:00:00. > :00:12.blustery. Thank you very much. That is all from us. Now

:00:13. > :00:23.North. The headlines tonight: The lunch police checking children's

:00:24. > :00:40.pack`ups for banned food. Hull helps to solve a recruhtment

:00:41. > :01:02.National Powerboat Championships say it may head up the coast next year.

:01:03. > :01:05.On strike ` the construction workers walking out over the state of their

:01:06. > :01:08.toilets. The ?1 million fundraising campaign

:01:09. > :01:22.for guide dogs which has taken nearly 50 years.

:01:23. > :01:37.A school in Hull has tonight changed a controversial policy on p`cked

:01:38. > :01:39.Academy gave 11`year`olds jobs as packed lunch police to check

:01:40. > :01:42.other pupils' lunches for chocolate, crisps and sausage rolls. M`ny

:01:43. > :01:45.parents say it is up to thel what goes in the lunchbox. After we

:01:46. > :01:48.contacted the school today, they changed the policy and said the

:01:49. > :01:50.responsibility for checking pack`ups would now pass to teachers. Phillip

:01:51. > :02:10.The morning ritual of packing lunches for Rachel's two chhldren.

:02:11. > :02:13.A child's lunchbox, inside the sausage roll, chocolate and crisps

:02:14. > :02:23.that will get a warning from the packed lunch policd,

:02:24. > :02:25.a school imposed police force of Year 6 pupils that sends

:02:26. > :02:34.warnings home to fellow students parents for unhealthy food.

:02:35. > :02:47.for their dinner. It is the parents' decision.

:02:48. > :02:57.It is ridiculous. It is not down to staff or children what the kids eat

:02:58. > :02:59.Rachel says her children have been returning home hungry,

:03:00. > :03:07.afraid to eat items which could land them in trouble

:03:08. > :03:11.I would rather pack them up with something than worry it's something

:03:12. > :03:14.At the school today, many parents were unhappy.

:03:15. > :03:17.It is disgusting where they can get ten`year`olds other children's bags.

:03:18. > :03:20.I did not know who is polichng the ten`year`olds. My children, if they

:03:21. > :03:23.see the police coming round, they hide the food so they do not get

:03:24. > :03:27.into trouble. It is wrong, putting them in a predicament that they do

:03:28. > :03:29.not need to be in. It can c`use arguments, as well.

:03:30. > :03:32.The issue of healthy school meals was first highlighted by

:03:33. > :03:34.Jamie Oliver in 2005 when hd managed to remove now infamous

:03:35. > :03:41.Another high`profile incident saw parents feeding children fish

:03:42. > :03:44.and chips and burgers through a school fence in Rotherham as they

:03:45. > :03:48.And it's not the first time Hall Road Academy has hit the he`dlines.

:03:49. > :03:53.At the height of Euro 2012, the school banned football

:03:54. > :04:37.The statement says there has been a huge abbreviation `` radiathon

:04:38. > :04:40.``variation and the types of food brought in for school lunchds and

:04:41. > :04:45.the policy domains but will no longer be policed by pupils.

:04:46. > :04:48.Jo Nicholas is from the Children's Food Trust, a charity which offers

:04:49. > :04:51.advice and training to help kids have a balanced diet. I started by

:04:52. > :04:58.asking her what she made of lunch boxes being checked.

:04:59. > :05:07.I think it is up to every individual school to decide what is best for

:05:08. > :05:12.the pupils and for themselvds. It needs to be done with full `nd

:05:13. > :05:16.proper consultation with parents. Parents have told us that they

:05:17. > :05:21.should choose what goes at ` lunch box. Should the school suspdct that?

:05:22. > :05:28.I think it is all about givhng consistent messages. In the canteen

:05:29. > :05:31.at lunch time pupils cannot have things like confectionery and salty

:05:32. > :05:36.snacks like crisps and sugary drinks. A classy children are taught

:05:37. > :05:42.about healthy eating and it is important for those consistdnt

:05:43. > :05:47.messages. What do you say to parents who regularly put crests and sausage

:05:48. > :05:54.rolls and chocolates in the lunchbox of her son or daughter? We would

:05:55. > :06:00.encourage parents to follow the packed lunch policies of schools

:06:01. > :06:02.where they are in place. I would not say a child should have those in the

:06:03. > :06:08.lunchbox. Who should dictate what's in a

:06:09. > :06:12.packed lunch? Do parents know best Armed police officers have

:06:13. > :06:44.surrounded a house in Hull. The emergency services were

:06:45. > :06:53.called to Beverley Road at just before five

:06:54. > :06:55.o'clock this afternoon. Humberside Police have confirmed that they are

:06:56. > :06:58.currently dealing with an incident A pilot scheme to give school pupils

:06:59. > :07:13.a flu vaccination is being tried out in Lincolnshire.

:07:14. > :07:15.Nurses are visiting all secondary schools to give the vaccine, which

:07:16. > :07:19.is sprayed up the nose rathdr than by injection. It's hoped thd scheme

:07:20. > :07:22.will eventually be introducdd Demolition work has begun at a

:07:23. > :07:27.former hotel in Hull. Hull City Council says The New York Hotel

:07:28. > :07:30.which is opposite the railw`y station had become unsafe. Ht's

:07:31. > :07:33.hoped the area will be redeveloped The Government is to give an extra

:07:34. > :07:39.?2 million to help improve rail services between Lincoln and

:07:40. > :07:41.Nottingham. The additional funding will be used to run faster lore

:07:42. > :07:44.frequent trains. The changes are expected to be made by May next

:07:45. > :07:48.year. The main one

:07:49. > :07:51.for us is that there is a ndw It will be leaving Lincoln puite

:07:52. > :07:56.early in the morning but arriving Whether that's connectivity to other

:07:57. > :07:59.trains, or for people who pdrhaps need to get to work early in

:08:00. > :08:02.Nottingham, or for appointmdnts over that way if they are in bushness

:08:03. > :08:05.meeting clients in Nottingh`m. That's all to the good

:08:06. > :08:08.for businesses and those th`t live, It's claimed Britain is at risk of

:08:09. > :08:19.being left with a "one shot" Army that could never fight in more than

:08:20. > :08:22.one country. The Government wants to double the number of reservhsts

:08:23. > :08:27.while dramatically reducing the regular Army. But with recrtitment

:08:28. > :08:30.much slower than expected the army performed a stunt in the centre of

:08:31. > :08:33.Hull to try to enlist more part timers, who start their service on

:08:34. > :08:36.?36 pounds a day. Crispin Rolfe A PR stunt being abseiled

:08:37. > :08:53.into the heart of Hull. The army in urgent need

:08:54. > :08:54.of reservists, part`time soldiers who'll fhll

:08:55. > :08:57.the gap left by government cuts They'll see 102,000 regular soldiers

:08:58. > :09:00.are being reduced to 82,000 by 020, with an aim

:09:01. > :09:01.of then increasing reserves But is today's recruitment drive

:09:02. > :09:06.an admission that the army hs Overall, the reserves incre`sed by

:09:07. > :09:10.2% last year. We have stoppdd the decline we were experiencing in

:09:11. > :09:12.previous years and a five`ydar programme, we are investing in it

:09:13. > :09:15.and confident to make the ntmbers. That confidence isn't shared by

:09:16. > :09:18.auditors, which is why the `rmy s come to Hull, traditionally one

:09:19. > :09:20.of its strongest recruitment areas. Steve Andrew is about to go

:09:21. > :09:27.for his first week's training. Looking forward to that and seeing

:09:28. > :09:30.where it takes me. Are you disappointed it is not full`time?

:09:31. > :09:46.But it could lead to a full`time job Young people

:09:47. > :09:50.could get great skills and they have The Army's been welcomed here

:09:51. > :10:04.by Hull City Council. But with no full`time jobs on offer,

:10:05. > :10:11.will people be signing up? No, because there are coursds out

:10:12. > :10:16.there like team`building. I was interested in a chef, different

:10:17. > :10:19.opportunity. This is what reservists

:10:20. > :10:33.could be signing up for. them is the government's nedd to

:10:34. > :10:40.create a new cost effective Army by So opportunities

:10:41. > :11:00.for Hull are there but underlying We need to reserve this bec`use of

:11:01. > :11:06.the ad very economical in kdeping spare capacity in peacetime and

:11:07. > :11:16.offer a real opportunity for the young men and women who join them.

:11:17. > :11:36.Is the marketing and recruitment pool? ``poor? This is exactly the

:11:37. > :11:45.sort of thing we can sure pdople how exciting it is to be to be `

:11:46. > :11:49.reservist. A former colonel said the move to reserve this is

:11:50. > :11:54.short`sighted and another one said it is like moving from comprehensive

:11:55. > :12:15.insurance to third`party insurance and we wonder if it is army on the

:12:16. > :12:23.cheap question the Mac? ``Army on the cheap? No, in both world war as

:12:24. > :12:35.the reserve has played a crtcial role. Joining the reserves offers

:15:17. > :15:26.The sun rises in the morning just after seven o'clock and the high

:15:27. > :15:33.water in Hull is at half past 1 in the morning. There will be some

:15:34. > :15:58.sunny spells and the risk of 12 showers. ``one or two showers.

:15:59. > :16:03.Thursday will offer a taste of autumn and Friday looks find but

:16:04. > :16:18.then autumn really arrives overnight and it will be unstable over the

:16:19. > :16:20.weekend. One lady has asked you to stop putting your hand in your

:16:21. > :16:36.trouser pocket. See you tomorrow. Trading Standards officers hn

:16:37. > :16:38.Lincolnshire have raided shops and seized hundreds of packets of what

:16:39. > :16:41.are described as legal highs. Scientists at the Universitx of

:16:42. > :16:43.Lincoln are currently testing the powders to check if they contain any

:16:44. > :16:47.illegal substances. Many sililar drugs were made illegal by the

:16:48. > :16:49.government in 2010, and expdrts say manufacturers are making tiny

:16:50. > :16:52.changes to the drugs to get round This is one

:16:53. > :16:59.of 1100 packets seized by Trading Standards in Lincolnshire

:17:00. > :17:00.recently. Sold legally in shops

:17:01. > :17:02.on the high street, now scientists are analysing them to

:17:03. > :17:07.find out exactly what they contain. We have powders and pills

:17:08. > :17:13.and then herbal products. The powders and the pills txpically

:17:22. > :17:30.substances, legal highs are designed to have the same effect

:17:31. > :17:33.as illegal drugs but they h`ve been changed ever so slightly

:17:34. > :17:36.at a molecular level so thex are However, the most recent figures

:17:37. > :17:43.show the number of deaths lhnked to legal highs in the UK rose

:17:44. > :17:47.from 10 in 2009, to 68 in 2012. The concern is these

:17:48. > :17:49.substances are not regulated. Manufactured in premises

:17:50. > :17:59.which have got no quality control, no safety precautions in pl`ce

:18:00. > :18:05.and no`one knows what the short or long term effects of these products

:18:06. > :18:09.are going to be on the user. The owner of one

:18:10. > :18:12.of the places recently raiddd says she only buys from suppliers she

:18:13. > :18:16.trusts and never sells to children. She worries targeting shops

:18:17. > :18:18.like hers will force the sale of legal highs underground,

:18:19. > :18:21.making them even harder to control. The problem is a lot

:18:22. > :18:23.of this stuff is now being sold for easy money under the cotnter

:18:24. > :18:27.by people who are not displ`ying it, by houses that I know of

:18:28. > :18:31.in Boston that are just litdrally Trading Standards said it whll

:18:32. > :18:37.continue to strictly monitor legal highs and if harmful substances are

:27:06. > :27:17.to ask parents what they should put in packed lunches. Shirley says she

:27:18. > :27:20.would rather give her child something she knew they would eat

:27:21. > :27:30.rather than have them be hungry all day. Another lady says that parents

:27:31. > :27:33.who put unhealthy stuff and a packed lunch might need educating
