:00:04. > :00:14.North. In the headlines tonight: Smoked out. The illegal tab houses

:00:14. > :00:14.

:00:14. > :00:21.where counterfeit cigarettes are sold even to young children.

:00:21. > :00:24.tax on everything, I have actually got a packet in my hand now. Blown

:00:24. > :00:29.away. Locals learn the biggest wind farm in England could be built on

:00:29. > :00:32.the their doorstep. Holy Cow! It's Batman live in Newcastle! But

:00:32. > :00:35.where's Robin? Find out later in the programme. And from bats to

:00:35. > :00:38.birds. Young ospreys hatched at Kielder meet the media at their

:00:38. > :00:41.weigh in. In sport, in the football season hasn't even started and

:00:41. > :00:46.Sunderland already have injury worries. And could this young man

:00:46. > :00:56.be an Open champion of the future? We meet the Newcastle teenager

:00:56. > :01:01.

:01:01. > :01:04.Cheap cigarettes, smuggled into the country by criminal gangs, are

:01:04. > :01:09.being sold from private homes in our region, to children as young as

:01:09. > :01:14.seven. Tab houses as they're known sell illegal cigarettes and tobacco

:01:14. > :01:23.at half the price of legitimate shops. Look North has learned that

:01:23. > :01:29.50 of these houses are currently operating in Middlesbrough alone.

:01:29. > :01:33.Everyone knows where the tab houses are. Even children. Cigarettes are

:01:33. > :01:43.often sold individually so they can afford them. One by one, they come

:01:43. > :01:45.

:01:45. > :01:55.and go. We've seen children as young as seven or eight it would

:01:55. > :01:55.

:01:55. > :02:01.appear. They are certainly of lower secondary school age. Many are 13

:02:01. > :02:05.or 14 which is definitely younger than those legally allowed to buy

:02:05. > :02:07.cigarettes. This isn't holidaymakers looking to make extra

:02:07. > :02:09.money. It's organised criminal gangs making them in factories and

:02:09. > :02:19.transporting them in huge containers around the country. Then

:02:19. > :02:29.they are broken down and sold from private homes known as tab houses.

:02:29. > :02:29.

:02:29. > :02:33.Hello! Customs! Open the door! in Middlesbrough and the

:02:33. > :02:39.authorities say they know of 50 tab houses selling illegal cigarettes.

:02:39. > :02:44.It is no longer a secret, many people now freely admit buying them.

:02:44. > :02:49.I buy them all the time, how can you not with everything going up.

:02:49. > :02:58.With the tax on everything, I have actually got a packet in my hand

:02:58. > :03:03.now. Thank you very much. They are dirty, horrible, disgusting. Before,

:03:03. > :03:06.they used to be worth it but now they are not. And there's a reason

:03:06. > :03:09.they taste so bad. The are made from waste tobacco and tests have

:03:09. > :03:12.shown they can contain rat poison, battery acid, wood and dead flies.

:03:12. > :03:21.A recent seizure of cigarettes in Middlesbrough contained a

:03:21. > :03:25.staggering 130 per cent more tar than the usual ones. Illegal

:03:25. > :03:28.cigarettes are seen as a safe option for criminal gangs. If

:03:28. > :03:38.caught, the penalties are not as severe as drug dealing, but the

:03:38. > :03:42.

:03:42. > :03:48.trade it is as lucrative. It can seem a very low-risk business. The

:03:48. > :03:51.share of the market is falling but it is still a serious problem.

:03:51. > :03:54.of all smokers die as a result of their habit. Now there's concern

:03:54. > :04:03.that cheap illegal cigarettes are getting the next generation of

:04:03. > :04:06.smokers hooked. Electricity giant EON has promised to pay out 11.5

:04:06. > :04:10.million to local people, if plans for the biggest wind farm in

:04:10. > :04:13.England are given the go-ahead. The company wants to erect up to 45

:04:13. > :04:17.wind turbines, in an area of County Durham that straddles the A1

:04:17. > :04:21.motorway near Newton Aycliffe. Nearly half a million pounds would

:04:21. > :04:24.be paid into a community fund every year for up to 25 years, if the

:04:24. > :04:34.scheme is approved. Despite this incentive, many locals are opposed

:04:34. > :04:39.

:04:39. > :04:44.to the plans. It really is a huge site. You need to imagine giant

:04:44. > :04:50.wind turbines straddling the motorway here and stretching off

:04:50. > :04:54.out into the distance over there. The good news is it is lots of

:04:54. > :05:01.green energy but the bad news is if you live near by now you might not

:05:01. > :05:07.be so keen. This man's position is there is a house up for sale and

:05:07. > :05:14.now there is a plan for giant wind turbines. We have heard it could

:05:14. > :05:18.knock 30% off the house price. We need that to be substantiated. We

:05:18. > :05:23.need to find buyers who want to live in a lovely village like this

:05:23. > :05:29.but do not mind not having a pub and do not mind having the largest

:05:29. > :05:35.wind farm in the country on their doorstep! He lives on the doorstep

:05:35. > :05:42.of the proposed site. Some farmers have agreed to the turbines on

:05:42. > :05:49.their land, yes, the accept there are concerns over visual impact but

:05:49. > :05:55.the energy company would also put cash into local villages. There is

:05:55. > :06:00.top of 400,000 coming into the local community in the area. That

:06:00. > :06:07.must be a massive bonus. These new wind turbines will be similar in

:06:07. > :06:11.height to those over there. EON says it might build them in one

:06:11. > :06:20.tight cluster but then again they might build them in small pockets

:06:20. > :06:26.and spread them around this site. We do need more wind farms for

:06:26. > :06:32.renewable energy. We need wind farms whenever they are appropriate.

:06:32. > :06:37.Some may think we just have too many wind farms. If we want the

:06:37. > :06:46.landscape to contain more than just wind farms, we are getting into

:06:46. > :06:52.saturation point with them. To have them just a kilometre away from

:06:52. > :06:56.build up areas is in the wrong place. I spoke to people today who

:06:57. > :07:02.said they can see it is a good thing, green energy, they just do

:07:02. > :07:07.not want it dominating the view. Before this site is transformed

:07:07. > :07:13.there is a lot of work to do. It will probably be a couple of years

:07:13. > :07:22.yet before we see any wind turbines are arriving at this site in County

:07:22. > :07:28.Durham. An inquest will open tomorrow into the death of a doctor

:07:28. > :07:33.who died in a diving accident of the Northumbrian coast. She had

:07:33. > :07:37.worked as a medical adviser for the Health and Safety Executive for 20

:07:37. > :07:44.years. Today her sporting friends and colleagues in the medical

:07:44. > :07:48.profession paid tribute to the women Basie was at real inspiration.

:07:48. > :07:54.They say in the end it is not the years in your life that count but

:07:54. > :07:58.the life then you years, if that is the case Ruth Fletcher's life was a

:07:58. > :08:06.huge success. She lived life to the cool and as a doctor helped many

:08:06. > :08:12.others. She was world champion at the quadrangle on, running, cycling,

:08:12. > :08:21.swimming and kayaking. She was a very talented sportswoman and it

:08:21. > :08:28.was how she would inspire others around her to join in. She was 60

:08:28. > :08:35.and from stocks would, after diving of this coast she surfaced

:08:35. > :08:41.unconscious and died. She will be sadly missed but I believe she will

:08:41. > :08:47.never be forgotten. investigation into her death is

:08:47. > :08:53.under way and an inquest is due to open tomorrow. There are many ways

:08:53. > :08:58.you can go about finding a job, scouring the situations vacant

:08:58. > :09:06.column, sending off you're curriculum VT or or simply knocking

:09:06. > :09:15.on doors. This man decided to stand on a roundabout in Sunderland. Most

:09:15. > :09:19.people picked their CV on paper but this man White is on a placard. He

:09:19. > :09:24.hoped that someone passing this roundabout in Sunderland would like

:09:24. > :09:32.what they see and offered him a job. He may know a thing or two, his

:09:32. > :09:39.last job was for call centre plus advising the unemployed. I advised

:09:39. > :09:45.people to do this. The pub I was crazy. I said, I may be crazy, but

:09:45. > :09:52.I am trying to get myself noticed so it did get a bit cold towards

:09:52. > :09:59.the end of the day but needs must. He has spent the last 18 months

:09:59. > :10:03.sending off CVs in the regular way, he has had a few interviews but no

:10:03. > :10:12.job. By standing at the side of the road he has had a few insults but

:10:12. > :10:22.also a couple of potential leads. have had offers of sales job leads

:10:22. > :10:30.

:10:30. > :10:35.but not in my usual type of work. If I inspire other people that his

:10:35. > :10:43.gate. Apart from the odd encouraging beep from a passing

:10:43. > :10:46.motorist this could be a discouraging business of for Liam.

:10:47. > :10:51.His partner is about to lose her job in a few months' time and if

:10:51. > :10:57.she does not get something else soon he may encourage her to join

:10:57. > :11:04.him here. Still to come, the locals who raised hundreds of thousands of

:11:04. > :11:10.pounds to buy their local. And Batman the stage show goes on tour.

:11:10. > :11:20.The shower clouds have been working overtime today. Plenty more to come

:11:20. > :11:21.

:11:21. > :11:26.in the next 24 hours. I will have the latest shortly. We are often

:11:26. > :11:33.told the future for pups is a bleak one as the prospect of closure

:11:33. > :11:40.hovers over many of them. There seems to be an appetite for local

:11:40. > :11:47.people to take-off their local -- takeover their local. We met a

:11:47. > :11:51.bunch of people who managed to buy villas in just three weeks. This is

:11:51. > :11:58.a picture perfect North Yorkshire village. It will be even better if

:11:58. > :12:05.the local pub reopens. Residents have got together 300,000 to do

:12:05. > :12:11.just that. If it does, it will be only the country's 5th community

:12:11. > :12:16.pub. There has been fantastic support in terms of money, ideas

:12:16. > :12:23.and enthusiasm. We had a meeting in the village hall to bring people

:12:23. > :12:29.up-to-date and over 100 people came. The pub needs another 50,000 to be

:12:29. > :12:34.ready for a Christmas opening, but is it really a good idea? Last year

:12:34. > :12:41.1,500 pubs closed across the country. We are currently using 25

:12:41. > :12:45.every week. But this pub will have benefits others do not, it will

:12:45. > :12:55.open debt fee and investors are not looking for a return, merely for

:12:55. > :13:06.

:13:06. > :13:11.the pup to become the hub of their When the pub gets up and running,

:13:11. > :13:16.this public house could see what it will be like. This pub has been

:13:16. > :13:22.community on for a year and smashed its turnover target of 120,000.

:13:22. > :13:28.What advice would they give a new venture? You have got to promote

:13:28. > :13:32.yourself and offer a service that people find welcoming and friendly.

:13:32. > :13:36.They will come back for that service. You have to be everything

:13:36. > :13:42.to all people and offer them something they cannot get at home -

:13:42. > :13:50.socialising. If that lesson has learned in Carlton, the heart of

:13:50. > :13:53.the village in the start to beat again. -- may start. What a great

:13:53. > :13:59.idea. By day he is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire philanthropist. By

:13:59. > :14:02.night he is Batman. With his trusty sidekick, Robin, he's coming to

:14:02. > :14:06.Tyneside and the dynamic duo star in a spectacular stage show at

:14:06. > :14:09.Newcastle Arena. Our entertainment reporter has been behind the scenes

:14:09. > :14:19.of this comic book caper and she meets the actor from Wearside whose

:14:19. > :14:25.

:14:25. > :14:35.Robin is in danger of upstaging Batman. Prepared to be transported

:14:35. > :14:42.

:14:43. > :14:52.to God than city. They will see something they have never seen

:14:52. > :14:56.before. This is what you have been waiting for! The death of Batman.

:14:56. > :15:03.We have a Batman show but from the very beginning I said it had to

:15:03. > :15:08.have had very good story. It is the origin of Robin. Besides that, we

:15:08. > :15:14.have stunt sun fights, flying and pyrotechnics. We have all the sort

:15:14. > :15:20.of thing you would expect from a Batman story. This show is called

:15:20. > :15:24.Batman lives but it is all about Robin - that is good for you.

:15:24. > :15:30.it is good for me, I get to go through this story as a young boy

:15:30. > :15:40.and then become Robin. Bruce Wayne takes on his young boy. He finds

:15:40. > :15:47.out that he is Batman. He said this, he wants to fight with them. He is

:15:47. > :15:54.very stubborn and turns into Robin with their help of Alfred. It would

:15:54. > :16:03.not have worked if you're called Dec! No, not really. Now to the

:16:03. > :16:08.Batcave. Batman has something to show you - this is the bat Mobile.

:16:09. > :16:17.It was specially designed by a Formula One car design legend -

:16:17. > :16:23.Gordon Murray. It is a real car. It is very aerodynamic. If it had a

:16:23. > :16:33.real engine, it would go at 120 miles an hour on the ceiling. The

:16:33. > :16:34.

:16:34. > :16:43.ceiling is not the limit. That man! You need to get out of here, it is

:16:43. > :16:47.a trap. -- Batman. It is a theatrical 3D experience created by

:16:47. > :16:53.one of the world's top stage designers. This is one of my

:16:53. > :17:03.favourite moments. We are creating the face of the joker out of his

:17:03. > :17:06.

:17:06. > :17:12.people. The teeth are made out of acrobats. This is just one scene.

:17:12. > :17:18.Your brain must have been exploding with ideas for the show. We knew it

:17:18. > :17:28.was incredibly important that the audience were given a event after

:17:28. > :17:28.

:17:28. > :17:33.event. We wanted to banish boredom. What about the caped crusaders!

:17:33. > :17:43.Will Robin Steel the show or will the joke could get the last laugh?

:17:43. > :17:45.

:17:45. > :17:54.Join in next week to find out. channel! I used to love all that.

:17:54. > :18:00.The old TV series was wonderful. The films were very dark. I liked

:18:00. > :18:09.the more ridiculous television programme. Shall we get on with

:18:09. > :18:13.sport? Shane Ferguson has not gone on the

:18:13. > :18:17.tour to the USA and the Sunderland's tour to Germany has

:18:17. > :18:21.not got off to the best of starts. Defender John O'Shea is coming home

:18:21. > :18:26.after being ruled out of the remainder of the tour through

:18:26. > :18:36.injury. The 30-year-old who signed from Manchester United just two

:18:36. > :18:37.

:18:37. > :18:39.weeks ago tweaked a muscle during his debut for the club on Sunday.

:18:39. > :18:41.After Darren Clarke's win in the British Open at the weekend, golf

:18:41. > :18:44.is definitely the sport of the moment. And while the Northern

:18:44. > :18:46.Irishman was wowing the crowds at Sandwich, a Newcastle teenager was

:18:46. > :18:48.doing the same at the under sixteens equivalent. 15-year-old

:18:48. > :18:58.Jack Hermeston is only the third boy from the north to win the

:18:58. > :19:03.

:19:03. > :19:09.prestigious McGregor Trophy. Jack Hermeston is simply the best. He

:19:09. > :19:13.proved this on their South Moor Golf Club in County Durham. The 15-

:19:13. > :19:18.year-old won one of the biggest events of its kind in the world.

:19:18. > :19:24.The under 16 England Boys' Open. People come from all round the

:19:24. > :19:30.world for this so I was definitely really pleased. Jack plays off plus

:19:30. > :19:36.one and is renowned for his putting. His secret of success is simple.

:19:36. > :19:44.I have always had natural ability but nowadays they say it is about

:19:44. > :19:48.99 % practice. He started playing when he was four. They reckon he is

:19:48. > :19:54.the best young golfer they have ever had. He has the potential to

:19:54. > :19:58.go all the way. He saw Tom Lewis playing the Open Championship. Jack

:19:58. > :20:05.has five years to go and there is no reason as to why he should not

:20:05. > :20:15.be in the same position. His Kadir looks familiar but it is not Rory

:20:15. > :20:16.

:20:17. > :20:22.McIlroy. -- his caddie. It is 15- year-old Liam Shanley. He always

:20:23. > :20:26.know what club to give me. I want to play in them majors. I have

:20:26. > :20:35.watched people when the majors, like Darren Clarke in the last few

:20:35. > :20:44.days. Jack is so young he can defend his title next year.

:20:44. > :20:49.One to watch! Durham's cricketers are on -- in action tonight. The

:20:49. > :20:58.game could give useful pointers in what they might be a begins next

:20:58. > :21:08.month in the quarter-finals of the Twenty20. Durham lost Jim mustard

:21:08. > :21:09.

:21:09. > :21:14.46. Durham at 100 for a one off 16 overs.

:21:14. > :21:20.Time for Country File. It has been a historic day for forest rangers

:21:20. > :21:24.at Kielder in Northumberland. They met two of their new est residents.

:21:24. > :21:32.There the second clutch of osprey chicks to hatch in the forest this

:21:32. > :21:37.year. Kielder is unique in England. The trouble with ospreys is there

:21:37. > :21:41.not sociable. This pair nested at the top of a 50 ft spruce in the

:21:41. > :21:46.middle of nowhere. It was the job of the forest ranger to climb up

:21:46. > :21:50.there and find out how many had successfully hatch. Mum fled the

:21:50. > :21:56.nest when she saw us coming and watched from a far as the

:21:56. > :22:02.youngsters were Lord to the ground for a full health check and to be

:22:02. > :22:08.rings for the future. -- they were lowered into the ground. A birds

:22:08. > :22:13.are very placid. They are in great condition. They should do fine.

:22:13. > :22:18.They are very good birds. A his only his second was prepared to

:22:18. > :22:22.breed at Kielder. The first pair had been nesting here for four

:22:22. > :22:27.years. There was a disappointment when two of the fledglings died

:22:27. > :22:33.during the storms. The discovery that two healthy chicks had

:22:33. > :22:38.survived was welcome news. It is fantastic. With the first pair a

:22:38. > :22:43.few years ago and now this pair, it looks like a in the future we will

:22:43. > :22:48.get more pairs in Northumberland as a whole. It is unlikely these birds

:22:48. > :22:51.will be photographed here again. They will head south to Africa at

:22:51. > :22:56.end of September and it is thought unlikely they will come back to

:22:56. > :23:02.their breeding grounds. We can follow their progress. When it

:23:02. > :23:06.comes back to Britain from Africa, it might be seen somewhere in

:23:06. > :23:12.England or Scotland and with that colouring on the, we have a good

:23:12. > :23:18.chance of recognising it. The good news is we hope others will fall

:23:18. > :23:25.these breeding pairs here to Kielder Northumberland. -- follow.

:23:25. > :23:32.A couple of months ago we were told the other mass -- Ness there was

:23:32. > :23:38.washed out. Talking about bad weather and, here he is. There is

:23:38. > :23:45.more bad weather on the way. We have more heavy rain on the way as

:23:45. > :23:47.we head through the next few days. The next 24 hours will see most of

:23:47. > :23:51.The next 24 hours will see most of the rain. There will be thunder and

:23:51. > :23:59.lightning as well. It is a messy pressure chart through the rest of

:23:59. > :24:04.the week. By the tail-end of the week, the showers are less of a

:24:04. > :24:09.problem but by then we have a cold northerly winds. We lose some of

:24:09. > :24:15.the showers and we lose some of the warmth as well as things cool down

:24:15. > :24:20.later in the week. Meantime, there is a Met Office warning - a yellow

:24:20. > :24:25.warning for rain tonight so there could be potential problems because

:24:25. > :24:29.they are ahead the outbreaks of rain around. Some of them will

:24:29. > :24:35.become enhanced overnight. Across the Pennines and into North

:24:35. > :24:40.Yorkshire, that's where we are most at risk. Heavy and prolonged

:24:40. > :24:50.downpours. Many places will see the showers. Parts of Cumbria will

:24:50. > :24:56.escape the showers. Lows of 11 Celsius. Reasonably mild but many

:24:56. > :25:00.of us will see their heavy showers with the odd rumble of thunder as

:25:00. > :25:07.well. The Met of his warnings extend into tomorrow. Not a great

:25:08. > :25:11.deal changes, more rain for many of us. Up over the North Pennines and
