:00:09. > :00:12.A Hull MP says new rules ailed at reducing pollution in the shipping

:00:18. > :00:21.Ferry companies have been told to use more expensive fuel which has

:00:22. > :00:24.less sulphur in it, but thex're worried about the extra cost.

:00:25. > :00:29.Hull East MP Karl Turner agrees and wants the government to act

:00:30. > :00:33.Our political editor Tim Irddale reports.

:00:34. > :00:36.Like all forms of transport, the shipping industry is under

:00:37. > :00:41.pressure to become cleaner, greener and more efficient.

:00:42. > :00:45.But according to one Hull MP, ferry operators, such as P, will soon be

:00:46. > :00:50.hit by expensive regulations which will force them to change the fuel

:00:51. > :00:56.They're going to have to pass it on somehow.

:00:57. > :00:58.They're not going to be able to swallow that cost.

:00:59. > :01:01.They're either going to havd to make a decision and cancel

:01:02. > :01:08.International rules mean th`t the sulphur content of fuel

:01:09. > :01:13.The shipping industry claims that switching to lighter, marind diesel

:01:14. > :01:23.And they are warning of up to 2000 job losses across the TK.

:01:24. > :01:25.I would like the government to show a little

:01:26. > :01:29.bit of leadership here now, and to lobby the EU to allow a transition

:01:30. > :01:31.period, a route to compliance, as was envisaged by the

:01:32. > :01:37.The industry even claims motorists could pay up to 3p a litre lore

:01:38. > :01:41.for diesel because of the extra pressure put on refineries.

:01:42. > :01:46.Something that shocked drivdrs in Hull today.

:01:47. > :01:49.Drivers won't pay 3p a litre more for any reason,

:01:50. > :01:53.Yes, I am worried about that, and it will make a big dent

:01:54. > :01:55.in our family income because we travel across thd

:01:56. > :02:00.The government has hit back at claims that it's not doing enough

:02:01. > :02:06.Ministers say they are workhng with Europe to look at ways

:02:07. > :02:11.of providing finance for shipping firms and ports.

:02:12. > :02:13.It's not an announcement th`t happened today, yesterday,

:02:14. > :02:18.This is something the industry has had over shx years

:02:19. > :02:24.Extra fuel costs was one of the reasons given

:02:25. > :02:27.for the scrapping of the Harwich to Denmark ferry service.

:02:28. > :02:36.Many hope Hull's ferry routds don't suffer a similar fate.

:02:37. > :02:40.Is there any chance of the government making

:02:41. > :02:50.Not for the first time, thex will argue their hands are tied by

:02:51. > :02:57.regulations. The shipping industry wants to equip new technology on

:02:58. > :03:02.their older vessels. Many whll argue that what will happen if thd east

:03:03. > :03:06.coast ferry routes are cut back or even closed, worst case scenario,

:03:07. > :03:11.traffic will get on the roads, driving south to the Channel ports,

:03:12. > :03:13.creating congestion. And pollution, which is what they are trying to

:03:14. > :03:15.stop. Thank you.

:03:16. > :03:17.This evening I spoke to Jamds Cole from the environmental pressure

:03:18. > :03:22.I asked him why making ferrhes use more expensive fuel was a good

:03:23. > :03:27.idea if it led to lorries h`ving to travel further to get to ports.

:03:28. > :03:34.I think what we are hearing and what you are saying is that the

:03:35. > :03:38.government needs to look at reducing the impact of all modes of

:03:39. > :03:41.transport, and we need to look at how we transition to a lower impact

:03:42. > :03:47.economy in the best possibld way. What's more important dash of ferry

:03:48. > :03:53.sailing or ferry sailing behng lost, and jobs, or reducing sulphur

:03:54. > :03:59.emissions? That is not a fahr question. That is the questhon on

:04:00. > :04:03.the table at the moment, isn't it? We have to look at the big picture.

:04:04. > :04:12.In the big picture, we don't have a choice of moving to know a `` of

:04:13. > :04:15.moving to a low impact economy. We have one planet of limited

:04:16. > :04:19.resources. If we are to thrhve and have an economy that thrives with

:04:20. > :04:23.businesses that thrive, it's not whether we can afford to make a

:04:24. > :04:26.change, it is if we can afford not to. We will follow that story.

:04:27. > :04:28.East Yorkshire has one of the highest number of convictions

:04:29. > :04:32.74 people were convicted in the county last year,

:04:54. > :04:57.There are also worries about staff morale and recrtitment.

:04:58. > :05:02.The head of the trust meets councillors tomorrow.

:05:03. > :05:04.The debts facing Lincolnshire's hospitals are among the highest

:05:05. > :05:08.Figures from the Labour Party suggest the United Lincolnshire

:05:09. > :05:13.Hospitals Trust has a deficht of nearly ?26 million.

:05:33. > :05:35.He also rejected claims by ` select committee that his department wasn't

:05:36. > :05:45.doing enough to protect comlunities at risk of flooding.

:05:46. > :05:52.The report attacked us for `sking to do things which we are alre`dy

:05:53. > :05:55.doing. We are spending a record sum of money. There is no one w`rrant as

:05:56. > :05:59.elastic behind these flood defences. There is no one that sees

:06:00. > :06:02.the economic value of protecting high quality agricultural l`nd. That

:06:03. > :06:07.was Owen Paterson. Typhoons from RAF Conningsbx's

:06:20. > :06:34.and through this evening We are finally going to see that

:06:35. > :06:38.cloud developing, a very we`k front bringing one or two spots

:06:39. > :06:41.of light rain or drizzle later, temperatures overnight fallhng back

:06:42. > :06:44.to around 13 or 14 degrees. So, a cloudy,
