0:00:08 > 0:00:09Good evening.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Doctors in Lincolnshire havd launched a new project to try

0:00:12 > 0:00:13to diagnose more cancers early.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16A recent NHS review revealed that the county has some

0:00:16 > 0:00:18of the worst rates in England.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Lincolnshire West CCG has the worst cancer detection rates

0:00:21 > 0:00:25in the country - with just 33% of patients being diagnosed early.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28That's compared to the national average of 50%.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31After diagnosis, the current ambition is that 70% of pathents

0:00:31 > 0:00:35should survive the first ye`r, but only South Lincolnshire

0:00:35 > 0:00:37meets that target.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Now GPs at 12 practices will trial a new computer programme

0:00:39 > 0:00:43to see whether it helps identify those most at risk.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Here's our health correspondent, Vicky Johnson.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50Almost 1000 people a day are diagnosed with cancer in the UK.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Survival rates are improving, but patients have a much better

0:00:54 > 0:00:57chance if the disease is diagnosed early.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00How's it's going?

0:01:00 > 0:01:04Not too bad, recovering.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Peter Crosby's recently had surgery to treat his lung cancer,

0:01:06 > 0:01:11but initially he was given antibiotics for a persistent cough.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13Took one more course, and then we decided to go

0:01:13 > 0:01:16to hospital to see if there was anything on the chest.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18That's when the shadow was discovered.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22And it went from being an x,ray to being a CAT scan,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24to a PET scan, that took...

0:01:24 > 0:01:27About six weeks.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30If Peter turned up at his doctors now, it's likely his cancer

0:01:30 > 0:01:33diagnosis would be more prolpt, thanks to Lincolnshire's

0:01:33 > 0:01:36new Find Out Faster programle.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39It would be picked up a little bit more quickly.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43But Find Out Faster would h`ve meant he would have had the scan

0:01:43 > 0:01:45five, six weeks earlier.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48At the moment, he's fine, which is great, but it could make

0:01:48 > 0:01:50a difference for other patidnts

0:01:50 > 0:01:52For the next six months, doctors at 12 practices

0:01:52 > 0:01:57across Lincolnshire will be piloting the QCancer programme,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59and this should help them predict the risk

0:01:59 > 0:02:01of cancer in their patients.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05We all know that even experhenced doctors sometimes fail to m`ke

0:02:05 > 0:02:07a diagnosis promptly when the symptoms aren't typical.

0:02:07 > 0:02:14And this tool is just something which makes them think seriously

0:02:14 > 0:02:17about further investigation.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20There'll also be much more rapid access to tests,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23benefiting all patients.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26The majority of patients th`t come through the pathway

0:02:27 > 0:02:28will not have cancer.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30But for them, it's the reassurance that they don't have

0:02:30 > 0:02:33cancer and they can get on with their lives.

0:02:33 > 0:02:38If diagnosis rates do improve, the programme will be rolled out

0:02:38 > 0:02:44to all GP's surgeries in thd county.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47The main road into Hull was closed for several hours today

0:02:47 > 0:02:49after a crash between a car and a tractor.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52The A63 was closed after the accident on the westbound

0:02:52 > 0:02:54carriageway between South C`ve and North Cave.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57The air ambulance was called to the scene to help

0:02:57 > 0:03:00treat a casualty.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03A former Ukip MEP from East Yorkshire insists

0:03:03 > 0:03:07the party still has a futurd despite its recent difficulties

0:03:07 > 0:03:09It follows comments made by Steven Woolfe -

0:03:09 > 0:03:12who quit the party after an altercation with Hull-based MEP

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Mike Hookem - claiming that Ukip is in a death spiral.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18But Godfrey Bloom, who was the party's first MDP

0:03:18 > 0:03:20in Yorkshire and the Humber, insists Ukip still

0:03:20 > 0:03:23has many supporters.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25No, it isn't in a death spiral.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27There's still plenty to do, because there are a view

0:03:27 > 0:03:30of people saying, well, we've had the referendum.

0:03:30 > 0:03:35But as has just been said, we could still be two years

0:03:35 > 0:03:36away from coming out.

0:03:36 > 0:03:45So, Ukip, until we are out, Ukip has a very real job to do.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48A special service was held at Lincoln cathedral last

0:03:48 > 0:03:50night for its new dean.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52The Very Reverend Christine Wilson is the first woman to take tp

0:03:52 > 0:03:56the role in its 900-year history.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59I think that I've always bedn in roles where I've had

0:03:59 > 0:04:01a pioneering role, stepping into roles that have perhaps

0:04:01 > 0:04:02been done by men before.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06It feels raher normal, thesd days, for women to be in senior roles

0:04:06 > 0:04:09and I've many friends and colleagues who are women

0:04:09 > 0:04:14who are deans and bishops in the Church of England.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17A Lincolnshire nursery has built what it claims is the largest

0:04:17 > 0:04:20pumpkin cannon in the UK.

0:04:20 > 0:04:26The six-metre cannon, created by Bells Nursery

0:04:26 > 0:04:33near Boston, uses gas canisters to fire the pumpkins

0:04:33 > 0:04:40hundreds of metres through the air.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43We've had an absolutely brilliant response to it.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Obviously, not something yot see everyday,

0:04:45 > 0:04:46especially in Lincolnshire!

0:04:46 > 0:04:50But we really just did it to give the locals something to talk about,

0:04:50 > 0:04:54and I think we've definitelx achieved that here today.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Tonight is your final chance to nominate someone

0:04:56 > 0:04:58for a special award from thd BBC.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02If you know a local sports volunteer who deserves an Unsung Hero award,

0:05:02 > 0:05:04then get in touch.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06You can give your suggestion by visiting the website

0:05:06 > 0:05:08and downloading a nomination form.

0:05:08 > 0:05:13You have until midnight to get your nomination in.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27The cloud will thin and bre`k, and we will see good spells

0:05:27 > 0:05:30of sunshine through the aftdrnoon.
