:00:02. > :00:05.Hello, welcome to Look North. Coming up in the programme.

:00:05. > :00:09.The Keswick school bus inquest - no evidence to show why car driver

:00:09. > :00:15.Patrick Short was on the wrong side of the road.

:00:15. > :00:19.Barred from the USA. Newcastle United's Joey Barton is refused

:00:19. > :00:22.entry, but we can reveal he's just been there.

:00:22. > :00:32.Also tonight, is it Teesside's airport or Durham's? An MP calls

:00:32. > :00:33.

:00:33. > :00:36.for a name change. And be ready for some Dirty Dancing.

:00:36. > :00:37.One of the most successful musicals in West End history is heading

:00:37. > :00:40.north. In sport, find out which of

:00:40. > :00:43.Sunderland's new signings are hoping to make their debut tonight.

:00:43. > :00:53.And after battling health problems, can swimmer Jo Jackson make an

:00:53. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :01:03.Chilling accounts from teenagers were read to an inquest into the

:01:03. > :01:06.Cumbria school bus crash today. One from a 14 year old schoolgirl, who

:01:06. > :01:09.lay trapped and injured, told how those trying to help her implored

:01:09. > :01:12.her not to die. Two pupils, Keiran Goulding and Chloe Walker, from

:01:12. > :01:17.Keswick School and 68-year-old motorist Patrick Short, were killed

:01:17. > :01:20.in the accident in May of last year. Day two of the inquest heard again

:01:20. > :01:23.this afternoon that it was still not clear why a car driven by Mr

:01:23. > :01:27.Short was on the wrong side of the road. Our reporter Alison Freeman

:01:27. > :01:37.joins us now. Alison, all the evidence has now been heard, so the

:01:37. > :01:40.

:01:40. > :01:49.cause still remains a mystery? Yes, we heard from the crash scene

:01:49. > :01:54.investigator today... I am sorry, we have lost that link.

:01:54. > :01:57.But here is a report from the inquest.

:01:57. > :01:59.Just moments before the crash, students had been handing out

:01:59. > :02:02.sweets to one another, chatting and listening to music. And in

:02:02. > :02:06.statements read to the court, the pupils described hearing an

:02:06. > :02:11.enormous bang as the bus crashed head on with the car. It rolled and

:02:11. > :02:16.hit a tree, sending pupils into the air and some out of the bus. One

:02:16. > :02:19.child became trapped in the bus. The pupil recalled... It kept

:02:19. > :02:23.occurring to me that I was still alive. People said to me don't die,

:02:23. > :02:30.don't die. Later freed, the child lost the use

:02:30. > :02:32.of the shoulder they were pinned down by.

:02:32. > :02:35.The inquest heard how 15-year-old Kieran Goulding and 16-year-old

:02:35. > :02:39.Chloe Walker were thrown through the window and crushed under the

:02:39. > :02:41.bus. They died instantly. The crash scene investigator PC Ian Hanson

:02:41. > :02:49.said Keiran and Chloe were not wearing seatbelts, but neither were

:02:49. > :02:52.another 31 of the total 38 pupils on board. He added though that

:02:52. > :02:57.because Chloe was kneeling on the seat and Keiran possibly standing

:02:57. > :03:00.in the aisle, they were not able to restrain themselves. The first

:03:00. > :03:05.officer to get to the bus described how she was met with a chaotic

:03:05. > :03:08.scene, with shoes, bags, coats and debris strewn around. PC Catherine

:03:08. > :03:14.Mullarky could see the trapped bodies of Keiran and Chloe but got

:03:14. > :03:17.no response from them. The officer in charge on the day described it

:03:17. > :03:22.as the most difficult and complex accident he has dealt with in 20

:03:22. > :03:25.years in the police force. But more than a year later, it seems no

:03:25. > :03:35.medical evidence can reveal exactly why Patrick Short drove on the

:03:35. > :03:40.

:03:40. > :03:43.wrong side of the road that day. Police are still investigating the

:03:43. > :03:44.unexplained deaths of a man and woman in County Durham after post

:03:44. > :03:46.mortem examinations proved inconclusive.

:03:46. > :03:50.The bodies of 51-year-old James McAndrew and 36-year-old Helen Swan

:03:50. > :03:52.were found inside a house on John Street in Black Hill at Consett on

:03:52. > :04:02.Monday. The police are now awaiting the results of toxicology tests

:04:02. > :04:03.

:04:03. > :04:05.which are likely to take several weeks.

:04:05. > :04:08.And the Independent Police Complaints Commission is

:04:08. > :04:10.investigating the role of Durham Police in events leading to the

:04:10. > :04:13.murder of a mother of four in County Durham. 51-year-old Susan

:04:13. > :04:16.Forster was found with serious injuries at her home in Coundon

:04:16. > :04:19.near Bishop Auckland last May. Her husband Charles was charged with

:04:19. > :04:24.her murder. Durham Police had had contact with Susan Forster on four

:04:24. > :04:27.occasions before her death because of concerns for her welfare.

:04:27. > :04:34.Not exactly the news the club wanted, and the season hasn't even

:04:34. > :04:37.started. But Newcastle United have been told two of their players will

:04:37. > :04:40.not be allowed to visit the United States to take part in a pre-season

:04:40. > :04:44.tour. Joey Barton and Nile Ranger had both been in trouble with the

:04:44. > :04:47.law in the past, which has led to the US Embassy refusing them visas.

:04:47. > :04:50.But Barton's case is curious because he was allowed into the

:04:50. > :04:59.United States just a few short weeks ago. Our Chief Reporter Chris

:04:59. > :05:05.Stewart has the story. Joey Barton at what he likes to be known for,

:05:06. > :05:11.but he is also known for other things. Such as this. Being caught

:05:11. > :05:16.on CCTV carrying out an assault which led to a prison sentence. The

:05:16. > :05:21.US government will not let the men, except they already dead. Look at

:05:21. > :05:29.that Twitter feed of his team-mate Danny Simpson. This is Danny

:05:29. > :05:35.Simpson shopping in Los Angeles. And here he is on the left with a

:05:35. > :05:38.Joey Barton. It seems a bit odd you might think. The club did not have

:05:38. > :05:42.anything to say about this this afternoon but did put out a

:05:42. > :05:47.statement on behalf of the player in which he says all he can do is

:05:47. > :05:53.try to improve as a person. He added to that on his Twitter

:05:53. > :05:57.account, accusing the US Government of hypocrisy. The US embassy would

:05:57. > :06:02.not comment on the case this after them, but the rules are different

:06:02. > :06:06.for those working in the US and for those simply visiting. While a

:06:06. > :06:10.recent conviction would normally keep you out, the rules can be

:06:10. > :06:20.flexible. The players will still go on tour, but with the reserves to

:06:20. > :06:22.

:06:22. > :06:25.A retired couple from Washington in Tyne and Wear are celebrating after

:06:25. > :06:28.scooping nearly 2.5 million in Saturday's National Lottery. 71-

:06:28. > :06:35.year-old Fred and Doreen Smith arrived home late and did not

:06:35. > :06:38.immediately realise they had won. They've been giving Chris Storey

:06:38. > :06:44.their thoughts on success and Skegness.

:06:44. > :06:47.This is Fred and Doreen Smith. She prefers Doreen to Elizabeth,

:06:47. > :06:51.whatever the cheque says. And they didn't win the 161 million

:06:51. > :06:56.Euromillions rollover at the weekend. So they'll just have to

:06:56. > :06:58.make do with the 2.5 million they did win on the National Lottery.

:06:59. > :07:01.Home late from their grandson's wedding on Saturday night, and

:07:01. > :07:10.looking forward to Doreen's birthday on Sunday, he decided to

:07:10. > :07:20.check his numbers with his son, who got Doreen out of bed. He said,

:07:20. > :07:21.

:07:21. > :07:24.come downstairs! We have won the lottery!. At that we had won 10.

:07:24. > :07:28.They have been married for over 50 years, and have four children they

:07:28. > :07:31.say they'll set up for life. And they will then buy a bungalow to

:07:31. > :07:41.ease Doreen's hip problems. And what else?

:07:41. > :07:41.

:07:41. > :07:45.We are thinking about getting a holiday home in Benidorm. It was a

:07:45. > :07:54.toss-up between that and a caravan in Skegness. We were not sure what

:07:54. > :08:01.to do, but we decided on Benidorm. It is a bit warmer. I know too many

:08:01. > :08:07.people in Skegness. Fred and Doreen are off to their holidays in Spain.

:08:07. > :08:17.If this is to is what is like to them two review, imagine how those

:08:17. > :08:20.Euro lottery winners must feel. Looks like they are enjoying it.

:08:20. > :08:23.It was a decision that was hoped would represent a new exciting era

:08:23. > :08:26.for the airport. But the renaming of Teesside to Durham Tees Valley

:08:26. > :08:29.Airport in 2004 was always controversial and not without its

:08:29. > :08:32.critics. Now one of the area's MPs is leading a campaign to have the

:08:32. > :08:36.original name reinstated and he says he has the public's support.

:08:36. > :08:43.Stuart Whincup reports. It was a name that was supposed to

:08:43. > :08:46.bring with it international recognition. It didn't. For many,

:08:46. > :08:49.it brought criticism and ridicule. A made-up place name and a valley

:08:49. > :08:57.that doesn't exist. Now one MP is leading a campaign to reinstate the

:08:57. > :09:02.original name - Teesside Airport. People colitic Teesside Airport,

:09:02. > :09:06.the Durham Tees Valley branch has never taken off. Many of the

:09:06. > :09:08.roadside signs say Teesside. And there's been no shortage of

:09:08. > :09:11.alternative suggestions capitalising on some of the area's

:09:11. > :09:17.biggest name. From the greatest traveller of them all, one

:09:17. > :09:22.possibility is Captain Cook Airport. Others favour more recent names,

:09:22. > :09:24.like sporting hero Brian Clough. Or it could be be named after

:09:24. > :09:34.Middlesbrough's best known comedian - Chubby Brown International. One

:09:34. > :09:38.

:09:38. > :09:44.thing is certain - people don't like its current name.'s I think

:09:44. > :09:50.they could call it something more sensible, after somebody famous.

:09:50. > :10:00.is on Teesside, so that is what it should be. A I would prefer it to

:10:00. > :10:02.

:10:02. > :10:05.go back to their original name, Teesside Airport. It is Teesside.

:10:05. > :10:08.The name was originally changed from Teesside after pressure from

:10:08. > :10:11.flight operator BMI Baby. But it pulled out of the airport some

:10:11. > :10:15.years ago. Managers here say they are open to a change, but the new

:10:15. > :10:25.name would have to be relevant to the area it covers. And deliver

:10:25. > :10:25.

:10:25. > :10:28.real benefits in terms of increased business.

:10:28. > :10:31.The head of Northumbria Police has agreed to review the way the force

:10:31. > :10:34.handled a case involving a judge and her pet dogs. Judge Beatrice

:10:34. > :10:37.Bolton was arrested after claims her German Shepherd attacked and

:10:37. > :10:41.bit a passer-by near her home in Rothbury in Northumberland. Both

:10:41. > :10:42.her dogs have been seized. The force is looking into concerns

:10:42. > :10:45.about the way the case was investigated.

:10:45. > :10:48.An electricity company says it will reimburse residents after a power

:10:48. > :10:52.surge caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to household goods

:10:52. > :10:55.in the North Tyne valley. As we reported in Look North last

:10:55. > :10:57.week, the surge caused havoc for people who live in the Kielder area,

:10:57. > :11:00.damaging more than 250 appliances including boilers and washing

:11:00. > :11:10.machines. Energy firm NEDL has not accepted responsibility, but says

:11:10. > :11:13.

:11:13. > :11:19.it will reimburse residents anyway. Accommodation for 1000 it matter

:11:19. > :11:22.Umbria students are to be built in Gateshead. It is part of a 150

:11:22. > :11:27.million development scheme for the town centre and is being described

:11:27. > :11:33.as one of the biggest regeneration schemes in the UK. Other plans for

:11:33. > :11:36.the development include cafes, bars, restaurants and a possible hotel.

:11:36. > :11:40.It's their second visit to the Great Yorkshire Show in five years

:11:40. > :11:42.and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall seemed to enjoy it just

:11:42. > :11:47.as much second time round. They stayed longer than planned and

:11:47. > :11:53.shook hundreds of hands, as Cathy Killick reports.

:11:53. > :11:58.The visit began with a little girl and some roses. One for him, and a

:11:58. > :12:03.bunch for her. It was a calm start to what became a whirlwind. The

:12:03. > :12:08.crowds gathered everywhere the couples went. More flowers,

:12:08. > :12:15.buttonholes that found their way into the Royal lapels. It was a

:12:15. > :12:20.delight to meet them. Could not have been better. In the food all,

:12:20. > :12:30.plenty of delicious samples were on hand, but it was plied that took

:12:30. > :12:31.

:12:31. > :12:37.the Prince's fancy. It was a nice surprise. He was interested in the

:12:37. > :12:44.game pie. The taste of that. Blackout in the sunshine, and

:12:44. > :12:50.getting from A to B became a walkabout. The Duchess surprised

:12:50. > :12:57.that three teenage girls who told me she had very soft hands. Dg Lord

:12:57. > :13:07.Laird was? Yes. What did she say to you? Shears me what the favourite

:13:07. > :13:07.

:13:08. > :13:16.part of the day was and I said the horses. -- she asked me. And she

:13:16. > :13:23.had soft hands? Yes. The Royal couple care deeply about rural life.

:13:23. > :13:28.The launch a fund last year to raise money for rural projects.

:13:28. > :13:34.There are few things as magical as the deals. And the villagers that

:13:34. > :13:42.for such an important part of them. But I know that life is hard into

:13:42. > :13:47.many places, very hard for the farmers who live and work in these

:13:47. > :13:55.places. The show is a time for farmers to forget the hard times

:13:55. > :14:02.and celebrate their successes. They left a 45 minutes late, leaving

:14:02. > :14:06.smiles in their wake. Coming up next, the apprentices who

:14:06. > :14:16.don't need any help from Sir Alan Sugar. And how hip hop has provided

:14:16. > :14:22.

:14:22. > :14:25.an escape from the dole for these Now, despite the efforts of Sir

:14:25. > :14:27.Alan Sugar, you might normally think of apprentices in terms of

:14:28. > :14:30.industrial or construction work. But the North York Moors has just

:14:30. > :14:40.been named as one of the country's top apprenticeship providers. And

:14:40. > :14:45.

:14:45. > :14:48.it's planning to recruit more over this summer. Michelle Lyons reports.

:14:48. > :14:51.It is a far cry from those city slickers in London. Being an

:14:51. > :14:55.apprentice on the North York Moors has a much more tranquil air about

:14:55. > :14:57.it. The only thing that gets fired here are the guns. With university

:14:57. > :15:02.fees on the increase and job opportunities at a low, these

:15:02. > :15:11.people have opted to learn on the job. And who can blame them with

:15:11. > :15:17.views like this? It is lovely and peaceful. It is nice to be out here.

:15:17. > :15:20.The city is too hectic. National Park has been recognised

:15:20. > :15:26.in the list of the top 100 apprenticeship schemes in the

:15:26. > :15:29.country. Just a few young people are taken on each year. We get to

:15:29. > :15:33.do some work that we never would do normally, with things tightening up.

:15:33. > :15:37.We get to pass our skills on. They get to know the ethos of the

:15:37. > :15:41.National Park. Dry-stone walling is just one trade being taught. The

:15:41. > :15:51.apprentices learn many more practical skills. Advanced first

:15:51. > :15:51.

:15:51. > :15:54.aid, tree-felling, pesticide spray. And unlike the popular BBC One show,

:15:54. > :16:04.these apprentices are all confident they will be hired after their

:16:04. > :16:08.

:16:08. > :16:11.training ends. Do not miss it, it is on tonight.

:16:11. > :16:14.Now, the second of our films produced by Look North's Step Up

:16:14. > :16:18.trainee reporters. 11 of them, from all walks of life, and from all

:16:18. > :16:21.over the north, joined us recently here at the BBC to have a go at

:16:21. > :16:24.news broadcasting. In this report, they investigate just one of the

:16:24. > :16:33.new and creative ways people have found to make a living in these

:16:33. > :16:38.difficult economic times. Jessica Waugh has the story. Despite being

:16:38. > :16:41.relatively hidden, the north-east hip-hop scene is fully thriving.

:16:41. > :16:44.And some, such as this Geordie rapper, have even managed to hip-

:16:44. > :16:50.hop their way off the dole. I collaborate with the local

:16:50. > :16:58.community. I work as a community musician to deliver workshops,

:16:58. > :17:02.encouraging people to see another side of hip-hop culture. There are

:17:02. > :17:07.lots of ways you can make a career of being a DJ. It has opened up a

:17:07. > :17:17.network of opportunities for me and for other people in the community.

:17:17. > :17:18.

:17:19. > :17:26.I am a time traveller. I am a hip- hop MC from Newcastle. I make my

:17:26. > :17:31.living out of break dancing. And I am a DJ in Newcastle. I recently

:17:31. > :17:41.performed at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. They might be making a

:17:41. > :17:41.

:17:42. > :17:48.living out of hip-hop, but others are not finding it so easy. Please

:17:48. > :17:55.give us some money, because I am brogue, I want to get off the dole.

:17:55. > :17:59.But they remain optimistic. reckon we will be able to rap our

:17:59. > :18:09.way off the dole. We are going to put a lot more work in over the

:18:09. > :18:10.

:18:10. > :18:18.next few years. It is definitely going to work. I think it is good.

:18:18. > :18:22.They are OK but I am probably old- fashioned - I don't like hip-hop.

:18:22. > :18:32.didn't see why they cannot do it. They should get in touch with Simon

:18:32. > :18:36.

:18:36. > :18:45.Cowell. Help us get off the dole! Shall we try to do some ramp? No,

:18:45. > :18:47.let's not. Football is back.

:18:47. > :18:49.Newcastle don't get their pre- season campaign underway until

:18:49. > :18:55.Friday at Darlington, but Sunderland start tonight. They

:18:55. > :18:58.travel to York City for a friendly. Craig Gardner is the only one of

:18:58. > :19:01.the club's new signings to be named in the squad. It means new keeper

:19:01. > :19:05.Keiren Westwood will have to wait to make his debut, and he credits

:19:05. > :19:08.his former club Carlisle United with giving him a chance to make it

:19:08. > :19:12.in the Premier League. He'd been tracked by Sunderland for

:19:12. > :19:14.well over a season, and now Keiran Westwood is making himself at home

:19:14. > :19:17.on Wearside. A free transfer from Coventry, the 26-year-old has

:19:17. > :19:20.worked his way up from the Conference to the Premier League,

:19:20. > :19:29.and it's been a long journey. have worked quite hard to get her I

:19:29. > :19:35.am. I was at man City Athan of his 19. It is a key committee that did

:19:35. > :19:37.not need. I have a hunger and desire to do better.

:19:37. > :19:40.The Republic of Ireland international contemplated joining

:19:40. > :19:44.the police force before the Cumbrians came calling in 2004. Now

:19:44. > :19:46.he'll go head to head with Simon Mingolet for the chance to wear the

:19:46. > :19:54.number one shirt at Sunderland, with Craig Gordon currently working

:19:54. > :19:57.his way back from knee surgery. They have three goalkeepers or

:19:57. > :20:02.capable of playing, and this team is no different. I will battle for

:20:02. > :20:05.the shirt and hopefully, come out on top.

:20:05. > :20:08.Westwood is just one of nine signings made by Steve Bruce over

:20:08. > :20:11.the summer, but only Craig Gardner will be given a run out against

:20:11. > :20:14.York City tonight. The midfielder was Birmingham's top scorer last

:20:14. > :20:17.season and it is likely he'll fill the void left from Jordan

:20:17. > :20:24.Henderson's big money move to Liverpool. Money which, one former

:20:24. > :20:32.Black Cat says, has been well spent. I think he has invested the money

:20:32. > :20:36.very well. Some quality players being Broughton. -- are being

:20:36. > :20:42.brought them. It is great for any manager to a track that calibre of

:20:42. > :20:45.player to the North East. Great Britain swimmer Jo Jackson is
