:01:49. > :01:51.its viability. They say thex'll work with pupils to help them find an

:01:52. > :01:55.appropriate destination to continue their learning.

:01:56. > :02:00.The Department for Education gave ?170,000 to the Trust when the

:02:01. > :02:05.school was set up. Some belheve an inquiry should take place. Hn my

:02:06. > :02:11.knowledge this is completelx unprecedented. It's extraordinary,

:02:12. > :02:15.in fact. How could you posshbly open a school, spend a lot of money on it

:02:16. > :02:18.and have it closed within 18 months. You can hardly make it up, ht is

:02:19. > :02:22.quite extraordinary. I think it has national implications. We do need to

:02:23. > :02:25.get to the bottom of this. It aimed to teach them about the

:02:26. > :02:28.world of work. For students here they're getting a taste of the

:02:29. > :02:32.reality a little earlier th`n they would have liked.

:02:33. > :02:35.No`one from Hull Studio School, its sponsors or the Department of

:02:36. > :02:39.Education was available for comment. Earlier I spoke to Adrian Joyce from

:02:40. > :02:42.the teaching union the NASUWT and asked him whether there really was a

:02:43. > :02:47.lack demand for such a vocational school.

:02:48. > :02:50.This particular case, it sedms there is a lack of demand and

:02:51. > :02:53.unfortunately there should be lots of pupils, especially with the

:02:54. > :02:57.Siemens and the wind power coming to Hull, there should be lots of pupils

:02:58. > :03:01.wanting a vocational career, a vocational pathway but for some

:03:02. > :03:04.reason they're just not attdnding. Before the studio school opdned the

:03:05. > :03:08.Department of Education said that following a consultation thdre was a

:03:09. > :03:13.huge appetite for it. What's gone wrong in the past 18 months? There

:03:14. > :03:16.is a huge demand for educathon that is vocational because many students

:03:17. > :03:19.are fed up with education that is weighing their intellect, wdighing

:03:20. > :03:23.their ability and effort and they need a vocational course. Wd would

:03:24. > :03:27.have thought this would havd been a successful route for them. Xet it

:03:28. > :03:30.hasn't been successful, has it? No, nobody really knows why and it's

:03:31. > :03:34.such a shame when you have students in Hull who could be doing good

:03:35. > :03:36.things. It does seem perhaps a complete waste of ?170,000 that the

:03:37. > :03:40.Department of Education contributed to the cost of this school. That

:03:41. > :03:44.could be money spent elsewhdre. Exactly, that's one of the concerns

:03:45. > :03:48.that unions have and the NASUWT are concerned about free schools and

:03:49. > :03:50.studio schools where money hs taken away from the community schools and

:03:51. > :03:55.students are taken away out of community schools and there isn t

:03:56. > :03:59.the accountability. It's cldar this was a new way of educating

:04:00. > :04:03.youngsters with a focus on business and enterprise. Do you think more

:04:04. > :04:06.could have been done to support the school? It's an interesting

:04:07. > :04:12.question. The studio school approach has allegedly been tried in Germany

:04:13. > :04:15.and has been successful. We like to look at other countries and see what

:04:16. > :04:19.ideas they have but for somd reason here in Hull it has not been

:04:20. > :04:22.successful, which is a shamd, because there are people losing jobs

:04:23. > :04:25.and there are students whosd dreams and hopes are going to be thwarted.

:04:26. > :04:28.Adrian Joyce from the teachhng Union the NASUWT speaking to me e`rlier

:04:29. > :04:31.Both Humberside and Lincolnshire Police need to make improvelents to

:04:32. > :04:35.the way they handle domestic abuse. That's according to a new rdport

:04:36. > :04:41.which says Humberside Policd has a fragmented and inconsistent approach

:04:42. > :04:42.to dealing with cases. Lincolnshire's force was described

:04:43. > :04:48.as being generally effectivd, but improvements are still needdd to

:04:49. > :04:51.keep victims safe. After just than six months, flights

:04:52. > :04:55.from Humberside Airport to Copenhagen are being scrappdd. When

:04:56. > :04:58.it was launched, those involved believed one of the key are`s of

:04:59. > :05:02.trade would be the renewablds sector. But Scandinavian Airlines

:05:03. > :05:08.has blamed disappointing passenger numbers, as Emma Massey reports

:05:09. > :05:11.Business as usual for KLM and Eastern Airways but the third major

:05:12. > :05:14.airline to operate out of Htmberside Airport, Scandinavian Airlines, has

:05:15. > :05:19.said today it's cancelling hts service. We are very disappointed

:05:20. > :05:22.that Scandinavian Airlines have decided to cancel the route but

:05:23. > :05:26.there are other opportunitids and we are really, really clear th`t with

:05:27. > :05:29.KLM and with Eastern and other airlines that are looking to operate

:05:30. > :05:33.from the region, now is a rdally exciting time for our airport and

:05:34. > :05:37.for the region itself. When operations began in October last

:05:38. > :05:40.year the deal was seen as a vote of confidence in the local economy

:05:41. > :05:43.Denmark has pioneered the use of renewable energy which is expanding

:05:44. > :05:48.across the Humber region with business links ever more important.

:05:49. > :05:51.Scandinavian Airlines has s`id that passenger demand for the rotte was

:05:52. > :05:58.not as high as anticipated which made it unsustainable to continue

:05:59. > :06:03.flying from Humberside Airport. The route began at the end of October

:06:04. > :06:07.last year. It's a five times a week service using a 50`seat aircraft.

:06:08. > :06:11.Since it began there has bedn 1 cancellations due to weather and

:06:12. > :06:14.technical issues. It will h`ve a major knock`on effect. A lot of

:06:15. > :06:18.people rely on airlines these days, to and from work, to and from

:06:19. > :06:21.holidays, you know. Personally, I'd hope this airport would grow as

:06:22. > :06:26.opposed to potential cutbacks, so it's extremely disappointing.

:06:27. > :06:28.With other airline operators using this airport successfully it's hoped

:06:29. > :06:39.that Scandinavian Airlines will return at some point in the future.

:06:40. > :06:44.It has been a bit wet today. Let's get a look at the weather now,

:06:45. > :06:47.here's Paull Hudson with thd forecast. Hello good evening, well a

:06:48. > :06:51.very unsettled night to comd with showery outbreaks of locallx very

:06:52. > :06:55.heavy rain moving up from the south east, even the odd clap of thunder

:06:56. > :06:58.but a bit of a clearance coling into most areas by dawn tomorrow. Lowest

:06:59. > :07:02.temperatures down to five or six degrees. For Friday a mostlx cloudy

:07:03. > :07:05.day and through the morning there is a risk of further patchy outbreaks

:07:06. > :07:08.of rain in places but the afternoon should be dry just about evdrywhere

:07:09. > :07:14.and possibly a bit brighter, always a lot of cloud. A keen eastdrly

:07:15. > :07:19.wind, top temperatures eight or nine in the north, perhaps doubld figures

:07:20. > :07:23.further south. That's the forecast. That's all from the late te`m. Look

:07:24. > :07:26.North is back tomorrow mornhng at 6.25, I hope you can join us then.

:07:27. > :07:43.Bye for now. Hello, as winter becomes spring the

:07:44. > :07:46.atmosphere contains more energy The shower clouds grow taller. If

:07:47. > :07:52.conditions are right, you get thunder storms. There have been some

:07:53. > :07:58.today. Bob took this picture near London this afternoon. The spring

:07:59. > :08:02.flowers will appreciate the re turn return of warmth. Until then big

:08:03. > :08:06.showers to come, pushing in across south-west England - some hail and

:08:07. > :08:11.thunder. Sleet and snow on to the top of the moors.

:08:12. > :08:15.From Norfolk to coastal England into Northern Ireland. Elsewhere, one or

:08:16. > :08:19.two showers around. Where you are clear for a time, you will see a

:08:20. > :08:24.touch of frost here and there. Patchy mist and fog all in the mix

:08:25. > :08:28.as Friday begins. From the word go, we are dodging downpours in

:08:29. > :08:34.south-west England, increasingly so into Wales as well. Hail and thunder

:08:35. > :08:41.with these. The day is starting starting largely dry weather. Still

:08:42. > :08:42.this area of cloud and outbreaks of rain. Some heavy across
