:00:03. > :00:07.Welcome to Monday's Look North. Tonight: Forging a thousand new

:00:07. > :00:11.steel jobs on Teesside. It's hoped the blast furnace, mothballed 18

:00:11. > :00:15.months ago, will be up and running within months.

:00:15. > :00:24.Calls for a crossing on a busy dual carriageway to be closed, after the

:00:24. > :00:28.death of a teenage boy. We do not want this to happen to anyone else.

:00:28. > :00:34.I cannot sit here and let that happen. I cannot bring him back, I

:00:34. > :00:38.wish I could. He has been robbed of his life.

:00:38. > :00:41."I'm sorry." - The man who shot dead a planning officer in full

:00:41. > :00:45.view of the media 20 years ago apologises for the first time.

:00:45. > :00:47.And he's almost done it - 3,000 miles in just a hundred days. We've

:00:48. > :00:50.the latest on the Geordie running across America.

:00:51. > :00:55.In sport, one of Man United's rising stars is set to join

:00:55. > :01:05.Newcastle's French revolution. And injury time misery for two of

:01:05. > :01:10.

:01:10. > :01:14.our clubs as the football league season kicks off.

:01:14. > :01:16.When the blast furnace closed - with the loss of 1,600 jobs - the

:01:16. > :01:21.people of Teesside thought their proud history of steel-making was

:01:21. > :01:23.at an end. But now, 18 months on, recruitment's underway for a

:01:23. > :01:29.thousand workers to re-start steel production at the moth-balled

:01:29. > :01:32.furnace in Redcar. The Thai company, SSI, took over the one-time Corus

:01:32. > :01:37.plant earlier this year. It had been shut down by the previous

:01:37. > :01:47.owner, Tata. Well, our business correspondent, Ian Reeve, is near

:01:47. > :01:48.

:01:48. > :01:53.the steel plant tonight. Ian. More than two years ago, it seemed

:01:53. > :01:57.unlikely we would ever reach this day. It is a day that many workers

:01:57. > :02:02.hope is just the first step in a process of them getting their old

:02:02. > :02:12.jobs back. This man spent 36 years in the

:02:12. > :02:13.

:02:13. > :02:16.steel industry at the very heart of the blast furnace. They always say

:02:16. > :02:24.that the workers here are the best in the world. Will we are the best

:02:24. > :02:29.that what we do, we are still the best steel workers, the best I am

:02:29. > :02:39.workers -- the best that I run makers. No-one can take that away

:02:39. > :02:41.

:02:41. > :02:46.from us. Make craves work. -- Michael.

:02:46. > :02:54.was hard work but it was enjoyable. I was walking with a good set of

:02:54. > :03:01.lads. He is not alone. SSI is and is abating 10,000 applications for

:03:01. > :03:07.1,000 posts. A team of 35 will deal with them online. Not all of them

:03:07. > :03:10.are four former workers. Steelworkers -- steel working is a

:03:10. > :03:15.very precise science and we would be foolish not to bring back people

:03:15. > :03:25.who work here before. But we also want to have a balance off of older

:03:25. > :03:34.workers and new recruits. This is a new company, inventing itself and

:03:34. > :03:39.laying down a new culture. We have to start again. It has been a busy

:03:39. > :03:45.time but, every day, people are making a massive effort to get us

:03:45. > :03:51.back to that point where we are making steel again. The company has

:03:51. > :03:58.told me that 440 people have made at applications and 2,400 have

:03:58. > :04:08.expressed an interest in the business. A some staff could be in

:04:08. > :04:09.

:04:09. > :04:13.place by September. It is a new start for an old industry.

:04:13. > :04:16.Brandon Nugent died on a busy dual carriageway back in March. The 13-

:04:16. > :04:19.year-old was hit by a car as he crossed a public bridleway in the

:04:19. > :04:22.Gilesgate area of Durham City. Today his family called for the

:04:22. > :04:25.path he was using to be closed. Meanwhile, Durham County Council

:04:25. > :04:27.says it's looking into improving safety on that stretch of road, as

:04:27. > :04:37.Adele Robinson reports. 13-year old Brandon Nugent was tragically

:04:37. > :04:38.

:04:38. > :04:42.killed just four months ago, not far from his home in Durham.

:04:42. > :04:52.death has left a huge hole in his family but has given them a new

:04:52. > :04:55.

:04:55. > :05:00.purpose: To get rid of the road crossing he died on.

:05:00. > :05:07.It is madness that a crossing would be on a 70 miles per road. If you

:05:07. > :05:12.are going to have something like this, surely the people who are in

:05:12. > :05:14.charge should make sure it is up to standard. It is not good enough.

:05:14. > :05:20.And today, with the support of Brandon's family, the council

:05:21. > :05:24.launched a public consultation. key times of the day, the volume of

:05:24. > :05:28.traffic makes it difficult for pedestrians to get across, so we

:05:28. > :05:38.recognise that something has to be done. We're looking at a whole

:05:38. > :05:43.range of options. Brandon was making his way along this path with

:05:43. > :05:48.friends. He tried to cross to the middle but was hit by a passing car.

:05:48. > :05:56.He died instantly. His family say they want this historic bridleway

:05:56. > :06:01.completely closed. I cannot bring Brandon back, I wish I could. He

:06:01. > :06:05.has been robbed of his life. If they do something about it, it will

:06:05. > :06:09.not take the pain away but it will be constructive. But the bridle

:06:09. > :06:11.path is an ancient right of way, which means red tape could hinder

:06:11. > :06:13.any possible closure. The consultation ends in September.

:06:13. > :06:22.Brandon's family, in the meantime, have launched a petition to close

:06:22. > :06:26.the crossing and, they say, do justice to his memory. He is not

:06:26. > :06:32.going to be remembered as the poor boy who was killed, he will be the

:06:32. > :06:40.boy who inspired to change and made that road saver for other people. -

:06:40. > :06:42.- safer. It was a killing that shocked the

:06:42. > :06:45.country, a planning officer murdered in a televised crime. Well,

:06:45. > :06:48.20 years on, Albert Dryden has said he's sorry. The former Consett

:06:48. > :06:51.steelworker shot Harry Collinson as the council tried to demolish the

:06:51. > :06:54.bungalow Dryden had built without permission. But some are suggesting

:06:54. > :07:04.his remorse isn't genuine and he's more concerned with an upcoming

:07:04. > :07:04.

:07:05. > :07:10.parole hearing. Damian O'Neil reports.

:07:10. > :07:18.The murder is well enough known. When the council arrived to

:07:18. > :07:23.demolish his bungalow, Dryden killed him and wounded two others.

:07:23. > :07:27.Now he says he is deeply sorry. With a parole hearing due, some

:07:27. > :07:36.people are sceptical about -- sceptical about the timing and his

:07:36. > :07:46.sincerity. He needs to be assessed by a psychiatrist. It needs to be

:07:46. > :07:49.

:07:49. > :07:54.totally sincere and profound. At the end, he expresses that he is

:07:54. > :07:58.sorry. That is not good enough. think he does not mean a word of it.

:07:58. > :08:06.He has never expressed any remorse in 20 years. He never said he was

:08:06. > :08:14.sorry for what he did. He has shot at people before. He shot and

:08:14. > :08:24.killed my brother. All we dried in knows whether he

:08:24. > :08:32.

:08:32. > :08:36.was -- only the man himself knows whether he was sorry.

:08:36. > :08:39.A Teesside mother has paid tribute to her son who died after being hit

:08:39. > :08:42.by a car. James Dylan Robinson was knocked down in the Portrack area

:08:42. > :08:44.of Stockton on Friday evening. He'd been to an ice-cream van moments

:08:44. > :08:50.beforehand. Dylan's mother described him as a loving little

:08:50. > :08:53.boy, her soul mate and her strength. Hundreds of people gathered in

:08:53. > :08:56.Carlisle this lunchtime, to celebrate the life of a Carlisle

:08:56. > :08:59.teenager who died while on holiday in Bulgaria. Tom McNeill, who was

:08:59. > :09:02.17, is believed to have fallen from a balcony while he was sunbathing.

:09:02. > :09:08.He was a pupil at the Richard Rose Central Academy, where students

:09:08. > :09:11.have been signing a book of condolence.

:09:11. > :09:13.And plans are being made to bring home a former Northumbria

:09:13. > :09:16.University student, who shot dead the polar bear which attacked and

:09:16. > :09:18.killed another student in Norway. 29-year-old Michael Reid, who now

:09:18. > :09:21.lives in Southampton, was president of the students' union at

:09:21. > :09:24.Northumbria University between 2005 and 2007. He was one of the leaders

:09:24. > :09:31.of the British Schools expedition group, attacked in their campsite

:09:31. > :09:33.on a Norwegian glacier last week. A Tyneside care home for disabled

:09:33. > :09:37.people is at the centre of an investigation into alleged bullying

:09:37. > :09:40.and mistreatment of residents. Several incidents have been

:09:40. > :09:42.reported to Gateshead Council's Adult Care Services. And now all

:09:42. > :09:52.staff and family members of the privately-run home are being

:09:52. > :09:53.

:09:53. > :10:02.interviewed as part of the inquiry. Sharuna Sagar has more details. It

:10:02. > :10:06.is a ref age -- a refuge for the physically and mentally disabled.

:10:06. > :10:10.Allegations of malpractice have put the staff under scrutiny. An

:10:10. > :10:15.investigation was launched after family members approach social

:10:15. > :10:19.services were claims of bullying and abuse. In one case, a man with

:10:19. > :10:29.dementia was made to face the wall for several lagers after watching

:10:29. > :10:32.television without permission. -- for several hours. Four Seasons

:10:32. > :10:34.Health care, which runs the home, won't comment on those claims but

:10:34. > :10:38.they did say, "At this time, the allegations have not been

:10:38. > :10:41.substantiated or refuted. The safety and wellbeing of our

:10:41. > :10:45.residents is priority and we take any allegation of inappropriate

:10:45. > :10:48.conduct most seriously." This is not the first time complaints have

:10:48. > :10:53.been made. In 2008 an inspection rated standards of care as poor but

:10:53. > :10:55.in 2009 things had improved and it was rated as good. Gateshead

:10:55. > :11:05.Council say they are carrying out a full, comprehensive enquiry and

:11:05. > :11:08.hope to conclude it quickly. You're watching Look North. A look

:11:08. > :11:11.back at the first weekend of the new football league season coming

:11:11. > :11:15.up, plus the results of July's weather competition, and: Run

:11:15. > :11:23.Geordie Run. The North East man just hours away from a record

:11:24. > :11:33.breaking run across America. And in the forecast, a fine day

:11:34. > :11:35.

:11:35. > :11:38.tomorrow, but all the wet weather is coming back.

:11:38. > :11:41.Now, their very location makes them difficult to police, so maybe it's

:11:41. > :11:44.not surprising thefts from farms have risen sharply. Figures from

:11:44. > :11:47.the industry's main insurer show That, in the North East and

:11:47. > :11:50.Yorkshire, rural crime is up 12% with more than 9 million worth of

:11:50. > :11:53.thefts in the last two years. In Cumbria and the North West, it's up

:11:53. > :12:01.a staggering 73%, with more than 2.5 million of property stolen.

:12:01. > :12:06.Alison Freeman sent us this report from one Cumbrian farm. Rustling is

:12:06. > :12:14.the kind of crime you would expect to see in an old Western. Sadly, it

:12:14. > :12:21.is on the rise. Just last week, Andrew lost sheep a valued at

:12:21. > :12:27.around 8,000 from his farm. All of our money is in the field. It is

:12:27. > :12:33.scattered everywhere. We trust everybody, really, the farmers. We

:12:33. > :12:37.do not see it all every day. believes his she will be sold on

:12:37. > :12:43.for meet at a fraction of the price they were worth to him as breeding

:12:43. > :12:46.stock. If you are buying meat, you need to know where it has come from.

:12:46. > :12:54.Always look for the farm assurance mark and make sure that the product

:12:54. > :13:00.you are buying is reliable. Agricultural crime has risen

:13:00. > :13:04.nationally by around 17% between 2009 and 2010. In Cumbria, that

:13:04. > :13:14.figure has almost doubled since 2008, with the number of reported

:13:14. > :13:14.

:13:14. > :13:22.crimes each year rising from 142- 264. That has cost the industry in

:13:22. > :13:31.the north-west around 2.6 million. Thefts of Cumbrian farms are

:13:31. > :13:35.surpassed only by thefts of quad bikes. A lot of people in rural

:13:35. > :13:42.communities have a trusting nature. Their working environment means

:13:42. > :13:47.that, quite often, they are very inclined to leave the key in the

:13:47. > :13:55.ignition. The advice is to take whatever measures you can. There

:13:55. > :13:58.are lots of things you can do at a low cost. The difficulty is that it

:13:58. > :14:07.is impossible to keep sheep and cattle under lock and key so they

:14:07. > :14:10.have to rely on the honesty of others.

:14:10. > :14:12.A Scarborough guest house owner has been jailed for spying and

:14:13. > :14:15.recording couples in their rooms. Paul Williams, who runs the Sandsea

:14:15. > :14:17.guest house in Devonshire Drive, was sentenced to 18 weeks after

:14:18. > :14:20.admitting two charges under the Sexual Offences Act. Scarborough

:14:20. > :14:30.Magistrates said the offences were so serious that "only a custodial

:14:30. > :14:33.sentence can be justified". A church in North Yorkshire has had

:14:33. > :14:36.to suspend services for the first time in more than a thousand years

:14:36. > :14:39.because of bats' droppings. Members of St Hilda's Church at Ellerburn,

:14:39. > :14:41.near Pickering, have spent 10,000 trying to encourage the bats into

:14:41. > :14:44.specially-built alternative homes - but without success. They say St

:14:44. > :14:54.Hilda's may have to close for good unless permission is given to

:14:54. > :14:55.

:14:55. > :14:59.remove the bats from inside the church.

:14:59. > :15:02.It's an incredible achievement. And he's almost done it. Mark Allison,

:15:02. > :15:05.from County Durham is on the last of a hundred days running across

:15:05. > :15:08.the USA from California to New York. That's more than three thousand

:15:08. > :15:11.miles. He expects to finish about five o'clock in the morning our

:15:11. > :15:18.time. And it's all to raise money for two charities in the north, and

:15:18. > :15:25.in memory of his mother. Keith Akehurst reports. Mark described

:15:25. > :15:29.himself as an obese Geordie who loved football and bacon pies. On

:15:29. > :15:37.the first of May, he set out from California, just south of Los

:15:37. > :15:43.Angeles. He has run through the deserts of Nevard and through the

:15:43. > :15:48.Rocky Mountains. He has run through snow and temperatures up to 115

:15:48. > :15:58.degrees Fahrenheit. I am relieved that it is almost at an end and the

:15:58. > :15:59.

:15:59. > :16:02.finish line is in sight. Mark's body is feeling the toll of running

:16:03. > :16:07.more than a marathon every day for a hundred days but he's still found

:16:08. > :16:14.time to keep followers updated via the internet. It is extremely

:16:14. > :16:17.painful. Feet Mark used his life savings to pay for the trip, so

:16:17. > :16:22.that every penny he raises goes to the charities. So far the total's

:16:22. > :16:30.over 56,000. The hospice paid for my mutt -- cared for my mother and

:16:30. > :16:36.gave her a dignified end to her life. It is a wonderful charity.

:16:36. > :16:46.The Children's Foundation provides a great service for children across

:16:46. > :16:46.

:16:46. > :16:49.the region as well. He has lost quite a bit of weight.

:16:49. > :16:54.Mark used a personal trainer to prepare him. He expects to make the

:16:54. > :16:57.Atlantic ocean before midnight New York time. I have not seen a bath

:16:58. > :17:07.for hundreds of days. I have not seen a shower for three days, I

:17:08. > :17:08.

:17:08. > :17:15.think. What a fantastic achievement!

:17:15. > :17:25.Fingers crossed, I hope he think -- I hope he finishes it on time.

:17:25. > :17:26.

:17:26. > :17:30.There are easier ways to lose weight! Now - with the Premier

:17:30. > :17:35.League season just under five days away - our two clubs are both close

:17:35. > :17:37.to signing wingers. Derry City's James McClean has been having a

:17:37. > :17:40.medical at Sunderland, while Manchester United's rather better

:17:40. > :17:42.known Gabriel Obertan is expected to complete his move to St James's

:17:42. > :17:45.Park later this evening, following his medical. Obertan will be glad

:17:45. > :17:47.to have missed Newcastle's home friendly on Saturday against

:17:47. > :17:50.Fiorentina, which had to be abandoned after an hour because of

:17:50. > :17:53.torrential rain with the score goalless. Our three Football League

:17:53. > :17:55.clubs are already up and running, although none could manage an

:17:55. > :17:58.opening day win, with Middlesbrough and Hartlepool both conceding

:17:58. > :18:02.injury time equalisers. The good news for Boro is that midfielder

:18:02. > :18:04.Julio Arca, who's now a free agent, may be ready to sign a new deal at

:18:04. > :18:06.the club after all, and they're still taking to Belgium

:18:06. > :18:12.international midfielder Haris Faroun.

:18:12. > :18:17.With Middlesbrough fans getting used to watching players depart, it

:18:17. > :18:25.seemed appropriate that Portsmouth were the opening day would --

:18:25. > :18:35.visitors. They are another club where finances had been an issue.

:18:35. > :18:41.

:18:41. > :18:44.The Middlesbrough fans were singing in the rain. An old failing

:18:44. > :18:51.returned to haunt Tony Mowbray's men, though, when a combination of

:18:51. > :18:57.bad luck and poor concentration allowed this injury time equaliser.

:18:57. > :19:02.It is something for us to work on. The we are disappointed that we did

:19:02. > :19:11.not take Bronislaw Komorowski points. We have tough fixtures

:19:11. > :19:21.ahead. There is a tough game in the Carling Cup away from home midweek.

:19:21. > :19:21.

:19:21. > :19:23.-- al three points. Another team still bemoaning a late goal are

:19:23. > :19:27.Hartlepool United, who entertain Sheffield United in the Carling Cup

:19:27. > :19:29.tomorrow. Twice they took the lead at MK Dons - first through Adam

:19:29. > :19:32.Boyd's header. Luke Chadwick equalised for the home side. But

:19:32. > :19:35.Pools looked to have won it four minutes from time. Summer signings

:19:35. > :19:38.Nathan Luscombe and James Poole combining to make it 2-1. There was

:19:38. > :19:40.a hint of offside about the MK Dons injury time equaliser but Mick

:19:40. > :19:43.Wadsworth was pleased with the performance. Meanwhile Carlisle

:19:43. > :19:46.failed to show up against Notts County - metaphorically at least.

:19:46. > :19:49.The club got the wished for 6,000 crowd at Brunton Park but newly-

:19:49. > :19:51.promoted Notts County went in front albeit controversially. Veteran

:19:51. > :19:55.striker Lee Hughes, who'd appeared to barge over Peter Murphy crossed

:19:55. > :19:59.for his namesake Jeff Hughes to grab the first, a Francois Zoko own

:19:59. > :20:02.goal doubled the lead and Hughes completed the scoring. A Carlisle

:20:02. > :20:09.performance branded the worst in his time at the club by manager

:20:09. > :20:12.Greg Abbott. Mark Tulip, BBC Look North.

:20:12. > :20:15.Well last season they were battling relegation but the Newcastle

:20:15. > :20:19.Falcons have got their new campaign off to a flying start after winning

:20:19. > :20:22.the Premiership 7's series. In a repeat of the previous final,

:20:22. > :20:25.Newcastle were up against Saracen's at the Stoop, and last year's

:20:25. > :20:28.winners looked liked doing the double as they went into the break

:20:28. > :20:32.firmly in control. But spurred on by player of the tournament Luke

:20:32. > :20:35.Fielden, the Falcons fought back. After Fielden got them to within 3

:20:35. > :20:39.points of the holders, Alex Tait went over the line to score the

:20:39. > :20:49.decisive try. Newcastle went on to win by 31 points to 21 to claim the

:20:49. > :20:53.first major prize of the season. Durham's hopes of winning all three

:20:53. > :20:57.domestic cricket trophies came to an end on the south coast yesterday.

:20:57. > :21:07.This was only the second time in the eight-year history that they

:21:31. > :21:40.remains one of our big hopes for next year's Olympic Games. He

:21:40. > :21:48.produced another big leap of 8.30 metres. It was five centimetres
