:00:00. > :00:00.so it's Good evening and welcome to

:00:00. > :00:00.BBC Look North. A council faces thousands of pounds

:00:00. > :00:11.in compensation claims from people Tough decisions lie ahead

:00:12. > :00:24.about the future of the crumbling They've set up camp in

:00:25. > :00:29.East Yorkshire, but just who are Football's most famous trophy comes

:00:30. > :00:35.to Hull as fans prepare for the Thousands of pounds in compensation

:00:36. > :00:58.claims could be made against a local council by people who've

:00:59. > :01:03.fallen on controversial new paving. It's called a shared area,

:01:04. > :01:07.where people on foot, on bike and in vehicles are supposed

:01:08. > :01:12.to move in harmony, but there's been We highlighted concerns

:01:13. > :01:28.about changes to this main town centre route in Grimsby back

:01:29. > :01:30.in January. Now there there are calls

:01:31. > :01:33.for a review into the works. Emma, can you show us what

:01:34. > :01:49.people say the problem is? Now all sins, no signs, everybody

:01:50. > :01:56.has to mingle and get all of that. It has a part paving. It is this

:01:57. > :02:11.small part, which is causing all of the problems. I had a big lump on my

:02:12. > :02:14.head. I broke my nose. The injury suffered by this woman when she

:02:15. > :02:28.slipped on eve optionally invisible kilt. It is an accident waiting to

:02:29. > :02:33.happen. They should open their eyes. She was here in Grimsby when the

:02:34. > :02:42.accident happened. It is designed so that vehicles, and pedestrians can

:02:43. > :02:53.navigate the earlier. You are taking your life in your hands. The car

:02:54. > :02:56.drivers do not know real bear. This man is registered as quaint and has

:02:57. > :03:14.had difficulties negotiating the earlier. I have to look up words. It

:03:15. > :03:24.makes my eyes all funny. Her husband broke his wrist. I am in agony. If I

:03:25. > :03:32.try to move it the pain is ridiculous. This weekend work began

:03:33. > :03:42.to replace some of the paving but the council has defended the plan.

:03:43. > :03:49.?7 million has been spent and that has been some teething trouble with

:03:50. > :03:54.this. E`petition has now been started to the council to the

:03:55. > :04:00.design. We have spoken to some solace of those who said it is very

:04:01. > :04:08.difficult to claim against the council. They have sent that the

:04:09. > :04:11.average claim if successful would be between two and ?5,000.

:04:12. > :04:14.Ben Hamilton`Baillie is a street designer who's created shared spaces

:04:15. > :04:19.He says people will get used to them and grown to like them.

:04:20. > :04:22.I asked him why he thinks they are a good idea.

:04:23. > :04:25.Certainly in most towns or cities where we need to accomodate all

:04:26. > :04:30.sorts of activites, as well as the movement of traffic, share space

:04:31. > :04:36.But if people are falling over and injuring themselves it doesn't

:04:37. > :04:42.Well, people fall over and injure themselves every day in every day.

:04:43. > :04:50.If that's to do with the streets being shared is another question.

:04:51. > :04:53.But we've had pavements and roads all of my life,

:04:54. > :04:58.Why do we have to be trendy and get rid of them?

:04:59. > :05:01.In any Accident and Emergency unit, any day of the week,

:05:02. > :05:03.you'll find several people, particularly elderly, who have

:05:04. > :05:10.But they're saying they're dazzled by the pattern

:05:11. > :05:17.Aren't we being a bit dismissive of people who've got problems?

:05:18. > :05:20.Clearly, the design of the kerb is very important.

:05:21. > :05:24.We put a lot of effort into that, to make sure they're as visible

:05:25. > :05:28.as possible without being a barrier between pedestrian

:05:29. > :05:35.I don't know the particular scheme in Grimsby, I'm afraid.

:05:36. > :05:40.Perhaps it's not been designed as well as it might, I can't say.

:05:41. > :05:44.One of the people injured said she would like ?10,000 in compensation.

:05:45. > :05:49.Do you think people should be compensated?

:05:50. > :05:52.It's a dangerous road when you assume that every time

:05:53. > :05:55.an accident happens, or a slip occurs, it's somebody else's fault.

:05:56. > :06:03.But trips and falls happen every day of the

:06:04. > :06:11.I think it's a mistake to always assume it's somebody else's fault.

:06:12. > :06:58.The we would like your thoughts on this story. With us now.

:06:59. > :07:01.The political parties hoping to be dealt a winning hand

:07:02. > :07:10.Tough decisions must be made about the future of Europe's

:07:11. > :07:15.And now East Riding Council is about to start looking at whether

:07:16. > :07:19.it should save land near Withernsea and Hornsea which currently doesn't

:07:20. > :07:24.At stake are peoples homes, roads, farmland and caravan parks.

:07:25. > :07:28.Our correspondent Paul Murphy has the story.

:07:29. > :07:31.Defending communities from the sea is a never ending challenge on

:07:32. > :07:39.But some here have no defences at all ` including caravan parks

:07:40. > :07:59.If this Econ is round the back then it is sensitive. I am not very

:08:00. > :08:12.happy. If you are insecure. The council constantly monitors

:08:13. > :08:14.erosion on this coast. But now it wants to look at two

:08:15. > :08:18.specific communities at higher risk. The areas being studied are

:08:19. > :08:20.from south of Hornsea down to Mappleton, where the council

:08:21. > :08:24.is concerned about caravan parks And south of Withernsea where there

:08:25. > :08:28.is an undefended housing estate, a caravan site and Yorkshire

:08:29. > :08:31.Water's water treatment works. At this cliff top caravan park in

:08:32. > :08:50.Hornsea they lose large chunks of We are very concerned. We are unable

:08:51. > :09:03.to replace the places that we lose. It brings six ?7,000 a year into the

:09:04. > :09:09.economy. The council is making one thing clear, protecting everything

:09:10. > :09:16.is not an option. It is not environmentally acceptable. To be

:09:17. > :09:21.realistic it is not going to happen. You have some tough choices? Very

:09:22. > :09:24.tough. The sea is always the winner

:09:25. > :09:26.in this contest. But the hope is that

:09:27. > :09:29.at least some of the vulnerable communities along this shoreline

:09:30. > :09:38.coast can get better protection. An Iranian family who were found

:09:39. > :09:41.in the back of a refrigerated lorry in Spalding

:09:42. > :09:44.have been discharged from hospital. The couple and their two young

:09:45. > :09:46.children were discovered last Thursday after people heard

:09:47. > :09:49.them banging while the lorry was Hull may be gripped by FA Cup fever,

:09:50. > :10:04.but there's another contest being played out on the streets

:10:05. > :10:06.of the city. Local elections take place a week

:10:07. > :10:09.on Thursday and Hull's politicians are campaigning for votes ahead

:10:10. > :10:11.of polling day. Here's our

:10:12. > :10:13.Political Editor Tim Iredale. In Hull it's fair to say that

:10:14. > :10:16.politics isn't the only game But for the city's politicians,

:10:17. > :10:22.the stakes are always high Labour council leader Steve Brady

:10:23. > :10:46.is hoping a recent raft of good We have had a phenomenal year. We

:10:47. > :10:49.are the city of culture. We have got ?5 million of much`needed council

:10:50. > :10:56.money and we have put that into the docks. They were impressed.

:10:57. > :10:59.In recent years, the chips have been down for

:11:00. > :11:02.the Liberal Democrats after a series of poundings at the ballot box.

:11:03. > :11:13.By backing the weather will Democrats people will be voting for

:11:14. > :11:14.people who want to serve them. We will provide the valuable

:11:15. > :12:02.opposition. glamorous, but that is what people

:12:03. > :12:05.want. This is a vote for change. Fresh ideas. Working hard. We are

:12:06. > :12:10.asking what opinions are. Could this be the year more

:12:11. > :12:18.voters play the Green card? Here are some of your photos. Thank

:12:19. > :13:30.realising it. Here are some of your photos. Thank

:13:31. > :13:44.you. After last night, there was a revelation you were seen on your

:13:45. > :13:51.bike. But apparently it was deleted. Here is the weather headline. It is

:13:52. > :14:01.not a bad run. Mostly dry with some sunshine. High pressure coming in.

:14:02. > :14:13.It is going to be a short spell of somebody with. On Sunday it could

:14:14. > :14:17.breach down. That is going to be some nice weather in the next few

:14:18. > :14:30.days. Some thunderstorms in the short term. Risk of localised

:14:31. > :14:37.flooding. The skies were clear from the North with temperatures coming

:14:38. > :14:47.in at six or seven Celsius. The high water time is just after succeeding.

:14:48. > :14:57.It should be a lovely start to the day. The temperatures will rise.

:14:58. > :15:07.That is the risk of an isolated showers. Most of us will be fine and

:15:08. > :15:16.bright. For hospitals of sunshine. Afternoon temperatures of 12

:15:17. > :15:27.degrees. 16 in the West. The Steelers drive. Temperatures are

:15:28. > :15:41.peaking on Friday and Saturday. It is time to dust down the barbecue.

:15:42. > :15:46.They are asking where you got it from. A charity shop. Buy one get

:15:47. > :15:50.one free. See you later. David Cameron said everyone flooded

:15:51. > :15:53.during the winter can have ?5,000. It's for the clean`up

:15:54. > :15:56.and flood proofing for the future. My message to

:15:57. > :15:58.the country today is this: Money is no object

:15:59. > :16:01.in this relief effort. Whatever money is needed

:16:02. > :16:06.for it will be spent. But the BBC has found out that

:16:07. > :16:11.of 600 people flooded in Boston in Lincolnshire only 23 have

:16:12. > :16:14.applied for the cash. Jake Zuckerman reports

:16:15. > :16:34.from the town. When flooding her Boston last year,

:16:35. > :16:40.the government promised to help. Properties could apply for up to

:16:41. > :16:43.?5,000. But so far only 23 households have applied for the

:16:44. > :16:52.money. Councils are worried that hundreds must risk missing out. I

:16:53. > :17:10.want people to come forward. It is not too late. You are eligible. We

:17:11. > :17:17.would want you to come forward. This woman is still feeling the effects.

:17:18. > :17:28.We have water coming through. The money would be so useful. The

:17:29. > :17:36.Citizens Advice Bureau is offering to help people fell in the forms. I

:17:37. > :17:40.am concerned that people are not claiming what is due to them. It is

:17:41. > :17:50.wrote about ?4 million from the government. I want people to get all

:17:51. > :17:53.of that. Many of these houses were affected. The money from the

:17:54. > :18:01.government would help for improvements like Windows and raised

:18:02. > :18:03.political sockets. The challenge for the council is to make sure that all

:18:04. > :18:10.those eligible claim the money. An incredible response to our story

:18:11. > :18:13.that anti`fracking protestors have set up two camps in East Yorkshire,

:18:14. > :18:16.where a Canadian company has been Rathlin Energy denies fracking

:18:17. > :19:41.for gas is on the cards. those long as it takes. But who are

:19:42. > :19:51.these group of protesters? I am in the middle of studying for an

:19:52. > :19:59.environmental master 's degree. I have seen what this gas industry

:20:00. > :20:08.does, the devastation. With two children, this man is convinced that

:20:09. > :20:13.he owes it to them. I do not want them asking me what I did about it.

:20:14. > :20:19.I don't want to have that on my conscience. This woman has a

:20:20. > :20:28.background in conservation and has protested at other sites. If Frost

:20:29. > :20:36.found out about this through a friend. They told me what was

:20:37. > :20:45.happening. I started doing some research. I feel that I did not have

:20:46. > :20:48.a choice. I feel responsible. Some people did not want to be on camera

:20:49. > :20:57.but told me of the jobs they have given opt to please you. The speed

:20:58. > :20:57.of the Internet now beams that protesters can organise themselves

:20:58. > :21:04.for effectively than ever. BBC Radio Lincolnshire has won

:21:05. > :21:06.a national radio award. Lipdub Lincoln ` which shows around

:21:07. > :21:10.500 people miming to songs from Take That ` took the gold at last night's

:21:11. > :21:24.Radio Academy awards ceremony. The manager

:21:25. > :21:26.of Scunthorpe United has received Russ Wilcox took his team on a

:21:27. > :21:34.record undefeated run after taking over late last year, securing their

:21:35. > :21:38.promotion to league one next season. He's been named manager

:21:39. > :21:42.of the year in League Two ` by The most famous trophy in English

:21:43. > :21:49.football was in Hull today. The FA Cup ` with two minders `

:21:50. > :21:53.was taken on a tour ahead of this weekend's final between

:21:54. > :21:58.Hull City and Arsenal. And there was a long queue at the

:21:59. > :22:08.KC Stadium this afternoon for a chance to see just what's up

:22:09. > :22:11.for grabs this weekend. It was a whirwind tour for the cup,

:22:12. > :22:14.starting off at And one of those legends has

:22:15. > :22:25.high hopes for the match. There was against Sheffield United

:22:26. > :22:30.because they were favourites. But Arsenal haven't won a trophy

:22:31. > :22:35.in nine`and`a`half years Hull City has known great times

:22:36. > :22:40.at Wembley, back in the 2008 playoff, and just a few

:22:41. > :22:46.weeks ago at the FA cup semi`final. Standing in their way this time

:22:47. > :22:50.will be Arsenal, who had their own This afternoon it was

:22:51. > :23:05.off to Sidmouth Primary school, where there was much excitement

:23:06. > :23:08.and no doubt about the result. The children have been told they

:23:09. > :23:18.must not touch the FA Cup, but we'll find out in four days if Hull City

:23:19. > :23:39.will get their hands on it! I will be outside Wembley Stadium on

:23:40. > :23:53.Friday night. Come and find us if you're going to the game.

:23:54. > :23:56.Let's get a recap of the national and regional headlines.

:23:57. > :24:01.A man has been arrested in connection with the death of Claudia

:24:02. > :24:02.wants. North East Lincolnshire Council

:24:03. > :24:05.faces thousands of pounds in compensation claims from people

:24:06. > :24:16.who've fallen on new paving. The weather, staying dry but

:24:17. > :24:26.temperatures getting up to 17 Celsius.

:24:27. > :24:35.We were talking about shield early as earlier. A big response. Then

:24:36. > :24:38.says he has seen if you people walk off the page down onto the road

:24:39. > :24:46.without looking because they are not the same. No markings. It is an

:24:47. > :24:52.accident waiting to happen. Mark says it is insane. It should be

:24:53. > :24:56.clearly defined. If you are mixing them you will get accidents. Dan

:24:57. > :25:03.says that people should look really are going instead of thinking about

:25:04. > :25:10.compensation. Mark says I was in them speak this weekend and I think

:25:11. > :25:14.it looks amazing. Adam says I am a delivery driver and I think it looks

:25:15. > :25:22.better than before. I stop to let people course. People will always

:25:23. > :25:51.complain when the busy change. Join me tomorrow. Thank you. Good night.

:25:52. > :25:57.Can I make something clear to you? UKIP is not against immigration.
