:00:03. > :00:08.Hello and welcome to Wednesday's Look North. Tonight:
:00:08. > :00:11.We don't understand why he did it. The family of Michael Atherton
:00:11. > :00:14.react after the Durham shootings. The disabled man who says he wasn't
:00:14. > :00:16.allowed to board a bus in case his wheelchair blew up.
:00:16. > :00:20.I'm not bothered if Darlington Football Club goes bust, says the
:00:20. > :00:23.man who invested millions in the Quakers.
:00:24. > :00:28.It's a record. The Nissan car plant reveals it made more than 480,000
:00:28. > :00:36.vehicles last year. And how recycling our old Christmas
:00:36. > :00:39.trees can help prevent flooding in our communities.
:00:39. > :00:42.In sport, we will look ahead to Newcastle's clash with Manchester
:00:42. > :00:46.United. Can the Magpies end a 10 year wait for a win over the Reds?
:00:46. > :00:56.And we will meet Sunderland's super heroes, on the pitch, and off it as
:00:56. > :01:01.
:01:01. > :01:04.well! We do not understand why he did
:01:04. > :01:07.what he did. That was the reaction from the family of Michael Atherton
:01:07. > :01:11.today, three days after the horrific events at Horden in County
:01:12. > :01:14.Durham. Michael Atherton shot and killed his partner, Susan
:01:14. > :01:16.McGoldrick, her sister Alison Turnbull and her niece Tanya
:01:17. > :01:23.Turnbull, before taking his own life on New Year's Day. Family
:01:23. > :01:26.members have spoken of their devastation and disbelief.
:01:26. > :01:28.Meanwhile the Independent Police Complaints Commission said today it
:01:28. > :01:37.was committed to fully examining the issues around the granting of
:01:37. > :01:40.Mr Atherton's firearms licence and subsequent renewals. Our
:01:40. > :01:46.correspondent is live for us at Horden now. You saw some pretty
:01:46. > :01:50.heartfelt tributes from relatives today.
:01:50. > :01:56.Tonight we can show you the house where these awful events took place.
:01:56. > :02:01.This is a number nine Greenside Avenue and you can see the tributes.
:02:01. > :02:06.There are many with moving messages attached. Inside, the police are
:02:06. > :02:11.still working, and it is clear from talking with the neighbours just
:02:11. > :02:16.how well liked the family were. We have heard from the family today.
:02:16. > :02:23.We have heard from young Michael, a lad who has lost his mother and
:02:23. > :02:26.father. He is only 17. He said he has lost the best mother in the
:02:26. > :02:33.world and that he does not understand why his father would do
:02:33. > :02:37.anything like that. Michael was speaking on behalf of his sister.
:02:37. > :02:43.We know that she leapt from an upstairs room to escape the
:02:43. > :02:48.shootings on Sunday night. Today we heard from the family of the mother
:02:48. > :02:54.and daughter who died, Alison and Tangier. It was said that Alison
:02:54. > :03:00.was a fantastic mother and that the family are destroyed by the loss.
:03:00. > :03:06.Tanya was popular and gorgeous and was idolised, according to family
:03:06. > :03:09.tribute. We have also heard from the family of Michael Atherton. His
:03:09. > :03:13.parents were saying they could not understand why he would do
:03:13. > :03:15.something like this. As well as the family to be his
:03:15. > :03:20.come other people have been expressing grief as well, haven't
:03:20. > :03:24.they? A lot of people have been on the
:03:24. > :03:29.social Messaging site Facebook and there are many messages are on
:03:29. > :03:35.there. Some of them are from the family. One just read that they
:03:35. > :03:42.have had to take the chemist -- Christmas tree down. It is the
:03:42. > :03:46.mundane things that that really hit home when people have a loss like
:03:46. > :03:51.this so soon after Christmas. Today we have been in the town where
:03:51. > :03:55.Alison and Tangier are from and people were talking about what good
:03:55. > :04:04.people they were. There was one woman in a hairdresser's shop who
:04:04. > :04:10.spoke about them. I cannot get my head around it. It is so close to
:04:10. > :04:15.home and then to actually see the faces on the television was
:04:15. > :04:17.heartbreaking. I just feel for the families. And the Independent
:04:17. > :04:22.Police Complaints Commission has been talking about its involvement
:04:22. > :04:27.today as well. This issue has been very big over
:04:27. > :04:31.the last couple of days. They are saying they will review this whole
:04:31. > :04:36.issue of firearms licensing. There is a question of whether Mr
:04:36. > :04:40.Atherton should have had a firearms licence. We know that his licence
:04:40. > :04:45.was taken away in 2008. My colleague was told that it was
:04:45. > :04:49.confiscated for more than two months. Clearly it was then given
:04:49. > :04:54.back to him. That had all been triggered after he had threatened
:04:54. > :04:59.to harm himself. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is
:04:59. > :05:05.looking into this. Tomorrow the inquest will be held into the four
:05:05. > :05:10.people who have died. Behind me you can see that there is a tribute
:05:10. > :05:16.there, including one were to just says, to my two lovely sisters, you
:05:16. > :05:20.will never be forgotten. While we do not know what brought
:05:20. > :05:23.about the events at Horden on New Year's Day, there's been a call
:05:23. > :05:26.today for more help for men facing desperation in their lives. A young
:05:26. > :05:29.widow from York has been speaking after her husband took his own life
:05:29. > :05:31.leaving her to raise their three sons alone. 28-year-old Jo Mcdonagh
:05:31. > :05:34.believes husband Chris had been suffering from depression for
:05:34. > :05:44.several years before he hanged himself in 2009. We went to meet
:05:44. > :05:52.
:05:52. > :05:59.her. It just did not seem real. I did
:05:59. > :06:07.not know what to do. I knew as soon as I saw him that he had died. I
:06:07. > :06:12.checked for a pulse and any signs of life but there was nothing.
:06:12. > :06:15.describes the moment she discovered her husband had hanged himself.
:06:15. > :06:21.Chris was just 30 years old and had everything to live for, a young
:06:21. > :06:25.family and a doting wife. But in November 2006, at their lives were
:06:25. > :06:30.turned upside down. Chris was forced to take eight months off
:06:30. > :06:35.work after being seriously assaulted in the pub that he owned.
:06:35. > :06:40.His wife says that was the start of his depression. He would not even
:06:40. > :06:45.bother to get dressed. He did not want to see anybody. He never went
:06:45. > :06:50.out. He was not himself and he was not the man that I fell in love
:06:50. > :06:55.with. He became a recluse. mother-of-three says that her
:06:55. > :07:00.husband refused to get help. After a turbulent couple of years, she
:07:00. > :07:04.thought he had turned a corner, but in 2009 she received a text message
:07:04. > :07:08.saying goodbye. I never thought he was going to do anything. I just
:07:08. > :07:14.thought he was leaving and wanted to get away and I obviously wanted
:07:14. > :07:21.to stop him so I came straight up to find that he had hung himself.
:07:21. > :07:29.Over a five-year period, in Yorkshire, 488 men kill themselves
:07:29. > :07:33.-- women killed themselves, compared to the 1674 men. I think
:07:33. > :07:40.men do not talk about their feelings as much because society
:07:40. > :07:45.does not expect us to. We are supposed to lock it up and keep it
:07:45. > :07:49.to ourselves. If I could tell one person that they could get some
:07:49. > :07:59.help them that is all I could wish for. Just to stop when family going
:07:59. > :08:00.
:08:00. > :08:02.through what we have gone through would mean everything to me. -- one
:08:02. > :08:05.family. A Carlisle man has appeared in
:08:06. > :08:08.court, accused of rape, after a 22 year-old woman was found with head
:08:08. > :08:10.injuries at Newcastle's Royal Station Hotel on New Year's Day.
:08:11. > :08:13.Police received a call from the woman's husband, concerned she
:08:13. > :08:16.hadn't returned home. Officers found her at the hotel. 34-year-old
:08:16. > :08:18.David Roderick, of Borland Avenue in Carlisle, has been charged with
:08:18. > :08:22.rape, assault and false imprisonment. He's been remanded in
:08:22. > :08:25.custody to appear at Newcastle Crown Court in two weeks.
:08:25. > :08:28.A canoeist from North Yorkshire has died after being rescued from a
:08:28. > :08:31.river in Cumbria on New Year's Day. 41-year-old Catherine Stainsby,
:08:31. > :08:34.from Swinton near Malton, had got into difficulties while on the
:08:34. > :08:44.River Rawthey near Sedbergh. She was taken to hospital in Preston
:08:44. > :08:49.
:08:49. > :08:53.but died yesterday. Disability groups say their fight
:08:53. > :08:55.for better access on local buses is growing despite the death of a
:08:55. > :08:58.leading campaigner. Last year Darlington woman Ann Dodsworth
:08:58. > :09:00.claimed she was not allowed on Arriva buses because she used a
:09:00. > :09:04.wheelchair. Arriva denied the claims but Anne planned to sue them.
:09:04. > :09:07.Sadly she has since died. But Look North has learned that up to 11
:09:07. > :09:10.other disabled people in Darlington are now taking legal action against
:09:10. > :09:12.Arriva They include one man who says drivers banned him from buses
:09:12. > :09:17.because they claimed his wheelchair would blow up. Here is our
:09:17. > :09:20.political correspondent. She was an ordinary woman who
:09:20. > :09:25.became a campaigner. Ann Dodsworth had MS but what really mattered to
:09:25. > :09:32.her was independence. She claimed Arriva was not allowing her on
:09:32. > :09:41.their buses. One driver was heard to say that
:09:41. > :09:48.people like that should walk home, referring to me. If I could walk I
:09:48. > :09:51.would. It really upsets me. I feel like a second-class citizen.
:09:51. > :09:54.Arriva say they are sad to hear of Ann's death but they reiterate that
:09:54. > :09:56.they comply with the Disability Discrimination Act. But 11 other
:09:57. > :09:59.disabled people in Darlington are now also suing Arriva. Anthony
:10:00. > :10:08.Wilson uses an electric wheelchair, something he says meant he too was
:10:08. > :10:12.off the bus. They refused me access because they
:10:12. > :10:16.claimed that my electric wheelchair would blow up and kill everybody if
:10:16. > :10:22.there was an accident on the bus. They said your wheelchair would
:10:22. > :10:28.blow up? Yes. They said if there was a crash than the batteries were
:10:28. > :10:33.blown up and kill everybody on the bus. I was quite angry, very angry.
:10:33. > :10:37.I tried to say that it would not because it was made up lead and the
:10:37. > :10:47.bus driver told me to wait for another bus. The is is a series of
:10:47. > :10:49.systemic issues. Poor treatment for a wheelchair users.
:10:49. > :10:52.Arriva say they are running a campaign of disability awareness
:10:52. > :10:58.refresher training for drivers this year as part of their annual driver
:10:58. > :11:00.training programme but insist they do comply with current guidelines.
:11:00. > :11:03.Still to come on Wednesday's Look North:
:11:03. > :11:06.They braved Arctic conditions to keep our allies supplied during the
:11:06. > :11:16.Second World War. But now a veteran of the campaign to get recognition
:11:16. > :11:19.
:11:19. > :11:26.from the British government says he has given up hope. And I will have
:11:26. > :11:28.all of the weather details shortly. He says he invested 37 million and
:11:28. > :11:31.built a new stadium. But today former Darlington chairman George
:11:31. > :11:34.Reynolds said 'he would not be bothered if the club folded. As
:11:34. > :11:44.Darlington entered administration for the third time, some fans claim
:11:44. > :11:47.
:11:47. > :11:50.it was his overly ambitious plans that prompted a decade of decline.
:11:50. > :11:52.He used to be one of football's most colourful characters. The
:11:52. > :11:55.former safe-cracker turned millionaire businessman famously
:11:55. > :12:00.promised to take Darlington into the Premier League and built a new
:12:00. > :12:09.20 million stadium. But some claim it became a burden as fans
:12:09. > :12:14.struggled to fill even one of the stands. They would not have even
:12:14. > :12:21.had a football club if it had not been for me but I get blamed for
:12:21. > :12:27.investing 37 million. How do you answer that? It is so ridiculous.
:12:27. > :12:30.They say, you invested 37 million, and we would give you a good
:12:30. > :12:32.slagging. His time in charge ended in 2003
:12:32. > :12:35.when the club first went into administration. He has always
:12:35. > :12:41.blamed the local council. The stadium he claims would have been a
:12:41. > :12:46.success if it had let him build shops and restaurants around it.
:12:46. > :12:51.I have a saying, and this is a good quote, a critic's life is a life
:12:51. > :12:55.without cost for risk. The minute you put a cost or risk in, they
:12:55. > :12:58.will run a mile from it. Reynolds claims he still has the
:12:58. > :13:06.support of 97 % of Darlington fans. So after investing 37 million,
:13:06. > :13:16.would he be sad to see the club go out of existence? It would not
:13:16. > :13:17.
:13:17. > :13:25.bother me. You know, my new year's resolution is to make people
:13:25. > :13:33.accountable. No one is ever made accountable. If it is open you get
:13:33. > :13:36.flak and if it is close you get flak. What is the difference!?
:13:36. > :13:38.The Sunderland carmaker Nissan has broken another production record in
:13:38. > :13:41.its 25th anniversary year. Manufacturing hit more than 480,000
:13:41. > :13:44.vehicles in 2011, compared to just over 420,000 the year before,
:13:44. > :13:54.itself the first time any UK plant made more than 400,000 cars. Our
:13:54. > :14:00.
:14:00. > :14:03.Business Correspondent reports. It may be, but in 2011 Nissan
:14:03. > :14:06.really did buck the manufacturing trend. It was unremitting good news
:14:06. > :14:08.that came out of the Sunderland plant, capped by a record year of
:14:09. > :14:11.production more than 480,000 cars. A favourable exchange rate for
:14:11. > :14:18.export and good management and workforce relationships have also
:14:18. > :14:25.helped. We have worked very hard as a plant to make new products. We
:14:25. > :14:35.have done very well in the markets, particularly in June. We also have
:14:35. > :14:37.
:14:37. > :14:41.a very diverse customer base. the beginning, there was the desire
:14:41. > :14:47.and the determination. The work they it -- workforce has changed so
:14:47. > :14:52.much. The importance of the Qashqai
:14:52. > :14:59.cannot be underestimated. It is amazingly popular. 1200 are made
:14:59. > :15:04.every day and 80 % of them exported to over 90 countries. So what next
:15:04. > :15:08.for this record-breaking planned? Given the philosophy of continual
:15:09. > :15:13.improvement that promotes this place, you can be sure the record
:15:13. > :15:18.will be brief -- beaten again. When you have done a good job you were
:15:18. > :15:25.told you have done a good job but you can always do better. The
:15:25. > :15:27.target is for 500,000 cars in 2012. You've probably taken your
:15:27. > :15:32.Christmas tree down by now unless you're a traditionalist waiting for
:15:32. > :15:34.12th night. In Cumbria the Environment Agency has found a good
:15:34. > :15:44.use for unwanted trees, which it says helps prevent flooding. Alison
:15:44. > :15:46.
:15:46. > :15:49.Freeman put the wellies on and went to find out more.
:15:49. > :15:52.Not a bauble or piece of tinsel in sight. These Christmas trees from
:15:52. > :15:54.Whinlatter Forest never made it into family homes but they've been
:15:54. > :15:57.found another purpose. The Environment agency's been laying
:15:57. > :16:04.them on river banks to protect the land and the creatures who live in
:16:04. > :16:09.the water. The Christmas trees prevent erosion in the future. As
:16:09. > :16:15.the river level rises, it takes the energy out of the water and stops
:16:15. > :16:19.it eroding. This is about keeping the soil on the land. The silt is
:16:19. > :16:23.also taken out of the river and this stops fish eggs being
:16:23. > :16:26.smothered by it further down the river. The trees are held in place
:16:26. > :16:28.on top of locally sourced spruce logs. A far more environmentally-
:16:28. > :16:31.friendly alternative to other solutions which use metal cages.
:16:31. > :16:41.This scheme at Chapel Bec near Bassenthwaite village is one of
:16:41. > :16:42.
:16:42. > :16:47.around ten in the county. This is an example of where the
:16:47. > :16:51.Christmas trees have done their job. They were used on the banks here in
:16:51. > :17:00.2009. They have done their job. They have caught the silt and
:17:00. > :17:03.helped to repair the river bank. is really good that a lot of
:17:03. > :17:06.communities and some of the farmers are taking this on board and are
:17:06. > :17:09.doing their own Engineering on the river banks.
:17:09. > :17:13.The trees were donated by the Forestry Commission. But the rest
:17:13. > :17:23.of us need to contact our local councils to find out how best to
:17:23. > :17:25.
:17:25. > :17:27.get rid of our trees when we've finished with them.
:17:27. > :17:30.They braved Arctic conditions to keep our allies supplied during the
:17:30. > :17:33.Second World War. Many British merchant seamen and ships were lost

:17:36. > :17:39.our allies who were stopping Hitler from unleashing his full military
:17:39. > :17:41.might on us. Those who survived have never been rewarded by our
:17:41. > :17:44.government, even though the Russians have decorated them. Now,

:18:07. > :18:11.were preventing the full might of the Third Reich being unleashed on
:18:11. > :18:21.the UK. Tens of thousands of planes, tanks and guns were transported by
:18:21. > :18:25.the brave men of the Russian convoys. A lot of people were
:18:25. > :18:28.frightened. I was frightened, there is no doubt about it.
:18:28. > :18:31.Bob Robertson from South Shields was below decks as an engineer. He
:18:31. > :18:36.sailed in three convoys and saw ships and men lost. And that's into
:18:36. > :18:39.freezing seas where survival time was just a few minutes. In the
:18:40. > :18:45.engine room on the ship it was like being in a dustbin and someone
:18:45. > :18:53.hitting it with a hammer. The whole thing shock. That would frighten
:18:53. > :19:00.you because you knew that if anyone was going to be lost it would be
:19:00. > :19:08.the ones down below. It would be the engineer who was on watch at
:19:08. > :19:11.the time. Those on deck had a chance of a jumping overboard.
:19:11. > :19:17.has various medals including the Atlantic Star for his time on the
:19:17. > :19:21.convoys to and from America. But, like his fellow merchant seamen
:19:21. > :19:29.he's never been recognised for his efforts in the Arctic seas. Now 90,
:19:29. > :19:35.he's given up all hope that they'll ever be rewarded. For the sake of
:19:35. > :19:40.those few who are now pushing it, I would like to see them associated,
:19:40. > :19:44.but as far as I am concerned, I really believe it is a lost cause
:19:44. > :19:54.at the moment. Meanwhile, Bob holds the medals the Russians have given
:19:54. > :20:01.
:20:01. > :20:03.him in thanks for his bravery. Time for sport now, and Jeff has
:20:03. > :20:06.already in position for tonight's big game, Newcastle United against
:20:06. > :20:08.Manchester United. A game both sides need to win, which even I
:20:08. > :20:11.know can't happen! Newcastle's superb start to the
:20:11. > :20:14.season is becoming a bit of a distant memory. It wasn't a
:20:14. > :20:17.terribly happy Christmas and New Year for them. And they're looking
:20:17. > :20:27.for their first home win since Bonfire Night, against a Manchester
:20:27. > :20:29.
:20:29. > :20:31.United side who lost to the bottom club, Blackburn, at the weekend.
:20:31. > :20:34.Newcastle's loss to Liverpool was less surprising than Sir Alex's
:20:34. > :20:37.birthday mishap against struggling Blackburn at Old Trafford. But
:20:37. > :20:45.there could be fireworks tonight as both United's try to bounce back
:20:45. > :20:48.from wounding results. I fancy they might be fired up for it, as we are
