:00:07. > :00:11.Hello and welcome to Thursday's Look North. Tonight: Arrested on

:00:11. > :00:14.suspicion of assault, the policeman shot and blinded by gunman Raoul

:00:14. > :00:21.Moat. The stolen taxi that crashed into

:00:21. > :00:27.15 cars a while an elderly passenger sat in the back seat.

:00:27. > :00:30.We visit the school with a 99% pass rate in the GCSE exams.

:00:30. > :00:35.And the Flood victim who is getting on a bike to help stop this

:00:35. > :00:39.happening again. In sport, Joey Barton mulls over a

:00:39. > :00:43.move to QPR, and can Newcastle drone Middlesbrough in the third

:00:43. > :00:53.round of the Carling Cup after Barrow win for the fifth to run in

:00:53. > :00:58.

:00:58. > :01:01.a row? -- can they joined David Rathband, the Northumbria

:01:01. > :01:06.Police officer who sprang to world wide attention following the Raoul

:01:06. > :01:09.Moat shootings, has been arrested on suspicion of support -- assault,

:01:09. > :01:13.following an alleged late-night incident at his home this week. A

:01:13. > :01:19.year ago he was shot and blinded by Raoul Moat, who then went on the

:01:19. > :01:24.run. David Rathband, an ordinary copper

:01:24. > :01:27.until one night in July last year. As he sat in his patrol car in

:01:27. > :01:32.Newcastle, the fugitive Raoul Moat crept up and blasted him with a

:01:32. > :01:37.shotgun. He says he did not expect to survive and he was left

:01:37. > :01:43.completely blind. I have still got the same circle of friends and I

:01:43. > :01:47.have obviously gained some people as a result of what happened.

:01:47. > :01:51.an understatement. In reality, he had turned himself from victim into

:01:51. > :01:56.he wrote, swearing that one day he would return to duty, and then

:01:56. > :02:01.launching a charity to raise money for a mother -- other emergency

:02:01. > :02:05.services personnel injured at work. Although he is on long-term sick

:02:05. > :02:10.leave, David Rathband remains an employee of Northumbria Police, so

:02:10. > :02:12.when they took a called just before midnight on Tuesday, reporting an

:02:12. > :02:16.assault, when they were given an address they knew who would find

:02:16. > :02:20.there. They also knew that because of David Rathband's prominence and

:02:20. > :02:24.place in the hearts of the British public, this would be an incredibly

:02:24. > :02:30.sensitive issue for them to deal with. All the force was so today

:02:30. > :02:32.was that officers were called to a residential address in

:02:32. > :02:37.Northumberland and that a 43-year- old man was arrested on suspicion

:02:38. > :02:41.of assault, and that inquiries are ongoing. The spokesperson for PC

:02:41. > :02:48.Rathband said no allegations had been made concerning his conduct

:02:48. > :02:50.and that his family had asked that their privacy be respected. A 14

:02:50. > :02:56.year-old youth faces dangerous driving charges after stealing a

:02:56. > :03:01.taxi and causing mayhem in a supermarket car-park.

:03:01. > :03:10.The taxi collided with 15 cars in the incident, which happened

:03:10. > :03:13.outside the Tesco store at Newton Aycliffe in Durham.

:03:13. > :03:16.For Newton Aycliffe taxi driver Trudie it was just a routine call,

:03:16. > :03:25.to pick up two elderly shoppers at the local Tesco's superstore and

:03:25. > :03:30.take them home. The customer got in the car. Her husband was taking the

:03:30. > :03:36.trolley back. I went to shut the boot and spoke to another taxi

:03:36. > :03:40.driver behind me. I turned around and the taxi was gone. A youth had

:03:40. > :03:45.jumped into the front seat. He sped off around his car park. The police

:03:45. > :03:49.say he collided with 15 cars, causing serious damage, and all

:03:49. > :03:54.this with an elderly woman passenger sat in the back seat.

:03:55. > :04:00.saw him hit a car and then I heard people screaming. He hit another

:04:00. > :04:07.car. I remember Rennie after the taxi. I did not know what to do.

:04:07. > :04:13.one was hurt in the incident but the stolen taxi is now a write-off.

:04:14. > :04:18.The damage he had done was unbelievable. The front wheels were

:04:18. > :04:28.bent in. Durham Police say a 14 year-old youth has been arrested in

:04:28. > :04:31.

:04:31. > :04:33.connection with the incident and The mother of murdered teenager

:04:33. > :04:37.Ashleigh Hall is to take legal action against four police forces

:04:37. > :04:39.who failed to apprehend her daughter's killer. Ashleigh was

:04:39. > :04:44.kidnapped, raped and murdered by registered sex offender Peter

:04:44. > :04:46.Chapman, after meeting him on Facebook. Her mother, Andrea, has

:04:46. > :04:49.now received two independent reports highlighting mistakes by

:04:49. > :04:55.the Merseyside force, and failures to track Chapman's car by the

:04:55. > :04:57.Cleveland, Durham and North Yorkshire forces.

:04:57. > :05:01.Northumbria Police have released pictures of a handbag which led to

:05:01. > :05:06.the discovery of a pensioner killed in her own home. Judith Richardson,

:05:06. > :05:10.77, was found dead in the hallway of her house in Hexham on Friday.

:05:10. > :05:12.She had been attacked with a hammer. Her shoulder bag was found in a bin

:05:12. > :05:16.in Newcastle earlier that day. Detectives have also released

:05:16. > :05:21.pictures of a hammer similar to the one found in an Aldi carrier bag in

:05:21. > :05:26.the street near her house. A man and a woman, aged 84 and 78, were

:05:26. > :05:33.arrested on Monday. They have been released on bail. It is thought

:05:33. > :05:39.robbery could have been the killer's motive.

:05:39. > :05:43.Robbery may well be a motive. That is a line of inquiry we are

:05:43. > :05:47.pursuing. We believe the handbag was stolen from the house in the

:05:47. > :05:51.Hexham area and whoever committed the murder took the hand back to

:05:52. > :05:54.Newcastle where they discarded it in a rubbish bin.

:05:54. > :05:57.SELLACOPS Police guarding the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria

:05:57. > :06:07.are to be allowed to carry guns. The Civil Nuclear Constabulary says

:06:07. > :06:08.

:06:08. > :06:11.it is stepping up its training to The wait is finally over for

:06:11. > :06:14.thousands of students across the North. The GCSE results came out

:06:15. > :06:18.today, and just under 70 per cent of students were awarded grade C

:06:18. > :06:24.and above. Adele Robinson has been to one school where they achieved a

:06:24. > :06:34.99% pass rate. Nervous faces and the sound of

:06:34. > :06:35.

:06:35. > :06:40.whipping envelopes... I got all A* grades. And a great day in English.

:06:40. > :06:45.For most here at Emmanuel College in Gateshead, it will be A-levels

:06:45. > :06:49.next and then university. I am going to go to sixth form and then

:06:49. > :06:58.go to university to study biology. Probably astrophysics or something

:06:59. > :07:02.like that, at university. But the prospect of the Hyatt tuition fees

:07:02. > :07:07.mean some are looking at other options. Why go to university and

:07:08. > :07:17.get a degree when I could just go and get a job straight away? It

:07:17. > :07:24.does put you off. A 3, 2, 1! billions were released, symbolic of

:07:24. > :07:29.the 99% pass rate here at the college, up like national rates for

:07:29. > :07:37.the 23rd year in a road. 69.8 % across the UK have achieved at

:07:37. > :07:42.least five grades A to grades C. Art exams becoming easier? There is

:07:42. > :07:46.a right time for looking at that question. The universities need to

:07:46. > :07:50.examine the exam papers and making that judgment, but the right time

:07:50. > :07:59.to do that is not now. Right now the students are celebrating what

:07:59. > :08:07.they have done. Also to celebrate their success here, 99 of these

:08:07. > :08:09.ice-creams were given out. Of course, behind the GCSE

:08:09. > :08:14.statistics today, there are countless stories of individual

:08:14. > :08:16.successes. As we have heard, many have scored star grades but many

:08:16. > :08:22.others have had a nail-biting day wondering whether their exam

:08:22. > :08:24.results are good enough to see them realise their dreams. Our political

:08:25. > :08:34.correspondent, Mark Denten, has spent the day with one student from

:08:35. > :08:36.

:08:36. > :08:42.County Durham. Toast made but not eaten.

:08:42. > :08:47.Butterflies in the tummy. GCSE results day. Laura wants to be a

:08:47. > :08:52.paramedic, but it is all about the grades. I am looking for or a C

:08:52. > :08:57.grades. I am hoping that I will get all C grades. I do not want any B

:08:57. > :09:05.grades. Law and her classmates are waiting for those crucial envelopes.

:09:05. > :09:11.-- Laura. I have done quite well. You got the great that you needed,

:09:11. > :09:16.the crucial secret? I did. When Europe looked more closely, she has

:09:16. > :09:23.not passed her maths, so will her Grace really be enough to get her

:09:23. > :09:28.into college? In the main hall, she meets a careers adviser. We leave

:09:28. > :09:32.them to have a long chat. What is effectively happening here is a

:09:32. > :09:36.giant jigsaw puzzle. Lots of students, lots of courses and an

:09:36. > :09:41.effort by the college to fit them altogether. But this year there is

:09:41. > :09:44.an additional piece of the jigsaw, money. This year the students will

:09:45. > :09:48.not get education maintenance allowance. The college is trying to

:09:48. > :09:52.bridge the gap through its own scheme but they still say the

:09:52. > :09:58.students will be put off. It is naive for anyone to think that the

:09:58. > :10:05.abolition of a DNA is not going to have an impact. -- the abolition of

:10:05. > :10:09.EMA. There is little evidence that EMA encouraged students to stay in

:10:09. > :10:16.education you would not have otherwise done so. There is other

:10:16. > :10:21.targeted support. How did she get on? She is in. I will be studying

:10:21. > :10:31.here for two years now. I feel relieved. One student, or one day,

:10:31. > :10:40.

:10:40. > :10:45.Still to come: Thursday's sports desk, plus... We talk to a man who

:10:45. > :10:51.has been in the headlines for the last 25 years.

:10:51. > :10:55.And the chances of Bank Holiday sunshine.

:10:55. > :10:58.Her home, like many others, was wrecked by floods in 2009. Now

:10:58. > :11:01.Jenny Benson from Cockermouth in Cumbria is taking part in a major

:11:01. > :11:04.charity event to raise cash for flood defences in the town. The

:11:04. > :11:10.work will cost 5 million and the local community needs to contribute

:11:10. > :11:14.300,000 towards the scheme. Jenny Benson's children love their new

:11:14. > :11:17.garden. Its new flood defence looks like any other wall. During the

:11:17. > :11:25.floods of 2009 it was very different, the garden and the

:11:25. > :11:30.ground floor of their home taken over by the River Derwent. It took

:11:30. > :11:34.nine months of work to make it habitable once more. Although

:11:34. > :11:39.Jenny's home is back to normal, she wants to help pay for even more

:11:39. > :11:49.flood defences in the town. So Jenny is doing a 40 mile sponsored

:11:49. > :11:50.

:11:50. > :11:53.bike race. The area has been defended but nothing would protect

:11:53. > :11:57.against 2009, but there is an opportunity now for flood defences

:11:57. > :12:01.for the rest of the town and it seems like a good way of giving

:12:01. > :12:05.back a lot of support we received from neighbours and people around

:12:05. > :12:11.the town. It seems like a good thing to do for Cockermouth in the

:12:11. > :12:15.future. The defences at the back of the house have been completed but

:12:15. > :12:18.more homes in the town are still vulnerable. The Environment Agency

:12:18. > :12:20.plans to spend around 5 million more on defences in Cockermouth.

:12:20. > :12:25.The community needs to raise 300,000 to get the remainder of

:12:25. > :12:28.the funding from the Government. 100,000 has already been

:12:28. > :12:38.contributed by the Cumbria Community Fund, which set up the

:12:38. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :12:47.ride Jenny is taking part in. was personally affected and the

:12:47. > :12:50.money she raises will help the group but it also shines a light

:12:50. > :12:55.and the valuable work this event has been raising money for local

:12:55. > :12:58.charities. During the ride Jenny will come across here. It is one of

:12:58. > :13:01.a number of flood damaged bridges to feature in the Jennings Rivers

:13:01. > :13:11.Ride. As part of the event, hundreds of cyclists will follow

:13:11. > :13:18.routes up to 80mph long. All the entrance fees paid will go to good

:13:18. > :13:21.causes across the county. The Hexham MP Guy Opperman has

:13:21. > :13:26.recovered from a brain tumour and is now walking the Hadrian's Wall

:13:26. > :13:29.trail. It is to raise money for the hospital which treated him. Mr

:13:29. > :13:32.Opperman collapsed at the House of Commons in April. He is now

:13:32. > :13:36.recuperating with a six-day hike and a series of public meetings en

:13:36. > :13:42.route. Adrian Pitches caught up with him at Newburn, alongside the

:13:42. > :13:44.River Tyne. Guy Opperman and friends putting

:13:44. > :13:48.their best foot forward along Hadrian's Way this morning. Mr

:13:48. > :13:51.Opperman is walking the 80mph route in six days, just 100 days after he

:13:51. > :14:01.collapsed at Westminster with a benign brain tumour that had to be

:14:01. > :14:02.

:14:02. > :14:07.surgically removed. Although I look absolutely fine now, it was scary

:14:07. > :14:11.at the time, and the NHS was wonderful. I was discharged in May

:14:11. > :14:14.and have been slowly working my way back to full fitness. I have been

:14:14. > :14:18.full-time for the last three or four weeks and I thought it would

:14:18. > :14:22.be a really good idea to use the time when Parliament is not sitting

:14:22. > :14:26.to come down here back to the constituency, made a lot of people

:14:26. > :14:29.but also support the local tourist business and the key tourist

:14:29. > :14:31.attraction for this area is Hadrian's Wall. Before setting off

:14:31. > :14:34.yesterday, he visited another hospital, the Freeman in Newcastle,

:14:34. > :14:41.to lend his support to the children's heart unit. But he is

:14:41. > :14:45.fundraising for two other institutions. I am supporting two

:14:45. > :14:52.particular charities, the National neurological Hospital in London,

:14:52. > :14:58.which saved my life. The National brain appeal. And locally, Tyne

:14:58. > :15:03.Dail Hospice, which does an amazing amount of work looking after people.

:15:03. > :15:07.We are raising several thousands of pounds. I already have pledges from

:15:07. > :15:12.several businesses. It is also a great chance to meet a lot of local

:15:12. > :15:16.people and along the way we are having a series of meetings, a

:15:16. > :15:24.public hall meetings every night. Is the Prime Minister keeping tags

:15:24. > :15:29.and your progress? -- keeping tabs on your progress? He has sent me a

:15:29. > :15:35.message and rang me up a couple of months ago as well. He is broadly

:15:35. > :15:41.supportive but has a few other things to worry about right now.

:15:41. > :15:44.Good luck. The Academy Award winning actress

:15:44. > :15:47.Vanessa Redgrave has been taking time off set to visit Durham

:15:47. > :15:50.Johnston School and to rename their drama studio. This summer, scenes

:15:50. > :15:53.for the new British comedy A Song For Marion are being filmed there.

:15:53. > :15:55.And today the star unveiled a dedication plaque for the newly

:15:55. > :15:58.named Redgrave Studio, honouring the school's links with the actress.

:15:58. > :16:08.She shared a joke about the theatre her father opened, which closed

:16:08. > :16:10.

:16:10. > :16:16.after ten years. It is a lovely plaque. It is the

:16:16. > :16:20.first Theatre Studio that I have ever had named after me. I am so

:16:20. > :16:27.glad it is in a school and I am deeply glad it is being Durham

:16:27. > :16:32.Johnston School. I want to say a big thank you to the school

:16:32. > :16:35.especially for having made it possible for us.

:16:35. > :16:38.Now for the last in our Headliners series, and it is the first of a

:16:38. > :16:42.two-part interview, because the gentleman in question has been in

:16:42. > :16:45.the headlines for the best part of the past 25 years! Sir John Hall is,

:16:45. > :16:47.of course, the man behind the Gateshead Metro Centre and he also

:16:47. > :16:49.revolutionised Newcastle United Football Club. Last year he was

:16:49. > :16:54.diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer, but he's looking good, at

:16:55. > :17:04.79. And he was in top form when I went to meet him at his home -

:17:05. > :17:05.

:17:05. > :17:10.Wynyard Hall, on Teesside. How are you? I am fine. The cancer

:17:10. > :17:17.is under control. The side effects from the drug affect me but I am

:17:17. > :17:24.still good. There are worst cancers. But I am working hard, looking

:17:24. > :17:31.forward to new projects. Looking forward to the team playing a game.

:17:31. > :17:37.Kevin Keegan era, that must have been the most enjoyable time?

:17:37. > :17:42.were moments, probably, but we will always remember. Hopefully they

:17:42. > :17:49.will be recaptured in the years to come. Kevin was looking to find us

:17:49. > :17:52.and we were looking to find Kevin. Nobody could motivate people as

:17:53. > :17:57.well as Kevin could. He got the best out of them and gave them the

:17:57. > :18:01.licence to play football. Had we won the league it would have given

:18:01. > :18:06.the club the big impetus. It was an exciting team and after that it did

:18:06. > :18:14.not work out to a degree and Kevin left and after that we had a

:18:14. > :18:22.succession of managers. Some who are would not even give a job again,

:18:22. > :18:25.some of them quite useless. The pundits have today tell us about

:18:25. > :18:28.football. They should ask the Geordie fans! The exception, of

:18:28. > :18:34.course, was Bobby Robson - who turned down Sir John's initial

:18:34. > :18:38.approach, to stay loyal to Barcelona. He did very well when he

:18:38. > :18:44.came but can you imagine when he was at the peak of his power and

:18:44. > :18:48.his marriage and skills? Imagine where we would have been -- the

:18:48. > :18:51.peak of his power and his management skills. And, no telling

:18:51. > :18:54.where the club might have been without Sir John. But four years

:18:54. > :19:02.later he made the break - selling his majority shareholding to Mike

:19:02. > :19:06.Ashley. We were local millionaires. There was a passion from the heart

:19:06. > :19:12.and we were investing in something we loved. And today that has gone.

:19:12. > :19:21.The moment Abramovich came in, in my view, it destroyed the game. I

:19:21. > :19:26.feel angry at time ask -- I feel angry at times about the way the

:19:26. > :19:30.press handled all this. He is an excellent businessman with a lot of

:19:30. > :19:39.money but I do not think he understood the Geordie mentality.

:19:39. > :19:44.We have been very close to the fans. At the end of the day it was him

:19:44. > :19:48.and them. It was repeated. I think he generally means well and I hope

:19:48. > :19:52.he can basically now decide what he is going to do an hour they get it

:19:52. > :19:55.right or move on. So that's Newcastle, but did you know he used

:19:55. > :20:03.to be a season ticket holder at Roker Park? Purely business, of

:20:03. > :20:11.course! I had two tickets, for Douglas and myself. We used to do

:20:11. > :20:16.go one week to Sunderland and the next week back to Newcastle. I am a

:20:16. > :20:23.Geordie and I was taken to Newcastle when I was eight. You can

:20:23. > :20:33.never get that out of your blood but I felt I had to do it, but my

:20:33. > :20:35.

:20:36. > :20:38.heart has always been north of the water.

:20:39. > :20:41.And there'll be more from Sir John tomorrow, including news of his

:20:41. > :20:44.plans for a major tourist attraction for Teesside. So he

:20:44. > :20:47.still watches Newcastle, who are in Carling Cup action tonight, Dawn?

:20:47. > :20:50.Let's start with the Carling Cup, and Carlisle United have missed out

:20:50. > :20:53.on a glamour tie after West Ham's surprise defeat at home to

:20:53. > :20:56.Aldershot last night. The League Two club will now host the

:20:56. > :20:58.Cumbrians in a delayed second round tie next Tuesday. Well, already

:20:58. > :21:01.through to Saturday's third round draw are in-form Middlesbrough.

:21:01. > :21:04.Mark Tulip rounds up the action. Hosts Peterborough had scored seven

:21:05. > :21:11.in their last home match but few teams are in as confident a mood as

:21:11. > :21:13.talent Joe Bennett set up the trusty right foot of Barry Robson
