:00:00. > :00:00.And Theresa May has said she will publish her Brexit plan for the

:00:00. > :00:07.The headlines from BBC Look North this Wednesday lunchtime.

:00:08. > :00:10.Hundreds of steel workers who took a pay cut to save their jobs

:00:11. > :00:15.are told their gamble paid off as fortunes improve.

:00:16. > :00:18.And more than ?100,000 could be spent on a machine to blast chewing

:00:19. > :00:24.I've literally walked round for two minutes and found nearly 100 pieces

:00:25. > :00:40.of chewing gum on the ground here in Queen Victoria Square.

:00:41. > :00:44.A gamble by hundreds of Scunthorpe steel workers to take a pay cut last

:00:45. > :00:47.year to help secure their jobs for the future has paid off

:00:48. > :00:54.The new owners of the huge works say they have taken on new staff

:00:55. > :00:58.since last June and will soon reverse the 3% pay cut

:00:59. > :01:02.Our business correspondent, Leanne Brown, is at the plant.

:01:03. > :01:15.Leanne, steel had a gloomy future, what's changed?

:01:16. > :01:21.I remember standing here a year ago when the company was up for sale and

:01:22. > :01:27.there was talk of job losses. The new owners British Steel say in the

:01:28. > :01:30.last seven months they've managed to get the company in a strong

:01:31. > :01:38.financial position. They say it is all down to the turnaround plan

:01:39. > :01:42.which is for cost savings and also to gain significant contracts with

:01:43. > :01:47.long-term and new customers. Things like this, the Hinkley point power

:01:48. > :01:52.station in Somerset. They have a contract that to supply steel for

:01:53. > :01:59.the accommodation blocks and providing Railtrack in Algeria and

:02:00. > :02:00.Italy. The company's executive chairman is say they are building on

:02:01. > :02:01.the British Steel brand. We thought that was just

:02:02. > :02:04.one central commercial organisation and it was just

:02:05. > :02:06.one approach, yes. As you know we have been

:02:07. > :02:10.splitting it inbetween the four major products,

:02:11. > :02:14.the rail business, the rough The more bridges, the more

:02:15. > :02:35.skyscrapers, or whatever, What about that pay cut that workers

:02:36. > :02:43.took? Workers agreed to take that 3% pay cut and unions say that will be

:02:44. > :02:44.reinstated in June and the decision was a gamble that paid off.

:02:45. > :02:46.There is pride in the British Steel logo.

:02:47. > :02:48.There is pride working for British Steel.

:02:49. > :02:51.Everybody is in an upbeat mood and I don't just mean on

:02:52. > :02:53.the works, in the town, in the communities, everybody's

:02:54. > :03:04.upbeat about the success story of British Steel.

:03:05. > :03:12.British Steel is also to take on some new trainees. More details of

:03:13. > :03:17.the jobs available are at a jobs fair this afternoon. I do have to

:03:18. > :03:22.say it is still a difficult time ahead for them. They say they need

:03:23. > :03:25.help and support from the Government to continue their financial growth.

:03:26. > :03:27.Thank you very much. The Church of England is defending

:03:28. > :03:29.the Rector of Boston after she described the town

:03:30. > :03:32.as murderous and divided. The Reverend Alyson Buxton,

:03:33. > :03:35.seen here with Princess Anne, is in charge at the town's main

:03:36. > :03:38.church, the Boston Stump. Her comments in an email

:03:39. > :03:41.have been made public. Her bosses say she works very hard

:03:42. > :03:44.to celebrate and serve The Prince of Wales

:03:45. > :03:49.and the Duchess of Cornwall Clarence House has confirmed Charles

:03:50. > :03:54.and Camilla's tour will take place They'll see the newly

:03:55. > :03:58.renovated Ferens Art Gallery, as well as Holy Trinity Church

:03:59. > :04:03.and The Deep aquarium. The decision to close

:04:04. > :04:05.Grimsby's ice rink will have North East Lincolnshire Council said

:04:06. > :04:11.the 1970s skating rink But opposition councillors

:04:12. > :04:16.have demanded a rethink. Local ice hockey clubs have

:04:17. > :04:21.protested against the closure. Senior health officials say they can

:04:22. > :04:24.give people in Lincolnshire much better care but only if big

:04:25. > :04:28.changes are made. A small group of protesters

:04:29. > :04:31.were outside a meeting in Sleaford this morning where all proposals

:04:32. > :04:34.were being looked at, including centralising maternity

:04:35. > :04:37.services in Lincoln. I have actually been in and asked

:04:38. > :04:44.if we could go in and They are discussing the options

:04:45. > :04:50.for our health care, You know, they're not actually

:04:51. > :04:54.allowing us to listen in on what those options may

:04:55. > :04:58.or may not be. More than ?100,000 could be spent

:04:59. > :05:02.on a machine to remove chewing gum The Hull Daily Mail reports that

:05:03. > :05:08.a number of gum removal methods are being trialled by

:05:09. > :05:10.the City Council. Millions of pounds have been spent

:05:11. > :05:13.repaving the city centre, but it's already dotted

:05:14. > :05:16.with sticky gum. They've spent millions on trying

:05:17. > :05:22.to make Hull City centre more attractive with new paving

:05:23. > :05:26.and street furniture. But efforts are being blighted

:05:27. > :05:31.by an old problem - chewing gum. Look down and you'll see sticky

:05:32. > :05:34.white and grey splodges dotted I can't believe we have spent

:05:35. > :05:46.all that money and it's like that. It spoils all the good work that

:05:47. > :05:48.everybody has put into it, There are bins close by, rather

:05:49. > :05:56.than spitting it on the floor,, To see how bad the problem is I'm

:05:57. > :06:02.going to do a very unscientific scout around and count the number

:06:03. > :06:05.of chewing gum pieces on the ground As I said, not a scientific approach

:06:06. > :06:18.but I've literally walked around for two minutes and found nearly 100

:06:19. > :06:22.pieces of chewing gum on the ground And what about the cost

:06:23. > :06:27.of clearing it up? The regeneration of the city centre

:06:28. > :06:32.is costing ?25 million. The average price of

:06:33. > :06:35.a piece of gum is 3p. But every time it ends up

:06:36. > :06:40.on the floor it costs around ?1.50, Normal street cleaning

:06:41. > :06:46.doesn't shift it. So Hull City Council is trialling

:06:47. > :06:49.new machines in the hope But it's reported it

:06:50. > :06:55.could cost a six-figure sum. The Hull City coach says

:06:56. > :07:04.he and his entire team will visit Ryan Mason in hospital in London

:07:05. > :07:07.at the weekend as the player continues his recovery

:07:08. > :07:08.from a fractured skull. The midfielder was

:07:09. > :07:11.injured during the game Ahead of their EFL Cup semifinal

:07:12. > :07:15.match with Manchester United, head coach Marco Silva refused to be

:07:16. > :07:18.drawn on whether Burnley had bid ?10 million

:07:19. > :07:21.for Robert Snodgrass. He said the team was

:07:22. > :07:26.focusing on other things. At this moment, the most important

:07:27. > :07:29.we need to support the player, support his family is the most

:07:30. > :07:33.important at this moment. Of course, it is not an easy moment

:07:34. > :07:38.for us, like a team but you need to be strong, to be together and to

:07:39. > :07:43.keep together all the players and support Ryan is the most

:07:44. > :07:49.important at this moment. Now a look at the weather forecast

:07:50. > :07:53.with Abbie Dewhurst. It is quite a cloudy picture

:07:54. > :07:56.across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, still a fair bit

:07:57. > :07:59.of fog lingering in the far We will take a quick look

:08:00. > :08:03.at the pressure chart because it shows we're going to see a squeeze

:08:04. > :08:06.on these isobars over The wind direction will swing

:08:07. > :08:09.round and feed in some very cold air from the south

:08:10. > :08:13.and the near continent. This evening, sorry this afternoon

:08:14. > :08:18.will start to see the cloud slowly Still some sunshine and brightness

:08:19. > :08:22.to be enjoyed for the far Here it is actually feeling

:08:23. > :08:25.quite mild, temperatures Elsewhere under all this fog and low

:08:26. > :08:30.cloud feeling cold with temperatures only getting up to three or four

:08:31. > :08:32.Celsius. Then this cloud will continue

:08:33. > :08:35.to track up towards the north this evening and overnight we will feed

:08:36. > :08:38.in some very cold air, so you can see as the map turns blue, there

:08:39. > :08:41.is a widespread frost developing. It is going to be a very cold,

:08:42. > :08:44.frosty start and temperatures will be right down in the minus figures

:08:45. > :08:47.and that southerly breeze We will start the day tomorrow

:08:48. > :08:51.on a very cold note, take care for your morning commute

:08:52. > :08:53.it is going to be Temperatures will really struggle

:08:54. > :08:57.at around zero for much of the day. Factor in that wind-chill

:08:58. > :09:00.and it will feel sub zero. It will feel like temperatures

:09:01. > :09:03.are down at minus five, minus six but things will turn

:09:04. > :09:06.a little less cold thankfully on Friday as we make our way

:09:07. > :09:09.towards the weekend but it is going to be quite a cloudy day,

:09:10. > :09:23.an unsettled one on Saturday Yes make sure you wrap up warm

:09:24. > :09:28.tomorrow. That is all. Look North is back at 630. Peter will have a full

:09:29. > :09:33.round-up of the day's news. Goodbye.
