:04:19. > :04:23.Investigations are continuing into what's believed to be one

:04:24. > :04:31.of the worst cyber attacks on hospitals in this countrx.

:04:32. > :04:34.Unions have criticised a decision to allow a private company to take

:04:35. > :04:38.over running some ambulance services in Hull.

:04:39. > :04:41.The Thames Ambulance Servicd has recently taken over the pathent

:04:42. > :04:45.transport contract across northern Lincolnshire from the NHS

:04:46. > :04:48.and now looks set to run a similar service in Hull.

:04:49. > :05:02.The Yorkshire Ambulance service currently provides transport

:05:03. > :05:05.for patients who are unable to get to and from hospitals because

:05:06. > :05:07.of their medical conditions - patients in need of life saving

:05:08. > :05:10.treatment like chemotherapy or dialysis are often helped.

:05:11. > :05:14.The contract to provide this service in Hull was put up for tenddr

:05:15. > :05:16.by the local Clinical Commissioning Group.

:05:17. > :05:19.The Yorkshire Ambulance Service bid to keep the contract

:05:20. > :05:22.but we understand it's lost out to a private company

:05:23. > :05:28.A decision condemned by the Union which represents many

:05:29. > :05:43.Something is should be in the public's right to control and the

:05:44. > :05:47.NHS is one of them. And the Ambulance Service is an important

:05:48. > :05:49.part of that. So giving that to a private company is not the right

:05:50. > :05:53.place. It will now be run bx a place. It will now be run bx a

:05:54. > :05:57.company that needs to make ` profit. Whenever you give it to somdbody

:05:58. > :06:00.that needs to make a proper, it is not run for the right reasons.

:06:01. > :06:03.Because of a confidentialitx clause neither Hull's CCG nor the Thames

:06:04. > :06:06.But just last month, the Thames group took over

:06:07. > :06:08.the running of non urgent p`tient transport across

:06:09. > :06:19.The same company also moved its headquarters from Essex to Lincoln.

:06:20. > :06:24.We know a similar contract will be up for grabs in east Riding shortly

:06:25. > :06:27.and we also know managers whthin the Thames group will be interested in

:06:28. > :06:31.bidding for similar contracts in our area. Thank you.

:06:32. > :06:34.Earlier I spoke to the Hull East MP Karl Turner and asked him if he d

:06:35. > :06:38.welcome a private company coming in if it did a better than job

:06:39. > :06:41.I don't think they can do a better job.

:06:42. > :06:43.Look, it's disappointing thhs, but I don't blame the CCG

:06:44. > :06:45.and I don't blame Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

:06:46. > :06:48.The blame for this must be firmly at the door of the Tory govdrnment

:06:49. > :06:54.who legislated in the health and social care act to dict`te

:06:55. > :06:57.to CCGs that they must use the private sector in procurement.

:06:58. > :07:00.Let me come back to that in a moment, Unison say it's bad

:07:01. > :07:03.for staff and bad for patients, they can't possibly know th`t

:07:04. > :07:06.until something is actually tried, and nor can you?

:07:07. > :07:10.No, we can't and the truth hs, we have to see what their sdrvice

:07:11. > :07:12.is like and make sure it's up to scratch.

:07:13. > :07:16.But the reality is, it seems pretty strange does on it,

:07:17. > :07:19.that turns Ambulance Servicd will running patient transport

:07:20. > :07:31.People are probably unlikelx to be able to understand that.

:07:32. > :07:37.Your constituents will only care about the transport they get.

:07:38. > :07:40.They are not going to be bothered about who is running the service,

:07:41. > :07:44.I think people will be worrhed about who is providing the service.

:07:45. > :07:46.I think people are concerned that this government are providing

:07:47. > :07:49.an opportunity for the priv`te sector to run public servicds..

:07:50. > :07:54.They don't want the private sector to be involved in running it.

:07:55. > :07:57.Mr Turner, during the New L`bour years, you were driving

:07:58. > :08:01.through reforms in the NHS and using private money,

:08:02. > :08:05.PFI deals, you know that, you did it?

:08:06. > :08:11.Peter, the health and social care act provides a situation whdreby CCG

:08:12. > :08:16.must go to the private sector for 49% of their procurement.

:08:17. > :08:19.That's very different to thd tiny percentages which the previous

:08:20. > :08:21.Labour government used to get waiting lists down.

:08:22. > :08:23.That's the difference, Peter.

:08:24. > :08:30.This is the Tory government's idea of a private good and public bad.

:08:31. > :08:41.Just a final question, if that service was run

:08:42. > :08:43.better by Thames than the Yorkshire Ambulance

:08:44. > :08:45.Service, hypothetically, would you then back it?

:08:46. > :08:48.Peter, the reality is, thank goodness the people

:08:49. > :08:51.who were running it in the first place, Yorkshire Ambulance

:08:52. > :08:54.Service, the same staff will be running it now.

:08:55. > :08:55.Because they will be TUPE transferred.

:08:56. > :08:59.I hope the service doesn't go down the pan.

:09:00. > :09:02.The fear I've got though, which is a real one,

:09:03. > :09:04.is when a private company comes into run the NHS,

:09:05. > :09:08.And when profits are involved in the NHS,

:09:09. > :09:10.patient safety is normally `t risk because standards drop.

:09:11. > :09:14.Mr Turner, very good to talk to you tonight,

:09:15. > :09:21.The people behind plans to build a new visitor centre at Spurn

:09:22. > :09:22.in East Yorkshire say new rdsearch shows the public

:09:23. > :09:26.The plans for the centre have already been rejected once

:09:27. > :09:30.Opponents say it's a flood risk and will ruin the view,

:09:31. > :09:45.but the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust say their survey shows it's wanted.

:09:46. > :09:51.This is fantastic research for us and excellent investment ovdr the

:09:52. > :09:53.last few years. To have this area, it is the missing link in this

:09:54. > :09:54.network of facilities. To have this research that says 70%

:09:55. > :09:57.of people want to see the facility like that,

:09:58. > :10:10.is fantastic to hear. It was a pretty chilly one `cross

:10:11. > :10:15.East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire We are holding onto that cold out

:10:16. > :10:19.across the next couple of d`ys. Any coastal showers fizzle out `nd

:10:20. > :10:26.things turn dry. Temperaturds do take a tumble under clear skies Up

:10:27. > :10:30.to three Celsius. Patchy fog across southern part of Lincolnshire. Sunny

:10:31. > :10:35.spells elsewhere. They won't last, cloudy conditions spread from the

:10:36. > :10:38.West. There comes the weathdr front introducing patchy rain. Tolorrow's

:10:39. > :10:44.hires struggling at nine or 10 Celsius. It is banks to this area of

:10:45. > :10:50.low pressure. We will see frequent showers over the next few d`ys but

:10:51. > :10:55.it is producing cold air so do expect frosty nights. Good night.

:10:56. > :11:02.But it from us tonight. Join us again tomorrow night if you can

:11:03. > :11:12.up to around 12. Mick Miller has the national picture.

:11:13. > :11:16.The weather may have turned colder but for many of us today there was

:11:17. > :11:18.abundant sunshine. This is from
