:00:16. > :00:17.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North.

:00:18. > :00:35.East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire MPs say they're ready

:00:36. > :00:40.to fight a general election, that's taken many by surprise.

:00:41. > :00:43.I don't think the opposition is as strong as it could be.

:00:44. > :00:46.But West Hull's Labour MP, Alan Johnson, who was once

:00:47. > :00:48.the Home Secretary says he's standing down.

:00:49. > :00:50.Testing for a disease which has seen a quarter

:00:51. > :00:53.of a million cattle culled - now there are fears TB could affect

:00:54. > :00:57.Lincoln City on the brink of getting back in the league -

:00:58. > :01:07.I have just been handed smaller daffodils because this goes right

:01:08. > :01:10.round the block and back. And why hundreds of people queued

:01:11. > :01:15.to pick daffodils made of Lego. Join me for the broadcast. --

:01:16. > :01:22.forecast. Theresa May's decision to call

:01:23. > :01:25.a snap general election has prompted one of our most high profile MPs

:01:26. > :01:28.to call time on his Alan Johnson - who's represented

:01:29. > :01:36.Hull West and Hessle for 20 years - says he's stepping down to "do other

:01:37. > :01:40.things with his life". And East Yorkshire and

:01:41. > :01:42.Lincolnshire's politicians from all sides say they're ready

:01:43. > :01:45.to fight the election which will We'll be hearing from Alan Johnson

:01:46. > :01:49.in a moment but first our Political Editor Tim Iredale

:01:50. > :01:51.is in his constituency tonight. Was Mr Johnson's decision

:01:52. > :02:05.to step down a surprise? No one goes on for ever, that is a

:02:06. > :02:11.point made by Alan Johnson in a letter to local Labour Party members

:02:12. > :02:15.today. He said he was faced with a choice of stepping down our Carling

:02:16. > :02:19.until the next potential election in 2022 when he will be into his 70s so

:02:20. > :02:23.it means that one of the most popular figures at Westminster is

:02:24. > :02:29.leaving the political stage. But that is just what happens. New

:02:30. > :02:33.faces, and old faces go. That is the nature of elections.

:02:34. > :02:35.He's the former postman who stamped his authority on some

:02:36. > :02:37.of the biggest jobs in politics, including education,

:02:38. > :02:41.But today Alan Johnson's constituents in Hessle were reacting

:02:42. > :02:43.to the news that the man who's represented them in Parliament

:02:44. > :02:55.I think he has got a lot of integrity and experience I think

:02:56. > :03:01.it's been good for the area. Hopefully he will take this place

:03:02. > :03:10.will do just as good a job. -- awfully who takes his place. He has

:03:11. > :03:12.always been there. He has a hard act to follow.

:03:13. > :03:14.Theresa May's decision to seek a snap general election came

:03:15. > :03:21.And opinion is divided on whether it s the right thing to do.

:03:22. > :03:27.This feels like a Prime Minister who was not in control and has no

:03:28. > :03:30.security on positions on Brexit in particular and why she has taken as

:03:31. > :03:34.drastic decision to put the country into a period of flats again. I

:03:35. > :03:38.think having a Government that has a five-year mandate to dig through

:03:39. > :03:41.negotiations and a new global agreements after these included is

:03:42. > :03:43.good for our region and provides stability we absolutely required.

:03:44. > :03:46.Out of the 17 constituencies in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire -

:03:47. > :03:49.12 are held by the Conservatives and five are held by Labour.

:03:50. > :03:56.Lincoln traditionally sees a closely fought battle battle

:03:57. > :04:01.And many eyes will on Boston and Skegness - an area which saw

:04:02. > :04:06.the highest vote in favour of leaving the EU.

:04:07. > :04:21.The people of Hull voted massively in the 2014 elections and in the

:04:22. > :04:27.referendum. We have a strong following there and in Great Grimsby

:04:28. > :04:31.and other Labour areas. The Liberal Democrats are stronger than we've

:04:32. > :04:35.ever been. I party membership has doubled. This dereliction is

:04:36. > :04:41.happening now because there's such a weak and divided Labour opposition.

:04:42. > :04:43.Before any general election election can take place -

:04:44. > :04:48.two thirds of MPs must support Theresa May's proposal.

:04:49. > :04:54.The fixed term Parliaments act was passed in 2011 so the 2050 election

:04:55. > :04:59.was the first under the provision of the act and other its provision in

:05:00. > :05:09.the next election was scheduled for 2020. -- the 2015 election. There

:05:10. > :05:10.will be an election on the 8th of June.

:05:11. > :05:12.So the date is almost set for the second general election

:05:13. > :05:16.With parts of Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire becoming key

:05:17. > :05:28.It sounds like most MPs any Yorkshire and Lancashire were back

:05:29. > :05:32.Theresa May and support an election when it comes the House of Commons

:05:33. > :05:35.for tomorrow. But a lot of the political parties across our area

:05:36. > :05:39.have even selected candidates to stand in the selection because they

:05:40. > :05:42.didn't think would be placed in 2020 so that will be a bit of a

:05:43. > :05:45.last-minute scramble taking place to get those crucial names on the

:05:46. > :05:49.ballot papers. It sounds like Theresa May is as announcement today

:05:50. > :05:54.has got everyone by surprise but maybe that was a intention.

:05:55. > :05:58.I'm joined form Westminster by Alan Johnson.

:05:59. > :06:07.A lot of your supporters will be gutted tonight. Have you had enough?

:06:08. > :06:11.Tim talked about old faces blown a new faces coming. Nothing goes on

:06:12. > :06:24.forever and it's been an absolute pleasure and privilege to represent

:06:25. > :06:31.Hull West and hassle for 20 years. -- Hessle. It surprised everyone but

:06:32. > :06:38.it meant that I had to make the decision. I feel sorry for my staff.

:06:39. > :06:46.It means they lose their job as well. But you can't go on forever

:06:47. > :06:53.and I'm coming up 67 and I don't want to it on to my 70s, pleasure

:06:54. > :06:56.though it is to be talking to you. Watching Labour getting so well

:06:57. > :07:00.beaten in 2015 I remember the look on your face. Could you not pay to

:07:01. > :07:11.watch that again in seven weeks' time? We won handsomely in Hull an

:07:12. > :07:15.three Hull had incredible left in the majorities. In politics and

:07:16. > :07:19.democracy governments change. We were in power for 13 years and I had

:07:20. > :07:26.11 years as a Government minister which was great. That is behind me

:07:27. > :07:29.now. The people decide in a democracy and I hope they decide to

:07:30. > :07:37.back Labour who are doing great things in Hull. Just talking

:07:38. > :07:41.generally, labour are 20 points behind at the polls and has not been

:07:42. > :07:44.this bad since the 80s. Do think it could be turned around or is that

:07:45. > :07:51.pure fantasy with the leader like this? And can be turned around and I

:07:52. > :07:56.think for Theresa May there is an issue here. Integrity. She said just

:07:57. > :07:59.a few weeks ago it might be in my entries to go to the country but it

:08:00. > :08:04.would be in the interest of the country. She actually said that and

:08:05. > :08:08.we had a general election 2015 and we had the EU referendum in 2016 and

:08:09. > :08:13.I putting this to a general election three years before one was due, I

:08:14. > :08:16.think she might pay a price for that, actually. I would not be

:08:17. > :08:20.surprised if she paid the price for that because it is reminiscent of

:08:21. > :08:30.Gordon Brown. He suffered a terrible blow by not keeping that integrity

:08:31. > :08:36.of what he told the voters. Apart from talking to me, what will you

:08:37. > :08:46.not to mess about being an MP? -- mess. Nothing at all. I loved the

:08:47. > :08:49.constituency surgeries and it was a privilege for being let into

:08:50. > :08:55.people's lives to help resolve the problems. I can't actually think of

:08:56. > :08:59.a single thing. It's a great job and I enjoy doing it. I'm sure we will

:09:00. > :09:03.have a celebration knew the time. Very good to talk to you tonight. --

:09:04. > :09:06.neither the time. Let us know what you think

:09:07. > :09:08.about having a General Election What's the main issue on your mind

:09:09. > :09:14.as the campaigning begins. Is the Conservative lead

:09:15. > :09:30.in the polls unassailable or can Do we need the election? Maybe

:09:31. > :09:35.you'll change your mind is on Brexit since the summer. We will have some

:09:36. > :09:46.tweets for you and your meals before we finish. -- e-mails. We will have

:09:47. > :09:49.more on the story it had past ten on the second programme. I will be

:09:50. > :09:58.talking to the wayward MP Diana Johnson. -- Labour MP Diana Johnson.

:09:59. > :10:00.Hull could soon see fewer people collecting for charity

:10:01. > :10:03.The City Council may soon require so-called "chuggers"

:10:04. > :10:05.to apply for a temporary licence, which would be restricted

:10:06. > :10:09.In practice it would make it much harder for charities to stop

:10:10. > :10:15.This is like the equivalent of a phone call, a cold

:10:16. > :10:20.Another thing that people necessarily one that when they are

:10:21. > :10:23.trying to enjoy the city centre with all the great improvements we've

:10:24. > :10:33.A man has died in a crash on the A46 in Lincolnshire.

:10:34. > :10:35.It happened last night at Osgodby near Market Rasen.

:10:36. > :10:38.The driver, from the Cleethorpes area, died at the scene.

:10:39. > :10:42.A female passenger was taken to hospital for treatment.

:10:43. > :11:02.The last minute goal giving a fans hope and why hundreds of people

:11:03. > :11:06.queued to get Lego daffodils. -- giving Lincoln fans hope.

:11:07. > :11:30.Stephen took this picture of Saltend. Their is a beautiful golf

:11:31. > :11:36.course and quite widely lower the tone by allowing caravans and is

:11:37. > :11:41.quite beyond me. Just do what she came in to do. You were lost for

:11:42. > :11:47.words that. I should do that more often, celebrate. It is not looking

:11:48. > :11:53.too bad for the next 24 hours. It is very quiet and will be some sunshine

:11:54. > :11:56.particularly across Lincolnshire are gradually close was Berlin from the

:11:57. > :11:59.North West. The satellite is not really picking the cloud up but

:12:00. > :12:07.gradually it is going to edge down south over the next 24 hours. That's

:12:08. > :12:11.the outlook for Friday. It should be of interest to gardeners because

:12:12. > :12:14.after a milder interlude on Friday this cold front will introduce

:12:15. > :12:19.colder there for Friday the weekend and could be a touch of frost on the

:12:20. > :12:23.cards. Right now it is fine and I think that cloud will filter into

:12:24. > :12:28.East Yorkshire down through Lincolnshire but it is fairly

:12:29. > :12:36.tenuous staff so that is the chance of touch of ground frost. Maybe one

:12:37. > :12:41.or 2 degrees and in sheltered localities three of 4 degrees. The

:12:42. > :12:44.highest high water time in Britain will be 42 minutes past ten and the

:12:45. > :12:49.morrow. Some sunshine in Lincolnshire and almost they might

:12:50. > :12:52.always more cloud in East Yorkshire which gradually thickens from the

:12:53. > :12:57.North West but apart from the odd spot of drizzle it is dry. The

:12:58. > :13:01.brightest spot of all will be crossed Northolt and side ligature

:13:02. > :13:05.into eastern parts of ligature. Top temperatures into double figures and

:13:06. > :13:09.perhaps as high as 11 or 12 when we get decent breaks in the cloud.

:13:10. > :13:15.Again a special across South Lincolnshire. Gardeners and farmers

:13:16. > :13:21.would like the dry outlook and Thursday and Friday milder and quite

:13:22. > :13:25.dry and then Friday not too bad until the cold front slips in

:13:26. > :13:36.inducing colder air for next weekend. Then there's the chance a

:13:37. > :13:37.touch of frost. If you do have a caravan, the complaints go to Paul

:13:38. > :14:01.Hudson. See you tomorrow. It brings over ?4 million

:14:02. > :14:04.into the county every year - and the Lincolnshire Show looks set

:14:05. > :14:07.to be just as successful once again. That's despite a disease among

:14:08. > :14:09.cattle which has caused almost a quarter of a million of them

:14:10. > :14:12.to be culled. Bovine Tuberculosis has

:14:13. > :14:13.hit the industry hard, but exhibitors say they'll still be

:14:14. > :14:16.coming to the Lincolnshire Our Rural Affairs Correspondent

:14:17. > :14:19.Linsey Smith has more. For almost 150 years

:14:20. > :14:21.the Lincolnshire Show has been A shop window for breeders

:14:22. > :14:26.and farmers to sell their pedigrees But there has been concern

:14:27. > :14:30.about its future after other shows, including nearby

:14:31. > :14:31.Nottinghamshire County Show, was shunned by exhibitors

:14:32. > :14:33.because of strict rules about testing show cattle

:14:34. > :14:36.for Bovine Tuberculosis. We're not seeing

:14:37. > :14:38.a reduction at the moment. I mean, entries are in as we speak

:14:39. > :14:41.and we are actually But the indications are there

:14:42. > :14:48.won't be any reductions. Bovine Tuberculosis

:14:49. > :14:50.is a contagious disease in cattle. Almost 250,000 animals have been

:14:51. > :14:54.culled after testing positive. Cattle are more at risk

:14:55. > :14:59.in the South West and Midlands, which means fewer farmers

:15:00. > :15:02.are willing to take their cattle It's partly because of expensive

:15:03. > :15:09.tests farmers have to carry out on their animals when moving

:15:10. > :15:16.them to shows. But because Lincolnshire's in a low

:15:17. > :15:18.risk area most farmers only have to test before a show rather

:15:19. > :15:25.than before and after. It's an unnecessary worry,

:15:26. > :15:27.according to Michael Read. It is now almost 100% certain

:15:28. > :15:33.there won't be any TB Definitely not, otherwise

:15:34. > :15:37.we wouldn't be showing. We have got to be out

:15:38. > :15:40.and about showing our stock, I think the Lincolnshire Show this

:15:41. > :15:48.year is the 52nd I've been Organisers had planned other

:15:49. > :15:56.displays, including a mini knights' trail should

:15:57. > :15:57.entries not materialise. But, so far, it appears the main

:15:58. > :16:01.ring will be bustling as always. Linsey Smith, BBC Look North,

:16:02. > :16:19.Lincolnshire Showground. If you have a story you think we

:16:20. > :16:23.should know about drop us an e-mail. Tell a soul about it and give us a

:16:24. > :16:30.phone number and get it on the telephone. -- tell us all about it.

:16:31. > :16:32.They've been a non-league club for the past six seasons

:16:33. > :16:34.but on Saturday Lincoln City could reclaim their place

:16:35. > :16:38.That's after a dramatic comeback which saw the Imps win their latest

:16:39. > :16:41.match at Gateshead with virtually the last kick of the game.

:16:42. > :16:44.Our sports reporter Simon Clark was there and he's been looking

:16:45. > :16:59.at what they have to do now to win on Saturday.

:17:00. > :17:02.It's been one joyful match after another for this lot.

:17:03. > :17:04.These Lincoln fans leaving Gateshead were full of happiness, in stark

:17:05. > :17:21.contrast to how they were feeling just five minutes earlier.

:17:22. > :17:23.That's because the Imps were reeling from this

:17:24. > :17:27.But as the game reached its conclusion another penalty, calmly

:17:28. > :17:30.Then as full-time was about you, the sublime

:17:31. > :17:33.finish but the unexpected victory and the Imps to the verge of

:17:34. > :17:38.FA Cup, FA Trophy, league, everything.

:17:39. > :17:42.It's a home game next Saturday, we are going to do it.

:17:43. > :17:48.So the fans are ready for one more push at this promotion

:17:49. > :17:52.lark but the manager admitted the team have

:17:53. > :17:56.I think we've played 11 in 33 or 34 days, and

:17:57. > :18:00.were playing against a team that played six.

:18:01. > :18:03.Physically we were under today and when you can't get the levels

:18:04. > :18:06.physically you have to be mentally really tough.

:18:07. > :18:08.And this leading academic says evidence suggests a

:18:09. > :18:11.When we experience those kind of positive,

:18:12. > :18:14.We experience positive emotions and then when

:18:15. > :18:15.they undertake tasks like

:18:16. > :18:18.going into the next training session, even if the physical

:18:19. > :18:21.activity they are doing might be of the same intensity it'll feel

:18:22. > :18:31.And that's reflected by one of the Imps' former players.

:18:32. > :18:33.I don't think they feel any pressure.

:18:34. > :18:35.I have had pressure at the bottom and at the

:18:36. > :18:42.So just when for these fans from Saturday's sell-out game

:18:43. > :18:50.North Ferriby United were relegated from the National

:18:51. > :18:52.league after defeat against Barrow.In League One,

:18:53. > :18:54.Scunthorpe United secured their place in the play-offs

:18:55. > :18:56.following a victory against Chesterfield.

:18:57. > :18:58.But Grimsby Town lost at Cheltenham in Russell Slade's

:18:59. > :19:17.Hull FC beat Leigh by 24 points to ten.

:19:18. > :19:19.These were the queues in Hull City Centre this lunchtime

:19:20. > :19:21.as hundreds of people stood for hours waiting

:19:22. > :19:26.The Lego daffodils have only been there for a week but today they went

:19:27. > :19:28.on sale to the public to raise money for two charities.

:19:29. > :19:33.Our culture correspondent Anne-Marie Tasker has more.

:19:34. > :19:35.They've been attracting quite a crowd: more than 80,000 bricks

:19:36. > :19:37.transformed into a host of spring daffodils.

:19:38. > :19:39.And today the rush began to take one home -

:19:40. > :19:58.I didn't want to miss them. I really like Lego. When the daffodils were

:19:59. > :20:02.put into the centre of the city everyone knew they would be popular

:20:03. > :20:05.but nobody knew they would be less popular. There have been hundreds of

:20:06. > :20:06.people queueing for more than three hours hoping to get their hands on

:20:07. > :20:08.one. And the queue grew and grew -

:20:09. > :20:27.and before long, there Something from the City of Culture

:20:28. > :20:29.to take on. It will be nice to add to the decoration my bedroom.

:20:30. > :20:41.This queue goes right round the building and doubles back. Levitt is

:20:42. > :20:48.going to the Lord Mayors charities. How long have you been queueing for?

:20:49. > :20:55.Three hours. Was it worth it? Yes. My feet are taking. -- are aching.

:20:56. > :20:57.And for new Mum Ruth Hayward it was yet another City

:20:58. > :21:00.of Culture experience - already having her baby's footprints

:21:01. > :21:09.This is technically his third City of Culture will experience.

:21:10. > :21:12.It took six builders a month to construct the daffodils -

:21:13. > :21:15.but by a quarter to four, they'd all gone - but we still don't

:21:16. > :21:20.know who got to take home the Lego watering can.

:21:21. > :21:27.Did you get the bottling plant? If so let us know. The main story

:21:28. > :21:35.tonight is that the Prime Minister calls a general election for June.

:21:36. > :21:41.MPC say that they are ready but there Hull Labour MP Alan Johnson

:21:42. > :21:45.stepping down. Tomorrow is driver clouding over in the afternoon but

:21:46. > :21:57.Russell and top temperatures are 11 degrees.

:21:58. > :22:04.-- Linda says maybe it is that unwelcome surprise but unless you go

:22:05. > :22:07.to Brexit negotiations with the lid of the strong mandate they will make

:22:08. > :22:15.mincemeat of us and we will all suffer. Irene and Spalding says I

:22:16. > :22:20.sincerely hope people vote for Ukip in the next election so we can

:22:21. > :22:25.really get on Brexit. Alan says with an Lincolnshire it is down to

:22:26. > :22:31.immigration and Brexit. I believe. Barry says my opinion is that Jeremy

:22:32. > :22:38.Corbyn will resign and be replaced by David Miliband as Labour leader

:22:39. > :22:41.by the weekend. On the subject of Alan Johnson standing down, another

:22:42. > :22:47.Barry says with Alan Johnson resigning let's hope the Labour

:22:48. > :22:51.Party a point at a local person as opposed to importing a lousy

:22:52. > :22:55.candidate. More on the subject of the election locally and there will

:22:56. > :23:02.be talking to Diana Johnson later on in the programme.
