:00:24. > :00:25.Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North.

:00:26. > :00:32.Lincolnshire MP Nick Boles who has cancer says he will stand.

:00:33. > :00:33.German engineering giant Siemens commits to Lincoln

:00:34. > :00:38.The Hull man with depression gets a boost from Princes William

:00:39. > :00:41.and Harry, as he prepares for the London Marathon.

:00:42. > :00:44.As a nation we needed to grip this because talking about mental health

:00:45. > :00:47.He was genuinely open, honest and knowledgeable,

:00:48. > :00:50.and wanted to learn more from us as well.

:00:51. > :00:52.The mystery of Brenda Simpson's Christmas cards that finally arrived

:00:53. > :01:09.For endangered hedgehogs in an East Yorkshire village. A new home. The

:01:10. > :01:14.weather forecast follows in 15 minutes.

:01:15. > :01:18.A Lincolnshire MP who was diagnosed with cancer says he WILL stand again

:01:19. > :01:21.Nick Boles - who represents Grantham and Stamford for the Conservatives -

:01:22. > :01:24.says he's completed his treatment for the disease and is expected

:01:25. > :01:32.Today MPs backed the Prime Minister's call for a snap

:01:33. > :01:36.That means thousands of local activists can begin

:01:37. > :01:38.planning their campaigns over the next seven weeks.

:01:39. > :01:44.More from our Political Editor Tim Iredale.

:01:45. > :01:47.Nick Boles revealed last year that doctors had found

:01:48. > :01:52.In recent weeks he hasn't played an active role in politics,

:01:53. > :01:58.but he did leave hospital to vote in favour of triggering

:01:59. > :02:01.Today he revealed he'd completed his final treatment

:02:02. > :02:03.for non Hodgkin's lymphoma and doctors expect him

:02:04. > :02:06.In a statement he said: "Although my current state of health

:02:07. > :02:09.will prevent me from playing an energetic part in the election

:02:10. > :02:12.campaign, I am confident that if I am re-elected I will be able

:02:13. > :02:15.to resume my duties as Member of Parliament with renewed vigour

:02:16. > :02:25.None of our MPs opposed plans for a snap election when it

:02:26. > :02:29.The only one of our sitting MPs to announce they won t be standing

:02:30. > :02:34.again in Alan Johnson as Labour's candidate in Hull West and Hessle.

:02:35. > :02:38.There is a growing list of names hoping to replace them.

:02:39. > :02:54.And Ukip MEP Mike Hookem - who was famously involved

:02:55. > :02:58.in an altercation says he want sto be party candidate in Grimsby.

:02:59. > :03:06.Amongst our MPs opinion is divided as to whether Brexit will be a

:03:07. > :03:14.dominant issue in the campaign. It is incredibly important for people

:03:15. > :03:18.to be behind that. People will be looking that under a Conservative

:03:19. > :03:24.Government we are seeing cuts to our local schools and our local NHS in

:03:25. > :03:28.crisis. Spare a thought for the thousands of activists working for

:03:29. > :03:33.all the political parties who have been thrust into a political

:03:34. > :03:40.election campaign with no notice. There was not much forewarning. I

:03:41. > :03:45.now have only really a week or so ten days to sort out all the issue

:03:46. > :03:50.around getting an election in hand and under way and the literature

:03:51. > :03:54.prepared and all the volunteers ready to help out and everything

:03:55. > :03:59.else. This is what we can expect of the next few weeks. People knocking

:04:00. > :04:04.on the door and leaflets stuffed through the letterbox from

:04:05. > :04:12.candidates who want our board. -- who want our boat.

:04:13. > :04:14.Earlier I spoke to Victoria Atkins - the Conservative MP

:04:15. > :04:17.for Louth and Horncastle - I asked whether she was surprised

:04:18. > :04:27.I didn't wake up yesterday expecting a general election and was a little

:04:28. > :04:30.bit surprised but we have a ladder chance to think about it and sleep

:04:31. > :04:35.on it and I am really looking forward to the chance. The Prime

:04:36. > :04:40.Minister has said time and again there is no need for an action. Her

:04:41. > :04:44.trust has gone out the window. She has made it clear it was a decision

:04:45. > :04:49.she took very recently and also reluctantly. She thought very

:04:50. > :04:54.carefully about it and if you think back to last summer and the

:04:55. > :04:57.immediate aftermath of the referendum the most important thing

:04:58. > :05:01.was stability for the country. She has achieved that and we have had a

:05:02. > :05:07.rapid economy and having now triggered Article 50 now she feels

:05:08. > :05:14.we need to have this general election to help give her a mandate

:05:15. > :05:22.to into Europe. 17% of East Lindsey voted for Brexit. She has made it

:05:23. > :05:31.about Brexit. -- 70%. You voted to remain. My manifesto promise to

:05:32. > :05:37.those of 15 is that we would hold a referendum and honour the results.

:05:38. > :05:41.-- 2015. I took a different view from people in my constituency but

:05:42. > :05:46.that is the nature of democracy and why we had a referendum were each

:05:47. > :05:49.person's vote counted as much as their neighbours. I'm very clear

:05:50. > :05:52.that now we have had the referendum and the result was clear I am

:05:53. > :05:57.supporting the Government and ensuring that we leave Europe. Do

:05:58. > :06:11.you feel that the people of life and Newcastle want another election. --

:06:12. > :06:17.Louth. I can appreciate that people at this stage may be thinking let's

:06:18. > :06:20.get on with it the job of Government but actually we need to have the

:06:21. > :06:26.selection so that Theresa May has the mandate she needs to do the best

:06:27. > :06:38.possible deal not just for the UK but also for Louth and Newcastle.

:06:39. > :06:43.You have a 15,000 majority. You can put your feet up and take it easy.

:06:44. > :06:46.Certainly not. I worked very hard at the last election and hope my

:06:47. > :06:50.constituents think I have worked hard since then. I'm looking forward

:06:51. > :06:53.to getting out and shaking hands and talking to people on the doorstep

:06:54. > :06:58.and winning the trust and winning the vote.

:06:59. > :07:04.There's been a big response following yesterday's announcement.

:07:05. > :07:06.Anne in Bridlington says: 'Well done Theresa May.

:07:07. > :07:09.It's time that people listened and the country needs to draw

:07:10. > :07:11.together behind you because you have to fight our cause.'

:07:12. > :07:14.But Anthony in Sleaford says 'The general election should have

:07:15. > :07:16.been called the day Theresa May took over as PM.

:07:17. > :07:19.She was not voted in by the public and has been running,

:07:20. > :07:21.or trying to run, our country without our votes.'

:07:22. > :07:24.But Gale in Scunthorpe says 'I have never voted Conservative

:07:25. > :07:26.in my life but I will definitely be voting for Theresa May.

:07:27. > :07:29.While Jeremy Corbyn is leader of the Labour Party I will not

:07:30. > :07:35.And you can still get in touch about this one.

:07:36. > :07:38.Perhaps you agree with Gale there and have voted one way

:07:39. > :07:43.all your life but will be changing your mind this time?

:07:44. > :07:46.Are you certain of how you will vote or will the campaign

:07:47. > :08:02.Is this an election about Brexit - or is it

:08:03. > :08:31.In our second look North tonight I will be talking to the Brig and

:08:32. > :08:34.Goole MP. The German engineering giant Siemens

:08:35. > :08:37.says it will spend ? 35 million relocating more of its gas turbine

:08:38. > :08:39.operations to a business The company is expanding its site

:08:40. > :08:43.on Teal Park in what it calls a positive step for the company

:08:44. > :08:46.in the city. Our business correspondent

:08:47. > :08:48.Leanne Brown is here - Well there has been lots of talk

:08:49. > :08:56.about the impact the Brexit vote might have on Siemens in the UK -

:08:57. > :08:59.but this is a sign of their confidence

:09:00. > :09:01.and commitment to the county. The company is one of the largest

:09:02. > :09:03.private employers in Lincoln, manufacture and service a range

:09:04. > :09:08.of industrial gas turbines - in simple terms they're basically

:09:09. > :09:16.engine's that generate power. Of course those parts need servicing

:09:17. > :09:28.- so with this extra investment Service Centre - that will be

:09:29. > :09:32.based at their current They're relocating a storage

:09:33. > :09:37.facility they have in Freeman Road there -

:09:38. > :09:39.so everything is in one place. Building work is set to begin

:09:40. > :09:42.as early as next month and it's hoped to be completed

:09:43. > :09:45.by spring next year - Humberside Police want help to find

:09:46. > :09:52.a missing teenager from Hull. 15-year-old Ben-Anthony

:09:53. > :09:54.Edmonds hasn't been seen since leaving his home

:09:55. > :09:57.on Sunday afternoon. Police say they're worried

:09:58. > :09:59.because of his age and are asking anyone with information

:10:00. > :10:05.to come forward. A woman is in critical

:10:06. > :10:07.but stable condition in hospital following a fire

:10:08. > :10:09.at a bungalow in Skegness. It happened at Finisterre

:10:10. > :10:12.Avenue this morning. Mental health has been in the news

:10:13. > :10:15.this week with Prince William and Prince Harry opening up

:10:16. > :10:17.about their experiences following the death of their mother

:10:18. > :10:20.Princess Diana in a car Paul Plowman from Hull is one

:10:21. > :10:24.of a group of runners - all with mental health issues -

:10:25. > :10:26.who have met, and been supported by, the two Princes

:10:27. > :10:29.as they prepare to take It's part of a documentary

:10:30. > :10:42.on the issue on BBC One tomorrow. I think from my personal point of

:10:43. > :10:46.view it is emotional side. I hate seeing people in emotional or mental

:10:47. > :10:50.torment. It is really sad because it takes you down a very different path

:10:51. > :10:54.in life. The point of the campaign with the marathon is you want to

:10:55. > :10:56.reduce the stigma. A lot of people talk about mental health like it is

:10:57. > :11:11.heavily normal. I spoke to Paul this afternoon.

:11:12. > :11:14.There were a couple of things that happened in life with relationships

:11:15. > :11:18.and work in issues like that that sent me off kilter couple of years

:11:19. > :11:24.ago. That was probably the main catalyst for it and then I've been

:11:25. > :11:27.struggling with it since then. Looking at other people and thinking

:11:28. > :11:35.they had it all with jobs and partners. I think there was a lot to

:11:36. > :11:39.do with that. I had hit 30 the era and did not think my life was going

:11:40. > :11:42.away necessarily that my peers were going and there was a lot of

:11:43. > :11:46.comparisons and compare myself to others. Prince William and Prince

:11:47. > :11:50.Harry have spoken out this week. Giving this will help people

:11:51. > :11:54.understand the issues to make them more willing to talk about mental

:11:55. > :11:58.health issues? I hope so. They have been absolutely fantastic for us in

:11:59. > :12:02.our journey. There are so high-profile that they attract so

:12:03. > :12:06.much attention. These are things that are genuine to them and have

:12:07. > :12:12.affected them. If they can speak out and say they have suffered or have

:12:13. > :12:18.sought help then that is great. You met Harry. We met Harry and William

:12:19. > :12:25.and Kate. I spent most of my time with Harry. What did you talk about?

:12:26. > :12:33.He was quite open and honest about his experience in the services and

:12:34. > :12:37.here seen a lot of vets with post-traumatic stress disorder and

:12:38. > :12:40.problems like that. He spoke to us about our problems and about mental

:12:41. > :12:45.health and how to start about in society as a whole. He was genuinely

:12:46. > :12:48.open and honest and knowledgeable and wanted to learn more from us as

:12:49. > :12:55.well so it was quite a surprise. Do you feel better now? The running,

:12:56. > :13:06.the one thing I would stress from this process is, the running has

:13:07. > :13:15.been... Out you didn't startle November? I hadn't done any exercise

:13:16. > :13:20.before. I started in November and have dropped all antidepressants now

:13:21. > :13:26.and so they do the running. That is vital for me. Exercise is crucial in

:13:27. > :13:30.the repair for mental health. I was so this is an overnight cure and

:13:31. > :13:33.will be absolutely fine when to start running but in terms of

:13:34. > :13:38.keeping me on a balanced level and a coping strategy it has been

:13:39. > :13:48.fantastic. It is very good to see. He looked very well. Crossed. Thank

:13:49. > :13:51.you very much, Peter. Cheers. -- fingers crossed.

:13:52. > :13:58.And the first programme in the two part series -

:13:59. > :14:00.Mind over Marathon - is on BBC One tomorrow

:14:01. > :14:10.And see how Paul gets on in the second programme next week.

:14:11. > :14:13.Still ahead tonight: Why Christmas arrived more than a year late

:14:14. > :14:15.for the friends and family of Brenda Simpson.

:14:16. > :14:18.A new home for endangered hedgehogs in an East Yorkshire village giving

:14:19. > :14:54.We were talking last night about caravans. I will reach one of seven

:14:55. > :14:59.e-mails. -- several e-mails. Linda says iPhone post comments about

:15:00. > :15:02.caravans and fear. To make it even I invite him to stay mine for a week

:15:03. > :15:12.in Mablethorpe. Would you like to stay with lender for a week in

:15:13. > :15:16.Mablethorpe? -- with lender. -- Linda says iPhone and Paul's

:15:17. > :15:25.comments about caravans very under fear. We will see a week and warm

:15:26. > :15:28.front heading down from the North West which will bring perhaps a

:15:29. > :15:33.little drizzle in the morning. Predominantly dry weather looks set

:15:34. > :15:37.to continue which is not good news for farmers and growers. The cloud

:15:38. > :15:41.has been steadily pushing down from the North West during the course of

:15:42. > :15:48.today. It will continue and we will see that process. This cold front is

:15:49. > :15:51.later Friday into Friday night bringing a little drizzle and no

:15:52. > :15:56.more than that. It will introduce a cooler air the weekend but brighter

:15:57. > :16:03.conditions should bring some sunny spells. Next week a proper cold push

:16:04. > :16:06.that may mean showers of a wintry nature. The forecast tonight sees

:16:07. > :16:11.that I'd continue to present the North West, perhaps bringing 12

:16:12. > :16:16.spots of light rain or drizzle. We will see most temperatures around

:16:17. > :16:22.seven Celsius. The sun rises at ten to six in the morning. The next high

:16:23. > :16:31.water time in whole Victoria Dock at quarter to one in the morning. --

:16:32. > :16:37.Hull. That week and warm front might bring a little patchy drizzle and it

:16:38. > :16:42.will be quite dry but some places quite crowded. Hopefully somewhere

:16:43. > :16:46.some cloudy spells. The warm front will bring some milder era ends with

:16:47. > :16:52.two or three degrees up on today with highs of 15 Celsius. A similar

:16:53. > :16:56.sort of day on Friday. It will be mostly dry but rather cloudy with a

:16:57. > :17:00.bit of light patchy rain on Friday night. The weekend looks a bit

:17:01. > :17:06.colder Pirbright was some sunshine and variable amounts of cloud.

:17:07. > :17:18.Mentioning Victoria Dock is not a get out of jail free card. D1 me to

:17:19. > :17:21.reply to Lynda tonight? You're always on for a free holiday. Get in

:17:22. > :17:35.the caravan. Go away. When Brenda Simpson dropped her

:17:36. > :17:38.Christmas cards off at her post office in Ruskington,

:17:39. > :17:39.near Sleaford, in December 2015 she thought it might take a few

:17:40. > :17:42.days for them to arrive. That is - until Easter Saturday -

:17:43. > :17:47.16 months later - when she started getting puzzled calls

:17:48. > :17:49.from her friends across the country. I've got friends, family,

:17:50. > :17:52.acquaintances... Brenda has a long

:17:53. > :17:54.Christmas card list. In 2015, she spent more

:17:55. > :17:56.than ?40 on postage sending I posted them early

:17:57. > :18:05.to avoid disappointment. Everyone thinks it's quite funny,

:18:06. > :18:34.but for me it's quite upsetting. cos you wouldn't be

:18:35. > :18:37.sending Christmas cards From her home village of Ruskington,

:18:38. > :18:40.Brenda sent 82 cards Some went North to Blackpool,

:18:41. > :18:43.Bradford and Rotherham. And some were sent south to London,

:18:44. > :18:46.Devon and St Austell in Cornwall. But they've taken 16 months

:18:47. > :18:50.to reach their destinations. Brenda posted her cards at the post

:18:51. > :18:53.office in her local supermarket. So long after she delivered them,

:18:54. > :18:56.no one has yet been able to explain It's not the money it's

:18:57. > :19:08.the principle of the thing. If you send a Christmas card you

:19:09. > :19:16.expect them to get it. Maybe one might call which is understandable.

:19:17. > :19:21.But for that is a lot of cards to go missing. A hell of a lot.

:19:22. > :19:23.The Royal Mail told us it's investigating.

:19:24. > :19:25.This year I'm not sending Christmas cards.

:19:26. > :19:36.It's not just the stamps, if the cards as well.

:19:37. > :19:39.Bren's now having to explain to dozens of worried

:19:40. > :19:46.The team which runs Hornsea's independent lifeboat say

:19:47. > :19:49.a new tractor to get the boat in and out of the water

:19:50. > :19:52.It was bought with a ?96,000 donation and replaces

:19:53. > :19:54.a number of decades-old tractors that were struggling

:19:55. > :20:02.to cope with driving in and out of the North Sea.

:20:03. > :20:05.The Lego daffodils in Hull City centre that were sold off yesterday

:20:06. > :20:09.People queued for hours to get one of the flowers

:20:10. > :20:11.which were on display in King Edward Square as part

:20:12. > :20:14.They were given away to nearly 2,000 people

:20:15. > :20:23.Burton Fleming in East Yorkshire is welcoming dozens

:20:24. > :20:27.It has become the first hedgehog friendly village in the North.

:20:28. > :20:29.Around fifty of them have been put in gardens across the village.

:20:30. > :20:32.Jill Archbold is there - have they been exploring

:20:33. > :20:43.A quick paint job - and Jason - is one of 50 rescued hedgehogs

:20:44. > :20:53.hedgehog friendly village - where many families are happy

:20:54. > :20:58.to see Burton Fleming's new arrivals up close...

:20:59. > :21:03.The children had never seen a hedgehog live until we started doing

:21:04. > :21:09.this project so we're hoping there will be more out in the wild for

:21:10. > :21:10.people to see and observed and back the old hedgehogs they released it

:21:11. > :21:14.when we were children. And in many of the

:21:15. > :21:16.village's back gardens - local residents have been

:21:17. > :21:23.getting their hedgerows ready... We have put it under the hedge so it

:21:24. > :21:27.can go next door but hopefully it will stay around so we can watch it.

:21:28. > :21:31.It is putting it back to the wild so if it doesn't stay it doesn't stay

:21:32. > :21:33.but at least that is a lot of rough area around here where hopefully it

:21:34. > :21:35.area around here where hopefully it can thrive.

:21:36. > :21:38.Every hedgehog has come from a sanctuary near Scunthorpe -

:21:39. > :21:40.precariously packed yesterday and brought 50 miles

:21:41. > :21:52.Look at the people. The people here are lovely and they are so keen to

:21:53. > :21:54.help and hopefully this lot will be happy and breed. We are putting a

:21:55. > :21:56.new generation back. We are putting a new

:21:57. > :21:58.generation back. And saying goodbye to a rescued

:21:59. > :22:00.hedgehog is all part of the job for sanctuary owner

:22:01. > :22:08.Frank... Our whole purpose in life is to take

:22:09. > :22:16.an injured or sick hedgehog and make it better and written to the wild.

:22:17. > :22:21.The wild animal and not a pet. -- return it to the wild. For me it is

:22:22. > :22:25.the result of hard work and very satisfying.

:22:26. > :22:29.And as the sun sets over Burton Fleming its hoped this

:22:30. > :22:34.village's new residents will walk out into the Wolds.

:22:35. > :22:43.Are they out exploring their homes? Not quite yet. Everyone who has

:22:44. > :22:48.taken home one of those hedgehogs has been told to wait until dusk but

:22:49. > :22:53.I am allowed to let the first of the hedgehogs out in Burton Fleming. It

:22:54. > :22:58.looks like they are probably going to be a bit camera shy. They are

:22:59. > :23:02.deep inside the stroller. It is unlikely they will return to those

:23:03. > :23:06.boxes once they are out in the Yorkshire walls but is hoped they

:23:07. > :23:07.will meet again and breed together and boost the population in this

:23:08. > :23:30.area. -- Wolds. Let's get a recap of the national

:23:31. > :23:32.and regional headlines Fifty days to the general election,
