:00:10. > :00:12.Welcome to Friday's Look North. Tonight, calls for a quick
:00:12. > :00:15.investigation into the arrest and suspension of Cleveland's top two
:00:15. > :00:18.police officers. After three days of questions, the force reveals
:00:18. > :00:22.who's now running operations. We've lost two top people from the
:00:22. > :00:24.force. We are hurting. That doesn't affect the way we all do the job.
:00:24. > :00:31.The growing problem of post- traumatic stress among soldiers and
:00:31. > :00:35.the domestic violence it leads to. I am here at the river with the
:00:35. > :00:38.biggest cargo ship which has ever sailed into the Port of Tyne.
:00:38. > :00:43.And senior service - how old commandos have once again responded
:00:43. > :00:46.to the call of duty, but like you've never seen before.
:00:46. > :00:49.In sport, May seems like only yesterday, but the new Football
:00:49. > :00:52.League season kicks off tomorrow. And we'll hear from the managers,
:00:52. > :01:02.including this man who wants to add a promotion campaign to Wembley
:01:02. > :01:09.
:01:09. > :01:12.Three days after the two top officers at Cleveland Police were
:01:12. > :01:19.arrested and suspended, the force has revealed how it's running
:01:19. > :01:21.operations without its senior figures. Sean Price and Derek
:01:21. > :01:24.Bonnard were questioned on Wednesday over allegations of
:01:24. > :01:31.corruption and bailed. Tonight, one Teesside MP called for a quick
:01:31. > :01:37.investigation. Mary Askew has been following developments and is in
:01:37. > :01:41.Middlesbrough tonight. We have been asking this question for three days
:01:41. > :01:45.but who is in charge tonight? interesting thing is that nobody is
:01:45. > :01:49.allowed to stand in as a Chief Constable when there is already a
:01:50. > :01:54.Chief Constable on the pay roll. Kevan's chief, Sean Price, is
:01:54. > :02:02.getting paid quite handsomely by the force. So the police a body has
:02:02. > :02:05.got round this to light by promoting acting, Assistant Chief
:02:05. > :02:09.Constable Dave Pickard and bringing in people behind him to help him
:02:09. > :02:15.out. It is little surprise that the pace of Broady has been at pains to
:02:15. > :02:21.say that amid the turmoil the force is still in safe hands.
:02:21. > :02:24.I have absolute confidence in the team, David Pickard, where Shaun
:02:24. > :02:29.White and Ann Hall, will lead the team through this quite difficult
:02:29. > :02:33.situation we are in, probably unprecedented situation. People
:02:33. > :02:43.need to know out there that, despite all the turmoil, despite
:02:43. > :02:43.
:02:43. > :02:46.all the terrible things that appear to be happening the 1500 or so of
:02:46. > :02:50.police people out there doing the job has not changed and their
:02:50. > :02:55.commitment has not changed. We have lost two top people from the force.
:02:55. > :03:00.We are hurting. That doesn't affect the way we all do the job.
:03:00. > :03:04.All this is costing money, isn't it? It is, and thankfully it is
:03:04. > :03:09.money that Cleveland Police has not got. Even before this all kicked
:03:09. > :03:13.off, the force was Hamid to make cuts to the tune of 70 million to
:03:13. > :03:18.make its books balance. With those -- for those of fear with long
:03:18. > :03:22.memories will remember Operation Lancet, another investigation into
:03:22. > :03:27.corruption more than a decade ago. It cost millions of pounds and it
:03:27. > :03:30.is the prospect of another Bill like that that is causing concern.
:03:30. > :03:34.We know it is a difficult time. Police budgets are under pressure.
:03:34. > :03:38.It is important at this operation doesn't get out of hand and does
:03:38. > :03:42.not start to look like Operation Lancet which cost millions of
:03:42. > :03:47.pounds and took far too long. Every pound spent on this investigation
:03:47. > :03:51.is a pound they should be spent on von unpoliced intimate Teessider
:03:51. > :03:56.safer place. Everybody would agree we won this over and done with as
:03:56. > :03:59.soon as possible. Everybody is waiting to see whether or not
:03:59. > :04:05.prevent's top two police officers appeal against their suspension,
:04:05. > :04:08.and they have until Wednesday to do that.
:04:08. > :04:11.Is enough being done to help soldiers traumatised by their time
:04:11. > :04:14.in battle when they get home? Linda Adams thinks not. She was attacked
:04:14. > :04:17.by her husband Dave after he served in Iraq. One night, he caused
:04:17. > :04:20.35,000 worth of damage to their home at Bedale in North Yorkshire.
:04:20. > :04:28.A recent study suggests domestic violence by former soldiers is
:04:28. > :04:34.increasing. More on that in a moment, but first Linda's story.
:04:34. > :04:44.She says those returning from duty need more help.
:04:44. > :04:44.
:04:44. > :04:52.He went to Iraq in 2003, came back in 2004. September of that year, we
:04:52. > :04:56.were due to go out with friends and when I returned, I am was met by a
:04:57. > :05:06.hint saying you can't go home, the police have been called and
:05:06. > :05:13.basically he had obliterated our home. And then Christmassy, --
:05:13. > :05:20.Christmas Eve, he actually got physical with me and punched me. So
:05:20. > :05:25.I had facial damage and teeth knocked out. It was a shock. And
:05:26. > :05:30.the thing is, I didn't hit him back, I didn't throw anything, I didn't
:05:30. > :05:38.go for him. I just looked him straight in the face and said, you
:05:38. > :05:41.should not have done that. And I turned my back and walked away. I
:05:41. > :05:46.have only just recently, in the last few months, found that some of
:05:46. > :05:54.the things that he had seen and that had happened. Seen children
:05:54. > :05:58.blown up. That must be enough to get to anybody, with the loss of
:05:58. > :06:02.two or like army personnel hard. Some psychiatrists and people have
:06:02. > :06:09.been to see him, but I don't think they understood exactly what was
:06:09. > :06:17.wrong. Every time there has been an incident and I have had to call the
:06:17. > :06:21.police and had him taken away, it has been hard. But on the end of
:06:21. > :06:26.the restatement, I have always put, it is not punishment that he needs,
:06:26. > :06:31.it is mental health. We have got a long struggle ahead of us. But he
:06:31. > :06:35.has given me so much in the past. I am not prepared to back down or
:06:35. > :06:38.give up on him now. That was Linda's experience, and it
:06:38. > :06:40.seems she's not alone. A new report from the National Association of
:06:40. > :06:44.Probation Officers shows more than 8,000 ex-members of the military
:06:44. > :06:50.are in prison. And half of veterans given community service suffer from
:06:50. > :06:53.post-traumatic stress disorder. Well, the Ministry of Defence says
:06:53. > :06:55.it operates a range of measures to tackle mental health issues among
:06:55. > :06:57.the armed forces. And according to the Royal British Legion,
:06:57. > :07:07.psychological problems among ex- service people are becoming more
:07:07. > :07:08.
:07:08. > :07:13.common. We are seeing considerably more people coming to us with
:07:13. > :07:15.really complex needs now, as a charity, and those needs are often
:07:15. > :07:20.aggravated by psychological problems, things like sleep
:07:20. > :07:24.disorder, alcohol and drug disorder, perhaps anxiety order person. But
:07:24. > :07:28.also we are seeing an increasing number of people who are showing
:07:28. > :07:32.signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.
:07:32. > :07:36.A body has been found in undergrowth in Tynemouth. The body,
:07:36. > :07:39.which is believed to be of a man in his 50s, was found in Priors Haven
:07:39. > :07:42.off Priors Road last night. The police are treating the death as
:07:42. > :07:45.unexplained. The brother of Sunderland
:07:45. > :07:50.footballer Titus Bramble has been jailed for four and a half years
:07:50. > :07:53.after being convicted of rape. Tesfaye Bramble, who's 31, attacked
:07:53. > :07:57.a 19-year-old woman at the Vermont Hotel in Newcastle following a
:07:57. > :08:01.night out. Around 100 were evacuated from
:08:01. > :08:04.their homes after a gas explosion in Hartlepool this lunchtime. Fire
:08:04. > :08:09.crews were called to the derelict house in Sheriff Street at around
:08:09. > :08:11.1pm this lunchtime. The explosion happened after they arrived. A 50-
:08:11. > :08:20.metre cordon was placed around the property and three neighbouring
:08:20. > :08:24.streets were closed. One woman is being treated in hospital.
:08:24. > :08:28.Upon arrival, we were talking to residents in the street and,
:08:28. > :08:32.unfortunately, a gas explosion occurred and one of the residence
:08:32. > :08:35.was covered in glass from the explosion. She was treated by the
:08:35. > :08:39.ambulance on scene and taken away for precautionary treatment in
:08:39. > :08:43.hospital. It is more than the length of two
:08:43. > :08:46.football pitches and is the biggest cargo vessel ever to berth at the
:08:46. > :08:53.Port of Tyne. The Alam Penting arrived here last night with his
:08:53. > :08:56.huge load of, guess what, coal. Damian O'Neill is at the Port of
:08:56. > :09:02.Tyne. Welcome to a really lovely evening
:09:02. > :09:07.down here at the river. There she is. A very impressive -- impressive
:09:07. > :09:12.sight. Fresh from her voyage from America. All day, the cranes have
:09:12. > :09:21.been unloading the Skacel cargo of coal, which if memory serves me
:09:21. > :09:26.correctly, is something we used to produce here and reasonable amounts.
:09:26. > :09:33.It represents a significant milestone for the Port of Tyne.
:09:33. > :09:38.She is the Alam Penting and at 229 metres long, well over two football
:09:38. > :09:44.pitches, the biggest ever cargo vessel to berth at the Port of Tyne.
:09:44. > :09:47.Those with a sense of irony or notes her cargo, 75,000 tonnes of
:09:47. > :09:52.Wood from New Orleans. It is the biggest volume of a single cargo
:09:52. > :09:56.ever handled on this river, coal that is bound for power stations in
:09:56. > :10:00.Yorkshire. It requires about 40 ft depth of water to get any year,
:10:00. > :10:03.another record for the Tyne for stock but it is not just for this
:10:03. > :10:10.reason they have been investing millions in dredging the river
:10:10. > :10:16.recently. It now means the Port of Tyne is capable of handling 80% of
:10:16. > :10:19.the world's carrier fleet. The Tyne saw some of the biggest ships in
:10:19. > :10:29.our maritime history. This one might not stir the soul, but the
:10:29. > :10:30.
:10:30. > :10:34.port believes thinking ever-bigger will secure its future.
:10:34. > :10:38.This is the best you you're going to get off this vessel. But if you
:10:38. > :10:42.want to see her in full effect, she is expected to leave her birth,
:10:42. > :10:49.Sale back down the river and out to see some time on Monday afternoon.
:10:49. > :10:54.So if you are in the area and you get the chance, as well worth it.
:10:54. > :10:58.Plenty still to come tonight. Jo Jackson on her Olympic dreams, plus
:10:58. > :11:05.the artist determined to continue painting despite losing the use of
:11:05. > :11:08.his hands. And in the forecast, the weather's
:11:08. > :11:17.timings are all wrong. Gorgeous at the moment but a wet weekend coming
:11:17. > :11:20.Come riposte but problems with a tin are well-documented. Millions
:11:20. > :11:25.of pounds has been spent in the county on flood prevention in
:11:25. > :11:28.places like Carlyle and West Cumbria. Today, a 5.5 million
:11:28. > :11:35.scheme to protect hundreds of homes and businesses in Penrith was
:11:35. > :11:40.officially unveiled. A new wetland nature reserve. A
:11:40. > :11:44.haven for wildlife and people. But it is really a huge reservoir which
:11:44. > :11:50.will hold a lot of excess water when the Cumbrian rain does its
:11:50. > :11:55.worst. In 2005, there was serious flooding in parts of town. It is
:11:55. > :12:00.hoped that will not now be repeated. We can never say that budding will
:12:00. > :12:04.not happen, but we will reduce the risk in Penrith significantly.
:12:04. > :12:12.Behind me you can see the fun storage reservoir we have great it
:12:12. > :12:17.up river. Throughout the town, we have repaired and replaced 675
:12:17. > :12:21.metres worth of coal but through the town centre itself. People were
:12:21. > :12:25.out enjoying the Reserve today. is absolutely brilliant. We are
:12:25. > :12:29.helping the people of Penrith not to be flooded and at the same time
:12:29. > :12:32.we are making this fantastic nature reserve, so people in Penrith are
:12:32. > :12:41.winning twice over. A quarter is great as long enough as it is not
:12:41. > :12:44.damaging your home. Be determined artist left unable to
:12:44. > :12:49.use his hands as it battles multiple sclerosis is holding his
:12:49. > :12:53.first exhibition after learning to paint again with his mouth. As a
:12:53. > :12:57.teenager, Norman Hirst studied at art college block -- before working
:12:57. > :13:01.as a professional photographer. Now, after just three years of mouth
:13:01. > :13:04.painted, the 65-year-old boss man work is going on display at
:13:04. > :13:08.Victoria Lodge Care home in Sunderland.
:13:08. > :13:16.Hundreds and thousands of tiny brushstrokes, the remarkable and
:13:16. > :13:19.patient wait -- work of Norman Hurst. I have the paintings I did
:13:19. > :13:24.when I produce my hands on the wall over there. Once they would have
:13:24. > :13:33.all been painted by hand. But MS made that impossible. The on the
:13:33. > :13:39.other wall are paintings using a brush in my mouth. Sir it hasn't
:13:39. > :13:43.stopped him. There has always been a longing to be able to do it again.
:13:43. > :13:48.So when the opportunity came, I thought I would have a go with my
:13:48. > :13:52.mouth. A after a highly creative career that included taking some of
:13:52. > :13:57.the last photographs of Donald Campbell before his historic Blue
:13:57. > :14:06.boat crash, this is now Norman's way of expressing himself. It is
:14:06. > :14:10.very difficult to hold a brush steady enough, so I could quite
:14:10. > :14:16.easily ruin the painting. paintings are going on display at a
:14:16. > :14:20.care home on Friday, 26th August. think it will provide an
:14:21. > :14:27.inspiration to people in Norman's situation. If you have MS or any
:14:27. > :14:32.other illness, you still have the ability to create something. Other
:14:32. > :14:42.people can get satisfaction and even inspiration to do it
:14:42. > :14:46.
:14:46. > :14:50.themselves. Then it has done the Another thing incredible is the
:14:50. > :14:55.start of the Football League season! It seems like just
:14:55. > :14:59.yesterday. Let's start in the Championship. For Middlesbrough it
:14:59. > :15:03.is the earliest they have ever kicked off. They finished last
:15:03. > :15:09.season strongly after flirting with relegation before Tony Mowbray
:15:09. > :15:19.arrived. With 13 fewer players, the fans can be excused for feeling a
:15:19. > :15:24.
:15:24. > :15:30.Middlesbrough finished last season on a high. They won their last four
:15:30. > :15:35.games. Fans are expecting great things this season, but a baker's
:15:35. > :15:39.dozen of players have left. The latest was Julio Arca. The
:15:39. > :15:48.financial reality means Tony Mowbray face is what he calls a
:15:48. > :15:51.very competitive and unpredictable league with a leaning, young squad.
:15:51. > :15:57.We hope to be key -- we hold the key the fitness as good as it is,
:15:57. > :16:05.add one or two players as we go along, promotion is not a word we
:16:05. > :16:10.need to talk about. We will get a feel-good factor at the Riverside
:16:10. > :16:15.Stadium. Tony Mowbray is delighted that Marvin Emnes has extended his
:16:15. > :16:21.contract. He hopes that others will do the same. He is a real talent,
:16:21. > :16:24.with the ball at his speech he can do things other players cannot. We
:16:24. > :16:28.are delighted he sees this as the place where he wants to continue
:16:28. > :16:38.his development. Middlesbrough will kick off with a game against
:16:38. > :16:43.
:16:43. > :16:48.Portsmouth, at team that was in A solid mid-table finish in League
:16:48. > :16:52.One only tells half the story of Carlisle's last campaign. There was
:16:52. > :16:58.the Wembley victory in the Trophy final. No wonder there is a
:16:58. > :17:04.shortage -- no wonder there is no shortage of optimism. I am really
:17:04. > :17:12.optimistic. In the shadow of their stadium, the team make preparations,
:17:12. > :17:19.watched over by their manager who is quietly confident. We have some
:17:19. > :17:25.good players, players we not out, players we hope will give us more
:17:25. > :17:28.strength in depth. They will give us the consistency we are looking
:17:29. > :17:34.for to make us got little better than we did last year. That was not
:17:34. > :17:40.bad, but with these additions hopefully we have a bit more
:17:40. > :17:44.strength in depth. Outside of Greg Abbott's control, a series of
:17:44. > :17:50.costly break-ins, with a thief making off with diesel fuel and
:17:50. > :17:53.equipment. The value of it is a concern to the club, but also a lot
:17:53. > :17:58.more work for us to do at the beginning of the season, Saturday
:17:58. > :18:04.is almost upon us and we could do without this work. The money it
:18:04. > :18:07.will cost to process the claim, it makes it almost impossible. How can
:18:08. > :18:16.we buy players and spend money Updating the facility when we face
:18:16. > :18:20.these problems? Hartlepool warmed up for the new season with a
:18:20. > :18:26.midweek testimonial match for Ritchie Humphries. It is another
:18:26. > :18:32.veteran who is exciting the fans. Nearly 6,000 have snapped up season
:18:32. > :18:36.tickets at just 100. Nobby Solano signed in the summer, he has played
:18:36. > :18:43.in the Premier League, Champions League, and captained his country
:18:43. > :18:49.in World Cup qualifiers. I am very lucky, I did not get any injuries
:18:49. > :18:55.during pre-season. I am fine. first team coach believes he has a
:18:55. > :18:59.team that will surprise many. The former Newcastle winger will be a
:18:59. > :19:03.major influence. He brings fantastic experience and technical
:19:03. > :19:08.ability and has also been a big influence on our players. Anyone
:19:08. > :19:13.who has been in the game and get the chance to play with someone
:19:13. > :19:23.like him get a great opportunity. He is a very talented player. On
:19:23. > :19:25.
:19:25. > :19:29.many levels it is fantastic. All the action on your local BBC
:19:29. > :19:34.radio station. Elsewhere, there has been a lot of new faces at the
:19:34. > :19:41.Stadium of Light, so much so that Steve Bruce is now at women -- is
:19:41. > :19:47.now trimming his squad, with Steed Malbranque leaving. George
:19:48. > :19:53.McCartney is in talks with another club. There is two other boys who
:19:53. > :20:03.need to go and play. We will see what develops. There is a long way
:20:03. > :20:07.to go. Certainly, with some of them, we are listening to offers. Players
:20:07. > :20:12.need to play and some of our players will be restricted.
:20:12. > :20:22.cricket, Yorkshire drew their four- day game with Hampshire. Michael
:20:22. > :20:25.Carberry was unbeaten on 300. Durham who take on Hampshire drew
:20:25. > :20:32.their match with Nottinghamshire after Paul Collingwood signed a
:20:32. > :20:37.three-year deal. That ends speculation about Paul
:20:37. > :20:41.Collingwood's future. If the London Olympics had taken place just after
:20:41. > :20:49.Beijing, then swimmer Jo Jackson would have been a shoo-in for a
:20:49. > :20:55.wedding -- for a medal. But just as she was hitting the heights of her
:20:55. > :21:00.career in 2009, she had problems with her health. She is however
:21:00. > :21:07.determined to keep her dream alive. It was at the Beijing Olympics that
:21:07. > :21:14.Jo Jackson burst onto the world stage. Her bronze medal was no
:21:14. > :21:23.flash-in-the-pan. The year after, she won three freestyle medals. She
:21:23. > :21:33.smashed that two world records. Brawn was the biggest meat with
:21:33. > :21:33.
:21:33. > :21:38.medals I have done. -- Rome was the biggest meet. I came off so happy.
:21:38. > :21:46.Back home, the family followed the success, and they supported the
:21:46. > :21:52.swimmer when her future came under threat. About two years ago, the
:21:53. > :22:02.asthma started to deteriorate. She had problems with her breathing she
:22:02. > :22:09.could not shift will stop training was not possible. Her ribs kept
:22:09. > :22:19.popping out. She could not train at all. It was frustrating because in
:22:19. > :22:19.
:22:19. > :22:24.her magic to the good -- in her mind she wanted to continue.
:22:24. > :22:32.there a point where she thought about quitting? There was, and it
