:00:16. > :00:19.People have had to be rescued from their homes tonight as flooding

:00:20. > :00:23.The worst affected area was Hornsea, where at least 30

:00:24. > :00:28.Three people had to be saved from a car in the town as high tides

:00:29. > :00:30.and strong winds meant the sea overcame defences.

:00:31. > :00:32.Much of our coastline had been warned to expect flooding with high

:00:33. > :00:35.And it was Hornsea that came off worst.

:00:36. > :00:39.Pets being rescued in Hornsea tonight -

:00:40. > :00:48.trapped upstairs as flood water poured into homes.

:00:49. > :00:56.They were upstairs, but still, they were petrified. Frozen, she has been

:00:57. > :00:59.under the water. The little one. Just need to get them out to safety.

:01:00. > :01:01.On the seafront, a grandmother and two children had to be

:01:02. > :01:06.rescued from this car, moments before it sank.

:01:07. > :01:13.He had broken down seafront, did not think it was that deep and it was

:01:14. > :01:17.perhaps for or five feet deep where she entered the water. We got the

:01:18. > :01:18.children out first and then the Leigh Day, three minutes later the

:01:19. > :01:21.car assault, completely underwater. The tidal surge sent seawater

:01:22. > :01:23.into around 30 here - waves crashed over the sea wall

:01:24. > :01:26.and flooded nearby Seafront businesses were pounded

:01:27. > :01:38.by the sheer force of nature. Staff who were working at this

:01:39. > :01:42.amusement arcade described how the water took just 20 minutes to go

:01:43. > :01:47.from a trickle at the front door to a torrent. The flooding here has

:01:48. > :01:51.cost thousands of pounds worth of damage. You could not stop it even

:01:52. > :01:56.running in. The Greens could not cope with that. It was running down

:01:57. > :02:04.the Meanwood well. Mud is up to two or three feet. The front has been

:02:05. > :02:05.covered. There has been a lot of internal damage to the machines, I

:02:06. > :02:20.would imagine. Tried Kick It Out but it has come in

:02:21. > :02:24.and around the back. That is it. Very sickening but you cannot do

:02:25. > :02:27.much about it. It come straight down the road. I feel sorry for the

:02:28. > :02:27.people. Residents here feel that

:02:28. > :02:29.despite the advance warnings, the flooding in Hornsea took

:02:30. > :02:43.authorities, and It was awful. Started going into

:02:44. > :02:47.people's houses, helping older people and general people really.

:02:48. > :02:52.Was it a case of everyone pulling Was it a case of everyone pulling

:02:53. > :02:53.together? Yes, just trying to keep everyone save and if we could, get

:02:54. > :02:55.them out. The worry now is for the next high

:02:56. > :02:58.tide in the morning - rescuers fear if the wind doesn't

:02:59. > :03:00.change direction, the flooding could be even worse,

:03:01. > :03:03.though for many, the damage has Phillip Norton, BBC

:03:04. > :03:05.Look North, Hornsea. People living all along the East

:03:06. > :03:08.coast had been told to prepare for flooding with dozens of flood

:03:09. > :03:11.warnings issued by Pumps, extra defences

:03:12. > :03:13.and sandbags were used to try Some homes were evacuated in Hessle

:03:14. > :03:17.and the Army were knocking For many it was a day of watching

:03:18. > :03:21.and waiting nervously for high tide to pass,

:03:22. > :03:29.as Linsey Smith reports. All is calm on the Hessle Foreshore

:03:30. > :03:36.near Hull tonight. But this was one of nearly 30 places

:03:37. > :03:39.warned about flooding. Earlier this evening,

:03:40. > :03:40.some families were evacuated. Water came close to their homes -

:03:41. > :03:58.before finally receeding. Really relieved. I think many glass

:03:59. > :04:02.of wine is in order. Just to calm my nerves because it is a horrible

:04:03. > :04:04.feeling, because you just do not know what will happen.

:04:05. > :04:08.watched, and waited - but were thankful the temporary

:04:09. > :04:12.Along the coast, those keen to take photographs ignored

:04:13. > :04:14.the Environment Agency warnings to stay away.

:04:15. > :04:27.This thrill-seeker surfed the waves for 40 minutes earlier.

:04:28. > :04:36.In these conditions, the reason why I like it is because I am out there,

:04:37. > :04:40.there are no buildings or cars, just me at one with the sea, where I feel

:04:41. > :04:42.the safest, that is where I also feel the happiest.

:04:43. > :04:45.Hull's tidal barrier was key to protecting thousands of home.

:04:46. > :04:47.The East coast surge is being monitored and assessed

:04:48. > :04:52.from a dedicated command centre in Lincoln.

:04:53. > :04:58.This is an incredibly serious situation, that is why we have the

:04:59. > :05:01.army, air support, police all working together but it is about

:05:02. > :05:06.telling people that that support is there to be proportionate and we

:05:07. > :05:10.need to make sure people take these risks seriously, but if you look

:05:11. > :05:11.around, people are not panicking, they understand the risks and that

:05:12. > :05:14.is the correct response. Tonight, the environment agency say

:05:15. > :05:16.they are checking flood The more dangerous points have

:05:17. > :05:20.passed but the warning Linsey SMith, BBC Look

:05:21. > :05:29.North, South Ferriby. The Environment Agency has said

:05:30. > :05:31.tonight that it believes the worst has passed and it doesn't expect

:05:32. > :05:34.the situation to be as bad But dozens of flood warnings

:05:35. > :05:38.do remain in place all along the East Yorkshire

:05:39. > :05:40.and Lincolnshire coast. This is the latest map showing

:05:41. > :05:42.the places in red that The next high tide is tomorrow

:05:43. > :05:49.morning between 5:34am For the very latest weather

:05:50. > :06:10.and flooding information, listen Let us move ahead to the weekend

:06:11. > :06:15.forecast. Some snow is on the way. Here is Keeley Donovan.

:06:16. > :06:19.After today's weather, you will be pleased to know that

:06:20. > :06:22.we've had the highest of the tides, the storm surge has now moved away

:06:23. > :06:24.and the strong winds are beginning to ease.

:06:25. > :06:27.A warning for ice, however, on untreated roads and pavements

:06:28. > :06:29.into tomorrow and that's because we've had a fair few

:06:30. > :06:30.showers today, mainly affecting coastal areas,

:06:31. > :06:32.and we are expecting a widespread frost overnight.

:06:33. > :06:35.So, very cold and frosty conditions, temperatures quite a few

:06:36. > :06:37.degrees below freezing, particularly for inland spots.

:06:38. > :06:39.So, some slippery, frosty surfaces into tomorrow and we will still see

:06:40. > :06:42.that northerly wind feeding in a few wintry showers to the coast,

:06:43. > :06:45.still quite brisk along the coast, but not as strong as today.

:06:46. > :06:48.Everywhere else, dry and fine, plenty of sunshine but bitterly

:06:49. > :06:50.cold, temperatures only getting up to around three or four degrees.

:06:51. > :06:53.So, a very cold day to come tomorrow, but through tomorrow

:06:54. > :06:55.evening more cloud developing from the West and actually,

:06:56. > :06:58.on Sunday, it will develop into a milder day with temperatures

:06:59. > :07:02.But a lot of cloud through Sunday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

:07:03. > :07:23.Do send us your photos and videos of the tidal surge that we have

:07:24. > :07:25.experienced up and down the Yorkshire coast today.

:07:26. > :07:28.That's all from Look North tonight, we'll be back tomorrow afternoon

:07:29. > :07:30.at 5:30pm for a full round-up of the day's news.

:07:31. > :07:33.5-6 is the best we will have. It stays cold into the beginning of

:07:34. > :07:44.next week as well stop Good evening, a cold, icy

:07:45. > :07:50.night, but some others have other concerns. This was the scene earlier

:07:51. > :07:54.today, huge waves crashing on to the shoreline at Whitley Bay. We still

:07:55. > :08:00.have the peak of the high tide to come in other parts. This is the

:08:01. > :08:06.flood line number. It's if you have any concerns. The worst of the wind

:08:07. > :08:10.slowly comes -- subsiding. Wintry showers across the North of Scotland

:08:11. > :08:15.and some filtering well inland across the Midlands, giving a light

:08:16. > :08:17.dusting in some places. An icy night, temperatures widely close to

:08:18. > :08:27.or below freezing, particularly where you have snow cover. Tomorrow

:08:28. > :08:29.starts cold. A large chunk of the UK will have a fine, crisp,
