:01:45. > :01:46.the short drive to Molescroft Court to see her Mum who has advanced
:01:47. > :01:49.alzeihmers - by March 85-year-old Mabs will have to be
:01:50. > :01:52.looked after elsewhere - news her family says
:01:53. > :02:02.is distressing... If it gets close to the date when
:02:03. > :02:10.they want to close she will end up in and care and there are some
:02:11. > :02:16.pretty bad ones out there. I don't think she has much longer to live.

:02:36. > :02:38.are in danger of going out of business within three years -
:02:39. > :02:41.it found 5000 homes could close because they carry too much debt
:02:42. > :02:44.and don't make enough profit to cover loan repayments -
:02:45. > :02:47.on average care homes make just over 'S thought some residents and staff
:02:48. > :02:51.may be transferred to a new care home currently being
:02:52. > :02:58.built in Beverley - may be transferred
:02:59. > :03:11.to a new care home currently being built in Beverley -
:03:12. > :03:14.but Chris argues this I can't check it out because it is
:03:15. > :03:35.not in existence yet. The story of Mabs having
:03:36. > :03:38.to leave the place she lives is not an usual one -
:03:39. > :03:41.and it's a situation other families are likely to face as care homes
:03:42. > :03:44.struggle to provide care whilst Mike Padgham runs a care
:03:45. > :03:48.home in Scarborough. Earlier I asked him why so many care
:03:49. > :03:57.homes are closing or in trouble. It's the amount of money that people
:03:58. > :04:05.can afford to pay for care and that is based on the money available to
:04:06. > :04:08.local authorities. Today two thirds of the cost of a care home goes on
:04:09. > :04:14.staff wages so you can see things are being and staff working in care
:04:15. > :04:17.homes need to be paid more than the minimum national wage some people in
:04:18. > :04:21.care have higher needs so that adds extra pressure. Has the living wage
:04:22. > :04:26.shaken the foundations of care homes? I think it has. We have been
:04:27. > :04:31.saying that it is a challenge for us. That is not to say staff don't
:04:32. > :04:37.deserve the living wage but basically local authorities and what
:04:38. > :04:40.they can afford have not kept up with fit and successive governments
:04:41. > :04:45.have failed to address social care properly. Something needs to happen
:04:46. > :04:49.because it adds excess strain on the NHS. You could say that care homes
:04:50. > :04:51.in the past that had cheap labour and gotten away with it. It is no
:04:52. > :04:56.doubt that a lot of providers could doubt that a lot of providers could
:04:57. > :04:59.have paid more. The vast majority want to pay a rewarding salary to
:05:00. > :05:03.the workers because as time has gone on people in care homes now are much
:05:04. > :05:06.higher dependent than they used to be so the issue is to help the NHS
:05:07. > :05:11.and help people in social care. Care and help people in social care. Care
:05:12. > :05:14.homes need to pay more to do that. But they have not been rewarding
:05:15. > :05:22.them, they have been playing Lord wages. -- they have been paying low
:05:23. > :05:25.wages. I think care homes are willing to pay more but are
:05:26. > :05:29.struggling to make ends meet out because there is no doubt care homes
:05:30. > :05:35.are closing because they cannot provide the services that the state
:05:36. > :05:42.requires. What would you say to the social care Minister? I would like
:05:43. > :05:45.him to come and see what it is like trying to provide care in the front
:05:46. > :05:48.line and see the real issues facing us. We want to pay staff more and
:05:49. > :05:52.provide a good service and raise standards but need some help.
:05:53. > :05:56.The family of a man knocked down and left to die on the side
