:01:45. > :01:47.George Osborne, was at the site as the announcement was made this
:01:48. > :01:52.afternoon and said the company is Here's our Business Correspondent,

:02:01. > :02:02.for its innovation. And at Reckitt's factory in Hull

:03:22. > :03:29.Nearly 200 years on, today's commitment to the city is seen as
:03:30. > :03:43.Investors are coming here and approaching the City Council and
:03:44. > :03:48.speaking to members of Parliament so the government must now recognise
:03:49. > :03:49.that Hull, the city Hull, is a very important part of the Northern
:03:50. > :03:50.economy. Workers on their way home beepping
:03:51. > :04:01.in support of the announcement. We have massive talent here and we
:04:02. > :04:05.are delighted for the employers and the city. It is brilliant news and
:04:06. > :04:09.really good investment. It is really good for Hull as well.
:04:10. > :04:18.It should be open by 2018, creating high skilled jobs for the city.
:04:19. > :04:21.You saw the Chancellor, George Osborne in Sarah's report. I went to
:04:22. > :04:25.the Reckitt's laboratory in East Hull to meet him.
:04:26. > :04:27.Chancellor, how important is today?s announcement for Hull?
:04:28. > :04:30.This is a record investment by a much loved local company
:04:31. > :04:33.and it is further evidence that our long term economic plan is working
:04:34. > :04:40.These are good jobs, jobs in science, exactly the kind
:04:41. > :04:44.of thing we want to see more of in the United Kingdom, and it is part
:04:45. > :04:49.of the vision I have of a Northern powerhouse where Humberside is
:04:50. > :04:51.connected through to Leeds and Manchester and Liverpool
:04:52. > :04:54.across the North of England, not just with better transport links
:04:55. > :04:59.but with the kind of scientific investment we?re seeing today.
:05:00. > :05:02.The thing is that they could have chosen anywhere globally,
:05:03. > :05:06.And this follows on from Siemens just six months or so back.
:05:07. > :05:09.Well, we have had a string of great announcements for Hull and
:05:10. > :05:12.We?ve got investments in energy, investments in science
:05:13. > :05:15.and research, and companies like RB or Siemens, they could choose
:05:16. > :05:17.anywhere in the world to take this business and create jobs,
:05:18. > :05:22.And I think that is a real testament to local people,
:05:23. > :05:25.to Hull, but it is also a testament to what we are doing in the UK.
:05:26. > :05:28.Turning our economy around and making sure we see growth
:05:29. > :05:31.in all parts of the United Kingdom, rather than just in London
:05:32. > :05:36.Why do you think Hull is on a roll at the moment then?
:05:37. > :05:39.I think people see here a critical mass of skilled people, good new
:05:40. > :05:44.Energy is a really big, emerging industry.
:05:45. > :05:47.And then you have a company like RB, who have been here for hundreds
:05:48. > :05:51.of years, literally, choosing to make their future here as well.
:05:52. > :05:55.And what we have got to make sure is that Hull is connected to other
:05:56. > :05:58.great Northern cities and that we hook up Hull as part of the Northern
:05:59. > :06:02.powerhouse and we really maximise the potential of this area.
:06:03. > :06:05.So we need the electrification, don?t we, to Selby?
:06:06. > :06:08.We do need better transport links, that is part of what I have set out
:06:09. > :06:13.In the past when we have talked about connecting up
:06:14. > :06:15.the North it has been a conversation about Manchester and Leeds.
:06:16. > :06:19.I wanted to make sure that Hull was not left out of that conversation.
:06:20. > :06:23.You're a very good ambassador for Hull, aren?t you?
:06:24. > :06:27.Well it's great to be here with this good news.

:06:55. > :06:57.still employs more than a thousand people at its east Hull factory.

:07:15. > :07:18.cleanliness that the product first took off and some are still around
:07:19. > :07:23.today. The family's first business in Boston had not gone well but it
:07:24. > :07:27.was after they moved north to East Hull that it flourished into a
:07:28. > :07:33.global empire. From the beginning be this new technology. In the 1950s
:07:34. > :07:39.they were the first company in Hull to install a computer. They were at
:07:40. > :07:44.the forefront of everything. New ways of building things,
:07:45. > :07:48.computerisation, all sorts of ways. James Reckitt was like many Quakers
:07:49. > :07:53.at the time the damage to improve the lives of those who worked for

:08:32. > :08:37.Reckitt 's bats. And it was a short walk from here. The companies say
:08:38. > :08:43.their purpose is to help people lead healthier lives and have happier
:08:44. > :08:46.homes. That is now on a vast international scale. It is not very
:08:47. > :08:48.far from James Reckitt original vision and he built more than 600
:08:49. > :08:55.homes in garden village. Also today,
:08:56. > :08:56.a multi million pound investment by Sainsburys could create hundreds
:08:57. > :08:58.of jobs in Scunthorpe. It's joining forces with budget
:08:59. > :09:01.brand Netto and is believed to have plans to build a brand new
:09:02. > :09:04.distribution centre in the town. The two supermarkets want to open
:09:05. > :09:07.a number of new stores Detectives hunting for a suspect
:09:08. > :09:15.in the murder of a Bridlington guesthouse owner have released
