:00:16. > :00:18.going to welcome "more visitors than ever" - after 60,000

:00:19. > :00:20.people came into the city centre on its first day.

:00:21. > :00:23.As well as those watching the light and sound spectacular,

:00:24. > :00:25.organisers estimate tens of thousands also watched the huge

:00:26. > :00:27.fireworks show from along both banks of the Humber.

:00:28. > :00:37.Here's our culture correspondent, Anne-Marie Tasker.

:00:38. > :00:40.Hull's reign as UK City of Culture came in with a bang,

:00:41. > :00:42.as 15,000 fireworks exploded across the city's sky.

:00:43. > :00:45.25,000 people packed in, to see a show organisers promised

:00:46. > :00:54.would be bigger than London's on New Year's Eve.

:00:55. > :01:02.It was good to hear the Housemartins.

:01:03. > :01:06.I can't wait to see all the other events and I will certainly be

:01:07. > :01:08.going to a lot of them, great for the city.

:01:09. > :01:11.A lot of work must have gone into that and it is very impressive

:01:12. > :01:16.and good to see something so spectacular in Hull.

:01:17. > :01:17.But before the fireworks, another spectacle had

:01:18. > :01:24.For a week, Made in Hull will look back at a century

:01:25. > :01:28.of the city's history - the blitz, the dozens

:01:29. > :01:30.of trawlermen lost at sea and happier times like

:01:31. > :01:35.Hull City's Premier League promotion.

:01:36. > :01:38.There are lots of people and apparently there will be 8000

:01:39. > :01:41.people coming and going in the next couple of days and

:01:42. > :01:49.I can't wait to hear and see how the audience respond.

:01:50. > :02:01.Elsewhere, crowds experienced what it would be like to walk out

:02:02. > :02:03.onto the pitch at the Kcom stadium - experienced installations -

:02:04. > :02:11.and watched other films on some of the city's iconic buildings.

:02:12. > :02:13.When Hull won the City of Culture title three years ago,

:02:14. > :02:17.the City Council said it would bring an extra ?60 million into the city.

:02:18. > :02:20.Organisers hope an extra million visitors will come during 2017 -

:02:21. > :02:32.this opening event's got them off to a good start.

:02:33. > :02:35.The reaction has been hugely positive and it'll welcome more

:02:36. > :02:38.visitors than ever and it will change the city for the better

:02:39. > :02:46.as we look towards what we want the city to be in the future.

:02:47. > :02:49.Three and a half tonnes of fireworks got city of culture off

:02:50. > :02:51.to an explosive start - one organisers hope to maintain

:02:52. > :03:05.The East Midlands Ambulance Service which covers

:03:06. > :03:06.Lincolnshire says it's experienced its busiest

:03:07. > :03:11.Staff had to cut meal breaks last night to help cope with what's been

:03:12. > :03:12.described as an exceptional number of calls.

:03:24. > :03:33.For him to be just laid in a room for two hours in his football kit

:03:34. > :03:35.with his ankle like that with no painkillers or anything,

:03:36. > :03:38.that could have had serious implications on his future,

:03:39. > :03:44.not just his footballing career but his normal life.

:03:45. > :03:47.We actually have more staff on than we normally would have.

:05:10. > :05:14.Scunthorpe United led until the 84th minute when Peterborough equalised.

:05:15. > :05:16.But Grimsby Town had a happier afternoon winning
