:00:00. > :00:07.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North.

:00:08. > :00:13.The gamble that paid off - thousands of steel workers

:00:14. > :00:16.who agreed to a wage cut will return to full pay after helping

:00:17. > :00:28.I have made massive sacrifices and I don't just mean in the pay. It was

:00:29. > :00:31.certainly worth it. A ambulance on the way

:00:32. > :00:34.to an emergency crashes, A murderous and divided town -

:00:35. > :00:38.how quoting national newspaper stories has put this vicar

:00:39. > :00:41.in the headlines. More than ?100,000 could be spent

:00:42. > :00:43.on a special machine to blast chewing gum

:00:44. > :00:58.from Hull's new paving. I have literally walked around for

:00:59. > :01:04.two minutes and found nearly 100 pieces of chewing gum on the ground

:01:05. > :01:08.in Victoria Square. Some bitterly cold air on the way tomorrow.

:01:09. > :01:10.Probably the coldest day of the winter season so far. Join me later

:01:11. > :01:21.for the forecast. A gamble has paid off for hundreds

:01:22. > :01:24.of Scunthorpe steelworkers, who last year agreed to take a pay

:01:25. > :01:28.cut in order to ensure the long term That's according to new owners

:01:29. > :01:31.British Steel, who today announced that not only are they in profit,

:01:32. > :01:34.but soon they'll reverse the three per cent pay cut

:01:35. > :01:36.as fortunes improve. It comes as the company,

:01:37. > :01:39.who only took over seven months ago, announced dozens more jobs

:01:40. > :01:41.at the plant. Our Business Correspondent Leanne

:01:42. > :02:14.Brown is at the steelworks now - It doesn't seem long ago since I was

:02:15. > :02:15.here talking about job losses but British still managed to turn it

:02:16. > :02:23.around. -- British steel. It was a misty murky start,

:02:24. > :02:25.but there was nothing gloomy about today for workers

:02:26. > :02:27.at British steel. It was a gamble for the unions to

:02:28. > :02:32.agree a pay cut but it paid off... There is pride in wearing

:02:33. > :02:34.the British Steel logo. There is pride working

:02:35. > :02:36.for British Steel. Everybody is in an upbeat mood

:02:37. > :02:39.and I don't just mean on the works, in the town,

:02:40. > :02:41.in the communities, everybody's upbeat about the success story of

:02:42. > :02:58.British Steel. It's their cost saving measures and

:02:59. > :03:03.Panther is one still far Hinkley point that the cell to turn things

:03:04. > :03:12.around. There are also making steel for Algeria.

:03:13. > :03:14.We thought that was just one central commercial

:03:15. > :03:16.organisation and it was just one approach, yes.

:03:17. > :03:18.As you know we have been splitting it inbetween

:03:19. > :03:21.the four major products, the rail business, the rough

:03:22. > :03:24.The more bridges, the more skyscrapers, or whatever,

:03:25. > :03:39.It's their cost saving measures and contracts like this one -

:03:40. > :03:41.providing steel for accommodation at Hinckley point power station

:03:42. > :03:43.in Somerset that's helping to turn things around.

:03:44. > :03:45.-- They're also making rail track for projects in Algeria and Italy.

:03:46. > :03:49.It doesn't seem long ago since I was here

:03:50. > :03:51.There's been concern about the future of the Scunthorpe steel

:03:52. > :03:55.In October 2015 owners TATA announced 900 job losses.

:03:56. > :03:57.In April 2016 Uk-based investment firm Greybull Capital began

:03:58. > :03:59.negotiations to take over the company with a promise to invest

:04:00. > :04:03.Then In June they officially took over - naming

:04:04. > :04:06.And today came announcements of positive financial results,

:04:07. > :04:08.with plans to reverse pay cuts and create more jobs.

:04:09. > :04:10.With trainee and admin roles available the company

:04:11. > :04:14.It's their cost saving measures and Panther is one still far Hinkley

:04:15. > :04:19.Coming from a customer service background that could help me. I'm

:04:20. > :04:21.looking for a practical way of getting an apprenticeship here next

:04:22. > :04:25.year. The company still has a long way

:04:26. > :04:38.to go but it's a promising start The industry still faces many

:04:39. > :04:41.challenges and as well as continuing to fund new projects around the

:04:42. > :04:45.world -- secure new projects the company needs support the Government

:04:46. > :04:50.and says it wants assurances that British Steel will be used and UK

:04:51. > :04:53.projects. But they say they are continuing to top of the Government

:04:54. > :04:54.and the fact they were down in London yesterday and they are on the

:04:55. > :05:01.right track. Senior health officials say

:05:02. > :05:08.they can give people in Lincolnshire much better care -

:05:09. > :05:12.but only if big changes are made. small group of protesters

:05:13. > :05:15.were outside a meeting in Sleaford this morning where all proposals

:05:16. > :05:17.were being looked at -- this morning where all proposals

:05:18. > :05:20.were being looked at - I have asked if we can go and.

:05:21. > :05:35.services in Lincoln. I've been in and asked

:05:36. > :05:37.if we could go in and They are discussing the options

:05:38. > :05:42.for our health care, You know, they're not actually

:05:43. > :05:45.allowing us to listen in on what those options may

:05:46. > :05:48.or may not be. A "murderous, divided city -

:05:49. > :05:50.and the least integrated That's how a VICAR from

:05:51. > :05:53.St Botolph's Church in Boston The comments came to light

:05:54. > :05:57.after a freedom of information request from a member of public,

:05:58. > :06:00.who says he was outraged. The vicar - Reverend Alyson Buxton -

:06:01. > :06:03.has been defended by her diocese, who says she and her team work hard

:06:04. > :06:06.to celebrate and serve Buxton showing the Princess

:06:07. > :06:11.Royal around Boston But an e-mail about the Princess

:06:12. > :06:14.agreeing to continue her role as the Restoration Trust's

:06:15. > :06:17.patron has shocked a member of contacts I did say we were the most

:06:18. > :06:27.murderous and least integrated in the UK

:06:28. > :06:30.and needed her gravitas, support, I could not believe my

:06:31. > :06:35.eyes when I saw that. The e-mail was discovered

:06:36. > :06:40.by Andrew Hoyle in response to a freedom

:06:41. > :06:51.of information request. This sort of rash

:06:52. > :06:53.accusation that Boston is a murderous nonintegrated town could

:06:54. > :06:56.do a lot of damage in the country But Reverend Buxton could've been

:06:57. > :07:02.referring to newspaper So what do people in

:07:03. > :07:06.the town think about her Over the years it has been borne out

:07:07. > :07:19.that we are, with murders and trouble we have had

:07:20. > :07:22.over the last ten years. I have never had such

:07:23. > :07:26.rubbish in my life. If you go to other

:07:27. > :07:30.towns things happen. When I used to live in Derbyshire

:07:31. > :07:33.we had murders occasionly. But I don't think it's

:07:34. > :07:35.the most murderous town. In a statement the Diocese

:07:36. > :07:37.of Lincoln says, of Boston was making a serious point

:07:38. > :07:41.when pointing to the fact that Boston had already received much

:07:42. > :07:44.negative media attention for some However there is a long

:07:45. > :07:52.association between the Princess Royal and Boston

:07:53. > :07:54.and a good understanding of issues facing the town and the parish

:07:55. > :07:56.is vitally I've never really taken a great

:07:57. > :08:05.deal of note about what people write in e-mails

:08:06. > :08:07.because the normal population of the town

:08:08. > :08:09.Boston are proud of the Rector and proud

:08:10. > :08:14.of the town and know they are

:08:15. > :08:17.But Andrew is concerned about the impact

:08:18. > :08:19.that Reverend Buxton's e-mail could have.

:08:20. > :08:21.And he's worried that a negative image of Boston has been

:08:22. > :08:24.We'd like to hear your thoughts on this one.

:08:25. > :08:27.Do you think it's unfair for the vicar to face criticism

:08:28. > :08:31.Do you think the words "murderous and least integrated" should have

:08:32. > :08:33.ever been used in correspondence with the Royal Family -

:08:34. > :09:05.Five people have been injured after an ambulance responding

:09:06. > :09:08.to an emergency call was involved in a crash with two cars. The

:09:09. > :09:12.ambulance had its blue lights on when the crash happened,

:09:13. > :09:14.on the A607 at Waddington - at about one O'clock this

:09:15. > :09:18.Our reporter Jill Archbold is live for us now.

:09:19. > :09:31.The A607 has been closed following a serious collision

:09:32. > :09:39.at Waddington with the junction of Vanwall Road.

:09:40. > :09:55.The ambulance was answering 909 call. And was travelling south to

:09:56. > :10:00.the village when it had a collision of two other cars. Four people were

:10:01. > :10:04.taken to the hospital for their injuries and one person predicted

:10:05. > :10:05.the Queens medical Centre in Nottingham at what was described as

:10:06. > :10:08.serious injuries. Four people including the two crew

:10:09. > :10:11.from the Ambulance have been taken A passenger from one of the other

:10:12. > :10:15.vehicles has been taken to the Queens Medical Centre

:10:16. > :10:30.with serious injuries. One of the ambulances was travelling

:10:31. > :10:35.right. When it had a collision. The ambulance was travelling right. If

:10:36. > :10:41.anybody has seen the incident please Collison Silicon find out what

:10:42. > :10:45.happened. This evening the East Midlands Ambulance Service has said

:10:46. > :10:49.it will support the investigation by the police in any way you can. But

:10:50. > :10:54.there has been some good news the last hour and a Lincolnshire Police

:10:55. > :10:59.say that the people involved have not got a serious injuries as was

:11:00. > :11:04.first thought. -- as serious injuries.

:11:05. > :11:06.More than ?100,000 could be spent on a machine

:11:07. > :11:09.to remove chewing gum from the new pavements in Hull.

:11:10. > :11:11.The Hull Daily Mail reports that several methods to get rid

:11:12. > :11:14.of the gum are being trialled by the City Council.

:11:15. > :11:16.Millions of pounds have spent repaving Hull

:11:17. > :11:19.for its culture celebrations - but already it's dotted with gum.

:11:20. > :11:23.They've spent millions on trying to make Hull City centre more

:11:24. > :11:25.attractive with new paving and street furniture.

:11:26. > :11:30.But efforts are being blighted by an old problem - chewing gum.

:11:31. > :11:33.Look down and you'll see sticky white and grey splodges dotted

:11:34. > :11:47.I can't believe we have spent all that money and it's like that.

:11:48. > :11:50.It spoils all the good work that everybody has put into it,

:11:51. > :11:56.There are bins close by, rather than spitting it on the floor,

:11:57. > :12:02.To see how bad the problem is I'm going to do a very unscientific

:12:03. > :12:05.scout around and count the number of chewing gum pieces on the ground

:12:06. > :12:16.As I said, not a scientific approach but I've literally walked around

:12:17. > :12:21.for two minutes and found nearly 100 pieces of chewing gum on the ground

:12:22. > :12:26.And what about the cost of clearing it up?

:12:27. > :12:30.The regeneration of the city centre is costing ?25 million.

:12:31. > :12:34.The average price of a piece of gum is 3p.

:12:35. > :12:39.But every time it ends up on the floor it costs around ?1.50,

:12:40. > :12:45.Normal street cleaning doesn't shift it.

:12:46. > :12:49.So Hull City Council is trialling new machines in the hope

:12:50. > :13:06.A small machine like this one, specifically for gum

:13:07. > :13:10.But one, like this, which will steam clean much larger

:13:11. > :13:14.The council is able to issue ?80 on the spot fines

:13:15. > :13:17.And there's always what Singapore did in the 1990s.

:13:18. > :13:27.And in a statement, Hull City Council said while it's

:13:28. > :13:30.trialling these machines to get rid of gum, it's reiterating its plea

:13:31. > :13:33.to people not to drop it at all - asking them to "take pride

:13:34. > :13:37.Another one I'm sure you'll have an opinion on.

:13:38. > :13:41.Do you think the council should be spending money on this new machine?

:13:42. > :13:45.What do you think when you walk around Hull and see all this chewing

:13:46. > :14:01.Many manufacturers have a part to play with biodegradable gum. -- may

:14:02. > :14:11.be manufacturers. Still ahead on the programme

:14:12. > :14:19.Skegness hits back as it is label what the North Korea -- as it is

:14:20. > :14:22.labelled worse than North Korea in a travel guide.

:14:23. > :14:24.This picture of Boynton village near Bridlington

:14:25. > :14:35.Several e-mails a day telling me that yesterday you were seen eating

:14:36. > :14:40.fish and chips in the sunshine and Bedlington, allegedly working but

:14:41. > :14:47.that does not appear to be. Take that smug look off your face. I was

:14:48. > :14:52.working very hard and the usual questions from everybody. Where is

:14:53. > :15:03.your mates? Reply as it hears no mate of mine. -- he has no mate of

:15:04. > :15:07.mine. It is bitterly cold. The coldest day of winter so far with

:15:08. > :15:15.biting south east winds and there might even be at lead very light

:15:16. > :15:19.slow follies. -- a few very light slow laddies. Into the weekend we

:15:20. > :15:33.get near normal temperatures are back. -- a few light snow flurries.

:15:34. > :15:39.It is pretty grim across Lincolnshire and Northbrook. Skies

:15:40. > :15:43.to the north and largely clear. This cloud will push northwards to the

:15:44. > :15:51.next few hours and envelop all of us with Mr Ness and fog at lower

:15:52. > :15:59.levels. There will be ice. -- envelops all with Mr. Despite all of

:16:00. > :16:07.the cloud 02 minus two Celsius. -- mist. The sun will rise at eight

:16:08. > :16:12.o'clock and the next high water time in Cleethorpes at 41 minutes past

:16:13. > :16:17.four in the morning. Grey and depressing tomorrow with leaden

:16:18. > :16:22.skies. With that cloud the maybe some light snow and the odd spot of

:16:23. > :16:26.drizzle. I can't see there being any brightness at all. You will really

:16:27. > :16:33.notice that south-easterly breeze brings a significant wind chill to

:16:34. > :16:45.come. Top afternoon temperatures are one Celsius for Harle and Grimsby

:16:46. > :16:52.and zero for the West. -- Hull. Looking into Friday it looks dull

:16:53. > :16:55.but a little less cold for the end of the week. Saturday looks dry with

:16:56. > :17:12.some sunshine. I want to do more. Labour MPs from East Yorkshire

:17:13. > :17:14.and Lincolnshire say they WON'T try to stop Britain

:17:15. > :17:16.leaving the EU. It comes on the day

:17:17. > :17:18.the Prime Minister pledged to set-out the government's plans

:17:19. > :17:21.for Brexit in a formal document - All the Labour MPs in our area say

:17:22. > :17:26.they WILL back Brexit when it comes to a vote in parliament -

:17:27. > :17:28.subject to certain guarantees - such as the protection

:17:29. > :17:30.of workers' rights. More from our Political

:17:31. > :17:32.Editor Tim Iredale. Will British workers

:17:33. > :17:34.will enjoy the same rights That question has played a big part

:17:35. > :17:39.in the debate over Brexit. The Government says workers

:17:40. > :17:49.will be protected - Talking down my friend the member

:17:50. > :17:54.for Grimsby 's bill to protect European workers' rights that have

:17:55. > :17:58.been obtained in this country is the real agenda of the Tory party.

:17:59. > :18:00.That's a reference to a bill proposed by the Great Grimsby MP

:18:01. > :18:03.Melanie Onn who wants ensure things like paid maternity leave

:18:04. > :18:05.and protection for agency and part-time workers are guaranteed

:18:06. > :18:09.Here's what voters in her constituency have

:18:10. > :18:31.I am not really thinking they will all disappear. I was all for leaving

:18:32. > :18:39.the EU. I'm actually a director. Actually I am for fool Brexit. --

:18:40. > :18:41.full Brexit. All five Labour MPs in our

:18:42. > :18:44.area say they will vote to trigger Article 50 -

:18:45. > :18:46.that's the mechanism that will formally lead

:18:47. > :18:48.to Britain leaving the EU. But they want certain guarantees

:18:49. > :18:56.from the Government. I will be pressing the Government to

:18:57. > :18:57.get the very best deal possible for my constituents.

:18:58. > :18:59.Conservatives say there's no question of British workers

:19:00. > :19:13.We are increasing people's wages they have more money in the pocket

:19:14. > :19:14.and what we need to do is to not have the Labour Party playing

:19:15. > :19:16.politics with this. The highest court in the land -

:19:17. > :19:19.the Supreme Court - has said parliament must rubber

:19:20. > :19:21.stamp the result of last year's referendum, but none

:19:22. > :19:24.of our MPs look set to vote And Tim is live at

:19:25. > :19:29.Westminster tonight. Are you surprised that

:19:30. > :19:32.all our Labour MPs say they'll vote in favour of Brexit,

:19:33. > :19:43.given the fact that all of them You only have to look at the

:19:44. > :19:48.breakdown of results in the EU referendum. 66% of people in

:19:49. > :20:02.Scunthorpe, a Labour voting area, voted for Brexit and 67% in Harle

:20:03. > :20:06.and 70% in Grimsby. -- Hull. I think it would be a huge error of judgment

:20:07. > :20:12.for any Labour MP to defy the will of their constituents and it seems

:20:13. > :20:16.all MPs from all sizeable boat in favour of Brexit when it comes to a

:20:17. > :20:19.crucial vote on Brexit and House of Commons in a couple of weeks' time

:20:20. > :20:23.and that will help Theresa May go to the rest of Europe with a clear

:20:24. > :20:30.mandate and finally say to them that we are out.

:20:31. > :20:33.We've had a big response to our story about Martin Hill, the leader

:20:34. > :20:35.of Lincolnshire County Council, who wants to hold a referendum

:20:36. > :20:38.to scrap seven district councils - and replace them with a unitary

:20:39. > :20:42.authority for the whole area.Brian says: "The County Council has been

:20:43. > :20:45.promising to repair footpaths in our area for over

:20:46. > :20:55.What would they do to the rest of the county if they were in

:20:56. > :20:58.This from Karen: "Why don't we get rid of Lincolnshire

:20:59. > :21:05.County Council and give powers to local councils?

:21:06. > :21:11.It could reduce taxes, increase wages for council workers,

:21:12. > :21:22.We will return to it again in a few weeks' time.

:21:23. > :21:25.The Hull City coach says he and his entire team will visit

:21:26. > :21:28.Ryan Mason in hospital in London at the weekend as the player

:21:29. > :21:30.continues his recovery from a fractured skull.

:21:31. > :21:33.The midfielder was injured during the game against Chelsea on Sunday.

:21:34. > :21:37.Ahead of their EFL Cup semifinal match with Manchester United,

:21:38. > :21:41.Head Coach Marco Silva refused to be drawn on weather Burnley had

:21:42. > :21:44.bid ?10 million for Robert Snodgrass.

:21:45. > :21:49.He said the team was focusing on other things:

:21:50. > :21:52.At this moment, the most important we need to support the player,

:21:53. > :21:54.support his family is the most important at this moment.

:21:55. > :21:58.Of course, it is not an easy moment for us, like a team but you need to

:21:59. > :22:10.be strong, to be together and to keep together all the players and

:22:11. > :22:20.support Ryan is the most important at this moment.

:22:21. > :22:22.People in Skegness have reacted angrily to national

:22:23. > :22:24.newspaper coverage linking the seaside resort

:22:25. > :22:27.to North Korea and Syria on a list of the world's WORST

:22:28. > :22:30.It refers to an article written by holiday website,

:22:31. > :22:32.Destination Tips, which describes the town as "a pile of dirt".

:22:33. > :22:35.Those living there have cold it an out of date

:22:36. > :22:47.Improvements are under way in Skegness but they won't come quickly

:22:48. > :22:51.enough to impress one website. That is because Skegness has been listed

:22:52. > :22:56.as one of the worst holiday destinations in the world. But what

:22:57. > :22:59.is particularly stinging is that it has been listed amongst places in

:23:00. > :23:04.countries accused of systematic human rights abuses and others which

:23:05. > :23:10.are war zones and currently experiencing a humanitarian crisis.
