:00:00. > :00:07.you pack your jumpers if you are going away.

:00:08. > :00:09.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North.

:00:10. > :00:13.A brain damaged teenager prepares to come home to Lincolnshire more

:00:14. > :00:27.than a year after the accident that almost killed him.

:00:28. > :00:32.He has been away from his friends and family for a long time. I

:00:33. > :00:35.believe this will spur him on even more.

:00:36. > :00:39.Four days after becoming trapped by floodwater, there's still no sign

:00:40. > :00:40.of stranded cows being rescued in East Yorkshire.

:00:41. > :00:47.The problem is you can entice them with food, but you can't tell them

:00:48. > :00:54.what to do. It is not likely to go chain. I am live near burst wake or

:00:55. > :00:58.another attempt to bring them to safety is under way.

:00:59. > :01:01.Hull City fans are told the club will spend money to strengthen

:01:02. > :01:05.The singing Skegness bus drivers who are spending the summer

:01:06. > :01:22.And I will be back later in the programme for a full forecast.

:01:23. > :01:26.They've spent thousands of pounds driving to Surrey to see

:01:27. > :01:29.their son, and now the family of a Lincolnshire teenager who

:01:30. > :01:32.suffered a brain injury after he was knocked from his bike are getting

:01:33. > :01:38.Ryan Smith from Chapel St Leonards has been receiving therapy

:01:39. > :01:41.at a specialist centre is now ready to live with his family again.

:01:42. > :01:55.Jill Archbold has been to see the changes and meet his Dad Mark.

:01:56. > :02:02.These are the doors to his bedroom. Unfortunately, you can't get

:02:03. > :02:03.upstairs now so we have had to change the games room into his new

:02:04. > :02:06.room. A new build to mark a new start,

:02:07. > :02:08.Mark Smith is modifying his home ready for the return of

:02:09. > :02:19.his son Ryan, who's spent 13 months He has been away from his friends

:02:20. > :02:25.and family for a long time. It is a labour of love and I'm enjoying it,

:02:26. > :02:31.helping him to get it done and ready. We are on a tight schedule.

:02:32. > :02:36.He was hit by a van whilst cycling to work.

:02:37. > :02:39.His recovery, learning to live with a brain injury, has been aided

:02:40. > :02:44.by staff at the charitable Children's Trust in Surrey.

:02:45. > :02:51.Very strong lad. Very strong lad, I know. What position to be like to

:02:52. > :02:58.come? First. The support of Ryan's family

:02:59. > :03:01.has been constant and they have Back in Lincolnshire,

:03:02. > :03:03.financial help from East Lindsey District Council means

:03:04. > :03:06.the family can build an extension, Much of the work is being done

:03:07. > :03:21.by two lifelong family friends. Every time I went to see him, it was

:03:22. > :03:26.like Christmas, it was getting better every time I went to see him.

:03:27. > :03:31.We knew he was there still, we could tell, even in the early days. You

:03:32. > :03:34.always want to do something to help, if you can. And we are doing it the

:03:35. > :03:37.way we can help. His sister Rachel has driven

:03:38. > :03:47.thousands of miles completing He has made loads of progress. So we

:03:48. > :03:52.are hoping that when he's home, there will be more. He will become a

:03:53. > :03:53.lot better at home, in his own environment.

:03:54. > :03:56.Mark built this house years ago and now he's helping put the finishing

:03:57. > :04:00.touches to Ryan's room, he only has to wait two more weeks to have

:04:01. > :04:11.I'm joined live in the studio by Ryan's dad, Mark.

:04:12. > :04:20.Good evening. Nice to see you. When the accident happened, the prognosis

:04:21. > :04:27.looked horrendous. Is it hard for you to believe that he is going to

:04:28. > :04:30.be home again? Yes. It has been a roller`coaster of emotions over the

:04:31. > :04:38.last year. The prognosis was extremely poor to start with. But he

:04:39. > :04:42.has done... He has overcome some massive obstacles and he is doing

:04:43. > :04:47.really well. He has defied the odds, really. Yes, the prognosis was

:04:48. > :04:52.poor, we were told he wouldn't be able to do anything for himself and

:04:53. > :04:58.he has proved them wrong. Where did he get that drive from? He has

:04:59. > :05:02.always been a winner. Coming second isn't an option. And we are all a

:05:03. > :05:08.bit driven like that in our family, so it is probably a bit genetic.

:05:09. > :05:16.That moment when he came out of the coma, it must have been 80 Joker. It

:05:17. > :05:23.was. We never expected him to speak again. And to hear him speak, it

:05:24. > :05:28.blew us off the ceiling. Ryan didn't want to mess up his hair so he

:05:29. > :05:33.didn't wear a cycle helmet. Did you try to persuade him that he should?

:05:34. > :05:38.I have always advocated the wearing of a helmet and Ryan was no

:05:39. > :05:43.exception to that. Unfortunately, that day, I couldn't get him to wear

:05:44. > :05:48.one. As a paramedic, how much difference do they make?

:05:49. > :05:52.Substantial. I'm not saying he wouldn't have had a brain injury,

:05:53. > :05:59.but I am sure it would have been less severe. It is the small impact

:06:00. > :06:04.as well. The brain is extremely vascular and bleeds profusely, so

:06:05. > :06:09.they do make remarkable protection. Should cyclists be made to wear

:06:10. > :06:13.them? In Jersey, it is 14 and under, so it is a step in the right

:06:14. > :06:20.direction, but should we be made to wear helmets? I believe so. The

:06:21. > :06:23.roads get busier. The road conditions are deteriorating, and

:06:24. > :06:28.there is more traffic. Cyclists are exposed as it is, so a little bit of

:06:29. > :06:32.protection on the head, the part of the body that can't be repaired, it

:06:33. > :06:38.is vital. Coming into work today, knowing I was going to be meeting

:06:39. > :06:42.you, you see so many people without helmets on their bikes. What would

:06:43. > :06:49.you say to them? Unfortunately, Ryan had the attitude of, it's not going

:06:50. > :06:54.to happen to me. And it did. That is the sort of... Thought processes

:06:55. > :07:00.people go through that it isn't going to happen to us.

:07:01. > :07:04.Unfortunately, a split second decision can change our lives. And

:07:05. > :07:09.you wouldn't want anybody to go through what you have been through.

:07:10. > :07:15.Certainly not. It has been a terrible year for us. It hasn't all

:07:16. > :07:19.been doom and gloom, but we have a different boy now. He's never going

:07:20. > :07:24.to be the boy we had. So it is a difficult pill to swallow. It is

:07:25. > :07:28.good to see you. Thank you and I wish you and your family well. Thank

:07:29. > :07:34.you. We do like to throw this one open.

:07:35. > :07:38.You have heard Mark's views on cyclists wearing helmets, so is it

:07:39. > :07:46.time that wearing a helmet was made law in this country? We look forward

:07:47. > :07:50.to getting your views. Those who are against it, they say that drivers

:07:51. > :08:06.tend to drive closer to bicycles. Tell us your thoughts.

:08:07. > :08:09.The Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson has accused the Boston

:08:10. > :08:12.and Skegness MP Mark Simmonds of giving politicians a bad name.

:08:13. > :08:15.Mr Simmonds has announced he's quitting his job next year

:08:16. > :08:18.because he claims his expenses don't cover the cost

:08:19. > :08:23.Our Political Editor Tim Iredale joins us live.

:08:24. > :08:36.Well, Alan Johnson is the only MP in our area who has so far been willing

:08:37. > :08:41.to comment on Mark Simmons decision to step down. He announced earlier

:08:42. > :08:44.this week he would not be contesting the Boston and Skegness constituency

:08:45. > :08:48.at the general election. He said one of the reasons he was leaving

:08:49. > :08:53.politics was because his Westminster expenses did not cover the cost of

:08:54. > :08:59.renting a home in London, which is big enough to accommodate his whole

:09:00. > :09:05.family. Remember, he could claim ?27,000 on top of his ?90,000 a year

:09:06. > :09:10.ministerial salary. This is what the former Labour Cabinet minister Alan

:09:11. > :09:16.Johnson had to say. My worry is is it besmirches us all. The ball will

:09:17. > :09:19.say, what are MPs doing? They get their salaries, they get an

:09:20. > :09:26.allowance, and you get an extra salary if you are a minister. So it

:09:27. > :09:30.becomes what are MPs talking about? But this is just about Mark

:09:31. > :09:34.Simmons. My conservative colleagues would be saying the same thing. We

:09:35. > :09:40.have no gripes about our pay all conditions. Meanwhile, the

:09:41. > :09:44.Conservative Party has said that it could take some time to select a

:09:45. > :09:47.successor as the Tory candidate in Boston and Skegness because they

:09:48. > :09:50.want expecting his resignation. UKIP,

:09:51. > :09:51.which is targeting the seat heavily, say their candidate should be

:09:52. > :09:54.in place by next month and there's speculation the former MP Neil

:09:55. > :09:57.Hamilton will throw his hat into The former Lincolnshire schools head

:09:58. > :10:05.teacher Richard Gilliland says he'll fight charges brought

:10:06. > :10:09.against him for fraud. Yesterday,

:10:10. > :10:11.the former chief executive of the Priory Federation, a chain

:10:12. > :10:14.of academy schools in the county, Today his solicitor said

:10:15. > :10:19.his client denies all wrongdoing and will vigorously contest

:10:20. > :10:24.the charges in court. The priory's former finance

:10:25. > :10:25.director, Stephen Davies from Lincoln,

:10:26. > :10:29.is facing three similar charges. Both men will appear before Lincoln

:10:30. > :10:39.magistrates next month. A ?280 million project will

:10:40. > :10:42.mean trains run faster and more That's the promise from Network Rail

:10:43. > :10:45.as work to modernise the line between Gainsborough

:10:46. > :10:47.and Doncaster begins this weekend. The line will be closed

:10:48. > :10:49.for a fortnight from tomorrow. A replacement bus service

:10:50. > :11:05.is being provided. A herd of cattle has been stranded

:11:06. > :11:09.on`farm water in East Yorkshire. We first bought you this story on

:11:10. > :11:12.Wednesday, but today the situation is becoming cruising a difficult for

:11:13. > :11:18.the livestock and also for the farmers trying to catch them because

:11:19. > :11:21.of rising water levels. `` is becoming increasingly difficult.

:11:22. > :11:23.Our reporter Phillip Norton is in Burstwick for us tonight.

:11:24. > :11:33.Let me show you the problem. There is a group of cattle over there,

:11:34. > :11:39.more than 50 heifers. Over here is their pen, the key to getting these

:11:40. > :11:44.animals onto dry land. If you take a look back over there, you can see

:11:45. > :11:48.the farmer, he's desperately trying to lead his cattle to dry land, but

:11:49. > :11:56.his cattle are giving him a hard time.

:11:57. > :12:08.Every day, every three hours, this is how Simon Saunt is trying to

:12:09. > :12:12.I think they are enjoying themselves. Hello, lads! Come on! ,

:12:13. > :12:14.! Every day, every three hours,

:12:15. > :12:17.this is how Simon Saunt is trying to While many have been rescued,

:12:18. > :12:30.there are still more than 60 cattle A bag of food

:12:31. > :12:42.the tempting treat to them into We have made a lovely crowd last

:12:43. > :12:48.night, stretching from the gate right into the sheds. Inside the

:12:49. > :12:52.shed, we made a lovely pen where they can go in. And they went in.

:12:53. > :12:55.Unfortunately, no one was here to keep them in because it must've been

:12:56. > :13:02.2am or 3M. Heavy rain from the remnants

:13:03. > :13:06.of Hurricane Bertha combined with a clogged up Burstwick Drain and high

:13:07. > :13:21.tides to create the perfect storm ` Every day, you can see them losing

:13:22. > :13:26.flesh. They will not eat the silage here, they won't eat the silage on

:13:27. > :13:29.the other field, and there is very little grass to eat.

:13:30. > :13:34.As the cattle approach the pen one more time, Simon holds his breath.

:13:35. > :13:46.Plenty of water, straw, silage, TLC, but all they want to do is... Here

:13:47. > :13:51.they go! What did I tell you? You can't wind, can you? And they will

:13:52. > :13:53.just carry on standing in the water. Another miss,

:13:54. > :14:09.and the battle goes on. Come on! I give up for three hours.

:14:10. > :14:14.Yes, that will do me. Well, that was earlier this afternoon. He is now

:14:15. > :14:23.back out there. He has walked along that far fence. We have spoken to

:14:24. > :14:27.the Environment Agency. They save this water here, the levels are not

:14:28. > :14:32.high enough to use pumps but they are sending a boat and a team of

:14:33. > :14:36.workmen to come down to clear those weeds out of the waterways, and,

:14:37. > :14:39.hopefully, drain the water off the land.

:14:40. > :14:42.Thank you, and a lot of people have mentioned the cows to me this week.

:14:43. > :14:46.The cows are enjoying that water! Still ahead tonight, the man running

:14:47. > :14:49.seven marathons in seven days And the bus drivers from Skegness

:14:50. > :15:19.whose singing is causing a stir Thank you for this photograph. My

:15:20. > :15:24.favourite e`mail, I would like to give my partner a surprise present.

:15:25. > :15:30.Does Keady give out photographs? He thinks she is adorable!

:15:31. > :15:44.You've been a very good PA, Peter. It'll quieten down in a week or so.

:15:45. > :15:48.Well done on your promotion to my PA. This weekend, we continue with

:15:49. > :15:51.the theme of breezy and cool. It will get very cool with

:15:52. > :15:59.temperatures just about struggling in the mid`teens. The good news is

:16:00. > :16:03.that it is going to be largely dry tomorrow but cloudy. Overnight,

:16:04. > :16:09.Saturday into Sunday, a band of rain. Writer on Sunday but a windy

:16:10. > :16:20.day, and very windy overnight Sunday into Monday. We have had a few

:16:21. > :16:23.showers earlier on. They are still affecting Lincolnshire, they will

:16:24. > :16:27.fade away through the evening. It will be a dry night with clear

:16:28. > :16:36.spells with temperatures falling back to around 12 or 13. So, the sun

:16:37. > :16:46.will rise at 5:41am, setting just before 8:30pm. Tomorrow, it doesn't

:16:47. > :16:52.look like too bad day. It will be windy cloudy, at largely dry.

:16:53. > :16:58.Variable amounts of cloud, broken up, most places staying dry, but the

:16:59. > :17:07.breeze will freshen and it will not feel that warm. Temperatures are

:17:08. > :17:15.getting up to around 18 or 19. Overnight rain into Sunday, clearing

:17:16. > :17:20.away to the south, brighten up `` brightening up later. On Sunday, the

:17:21. > :17:24.wind will be stronger and we have an alert Sunday into Monday for very

:17:25. > :17:27.strong winds. So if I send this on to anon, can

:17:28. > :17:32.you deal with it? Of course. You realise the flood

:17:33. > :17:34.gates are open! Would you like a signed picture as

:17:35. > :17:38.well? Have a good night. A Lincolnshire man running seven

:17:39. > :17:40.marathons in seven days has just completed

:17:41. > :17:42.the latest leg of his challenge. Ben Gibbons is running

:17:43. > :17:45.from the North West coast to Skegness, raising money

:17:46. > :17:47.for a sports foundation set up in his brother's memory after he

:17:48. > :17:50.died of a brain haemorrhage. Jessica Lane has been

:17:51. > :18:03.following his progress. Supported by friends and almost back

:18:04. > :18:08.in his home county but Ben Gibbons doesn't stop until Sunday afternoon.

:18:09. > :18:13.I keep looking at the map, keep looking at where I am, where I have

:18:14. > :18:20.to go. It looks better than it did on Monday. So, I'm going to check in

:18:21. > :18:22.now, get a cold bath, have something to eat.

:18:23. > :18:25.Ben started in Morecambe on the North West coast of England

:18:26. > :18:28.He's run through Preston, Manchester and the Peak District.

:18:29. > :18:32.He's raising money for the Adam Gibbons Sports Foundation.

:18:33. > :18:35.It was set up in memory of Ben's brother.

:18:36. > :18:38.Adam was just starting a course in sport coaching when he died

:18:39. > :18:45.in 2008 from an undiagnosed brain haemorrhage.

:18:46. > :18:57.Adam was very keen on a wide range of sports, football, badminton,

:18:58. > :19:03.golf. It put a big grin on his face. He's probably looking down on me

:19:04. > :19:07.thinking what are you doing? But I think he would be proud of me.

:19:08. > :19:09.The foundation provides funding to pay for equipment, training

:19:10. > :19:13.In the past six years, it has donated over ?40,000 to

:19:14. > :19:33.The training costumes can cost 30 `?40. And the other costumes can

:19:34. > :19:36.cost anything up to ?100. The goggles might cost ?40. It turns out

:19:37. > :19:41.to be quite expensive. Now Ben is on the home straight back

:19:42. > :19:45.in Lincolnshire with just two more Traders in Lincoln have been given

:19:46. > :20:05.a week to remove advertising boards Should they be removed? A big

:20:06. > :20:09.response. Small businesses cannot afford high`end advertising so why

:20:10. > :20:29.not have a sign outside? Keep the signs.

:20:30. > :20:35.Hull City Manager Steve Bruce says he has

:20:36. > :20:38."irons in the fire" as he looks to spend the ?12 million earned through

:20:39. > :20:42.The Tigers go to Queens Park Rangers for their first game

:20:43. > :20:47.Looking ahead, here's our sports reporter Simon Clark.

:20:48. > :20:51.The season has already started for Hull City.

:20:52. > :20:54.A European win over the Slovak side Trencin means that they should

:20:55. > :21:01.In today's news conference, though, questions for Steve Bruce were not

:21:02. > :21:05.so much about QPR, as his plans to replace ?12 million pound striker

:21:06. > :21:20.The offer which came in was too good to turn down. Now we have to find a

:21:21. > :21:24.replacement, you're right, but we hope we can and will invest the

:21:25. > :21:30.money into the squad, and make the squad bigger and better, and we hope

:21:31. > :21:33.we can find a replacement that can be the equivalent of Shane Long.

:21:34. > :21:36.And fans are queuing for tickets for the next European tie in Belgium

:21:37. > :21:38.are generally optimistic about their team's Premier League

:21:39. > :21:52.It is nice to have a good feeling about it. It really does lift your

:21:53. > :21:56.spirits. 11 or 11 or 14 or 14, big names don't wind anything in

:21:57. > :22:02.football, it is what happens on the pitch. I think it has put pressure

:22:03. > :22:04.on us. If we cannot replace, I don't know.

:22:05. > :22:06.Bruce has been active this summer bringing in Harry Maguire

:22:07. > :22:08.from Sheffield United, Dundee United's Andy Robertson, the

:22:09. > :22:11.talented Tom Ince of Blackpool, and the well regarded Robert Snodgrass,

:22:12. > :22:20.But the question remains, who replaces Long?

:22:21. > :22:29.With the money we have, we invested back into the squad. And that will

:22:30. > :22:33.make is bigger, better, stronger. It is a curious start to the Premier

:22:34. > :22:39.League season. But given their cup final appearance last season, there

:22:40. > :22:40.is a real sense of optimism amongst their fans about this team and this

:22:41. > :22:43.manager. And there's coverage of Hull City's
